John & Buddy – @o77buddy.bsky.social

My friend Marsha recommended an author she likes – Sharon Sala – so I’m trying one of her books. I’m really enjoying the story so far.

This is the perfect day to be doing a bit of reading. Guess what! It’s raining again! I keep wringing up the towels I rolled up and put on my window sills, then putting the towels back up. There is no point in trying to dry the towels at this point. Mother Nature is insisting that the rainy season isn’t over yet, so I’m just rolling with it, grateful that help may be on the way for my window leaks.

We met my husband, his nurse, and the doctor this morning at the hospital for a routine visit. The doctor is pushing us to let him put in. stomach tube. Harvey was lucid today and clearly said ‘no!’ when Brian asked him if he wanted that, so we told the doctor ‘no.’ We will just hope that Harvey is able to eat enough food the regular way that they can remove the nasal tube. We will see him again Thursday, since Friday will be a busy day for us.

We got a notice that our order for the turtle jigsaw puzzle had been canceled. Brian sent me links to two places we’ve ordered from before and I chose this one wiith the wonderful dolphins. Brian ordered it for me this afternoon, so hopefully I’ll have it soon.

Freepik

I think I told you that Brian insisted I start taking my clothes to the laundry rather than doing them myself. We took them yesterday, and they will be ready after 3pm today! The price was amazingly affordable and the turnaround time is certainly wonderful. They will return my stuff nicely folded in a transparent plastic bag. 😁

This is what I made yesterday. Harvey’s 82nd birthday is November 18th. I hope he likes it.

Soon it will be Election Day in the states. I will watch the results with great interest, even though I’m far away now.

I hope you have an enjoyable DRY day.

Virtual Trip

Qatar Airlines Business Class

I’ll try to take you with us as we go to our new life in Thailand.

We leave tomorrow (Wednesday) from Ft. Smith, AR. We do the quick up and down flight to Dallas/Ft. Worth. We have a 3 hour layover at DFW.

We then board for our longest flight (14 hours) from DFW to Doha, Qatar. We will be in the lap of luxury on this flight, flying Business Class, for the first and last time in our lives. The seats are arranged kind of in 4 seat ‘cubes.’ Our son will be in one facing us and we’ll be side by side across from him. Can you believe that we can actually be comfortable sleeping? Our son is encouraging us to stay hydrated, plus get up at regular intervals to go to the bathroom and stretch our legs all during this time. He has requested diabetic food menus for us, but we’ll watch what my husband orders like hawks, too, just in case.

There is a layover when we arrive in Doha. Then we board a 6-hour flight to Bangkok, Thailand. This is also Business Class. Woo-HOO!

The change from Bangkok, where we go through customs again and the flight we catch to Chiang Mai, our destination, is a short time one. Our son found a service that will meet our flight, get us on an underground train, get us through customs, recheck our bags, and get us to the gate for the flight to Chiang Mai. That was a big concern, since we are old and slow and the window to the last flight was narrow.

We will arrive in Chiang Mai in the afternoon their time on Friday, March 28th. (They are 12 hours ahead of us in the U.S. )

Our son will make one more backup of our data on our computers here, probably tomorrow morning, so I will only do a short blog post then. At that point, I will only be able to post (I hope) from my phone until he gets my computer set up in the AirBnB we’ll stay in for about 3 weeks until paperwork is signed and we can move into our new home.

I will TRY to figure out a way to send pics. I will be taking pics via my phone, but may have to wait to share those with you on the new computer.

I wanted to give you at least a virtual ride-along, though, and will communicate as best I can in the interim.

Have a wonderful Tuesday.

Hard to Believe

Pam Grout

It’s hard to believe that tomorrow we’ll be on our way to a new life.

We are happy that Amber’s new parents, Tim and Lisa, will come this afternoon for a visit. I’m sad that they live down the road from here and we just met them. They are a wonderful family, surrounding Amber with attention, good care, and lots of love. It will be nice to relax and get to know them better this afternoon. We have promised each other to text and email each other so we can keep up the new friendship (and kind of extended family).

