Thoughts on a Monday 8-4

This is my new haircut. It feels good and is super easy to care for, with my just having to blow it dry when I shower each morning.

I’m having a quiet day today. I walked a little over a mile on the treadmill using my new ‘slow-then-fast-for-me’ walking method. (Japanese Walking). I’ve been doing this for a couple of weeks now. The video says that this method is much more effective for health than the ‘set-the-speed-and-walk-for-30-minutes’ method I was using before. It sure keeps me more ‘engaged’. I’m walking for a slow speed for 2 minutes, then fast-for-me for 3 minutes in 5 minute increments over and over for the 30 minutes, so I have a slow speed to warm up and one to cool down at the end.

Today is a quiet day for us, with nothing we HAVE to do, so Brian and I ate breakfast and talked a bit, and will meet again for dinner this evening. Otherwise, we are free to do what we want. Brian will work and I will play. I feel a bit guilty about that – but, having worked all my life starting with summer jobs at 14, I feel I that embracing my fun and sloth is a wonderful thing.

I’m working on painting some sketches I started recently. I’m also making progress (in fits and starts) on my owls puzzle. Sometimes I think I won’t live long enough to finish this one, which is truly challenging. You can’t tell what part you’re working on, even after studying the picture. I’m looking forward to the day when I can display the finished puzzle for you!😋

I’m exercising with Mike, from More Life Health on my computer. He gears his workouts on various parts of the body so that you can choose what you feel you’re missing from your other exercising, geared to seniors. I do one of his workouts several times each week. No special equipment needed and the site is free.

I’m reading a good book on my Kindle; enjoying finding things I think are great on the computer; writing blog posts I hope you’ll enjoy; doing my yoga stretches and other new exercises; and more. The biggest problem is deciding what I want to do when!

I hope you are finding things that give you joy in your day.

This is a gazing ball that I covered in mosaic style to sit on in the middle of our birdbath in our yard in Arkansas. I loved the process, and it gave us joy for many years.

_____________

I spent an hour on the phone with our insurance company last night. We hope that we are sending what they want today and that things will be approved soon.

_____________

At dinner last night, Brian and I were discussing exercising – what we wanted to get from it. A few years ago, Brian did a bunch of weight lifting and exercising with a trainer and beefed up his muscles significantly. He gradually decided that he wanted to emphasize being healthy rather than concentrating on the muscles. When I told him I wanted to improve my stamina, particularly for walking here in Thailand; improve my flexibility, balance, etc., he showed me a couple of things he does every morning –

  1. He just stands in the middle of the room and moves his head back as far as he can, looking at the ceiling. (I will try this, but will be standing next to something for balance, as that will make me dizzy.)
  2. Another move is to reach up over his head with both arms, pointing them to the ceiling. He stretches up, up, and up again, breathing into it, then stands up on his toes, stretching even farther. He hears a pop or two. (I’m not sure what I’LL hear, but, again, I’ll probably stand beside a wall or my couch.)
  3. A third move is to stand with legs spread, balanced. Put arms over head, then bend to the left as far as you can. Straighten, then bend to the right. Repeat several times, breathing into it.
  4. Finally, stand with plenty of room around you. Straighten your arms out to the sides. Then turn one direction as far as you can, wrapping your arms around your body to increase the stretch as much as you can. Repeat on the other side.

I’m going to add these to my yoga practice each day, where I’ve already added the strengthening-my-back exercises my doctor showed me. Hopefully, these – along with my walking a mile on the treadmill at the gym each morning – will work together to help me meet my goals.

Evolving Exercise?

Freepik

Since I’m not EVER going to be an ‘exercise afficionado,’ – particularly since it’s a bit late to start at 78 – I’m trying to make the exercise I AM doing do the most for me.

I read an article recently (actually, my friend Marsha pointed it out to me) that the Japanese had done a study that showed that, instead of just getting on the treadmill, setting the speed, and walking for 30 minutes (1 mile) as I have been doing for about a month and a half now, it’s more effective if you start with a warm-up of a couple of minutes, then increase your speed as if you were going to miss a bus, be late for work, etc. for a few minutes, and then go back to slow, repeating over and over for the same 30 minute session.

I don’t really know if it’s really doing me much more good than what I was mindlessly slogging through before, but it keeps my interest and makes me FEEL like I’m doing myself more good.

I’ve been doing what I call, “Old lady yoga stretches” for quite a while now, hoping to keep myself as flexible as possible, improve my balance, loosen stiff muscles, etc. The problem is that I’ve been planning to do my session in the evening after dinner.

I’ve finally recognized a tendency to either shorten my session or just put it off altogether due to my innate laziness. SO – now I’ve changed to doing my session in the afternoon, when I’m still relatively fresh, not sleepy, and more likely to do a full length session, slowly, with intention. (Like as soon as I finish writing this post!)

Last, my doctor here in Thailand recommended three exercises for me to do to strengthen my back when I told her about my ‘mystery debilitating back spasms’ from which I suffered for about a week.

I don’t have weights, but I DO have 1 liter bottles of water. I’m doing two of the exercises using one of the bottles. I’ll increase that to two when this gets easier.

The first exercise is to stand holding the bottle close to your body with both hands in front of you. You twist as far as you can to the left, then back to the front, then twist as far as you can to the right and back again. I’m doing 20 reps.

The second exercise starts with you standing holding the bottle in front of you legs spread for balance. You reach as far as you can up and to the left, hold, then bring it back. Then reach as far as you can up and to the right, hold, then bring it back. I’m doing 20 reps of this one, too.

The third exercise is really a challenge for me. I’m combining it with my yoga stretches. I’m flat on my stomach on my mat, arms in front of me on the floor in a ‘V’ shape. Then I’m supposed to lift up my arms and my head and as much of me as possible from the waist up off the floor and hold.

