I Need These Today

This is our ‘flying pig’ that used to hang over our driveway until the pig and the huge branch from which it hung came down in an ice storm. The pig is sitting on my table in our shop now, waiting for me to refurbish it. I’m hoping to convince my husband that he would look fine bolted onto one of the huge boulders at the top of our driveway, looking as it he’s taking off in flight.

Sarcasm Lives Here

My dad considered a sense of humor a survival skill. His left arm and hand were crippled when he fell off a horse when he was three. He learned to do everything with one arm and hand, including taking great care of his family. He survived the taunting and cruelty shown him at school by making them laugh. It worked. Everyone liked him because he saw things through very creative, sensitive eyes and always added a humorous twist.

When he would compliment my dress, though, it meant my dress was too short, too ‘something,’ and he wanted me to change. It took me years to NOT look in someone’s eyes when they compliment me, looking for the ‘dig.’ I have learned to just enjoy it and say a grateful, “Thank you!”

I loved listening to his stories. He would have me rolling on the floor laughing by the end of some of them. There was one he told of he and his friends going camping by the river one night. None of them had the first idea of how to ‘camp,’ though my dad and one of his friends helped with a boy scout group. They prepared for bed, getting out sleeping bags, etc. One man started digging a hole. He explained he would use it to make sleeping more comfortable, measuring it carefully to mold to his butt. The others followed, thinking it sounded like a great idea. They all settled in for the night. Suddenly, one of the men started cursing – finally getting up and moving his sleeping bag, saying angrily, “I sleep on my STOMACH!”

My healthy sense of humor has saved my sanity my whole life. Sometimes it allows me to stand back and see a situation as if it were a movie, and I’m able to see the humor in it. Many times I laugh when it is really not a good or appropriate thing to do. I got in trouble at school because a friend and I would lock eyes and then simply collapse with laughter. Even now, I avoid eye contact when I’m amused and it is NOT the time to laugh. DON’T LOOK AT ME! :0)

A Good Day’s Work

Getty Images-Coursera

I did medical transcription and bookkeeping for 8 years at a clinic with 8 busy general surgeons. I had my hands full, not knowing medical terminology and never having done online bookkeeping, but I did it. After about 9 months, I was working 12 to 14 hours daily trying to keep up with the workload.

I asked for a raise and for them to hire a person to help ease my workload. My supervisor said they would discuss it. I was returning charts to the nurses’ area and overheard them saying, “Well, all she has to do is type what we say.”

I grinned and did just that for the rest of that day and the following. Here are some samples –

“She certainly is not just a typical internal hemorrhoid.”

“This gentleman recently was remarried and has no significant complaints to his rectum.”

“She will return in a week, next Tuesday, and she won’t be a week until this Friday, which is the day after tomorrow, no, three days from now, before the lesions on her chest could be, sutures on her chest could be removed.

“I don’t have any trouble with that, but I really believe that this, perhaps, doesn’t state something that I think is an undercurrent that we need to understand.”

At the end of this, my docs called me in, begging me to PLEASE stop typing what they said; wanting me to type what they SHOULD have said, or MEANT to say as I had been doing.

I got my raise, and I got an assistant to ease the workload.

When I resigned after 8 years, I gave each doc a copy of the ‘bloopers’ I had gathered – with what was dictated and who said each. My last day was spent joyfully listening to the laughing up and down the halls from the docs’ offices as they read. :0)