My husband has a last haircut this morning. Michael Remillard of Tangles has taken care of us for years. We may find someone else who will do a decent job on our hair, but we’ve shared a friendship with Michael, and that is not replaceable.

Lots of details left, but we’re closing in on being able to leave tomorrow.

My husband is doing really well with the strict low carb. (Though he had started to eat some pretzels yesterday when I saw him. I snatched the bag out of his hand, admonished him, and threw that and another bag that had been in the pantry a long time into the trash. We then made a low carb snack for him. (He realized that he had just ‘thought’ about eating something, wasn’t really hungry, and felt guilty.) We took a walk around the house and out to the shop. Later on, HE announced he was taking a walk. I ‘graciously’ accompanied him. :0) We went around the house again and out to the shop, and then a bit farther, out to the old garden area. We’ll try to do that again today.

We’re finishing last-minute details. The three of us will work together to get my husband packed, organized about what he’ll wear on the trip, and our backpacks carefully packed tomorrow.

Hope your day is a good one.

Love Surrounds Us

Murray and John
My Harvey and Brian
Me hugging Murray

We had a wonderful lunch Sunday. There is never enough time with those you love, but we’re trying to see and hug as many as possible before we leave.

No news yet on rehoming our dog, Amber, and our cat, Jet (aka Monster Cat), but our son is talking to a lady who runs a grooming and boarding business in Greenwood who might be willing to work with us. A friend of mine has some neighbors who might be willing to give Jet a home. Fingers crossed.

The best news – this morning we found out we GOT the condo in Thailand in the same building as our son! Not sure of ANY of the details yet, but I’m having trouble trying to type this as I want to get up and dance. This will be perfect for us!!!!!

I’m headed to my primary doctor this morning for a last appointment after all my drama of the past month. I’m hoping she can look at my ears and figure out what to do about my continuing problem with hearing since all this started. I’ll also have to tell her we’re leaving the country, thanking her profusely for all the good care she has given my husband and me.

Things are definitely coming together now. I’m essentially packed now, just needing to throw a couple of things in my suitcase and backpack. I’ll start helping my husband with his stuff this afternoon, if he’s cooperative.

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

The glorious color in this lifts my spirits. :0)

It turned out yesterday that we did NOT have a new innards kit for the cat’s bathroom toilet that was running intermittently. We spent a long time getting it out, then made a trip to ACE Hardware. They only had the standard innards kit, so we came home empty-handed.

My husband was able to order the Kohler kits we needed on the net. I had him order TWO of them, since the other first floor toilet is the same brand, so we will have a kit on hand if the other toilet goes on strike. We already have the standard kits for upstairs, if needed.

I had a good time in my art room yesterday. I’m wood-burning and painting wood slices for Christmas ornaments, plus making layered wood ornaments, 4-ornament sets, etc. I have an idea for a custom Christmas card design and more wood-burned earrings. Needless to say, my dreams are full of rambling ideas!

It’s cloudy and 67 right now, a beautiful change we are embracing with front and back doors open, enjoying a quiet breeze through the house.

I lost pound #37! I’m beginning to believe that my interim goal of 40 is within reach.

I’m planning to cook a new low-carb chicken recipe this evening. If it turns out well, I’ll tell you about it and give you a URL to the recipe.

Have a wonderful day.

I had a pretty productive day yesterday.

I FINISHED weeding the flower planters, so that’s the end of the most important work in the yard. We are looking pretty good (for us) and working outside can go on the back burner of priorities for a bit.

I tried to do a new YouTube video yesterday of exercises to flatten your tummy. I moved right along with her most of the time, though balance was an issue at times. All these were standing exercises, but lots of turning, moving of legs, bending up and down, etc. Each exercise was repeated for 60 seconds. I guess we probably did 30 reps during that time. I made it through a little over half of the video and had to quit, out of breath and thoroughly pooped. The cute little person ran away and left me in the dust. I’ll try to do better today.