Yeah, right.

I’m doing the best I can, but I’m barely able to lift anything from my waist up off the floor now. I’m looking at this as the same theory as the lady who created the yoga video for seniors. She said that it doesn’t matter if you can’t touch your toes. If you are TRYING to touch your toes, bend over as far as you can and breathe into it, you are doing the same good for your body as if you DID touch your toes. Your body is stretching toward your goal and will give a bit more each day. I’m HOPING that – if I keep lifting up as much as I can each day – gradually I’ll do better and better. The lifting and stretching will hopefully strengthen my back a bit at a time.

Really Nice Saturday

Credit: Warren Goldswain – 123RF

I walked my mile on the treadmill at the gym this morning, increasing my speed a bit, so that feels good. I also decided to switch my yoga stretching and back exercises to this morning, instead of waiting until the evening, because too often I find ‘other things to do’ (translation: laziness) and then it’s time to go to bed.

I washed out my exercise clothes and some other stuff and put everything on the drying rack out on my balcony. The weather app said thunderstorms would come around 3pm, so I figured I would have time to get things dry and inside before then.

Well the clouds and the weather app weren’t in perfect harmony because the rains came early. I was playing in my art alcove and leaped up when I heard the rain starting. I brought everything inside. Part of the things were dry, but my jeans shorts still need some time. I have them hanging at half mast from a hanger balanced on a shelf right now. The rain seems to be stopping. I may put them back out, or just wait and see if they need more tomorrow.

I’ve been having fun in my art alcove, choosing drawings from YouTube and Pinterest, Etsy, and things I find other places. I’m trying to improve my sad ability to reproduce what I see. I have a big fat sketchbook with lots and lots of pages. I can fill it up, throw it out and start another one, or whatever. I’m not going to ‘do’ anything with these, because the ideas are not mine. I’m not under any pressure doing this, so it has become just a fun activity that might result in improvement.

I started these at the cafe yesterday when we were being scarce so my wonderful housekeeper could work in peace. (I asked Brian to write Khun Nong to tell her how pleased I am with the work she is doing for me, and, of course, the flowers! )

I finished the sketches today. They are good therapy in that trying to reproduce the work of others drives other concerns from my mind for a time, bringing calmness.

I’ve actually made a bit of progress with my owls picture jigsaw puzzle. Nothing to write home about, but I’m not completely at a standstill anymore. Maybe it will come together eventually! 😀

Brian had a cold mocha delivered to the building this afternoon. He’s working, but texted me to let me know it had been delivered, so I could go downstairs and get it. He seems to always be thinking of me. I am such a lucky woman.

Sound Designer?

“Don’t let aging get you down. It’s too hard to get back up.” – John Wagner

My husband actually laughs when he is sitting in his recliner watching me do my old lady yoga stretches. I DO sound like Rice Krispies – ‘Snap, crackle, and pop!” as I move. I feel better afterward, though – looser and more flexible.

“You know you’re getting old when everything hurts, and what doesn’t hurt doesn’t work.

I have a DVD by Cat Kabira, who designed some stretches especially for seniors (how I HATE that term!). She emphasizes that if you stretch as much as you are able in whatever pose, and then breathe into it, you’re doing as much good for your body as if you had actually touched the floor, or folded yourself into the paper airplane. I’m taking her at her word, moving slowly (except when my cat bites my foot), b-r-e-a-t-h-i-n-g into the position…

“I’m at that age where my mind still thinks I’m 29; my humor suggests I’m 12 while my body mostly keeps asking if I’m sure I’m not dead yet.”

I hope that this is a really nice month for you.

Yesterday my wonderful hair stylist, Michael Remillard from Tangles in Greenwood, performed a miracle and I now look more like someone had a plan. My hair is thin and fine. Michael cuts it so that I can wash it and blow it dry in the mornings, just perfect for our lifestyle.

BoredPanda.com

That took up most of the morning, though, so I missed the time I normally do sessions with weights between blog posts. (I didn’t finish my posts for the day until around 3pm.) I did, however, do 45 minutes of yoga stretches in the afternoon and felt good afterwards. An added bonus was that Monster Cat didn’t attack my feet with teeth and claws as I relaxed and stretched. :0)

Keto Chili – Suzanne Ryan – Simply Keto

Today I’m hoping is a more regular day, with no drama, so I can indulge myself in my routine of blog posts and exercises with weights in the morning, get the makings of keto chili in the crock pot after lunch, spend some good time up in my art room (trying to make Christmas presents for friends) and do a good session of yoga before dinner.

I hope that you have a super nice day today and that it’s only the beginning of a stellar month for you.

SPECIAL DAY –

My husband is having a birthday tomorrow. He doesn’t want to TALK about it, DO anything about it, or even THINK about it. Last year he was hyped because turning “80” had panache. 81 is simply old. I think you can FEEL him frowning. I’ll just try to make his day as pleasant as possible and let it go at that.

BUILDING HABITS WITH INTENTION – My idea of exercising with my 3-pound weights in-between blog posts, or other activities on the computer is working well. I stop often, doing a good set of exercises right beside my computer with the weights, then put them down on the counter and get back to my computer. I did this 5 times yesterday, getting in a good amount of exercise during the day.

I’m rounding this out with my yoga stretches, even though Monster Cat has decided that I’m teasing her by getting down on the floor on the mat. She crawls under the end of the mat, then leaps out and attacks my foot, then dashes under the mat again. Yesterday I brought my foot down on top of her, letting her know that I didn’t appreciate her efforts while I was trying to relax.

