Expensive Lesson Learned

face1

I saw a post on Facebook about two products by Dermalife that might help my skin, and an offer to get samples at almost no cost. I got on the website and ordered the two samples for a total of $10.94 on August 10th. I received the samples from a company called Healthy One out of St. George, Utah. As is usual with promises vs actual results, I was less than excited after using both for a week or so. I thought that was the end of it.

But NOOOOOO!

We got our credit card statement on 8/24 and had been charged four charges we didn’t recognize – one from GreenCoffee for $89.95 and the other from Garcinia for $92.53 – both companies out of Utah.  We marked these, but didn’t file a dispute until we got another charge from each company on 9/10!

The disputes went back and forth. The companies then produced paperwork showing that I had, in effect, signed a “contract” by ordering the samples, saying they could send more any time they wanted and charge me, unless I called them within 10 days to cancel the contract. There was nothing on the website that I saw, and I wouldn’t have gotten the samples if I had seen this. There was nothing on the receipt I received for the samples, either.

Since the companies were able to produce my credit card number, etc., and their paperwork about the contract, the credit card company told us that they were closing the disputes in the companies’ favor.

I called both companies involved today, asking them to be SURE my ‘contract’ had been cancelled. A guy from India told me that the contract had already been cancelled. I called the two companies (two different phone numbers, of course) but talked to the same Indian man both times.

I then called the credit card company back, asking what recourse we had, if any, if either of these companies chose to send – or not send – products and charge me for them any time they wanted. I had no actual proof that I had called and canceled.

I admitted that I felt dumb for not checking for the catch on the samples offer, but that having four different names involved in ordering of two samples bothered me. Since the disputes had been closed, I asked if a note could be put somewhere not to accept charges from either of these companies again.

The nice credit card lady did some checking. She reopened the disputes, gave us one permanent credit (I don’t for how much) and told us they would call if they needed anything more from us.

I don’t know how we’ll come out on this, but I wanted to warn everyone not to order samples online without reading every bit of fine print on the website. Check for any catches in the offer. Make sure you know what the name (or names) of the company are, and keep the receipts. File any dispute early and stick to your guns until the matter is settled.

2 Hand-Held, 1 Push Weed Whacker, and a Fire

by1

My husband is finishing running the mower and the push weed whacker out of gas so that we can store them until next spring. Essentially, I’ve been out in the yard the whole day trying to cut down what remained between what we affectionately call the ‘civilized’ part of our back yard and the hill below, mostly left wild.

by2

Since we’re getting a little long in the tooth these days, we hired a young, strong highly recommended guy to cut down stuff to open our view back up and also create a fire break in the case of wildfire. He worked as he could on the weekends, holding a full-time job with the city and also taking care of the lawns of about 20 people.

by3

I used one hand-held weed whacker which lost its cap for the cord about a third of the way through the job. My husband found a replacement cap and ordered it on the net. Meanwhile, I used the second hand-held weed whacker. It worked for a time and then I had to stop to pull out more cord, since what I was cutting was really too much for the little thing. After this happened for the fourth time, I stopped and came in to rest.

by4

My husband got out our push weed whacker that looks much like a small lawn mower, saying it would make quick work of the remaining stuff. We couldn’t get it started, though. We decided that there was condensation in the gas and had to work with it for a LONG time to finally get it running. I used it and was able to do quite a bit more, but the land slopes pretty violently down across the yard and I didn’t want to end up on my head half way down the hill with various parts cut off. We also had stuff sticking up here and there that was too much for even the push around whacker.

by5

Since the breeze was coming UP the hill, my husband took lighter fluid and a lighter down past where Shane had cut and lit it up while I stood ready with the garden hose with a sprayer attached.

by6

The fire made quick work of the remaining stuff, and there were only a couple of small spots that were up in the yard portion.

by7

My husband kept trying to get me to react more slowly to the fire, but to no avail. I did NOT want the thing to get out of control and burn the house down after we had spent all this money and time trying to prevent just that!

by8

There’s still some neatening up we can do, plus more burning we can do if we get a really good rain, but the main part of the clean up is done now. We can again see the valley from anywhere in the back yard, and we have a reasonable fire break, making me feel a lot safer.

by9

I had planned to do a lot more in the yard today, but I feel good that we at least finished one of the things on our to-do list.

Trimming the Edges…

HubPages

HubPages

I’m trying to clean up the edges along the civilized part of our back yard with the weed whacker.  Some of the weeds I’m trimming come up to my chest!

So far, I’ve done 2 half-hour sessions and have killed one weed whacker. The cap that holds the weed whacking cord came off,  the tabs that hold the cap on broke off, and the spring, cord roll, and cap pieces fell all around me.

I brought that weed whacker in the garage, along with all the pieces, thinking maybe we can order another cap for it.

Meanwhile, we have an older weed whacker that is working, so when I go out again as soon as I’ve cooled off, drunk more water, and gotten my breath back, I think I can finish the job.