When I went to practice my yoga stretches for the first time in a while, things went well for about 60 seconds. Then Monster Cat decided she wanted to ‘help’ me with the moves. She pounced on my stomach, bit my toes, rolled on my legs, walked under me when she could, laid down on my face, tried to curl up on my neck…. you get the picture. For today’s practice, I’ll put her in her bathroom until I’m finished.

In my art room, I’m working on two different sets of 4 Christmas ornaments with layered elements, and also on one ornament that is a wood slice. It’s fun trying different techniques. I love spending time up there, learning new things.

I hope you have a happy, productive day.

My husband asked ME to program the new tach he installed on the riding mower last night. (He wanted to be able to control the RPM on the engine and keep track of the hours of run time for the mower so we can perform maintenance at the right times.)

The fact that he STARTED installing the tach 20 minutes before we usually eat dinner didn’t seem to occur to him as a possible problem. I finally got the tach programmed and THEN he wanted ME to back the new mower into the shop. I told him I didn’t feel comfortable and would rather learn earlier in the day and going forward, rather than backward. He insisted, so I did the best I could.

I did go FORWARD, though, and then managed to figure out how to do the zero turn feature, so I was then able to drive it VERY jerkily into the shop.

Fixing turkey sandwiches for dinner at 9pm was super annoying.

SO – I’ll show you the present I ordered for him weeks ago. It got lost in the mail, so the person made us a second one and I received it yesterday –

It is now sitting on his radio on the shelf above his computer in the office.

Mother Nature really has her nose out of joint lately, doesn’t she – with earthquakes (I was reading they had had 5 in one week!) in California; DEBBY in Florida and now up the coast, bringing wind and torrential rain; and OUR weather which is forecast to be 102 today with a heat index of 108. Maybe we should all get together and see if we can ‘talk her down’ or arrange for some kind of calming meds –

I’m really grateful that I can complain from the comfort of a dry, air-conditioned house, totally spoiled as I sit and type at my computer. What a lucky person I am!

A quiet day is hoped-for today. I wish you the same. :0)

The rain seems to be tapering off. We never got the ‘heavy rains’ predicted, and we were under a flood watch. I don’t know if we’ll get out today or not. It’s comfortable in here and we’re lazy. :0)

I had a surprising thing happen last night. It was time for our cat, Jet, to go to bed, so I got up from my chair. She was across the room from me, playing with something in the corner. She noticed me get up. I bent over and patted my shins. She started to come toward me. We both continued and she ended up standing right in front of me. I calmly picked her up – trying not to look surprised – and started to leave the living room. My husband gave me a thumbs up – clearly impressed. :0)

Burn Savvy

I had a great time playing in my art room yesterday. I closed myself in and ignored Jet meowing plaintively on the other side of the door as I sat down to experiment with my new wood burning kit. I’m currently trying to learn what the new tips do. I’m delighted that they heat up so quickly. I can change them while they are hot, carefully placing them in the metal tin they came in to cool off. I spread the rest of them out on my drafting table so I can keep track of which ones I want to try. I’m working on a small piece and a larger, plaque-type piece at the moment, but mostly experimenting. I’ve found a few good videos on using this new type of wood burning kit. It’s SO. MUCH. FUN. to be able to learn something new. I feel a whole new world of possibilities is opening up.

First thing this morning I got a beef roast in the crock pot. We’ll have some of that with a side salad for dinner. I hope I’m not being annoying by reporting my weight loss efforts. I’m finally having some steady success, so I want to shout it from the rooftops. Being old, having to push myself to exercise, and having a horse’s appetite, all work against me most of the time. I lost another pound though, this morning, so I’m down 33 pounds. I’m not great at keeping my mouth shut – talking, writing, or eating – so my progress lately is encouraging. My current goal is 35, so the goal now seems doable.

Pixabay

My tomato plants don’t look nearly as great as the image above, but I’m hoping I’ll find some ripe tomatoes when I go out later today. It has been simply too hot for the tomatoes to do well lately. I’m hoping that the rain we have received and the lower temperatures for at least a couple of days will help our green tomatoes ripen. My sucker plants are still on our dining table. I will plan to try to plant them in the garden planter around the middle of this month. Fingers crossed.