She retaliated later by jumping into the empty cardboard box we usually keep for her in the middle of the floor. (I put it up on the sofa when I’m doing my yoga.) She played around in it and then attempted to jump out of it and pulled the whole box down with her to the floor – on top of my head and outstretched arms. My husband died laughing, but did retrieve the box and move it to the foyer, enticing her to follow him so I could finish my stretching.

When the weather is cooperative, I take at least a couple of walks during the day, out to the shop and around the yard, sometimes with pruning shears in my hand. This combination of weights, yoga, and walking is making me feel as if I’m doing a good thing for this old body.

Yesterday I was deep-cleaning the center section of our Entertainment center where hopefully our new DirecTV system will be installed today. Saying I was appalled at what was behind the TV and all the books, electronics, ETC. that I have ignored, due to 1) being unable to access the shelves behind all this stuff and complex wiring going from one of the shelves to another, and 2) the ‘out-of-sight-out-of-mind’ syndrome that aids a slob like me, is a vast understatement. We actually have our TV tied with rope to anchors in the back of the center-most shelf to keep it from being bumped enough to make it topple.

Since the wiring will change, we untied the TV and put it down on the floor beside the fireplace, putting a sling chair in front of it, almost touching, to keep the cat and dog from making it fall over. It will stay there until the installer is ready for us to put it back, rewire, and tie it up.

Meanwhile, all the dog hair and dust was there for all to see. It was embarrassing, like when you change appliances and want to rush to clean the area before the new one goes in. (If you’re like me.)

I started at 10:00 and finally finished at about 4:30. I took some Tylenol last night before bed, but I was still hurting and didn’t sleep well. First thing this morning I took some Ibuprofin. I still hurt when I get up, but things are easing. I plan to do several walks today and follow that up with a nice session of yoga stretches.

We have no clue when the installer is supposed to come, so we’ll have to postpone errands until tomorrow. We’ll gather the trash and take it down, but that’s it.

I’m running a 25% off sale on all of my hand-painted, one-of-a-kind tote bags on my Etsy site right now. (The link takes you directly to my totes page.) I hope you find something you like – for yourself or for gifts. :0)

Our weather is so glorious these days it’s hard to stay inside. I hope your weather is beautiful, too, and that you have a fun day today.

I really love the creativity shown here, plus the expertise putting it together. I think it’s wonderful.

Our ‘excitement’ for the day is a trip to get our mail and my husband’s haircut appointment. Be still, my beating heart. :0)

On the to-do list today is monitoring our irrigation system. I had my alarm set yesterday, but then went up to my art room. I didn’t think about it until yesterday evening, right before dark. SO – I have the alarm set NOW for the hair appointment, and when we get back I’ll set it AGAIN to go out and see what’s going on with the watering at 3pm.

The reason I messed up on monitoring the watering system was I was upstairs in my art room making this wood-burned piece that I listed on my Etsy site, HandmadeHavenByLinda yesterday afternoon.

I’ve gotten lax on doing my yoga stretches lately, too, so that’s on the list today as a priority, too.

I hope that your day is a good one.

My massage therapist texted me that she needed to change my massage day and time, so – happily – I’m going this morning! Between my massage this morning and my yoga stretches this afternoon, I should be a happy camper!

Yesterday I finished two wood-burned pieces. One is a gift for our hair dresser and the other a sign I listed on Etsy

I’m having a great time in my art room. I learn more each time I work on another piece, and I’m enjoying the challenge. I’m brimming with ideas, so that makes me greet each day with anticipation. Hopefully, I’ll get another piece started today.

I hope you find something fun or satisfying to do today.

It’s quite dark outside right now, looking as if the skies will open up any time. Amazingly, I’ll need to get out and water if this bypasses us to make sure my tomatoes are getting enough water. My husband is making some repairs to our irrigation system, so we’re dependent on the rain right now. I’ve encouraged him to take his time, not working himself into a frazzle over it.

Our driveway people called yesterday, saying they are AIMING to do our driveway repair Thursday! Fingers crossed that Mother Nature cooperates at least a little bit, allowing them to do the 2 jobs they have ahead of ours.

Our trash people took a much-deserved day off yesterday, delaying regular trash pick up by one day. My husband got antsy about it. He decided that my information was wrong, even though the paperwork I have SHOWS they were off yesterday and that our pick up day this week would be Wednesday (rather than the usual Tuesday). So we gathered it up and drove it down. I dragged the can down, so now it’s waiting for them whenever they come.

Amber and Jet seem to have finally reached a point where they can walk carefully around each other – a HUGE improvement from the initial big hostility both displayed when first introduced. NOW the big push is to make sure they are NOT together when ANYONE is eating. Amber, our 95 pound yellow lab, has NO sense of humor or grace when the subject of food is raised.

We will also need to be very careful not to let Jet outside yet until we’re sure she knows where ‘home’ is. I told my husband I wanted to make that decision. So far, he will cooperate, though he is bad about paying attention to details, like where the cat is, or whether she is right under his feet, trying to trip him, when he goes out into the garage to replenish his drink supply, for example.

I’m S-L-O-W-L-Y, gradually, making a bit of progress on losing the lard. I’m now down 27.8 pounds from my heaviest. I’m getting used to reading labels on things and trying to make substitutes so I can watch carbs and sodium, primarily.

shesaidbeauty.com-boredpanda.com

I’m routinely doing a 40-minute old lady stretching yoga session daily now. I’m adding another stretch every once in a while. If I can make myself, I’m trying to do some online 10-minute videos, such a exercises with weights for seniors. This varies all over the place, but it’s my INTENTION to do one each day…

I wish you a happy, safe day.

Moving the Lard

I am currently doing three things to move the lard in an effort to keep all my parts moving in as pain-free a manner as possible for as long as possible.