Earlier today I was planning to do this trimming, create leaf mulch, and do two sessions of yoga….. Maybe not so much……

Getting the Lard Off Progress (?) Report – November 2, 2016

Amy Adenoro Terrell-www.keyword-suggestions.com

Amy Adenoro Terrell-www.keyword-suggestions.com

I’ve been on a roller-coaster since about the middle of October. At that time my husband finally got serious about trying to avoid sugar. That might sound easy, but it’s been pretty traumatic around here. He LOVES sugar and was in denial about his problem and its inevitable consequences. I’ve been scrambling to figure out what we’re eating while trying to find something he can drink instead of soda, something to eat besides candy, and then some kind of dessert for him to look forward to.

I’ve also found, in my research so far, that simply trying to get sugar-free everything isn’t the answer. First my husband is REALLY sensitive to any alternative for sugar aftertaste. This week we’ve finally settled on Arizona Peach Sugar Free Tea, after buying and trying at least six other things. We found sugar-free hard candy easily enough, but he’s finding out the hard way that eating too much sugar-free candy has its consequences. He’s cutting that back on his own now. We’ve found ‘no added sugar’ pies that are good, and he likes a kind of cobbler that my wonderful cousin-in-law/friend Murray gave me.

I also discovered in my reading that, even if you cut out all the sugar you can, your body uses carbs to manufacture its own sugar! He tried giving up his cold cereal, but was unhappy, so we’ve done the next best thing – Special K is the best one for diabetics, since it’s not made from wheat.

Since low carb eating is also good for diabetics, I found a low carb for diabetics cook book. This is an ongoing process, but it took my attention and motivation away from my own challenges. In the past week I’ve gotten serious again, trying desperately not to eat after dinner, except for my orange dream bar as I used to do. This has been remarkably hard to do, since I’m staying up until at least midnight because my husband’s restless leg problem is better if he goes right to sleep, rather than our reading in bed as we’ve done for a hundred years or so. I found that delaying our dessert until 10:30 or so helps with my eating anything in sight…

________________

I’m finished with the excuses now. I’m back on my “low carb and exercising” horse again. With all the flailing around for almost a month, my weight loss is now 41 pounds. My inches loss is now 18.25″.

I started yoga (for old broads, 60+) about a week ago and I have to say I enjoy it. I’m not in any danger of becoming a gym rat, but I don’t dread doing yoga and really do feel relaxed afterward. Today I’m planning to do the last two sections on the 2nd DVD: “Legs” and “Overall Flow” (I think it’s called.)  The DVD series is called, “Gentle Yoga.”

We’re supposed to get rain late tonight and into tomorrow morning, so I’m planning to do weed eating across the back yard where we have to clean up a bit after wonderful Shane cut down a bunch of stuff to open up our view again and create a fire break. I also plan to create a lot more leaf mulch while the leaves are dry, harvest lettuce, etc.

I’m disgusted with myself that I allowed myself to be thrown for a loop over the changes needed in our lifestyle. I excuse myself a bit because I’m very fond of my husband and want him to live – feeling better and better – for a good, long time. That involves finding replacements for the important luxuries in his life. He seems to be adjusting pretty well now after some depression. He still threatens to stop all the good efforts if his sugar numbers don’t get lower as fast as he would like. That’s an ongoing discussion as well…

I feel good that I’ve stayed on my low carb plan really well the past two or three days now, and some of the regained lard is coming off. The yoga is making me feel looser and stronger, though I did have a bit of leg aching last night. I think I’ll feel better and better as I continue my practice.  The last two sections today, plus my day doing yard work, will be a really good amount of exercise for me today.

I hope that you, also, will try to

I Wish…

"Dandelion Fluff" - Paul Militaru Photography

“Dandelion Fluff” – Paul Militaru Photography

Did you blow on a dandelion as you made a wish when you were a child? I have fond memories of that – wishing for the stars – and then some.

Today I would do it again, if I had a dandelion. I would wish for as many days like today as possible.

It was, in some ways, an ordinary day for us. We did our chores around the house, went to town and did our errands. I did two more sections from my new yoga DVDs and was so relaxed I took a nap. While we were out, my husband asked me if I wanted him to cook steaks on the grill tonight. It was a perfect night for it. The temperatures cooled off and there was a beautiful breeze on the deck. We plugged in our rope LED lights that go all the way around the inside top of our deck, so it looked quite festive. Our dogs and cats were with us, enjoying chasing the occasional ‘something’ across the yard in the grass.

We just finished our glorious dinner, celebrating the weather, the fact that we’re trying to get healthier, and that we are together. I ate my steak, enjoying every bite, and my husband also enjoyed a baked potato, although I convinced him to be satisfied with a much smaller one that he is used to eating.

He is happily enjoying a book now. Recently I re-read “To Kill a Mockingbird” for the umpteenth time. I got on Netflix awhile back and ordered it, so I’m about to go in, grab my ice water, and enjoy one of my favorite movies of all time.  The day was all I could wish for. I hope my virtual wish, looking at this beautiful photo by Paul Militaru, comes true.