I hope that you are safe and cool today.

From my new “Birds of a Feather” greeting card series.

I had fun creating this new series of handmade greeting cards. The whimsical birds are made of feathers with paint accents and then pastels. 9 cards with different designs and quotes. Blank on the inside for your message.

Since summer is in full swing here now with heat indices in the 100s, I’m just going to check on the tomatoes, do some watering, and call it a day outside. I’m thinking of getting back to my wood burning efforts today.

Yesterday I MADE myself do my yoga practice after only doing yard work for quite awhile now. Our new cat, Jet, noticed me down on my mat in the living room, came over to say “hi,” and pounce on my stomach. I said ‘hi,’ scratched her, and then started to get back to my stretch. She decided that she hadn’t had enough attention and bit me, shattering my ‘calm.’ I hope she loses interest in me.

I bought some new shoes which were delivered yesterday. I’m wearing them for the first time this morning. They are Joomra Women’s Minimalist Trail Running Barefoot Shoes | Wide Toe Box | Zero Drop. I don’t remember where I got the URL for their website, but actually went to Amazon to purchase them. So far, I love them. They are really comfortable and that’s saying something for someone who feet that are essentially uncomfortable much of the time, regardless of the shoes I wear. It’ll be interesting to see how they do on the driveway, since I have problems with skidding on the gravel, trying to avoid falling on my head. (The problem is much less than it was with the new work and gravel on the driveway).

We will run some errands later, but thankfully we don’t have a bunch.

Have a wonderful, albeit hot, day.

The first part of our day is good. The sun is shining and it’s 77 degrees. Toward the middle to end of the afternoon, though, things may not be so good. We’re due for 90 degrees ahead of a cold front, rain, possible severe weather, gusty winds, hail, and flying hair balls. And THEN the rain is supposed to last through the long weekend. I have to admit the smile you may be able to see is a bit forced. :0)

Vecteezy

We have our pest spray guy coming today between 10 and noon for our routine treatment. The company has apparently changed hands for the third time since we started with them. They intelligently keep the same guys who do the spraying and the work with the customers, so we’re happy. I have the guy spray for everything, including the rare elephant, since we live on top of a ridge line in a wooded area. I saw the first scorpion of the season trying to get over the door sill into the shop the last time we were out there. That was a good reminder of why the pest company spraying is well worth the money.

Jet sprawled out on the office counter behind my husband’s computer monitors.

The Fedex guy actually drove up our driveway yesterday to deliver our cat tower! We had expected to have to check to see if the delivery had been made and find the box left at the bottom of the driveway somewhere (they put on any computer email notices that it was left on the porch). This man was super nice, said he didn’t have any trouble, and actually smiled. A definite keeper!

Right now I’m planning what I’ll do when I hear the driveway alarm indicating the pest spray guy is coming up. I’m thinking I’ll put Jet in the cat carrier and Amber on the back porch.

Have a great day!

It’s quite overcast this morning, but it’s not raining. We have a bunch of errands to do today, so I’m hoping the weather holds.

I just looked at the weather forecast for the rest of the week. Friday, the day we’re supposed to get our long-anticipated driveway repair, looks like rain all day long. :0( I HOPE they’re wrong. The driveway guys have already given me Monday as an alternate date, so help is still on the way whenever Mother Nature will cooperate.

We celebrated the cooking of the turkey breast and the new meat slicer with turkey sandwiches last night for dinner. I made my husband’s with bread and mine with zero net carb Mission tortillas. I ALSO used some lettuce from our home-grown head lettuce! The sandwiches tasted really nice.

The refurbishment of the flying pig project (one of our metal critters we made long ago) is ongoing. My husband has agreed (thank goodness) that we can put him on a boulder at the side of the driveway at almost the top and he’ll look as if he’s about to fly off, rather than trying to stand on ladders and hang him from a tree branch again. I’m planning to wheelbarrow him out to the boulder so we can see if he’ll just stand there (he’s really heavy) or if we need to weld pads on the bottom of two of his feet to attach him to the boulder.