THING ONE– Senior Online Exercise Videos by Mike from More Life Health Seniors – There are a whole series of these. If you’re interested, click on the link above to scroll through the offerings. I’m trying to do at least two different ones daily.

THING TWO – a 30 – 40 minute session of old lady stretching yoga daily. I have made my own series of stretches and positions now, but I started with a “Gentle Yoga ” DVD I purchased through Sixty and Me by Kat Kabira. She got me over my intimidation of the whole yoga idea, stressing that stretching toward, and breathing into, stretches and poses was as good for beginners as ACTUALLY being able to bend over and touch your toes, for example. I do a lot of “stretching toward” and “breathing into”, and I can tell you that I really feel the difference if I don’t take the time to do my practice.

thumbpress.com-boredpanda.com

THING THREE – And finally, I try to get outside daily (if Mother Nature is feeling cooperative) to get some fresh air, walk around, and do something good in the yard. It may be half an hour harvesting veggies, weeding flower beds, weed whacking, spraying bug spray or weed control spray, etc.

The combination of these three things plus watching my carbs and sodium is all working together in my efforts to lose the lard. MyFitnessPal.com is a free website where I can list my exercise, my weight and measurements, and the foods I eat daily to make sure I’m staying on track. I believe I have finally found a good, healthy combination to accomplish my goal of staying as healthy as possible as the years pile on. :0)

I’m having to shift my exercises once again. My elliptical trainer is flashing a ‘motor error’ message and won’t run, so it’ll have to wait until further notice for me to mention it to my husband. I don’t want him anywhere near heavy, complicated stuff until he’s fully healed. Meanwhile I’m finding some information online that may help when that time comes.

I decided that I would benefit from some guided, timed practice with the weights, so I went back to Mike, a ‘seniors’ exercise specialist online (https://morelifehealth.com/) and found a 10-minute video he leads with exercises with weights and just finished that. I changed from the 5-lb weights I was using to 3-lb for this, since it looked like that was what he was using and I didn’t want to not be able to do it next time due to my arms being too sore. :0)

With that, my 30-minute yoga practice, and either working in the yard or simply walking out to the shop, then back and around the house several times, that will be my exercise for the day.

I’m re-reading Suzanne Ryan’s Simply Keto Recipe Book. I find new information each time I read it, plus renewed motivation to lose the lard. I’m going to fix a chef salad for our dinner tonight with leftover roast beef.

I have also decided that Mission Zero Tortillas may save my life. (Each has 7 carbs. Each also has 7 grams fiber. You start with listed carbs and subtract the fiber count plus alcohol sugars to determine the net carbs. In this case, it’s zero, and there are only 25 calories in each tortilla. I’m using one in place of the dinner roll I used to have with dinner. I use one rolled up to eat a hot dog. I use two for a ‘sandwich.’ Since bread has always been one of my favorite things, I really missed it – so these are a miracle for me.

Moving the Bulk

Melsanie.tumblr.com – boredpanda.com

I won’t say I have built a ‘habit’ of doing my approximately half-hour of old lady yoga stretching daily, but it HAS become a grudging ‘responsibility to myself.’ I highly resent that I don’t get a flood of endorphins, or whatever you’re supposed to get that makes you happy to be alive, raring to go, climbing Mt. Everest in the morning, and what not. I just do my stretches the best way I can, usually feeling a bit ‘looser’ than I did when I first got down on my mat, and put my sparkly star on my calendar.

Women’s Health

Yesterday I started a new thing – a few exercises to strengthen my arms with 5-pound weights. I only did 5 reps of each movement, but it’s a start and I’ll build up from here. I’ll do this M-W-F. (I put TWO stars on my calendar yesterday.)

vgajic – Getty Images – Fit and Well

Today I’ll do 10 minutes or so on my Elliptical Trainer in the garage – after cleaning off quite-a while’s-worth of dust off and finding my MP3 player. (I just FOUND it – plugged into its charger behind my computer screen, along with the earplugs that go with it. :0) ) I’ll plan to do this right after lunch, and the plan is to do this T-TH-S and increase the time as I can.

Since I’ve already been out weeding and harvesting my veggie planters this morning, the yoga and the elliptical will round out my day nicely on moving the bulk.

I received a text last night from Patty, Linda’s daughter, saying that Linda’s other daughter, Kelly, was in town from Nashville. She wanted to know if we wanted to meet them, and Linda, for Lunch Bunch today! I’m really looking forward to seeing all of them, catching up, and giving/getting wonderful hugs. I don’t know if Kay and her husband, Bud, will be there or not. That would be truly wonderful.

After we go to lunch, we’ll stop at the local grocery to get more canned dog food for Amber. She seems to be doing well on the food made for dogs with sensitive stomachs, with more wet than dry food in each feeding, so we’re sticking with that for now.

I’m making it a point to bring Abby in every afternoon for a love-the-cat fest. We are both enjoying it. She is showing no signs that she is in pain. I can’t keep the diapers on her, so I can only let her in when I can make the time to sit and love her, then put her outside again. Since she has always been an inside/outside cat, this is working for us.

It’s grim, gray, 54 degrees and rainy-looking today, so unless it clears up, it looks like I’ll have to wait on weed-whacking around my veggie planters today. I’m hoping we’ll get some good, soaky rains, helping our veggies get a good start.

James Marvin Phelps – boredpanda.com

Today is DAY 34 on my practicing my yoga stretches every day. Yesterday I was feeling cranky/out-of-sorts/hostile/sore/tired and I have to admit I went ahead and put a star on my desk calendar because I tried really hard to work out in the yard and failed to make any progress. I talked myself into counting THAT as my exercise for the day. I sat in my recliner trying to relax and felt guiltier and guiltier. Finally, I got up, got my mat, and did my practice as I should have, feeling better physically and guilt-free. Does anyone else have to fight with themselves to do what’s right?

Since it looks like my weed whacking will need to be postponed for better weather, I may actually get up to my art room this afternoon.

Make this a good day.

Welcoming Spring 2024

leahbelle-thePixMix

Somehow I forgot to send Happy Spring Wishes yesterday. My apologies. I DO send them to you. :0)

I finished planting my spring garden yesterday afternoon. We got the rest of the plants yesterday morning and I waited until it warmed up to actually plant. Yesterday I planted 6 more spinach plants and 8 tomato plants.

This is the 8-foot planter. I planted Butter Crunch leaf lettuce, iceberg head lettuce, and spinach. Due to space, I just spread the plants out as best I could, changing from one type of plant to the other, rather than planting the spinach 4-to-a-square, and the leaf lettuce the same way. I’m hoping the plants will do okay like this.

This is a closer view. The plants have a bit more room to spread out than in traditional square foot planting.

This square planter has 4 tomato plants around the center pole with supports tied to the pole for sturdiness. Then I planted some of the lettuces and the spinach around the perimeter.

The ‘niche’ planter (because it is sheltered by the back of the house and our screened porch) has the other 4 tomato plants. I’m going to TRY not to allow the plants to spill over the side onto the ground this time. I really hate cutting healthy vines, but I’m telling myself that all the energy goes to the vines, rather than producing tomatoes…

Today I’m planning to get there this afternoon when it’s warmer (it’s 47 now) do some weed whacking, fertilizing, and soil-enhancing.

This yard work PLUS my yoga practice PLUS my normal other activities is really making me welcome the bed at night. Probably good for building my character, as well. :0)

Are you growing a garden this year?

Yesterday I did a bunch (for me). I –

  • gathered trash and drove it down when we left for errands. I dragged the can down to the bottom of the driveway and put the trash IN it.
  • We got our mail
  • We drove to Ft. Smith to sign our tax returns and get our copies of everything
  • We stopped at the Co-op on the way home and I bought leaf lettuce, head lettuce, and spinach plants

Best of all, we went in the TRUCK instead of the Vette. I don’t enjoy riding in the Vette anymore. My husband drives like he is 20, zipping in and around everyone on the road, stepping on the gas when I would step on the brakes. The fact that he is 80 and is still recovering from a broken collarbone from falling on the ice just wouldn’t make a difference. SO – I was very grateful that we took the truck. :0)

When we got home I gathered the planting stuff and took it out to the east end of the house where we have the three brick planters we converted to square foot planters a year or so ago. I got all the plants in (16 of each), fertilized and watered them. I rested a bit, then, since I would be fixing dinner soon, I took king-sized sheets and clothespins out and covered the plants. It was due to – and DID – freeze last night. (I have an alarm set now for an hour to go out and UNcover the plants before we need to leave for some errands this morning.) I think I’ll give the garden a day to see if these plants look like they’re going to make it before buying more.

I did my yoga like a good girl, although I had quite a talk with myself. At first I thought, okay – I spent about 45 minutes out in the yard, bending, digging, planting, watering, then covering things with sheets. I have had my exercise for the day and don’t need to do my yoga today. On the other hand, I have committed to trying to do it EVERY day, building a habit, hopefully giving my body the gift of better balance, more strength and flexibility. My responsible side won.

The end result was that I was pooped. I made our dinner, then cleaned up the kitchen. I took my shower early and went to bed early. My husband woke me up this morning or I would have overslept!

So, I hope the plants are looking happy later today and tomorrow. If they are, I’ll get the second load of plants and see if I can finish. I want to plant tomatoes, and I’m not sure what other veggies I’ll get. :0)

Well, Shut My Mouth!

Asier_Relampago – Freepik.com

I’m down 21.6 pounds since my heaviest. One day at a time.

I’m going to get a spaghetti squash today to bake so that I can make the third in my trifecta of substitutes for the ‘white stuff’ I love to serve under sauces – “cauli-rice,” “zoodles,” and “spaghetti squash.” When I finish the prep today, I’ll have a supply of each frozen in individual portions so that I can follow my low carb eating plan while my husband eats whatever pasta and white rice. He has looked quite appalled at my idea that he join me in the change, so this way we can both eat “spaghetti,” for example, with smiles on our faces.

I’ve also discovered Mission Zero Carb Tortillas. They actually have 7 carbs per tortilla, but 7 grams of fiber, so “0” net carbs. I can enjoy one each evening in place of the dinner roll I’ve been eating. Tonight I’m making a large tuna fish salad for our dinner.

I’m happy with progress with my yoga practice. Today is Day 21 of every-afternoon practice. I’m up to 20 reps on my abdominal exercise (started at 5), and 7 reps on each side of my leg lifts (bird dog pose) (started with 3). I’m feeling looser. I won’t say I look forward to my exercise session, but I’m getting ‘used-to-it.’ :0)

I’m hoping I can keep my head on straight with my mouth shut regarding eating or drinking what I shouldn’t so I can continue losing the lard and getting stronger, more flexible, with better balance.

sam – @Briton65Sam on X

I’m on a definite roller coaster with my weight this past week. I’m still weighing daily as my accountability to myself, but I’m trying to think of it only as a ‘monitor’ – a starting point for the day. It would just be nice if the scales lost their smirk a bit. Yesterday I made keto chili. Suzanne Ryan’s recipes in Simply Keto are really good. I also had a Mission Zero little bitty tortilla, (zero NET carbs due to 7 grams of fiber) and that was good, taking the place of the dinner roll I had been eating before I started watching my carbs again.