He’s been hanging from a really strong line from a tree branch over the driveway for several years. He finally came down in one of the severe storms we had and was lying in the driveway one morning. I’ve had to straighten some of the feathers of his ‘wings,’ pry off one discolored eye (the other one disappeared), wash all the dirt off of him, and am in the process of starting to repaint him. When that is finished, I’ll put new eyes on him.

Even if you’re not lucky enough to share your day with a flying pig, I hope you enjoy it.

We got up at 0-dark-thirty this morning and were waiting in front of the clinic at 7am, since the lady I talked to yesterday told me it was first come, first served with a limited number of patients accepted, so it was best to get there as early as possible. They opened a bit early. We filled out paperwork and were called after only a few minutes.

The nurse practitioner removed 7 (of 8 (!) stitches) from my husband’s ear. She snipped the last one, saying she didn’t want to disturb it because it was embedded deeply in the rather thick scab there. She said it will now come out on its own as the scab heals and falls off. We are supposed to be careful not to bump it a lot, but it looks like it’s healing well.

We treated ourselves to breakfast at The Dari in town before coming home. As we checked for mail, the mailman drove by and handed our mail to my husband. We are in for the day now, and he’s taking a nap.

CNN

I’m still very happy that we got to see the eclipse yesterday. It was different than I expected, in that we didn’t see the whole sun blocked by the whole moon surrounded by a corona, but we saw the sun disappear bit by bit until it was ‘gone’ leaving us in a twilight state for several minutes before starting to appear again, bit by bit. It was the first one we’ve ever seen, and the last one since it won’t happen again for 20 years, so we’re happy that we actually got to see something this time.

Later on today, I’ll check my veggie plants to see if they made it through the night. The forecast said we might get hail. By the time they said that, it was already dark and I decided the heck with it. We’ll see.

I’m feeling pretty groggy since it seems we got up in the middle of the night in order to get to the clinic today. If I do my yoga and my elliptical trainer today, I will decided I have done well.

Have a nice Tuesday.

I’ve been trying to find out the results for the voting for the Top 4 on The Voice from last night and I can’t find any. I want to know if my guy Huntley made it to the finals. ARRRRRGH!

On the good side, I was sitting at my computer last night when an order came in from my Etsy site for three things – a painted tote and two painted signs. We’ll take them to the post office soon. :0)

It’s cold right now, but it’s supposed to be nice this afternoon.

Can’t beat this for a Tuesday! Have a wonderful day.

Just had to share this. This festive mouse made my heart melt.

The sun is shining. It’s supposed to get almost to 60 this afternoon. Nice.

Our wonderful plumber called and said he is planning to come Wednesday or Thursday to install our tankless heater replacement. It’ll be really good to not have to ‘wonder’ if we still have hot water or not, or if the unit will reset or not.

The tankless has been a good thing for us. We used to run out of hot water when we had a regular hot water tank. The tankless takes a bit of time to get hot, but then we have as much as we would like. Luxury!

The old system required that we install a stainless steel chimney. We paid more for that than we did the tankless system. The new unit requires PVC. My husband talked to technical support this morning, trying to get them to okay the stainless we already had, but they wouldn’t. They also didn’t give a reason. I told him that we just needed to suck it up and get it done. The new one is a Navien, which supposedly will last 20 years – probably a lot longer than WE do…

Women’s Health

Shout-out to Cathy, who MAY be undergoing her last week of radiation and chemo! Decisions to be made, but fingers crossed that the very best treatment for you will be decided. My heart is with you today, Cathy.

Empowered Parents

My computer says it’s 67 degrees this morning! The high is supposed to be 77 this afternoon and it’s raining! Woo HOOOO! We have the doors open and the ceiling fans on, airing things out and enjoying the deliciously cool breeze. I love it. :0)

Giphy

PLUS – since it’s raining, I’ll plan to do a session of yoga this afternoon – rather than weeding more flower planters – as my exercise for the day.