Pinterest

I’m earning a sparkly star for my desk calendar daily, continuing since Feb. 18th. Not a ‘habit’ yet, but I’m a tough nut on building those, and will continue my efforts.

I’m doing laundry and we’ll go shopping for groceries later, and that’s the ‘excitement’ for our day, other than the “Sausage, Egg & Cheese Bake” from Simply Keto for our dinner tonight.

I hope your Sunday is fabulous.

Happy March 3-1-2024

Since not many folks feel as I do about February and I did NOT receive a gazallion signatures on my petition to do away with the month, I’ve decided to quit whining about it. You’re welcome. :0)

I’m seeing signs of spring in our yard and it makes me smile to go outside, though it’s still a bit too brisk to stay out there long. My daffodils are nodding happily, forsythia is starting to shoot forth yellow blooms, my iris are shooting their spears up, and our tulip tree is starting to bloom. NICE!

This is my desk calendar for February. As you can see, I got serious about my yoga practice on the 18th. I finished the month in fine style, earning 12 stars for the month. Hopefully I can earn 31 stars for March, building to a habit of yoga each afternoon.

vladimircech-Freepik.com

On my efforts to lose the lard, I reached my 20 pounds off goal. I’m planning to set new goals in 5-pound-increments, since they seem more attainable than the entire amount of lard I would like to lose. I’m trying to eat low carb. I’m eating cauli-rice instead of rice, zoodles instead of spaghetti, no pasta, a low carb tortilla instead of bread (though I haven’t tried them yet), careful choices on very little fruit, as little sugar as possible, cutting down on salt, lots of low carb veggies.

Cooking for us is a bit of a challenge, but so far, it’s going well. My husband has no interest in low carb. He has no interest in low sugar, either, but I’m adamant about him watching that. I’m hoping that by the end of March, I’ll be making good progress in my diet and exercise, moving more, feeling pretty good for an old broad. :0)

My husband is having trouble with his computer. I’m typing for him as he chats with various Microsoft techs. It’s tedious, but doable. Once this is over, I hope to get up to my art room.

I hope that March brings you joy.

@Matt_Pinner On X

Good morning! It’s sunny outside and 34 degrees F. right now. It was 80 yesterday afternoon. This afternoon’s high is forecast to be 51. What a difference a night makes. We avoided the severe weather threat, and for that I’m very thankful. The wind blew and ‘gusted,’ but that was it. HOORAAAAAY!

Bill Oxford-Getty Images-istockphoto

Our bug spray guy came just as we were getting things together for lunch. He sprayed inside and out, for everything including elephants, so we should be in good shape now. I really don’t like to have scary things crawling around or flying around inside the house, if possible.

Fillistimlyanin-freepik.com

Even though MyFitnessPal said “You are not likely eating enough” and I was careful, apparently I also ate lead or something that made me retain water. I was up almost a pound this morning. I realize that weight can fluctuate for many reasons and that I shouldn’t be upset – and probably shouldn’t be weighing myself every day – but this is working for me and keeping me on track and motivated. I just gnashed my teeth, stuck my tongue out at the scales as it laughed at me, and will do my best to stay on track today.

freepik

I HAVE to train myself to read labels at the grocery store before buying anything. That will drive my husband nuts – but I’ll just tell him it’s necessary, and that he can stay home if he wants to. I pulled out a frozen dinner to eat this evening, since I’ve been cooking a lot lately. It’s ‘high protein’ and I assumed low carb since it’s Lean Cuisine. NOOOOOO! It’s 38 carbs! I’m trying to stick to around 20 carbs per day, so this one meal is almost two days’ worth! ARRRRRRGH! Needless to say, I won’t be eating that tonight.

I will drive down to the bottom of our driveway soon to get our mail and check to see if our trash can is empty. I checked it at 4pm yesterday and it was still full. I’ll call the company either way. When we started with them, the paperwork said they might have someone picking it up at 4am the pickup day, so to have the trash out there and ready. We started putting it out mid day Monday for Tuesday pickup. The last few weeks, we’ve tried to stop, either going or coming back from errands, to put the can away, but it’s still full. I’ll see if I can find out what’s going on, or maybe they just missed us this week. Such a TERRIBLE problem, right? :0)

ClipArtLibrary

I’ll be earning my third sparkly star for the week today for yoga practice. I’m TRYING to make this a habit, but learned last year that I defy the odds on making something become a habit. The sparkly star on the calendar right now is enough to keep me going. Maybe I’ll become more of an adult later…

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

It’s official. I FINALLY got to the 20 pounds down mark in my efforts to lose the lard. Apparently, my latest efforts – cutting the carbs WAAAAAY down – is getting my body’s attention. The MyFitnessPal website is really helpful in planning my eating for the day. I can list what I plan to eat and then see if I’m eating too many carbs and change out something until the numbers are better.

I will also earn my second sparkly star for my desk calendar today with my yoga practice. Yesterday I did 13 reps of the abdominal exercise, and 6 of the leg-out-behind-me exercise on each side. Improvement!

Our ‘excitement’ for the day is the bug spray guy is coming. I have no idea when. I’ve seen ladybugs and a spider lately, so I’m happy he’s coming. I have nothing in particular against ladybugs. I don’t like spiders much. The thing is, when you live in a rural area, scary bugs aren’t far behind when you begin to see other things, so LET THE SPRAYING BEGIN!

The forecast is for really gusty winds today (up to 45mph), super warm temperatures (82 degrees F. in February), followed by thunderstorms, a cold front, and possible severe weather this evening and overnight, followed by a 35 degree drop in temperatures for tomorrow. Think roller coaster! WHEEE!

My big chore is to hope the trash people empty the can at the bottom of the driveway so I can drag it back up where it ‘lives’ before the thunderstorms this evening. Fingers crossed.