I think I told you I was having trouble getting meds for our dog, Amber, online, due to a new requirement that the online store contact your vet to okay the prescription. I wrote to our vet, explaining that we are on a fixed income and need to watch our pennies, and that I wanted to do what was right for Amber, but couldn’t afford to pay $40 more for the prescription. My vet’s office has now offered to match the online price for us. There are still good people in the world. :0)

Cooking at Pam’s Place –

I tried this yesterday afternoon. No yeast, no kneading, no rise time. And it was good! Even my husband said, “This is pretty good” – a HUGE compliment. I’m going to use some of it tonight to make us some grilled cheese and ham sandwiches and we’ll have some soup with it. YUM! A real “celebrate the rain and cool” dinner!

Enjoy your Tuesday.

This has been a really nice Tuesday.

While I’ve been writing these posts, I’ve also been communicating with friends and family via various media. I’ve seen some beautiful things on Twitter, and will soon look at Pinterest. I’ve enjoyed a few songs from YouTube. Scanned the news. Non-hurried morning with a cup of coffee and a chance to think about what I would like to do with the rest of my day.

I almost finished the ‘wreath’ Christmas cards yesterday that I’m making for my friends. I should finish the last step today. Then I’ll let them sit for a time before looking at them again to see if they pass muster this time. If they do, I’ll store them carefully, plus list them as a custom order on my Etsy shop, HandmadeHavenbyLinda for the holidays.

I’m still putting masking tape on the glassware I’m going to etch. I’ve etched things in our sandblaster before, but I’ve never used the delicate stencils I’m using with the liquid etching medium I’m trying before. I have no clue what I’m doing and I’m quite a bit intimidated at this point, delaying the time I actually dive in and try it. Maybe today. :0)

I had three things on my priority to-do list yesterday: gather and put the trash at the bottom of the driveway, vacuum the first floor tiles and carpet, and clean and wash out the kitty litter box. Happily, I accomplished all three. I also took my two vacuum cleaners apart, washed the filters and left them to dry, and washed the canisters. I’m really bad about doing that, so it felt good to get it done.

I have all appendages (including my eyes) crossed that the new batteries for the cordless vac arrive today, are the correct ones, and WORK.

I’ve been shooting myself in the foot lately, waiting until afternoon to get outside to work in our garden. This is a big mistake because as I age, I handle heat and humidity less and less well. It sounds easy to just get up and go outside, but I’ve set up my mornings really well (for me) getting lots of routine things done at the computer while drinking a cup of coffee. The time flies by and once again, I’m trying to force myself outside with a sweatband I need to even walk out to the garden, much less get anything DONE out there…

Last night my dinner of hamburger patties, black-eyes peas and onions went over quite nicely. Tonight we’ll have the other two patties and I’ll saute a crown of broccoli. A mystery occurred yesterday and I gained 1.6 pounds “Not eating enough” according to MyFitnessPal.com. UGH. Maybe it will come off today.

I had a truly WONDERFUL video conference call chat with our son, Brian, this morning. I just loved seeing his face and his great smile as we talked. I got to wish him a Happy Birthday almost in-person. He is well and happy, involved in all kinds of new music projects, starting another class in Thai next week, and generally loving his life. His newest goal is to try to start a meditation center for beginners so that he can work with them, sharing what has worked with him, helping them to be as content as he is. I love the idea.

We got our mail, went for my husband’s haircut, then put the trash can in the back of the truck to bring it back up to the garage before the heavy rain started. I’m about to go shut the garage door now, as I’m hearing thunder and it’s gotten really dark outside. I’m HOPING that the fact the temperature is only 58 degrees will just keep this to heavy rain, rather than hail, wind, heavy rain, flying hair balls, and possible tornadoes that are forecast for the day.

It’s time for me to fix lunch, but I wanted to check in here first. We’ll batten down the hatches and be happy that we have a warm, dry place to weather the storm.

I hope that you are safe and well today.