We voted in the Arkansas primary yesterday. I LOVE early voting. We drove to town, thinking the voting would be at City Hall or the court house. Nope! We asked a policeman at the court house and he told us the voting was at the fairgrounds. We drove there and voted in about 5 minutes. I thanked the volunteers there profusely. I think early voting is so civilized. It really helps to be able to go when the weather is cooperative and at a good time for YOU.

Not sure yet what the plan is for today. Some of it will depend on when the bug spraying guy comes. I’ll just hang loose and see what happens.

I hope your day is a pleasant one.

“The Light of my Life”-Boo-@333too3 on X

It’s a pretty Monday here – quite spring-like, with a high of 83 forecast for this afternoon. We have a cold front coming through tomorrow night, reminding us that we have some winter left, but I think we’re through the worst of it now. Every morning when I open the front door, the sight of the daffodils blooming their heads off all around the well house makes me smile.

Our big things for today are 1) gathering the trash and putting it out at the bottom of our driveway, 2) getting our mail, and 3) voting in the Arkansas primary.

Yesterday I vacuumed a LOT, getting the first floor carpeted areas (our office, the foyer, and the living room) plus the tiled areas (the hallway, two half baths, the dining area, kitchen, pantry, and utility room.) The result was that when I emptied the jammed-full vacuum canister, I was throwing away more than a full dog’s worth of hair. UGH. You would think Amber would be completely bald now, but she has a full complement of hair ready to be shed…

lowbird.com-boredpanda.com

Yesterday afternoon I almost decided that all the vacuuming I did should count as my exercise for the day. Then I hauled my old, aching body out of the recliner and got down on the mat for my yoga practice. My husband happened to be reading in his recliner. I managed to do a good practice. I did 11 reps of my abdominal exercise and 5 reps on each side on my knee-to-nose-and-then-lifted-out-straight-to-the-back exercise, rather than 3. My husband nodded at me and said, “Good job.” I looked at him and said, “Tomorrow you’ll practice with me?” He looked at me, and then started reading again, not saying a word. :0)

Sent to me by Madeleine Jacobs

For some reason, one of our investment outfits decided to ‘recertify’ us or ‘update our records’, requiring that we send in everything including our first grade report cards to prove who we are. They closed down access to our account until we produce all this stuff. One of the requirements was proof of residence – with something listing both of our names. I don’t know if Arkansas is different than the rest of the states, but all the utility accounts are in the man’s name only. (I’m chattel, I guess.) We sent in our electricity bill, but they wouldn’t accept that. I finally thought of our reverse mortgage statement. It DID list both of us. We scanned that and sent it in today. Hopefully, that will satisfy them and we can have access to our account again… ARRRRRRRGH!

I hope that your week is a good one.

We’re lucky to be having a gorgeous Tuesday here. It’s sunny and is forecast get to the low 70s today! But it’s FEBRUARY! Shhhh!

We didn’t sleep well. Amber decided something was trying to encroach in the middle of the night and started barking. I tried to ignore it, then got up to go down and talk to Amber and she stopped.

We did this FOUR. SEPARATE. TIMES. I’m still fantasizing about tearing her tongue out so she can’t bark. It’s amazing that a dog who looks so pretty and SWEET can drive you nuts. Anyway, we are all up now and halfway functional.

I have to tell you it was a pleasure to be able to fully use our master bathroom last night and this morning. Our plumber’s helper, Josh, was here right at 8:30 and put the new parts in my basin and draining system, then pulled the toilet, resealed it, and replaced the parts in the tank. We’re fully functional again. I have to put everything back under the sink and in the toilet part of the bathroom, but I’ll do that slowly so my back doesn’t yell too loudly.

Pinterest

I did my yoga practice like a good girl. I did a new abdomen exercise Sunday which made my stomach muscles sore – a very good sign. I did it again yesterday and will keep doing it until my muscles aren’t sore, at which point I’ll increase the reps. Did I tell you I love seeing sparkly stars on my desk calendar for my exercise? I will never outgrow that…

We had quite a nature-filled evening. There were deer in the driveway, setting off the driveway detector. When I went out to check, there were also several white-tailed rabbits playing in the grass between our house and our shop and a roadrunner standing on one of the woodpiles. We also heard a group of coyotes singing for a minute or two. It’s really a distinctive sound. Kind of eerie. I have no clue why they do it.

I’m researching modifying the way I eat. I’m trying to cut my carbs way back, but I’m not really strictly following the keto eating plan. My lack of gallbladder makes handling all that fat difficult at best. My plan is to just do about 2/3 of the plan, eating the fat naturally included, but not trying to eat more than necessary.

I have Simply Keto – a wonderful book by Suzanne Ryan – that explains what to do and provides recipes that we already know we like, such as Keto Chili and a breakfast quiche type meal that we eat for dinner. We’ll see what happens. Fingers crossed.

Have a great day!

This painting lifts my spirits and makes me smile. I LOVE all the light, too.

I slept fine last night, but I keep finding myself staring into space instead of doing whatever it is I’m intending to do. Hopefully, my coffee will make me more alert.

We’re having a beautiful, cold morning here with lots of sunshine. The weekend brought us pretty cold mornings, but the weather forecasters are saying a nice warm-up for the next 10 days. YEA!!!

Today marks Week 4 since my husband’s fall. Last night reminded my husband that he has some healing left to do. He was in bed while I was finishing up. He said he would turn his bed light on, but couldn’t lift his arm to do it, having to roll over to reach the switch. We agreed that he’s healing well, but needs to be mindful that he’s not fully healed yet and needs to be careful.

I’m going to make spaghetti for dinner tonight, making enough for a couple more dinners that can go in the freezer. Yoga this afternoon, maybe art room, as well. I hope that your Sunday is an enjoyable one.

Relaaaaxxxxxing Jaw…

beelzeboobs-boredpanda.com

“Relaxing jaw. Relaxing face….” I’m making some progress, finally, getting back into my yoga. My husband is doing well enough now that I can take half an hour to stretch and try to relax.

I still sound like Rice Krispies, crackling and popping my way into stretches, but I’m able to stretch a bit farther, or hold the pose a bit longer now. I still find myself listening for unfamiliar sounds, or being aware if my husband is in his recliner and shifts position, but it’s getting better.

I’ll also get even more help because my massage was rescheduled to Monday. I’m really looking forward to that. My therapist, Lynn, is a miracle-worker, finding and loosening whatever knots I’ve brought in, whether I knew about them or not.

Being a hard-head, having to learn things the hard way over and over, I’ve had to LEARN that practicing yoga for half an hour or more a day is a really good thing to do for myself. It makes me move easier, makes me hurt less, makes me looser, steadier on my feet, etc.

Happy Friday 2-9-2024

Allen Skyy Enriquez – BoredPanda.com

I hope you’re having a happy Friday. My husband has been sleeping in this morning and just now got up. Amber wanted to bother him, but I managed to keep her downstairs and reasonably quiet. Shhhhh!

We’re supposed to get quite a bit of rain this weekend, particularly on Sunday. We’re pretty well stocked up right now, so we’ll ride out whatever comes, planning – like lots of other folks – to enjoy the Super Bowl Sunday.

Red Bubble

Lunch Bunch seems to be a thing of the past, though I’m having a hard time letting go. I’m finding out, one week at a time, that if I don’t initiate the calls, I don’t get any telling us the others won’t be there. Our situations have made it so it’s hard to get together now. Grudgingly, the end of an era.

My husband just came down. He was wearing a tee for the first time since he fell. I don’t know how hard it was for him to get it on, but it’s a huge step for him. He said he slept well, and thinks he was able to sleep on his left side (his broken collarbone side). I’m just glad he looks rested.

BoredPanda.com

I’ve done my yoga practice three days this week so far. I’m feeling a bit more loose now and not so sore. After awhile I’ll get our mail and go grab some things from the grocery and then get on with the rest of our day.

Hope your Friday is a good one.

Today is a big day for us. I’m taking my husband for his first haircut in several weeks. Since he usually gets one every third week, he is really feeling ready to feel a bit more in control again. He continues to heal well, though his black and yellow bruising from his left shoulder down almost to his waist is still quite impressive. He is in MUCH less pain and is getting around by himself now.

Yesterday afternoon I did my yoga practice for the first time in quite awhile. Even though I was really stiff and sore, it felt good. Now that my husband is more steady, I’ll try to do this every day. It was fun to put a sparkly silver star on my desk calendar yesterday. :0)

I’m down 18 pounds from my worst now. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to concentrate on getting MYSELF under better control now that our crisis has passed. With our weather being super nice in the afternoons, maybe I can take advantage of the unusual February weather and start walking around in our yard, as well as the yoga stretching.

I hope you’re doing well today.

Good morning! Our weather is so nice here that I’m almost afraid to say anything – that it will jinx it. It’s quite spring-like, and I’m really, really enjoying it. Shhhh! (Fingers crossed)

I’m hoping for a quiet day. My husband didn’t rest well last night, so I’m hoping he can rest a lot during the day today. I’m trying to stay quiet so that he can sleep in his recliner.

Now that he’s doing better overall, though, I’m going to try to do my yoga practice this afternoon. My body is feeling the fact that I haven’t been. I’m hoping the practice will help me loosen up again.

If this goes well, I’ll plan to try to spend some time in my art room. It seems like it has been forever since I’ve spent time up there. I’m in the middle of a piece I started wood burning. It’s patiently waiting for me…

Enjoy your Tuesday.

What a Difference!

What a difference a day made, twenty four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers where there use to be rain
” (and snow!) ~ song by Jamie Cullum

skiresort.info

We are no longer snowed in! The temperature came up to the low 40s by mid afternoon and turned our ski slope back into our regular steep driveway. Hooraaaaaaay! The next bad weather is forecast for Monday (heavy rain) and then Tuesday morning (when we’re supposed to be driving to Ft. Smith for our dental cleaning appointment) “snow showers will move in for Tuesday. Current accumulation estimates are between 1 to 2 inches of snow by Tuesday evening…..” I hope we can get to the dentist and back up to the house before it gives us a problem.

Pinterest

I did my yoga stretches like a good girl yesterday, put the third star on my calendar for the week, and felt some of the positions were getting a bit easier. I keep reminding myself that Cat Kabira, the wonderful lady in Gentle Yoga DVD series, said that stretching TOWARD the position and breathing into it were as beneficial for us as actually touching the floor when we tried to touch our toes, or…. I actually felt I was making some progress yesterday!

Alamy

SMALL RANT/PET PEEVE – I was trying to come up with Cat’s name on the previous paragraph and my mind was producing a blank, so I tried to look it up. I found “Yoga for the Elderly” or something similar and immediately bristled. I don’t CARE if that DVD is the best thing on the planet. I wouldn’t buy it because of its name. GRRRRR! Same thing as a local clothes store here called “Heifer Boutique.” I’ve probably lost my sense of humor, but even if all the clothes in there fit me like a glove and made me look like Julia Roberts, I wouldn’t go in there. I don’t WANT to buy clothes from a place of that name! END OF RANT.

I’m going to try to wood burn some wooden earrings in my art room today. I still don’t have a clue what I’m doing, but I’m ready to see if I can make something I like. Wish me luck?