Folding Myself into a Paper Airplane, and … – Take 4

funny-yoga-pics.co

funny-yoga-pics.co

Today I started on DVD # 2!  I did two sections: one on “spinal health” and the second on “hips.”

I’m delighted that, for the most part, I can still keep up with what the teacher is asking me to do.

Exceptions are –

  • when she asks me to sit on the floor with my legs straight and spread out as far from each other as possible, and then to bend the top of my body from my hips toward the floor in front of me. OOOH! Do I feel THAT stretch!  She tells me, though, that as long as I’m making the attempt – and breathing into the stretch – eventually I’ll “open up.”  I just hope I don’t crack and break first…
  • the other position giving me some trouble is starting on your hands and knees. Move one leg forward as far as possible while stretching out the other leg behind you…
  • lying on my back and relaxing. It takes me a minute or two, pushing my low back down to the floor over and over, before I can do this.
  • I feel a tightness across my back right beneath my shoulder blades that complains when I’m doing some of the poses.

Tomorrow I’ll try the “legs” section and the last one, which is called, “overall flow.”

My eventual goal will be to do DVD # 1 one day, and DVD # 2 the next.

So far, even though I’m trying all this for the first time EVER – my body is feeling ‘looser.’  It’s a vague feeling at this point, but I feel less tight in my hips and back, and I’m feeling my hip bones when I walk, separate from my torso, if that makes any sense. I’m more aware of different parts of my body and am consciously pulling my shoulders down away from my ears.

I’m not kidding myself. I’m doing a lot of really good stretching and deep breathing that are really good for me, but I’m not doing anything like standing on my head against the wall or folding myself up into a pretzel shape. I may never get to that, but what I’m doing is really good for me and I’m grateful that I found this 2-DVD set called “Gentle Yoga” (for people 60 years old and up).

Lewis November Mailbox Decoration

Since November 11th is Veterans Day, we put up our boots, helmet and rifle mailbox decoration to honor those men and women who have given their lives for our country.

This is the front of the decoration. It’s one of our smaller decorations these days, but it was one of the hardest for me to paint. My husband was a Marine, so this decoration was even more personally important to do the very best I was able to do.

I just finished my “Gentle Yoga” for the day. I managed to do the new section for Lower Back today, followed by the sections on Head, Neck and Shoulders (and jaw); and then “Joints.”

I am very relaxed right now. I particularly need the section on lower back because mine is stiff and tense. The most trouble I have with the whole DVD so far is trying to relax at the end of each section on my back. I spend a long time trying to push my lower back down to the floor, trying to get the tension to ease up so that I can fully relax. It really shows I need what I’m doing.

The other difficult thing is getting UP after each section! :0)

I’m very happy I bought this 2 DVD set called, “Gentle Yoga.” It is meant for people just like me – over 60, sedentary, and have never done any yoga before. The teacher is quite pleasant, explains what she’s doing and why, and gives you time to follow. She’s pleasant without being effusively pert and violently happy – a thing I really like.

Tomorrow I’ll try to do the first section on the 2nd DVD. My goal will to be to do at least one section a day, building to doing one DVD one day and the other DVD the next.

Bullets, Spaghetti Squash and Cauli-Rice

shootingpractice

It’s important to my husband that I am able to defend myself if the need arises. To this end, he built this set of metal ‘falling plate’ targets. We shoot at the plates, knowing that if we miss the bullets go into the high hill of slag behind the targets.  (This pic was taken about a week ago, when I hadn’t taken the fabric shade off the garden behind the slag pile.)  When you hit a plate, it falls back and down. When all the plates are down, you stop shooting, set the plates up again, then go back to kill them again. :0)

shootingpractice3

Here’s another view of the targets. Today he added half a brick to each of the plate rods, making a nice counter-weight. I hit more than I missed, but need practice again soon. He wants to work on the targets more, since the small one on the end fell down if you hit any of the other three plates.

sq-beyondzucchini

Beyond Zucchini

I’ve gotten lax about eating, my excuse being I’m trying new things to satisfy my husband’s sweet tooth now that he has to avoid anything with sugar. I’m trying to get back on track, so I bought a spaghetti squash and a head of cauliflower at the grocery today.

I split the spaghetti squash in half long-wise, then put the halves face down on a tray lined with aluminum foil. I baked it for 45 minutes at 350 degrees, then pulled it out and let it cool. When it was easy to pick up without burning myself, I took a fork and scraped out all the squash inside. The one spaghetti squash yielded 4 cups of nice spaghetti-looking squash. I put a cup into each of four sandwich bags and then put the bags inside one gallon freezer bag, labeled it and put it in the freezer. That will be good for four dinners for me, while I make some actual spaghetti or elbow macaroni for my husband, topped with spaghetti sauce, Alfredo sauce, or other goody.

cauliflowerrice-yupitsvegan

Yup! It’s Vegan

I cut up the cauliflower into chunks. I put the chunks through the food processor, pulsing. I measured out the cauliflower into one cup increments, putting them into sandwich bags, then into a gallon freezer bag. I got 5 cups of cauliflower, meaning 5 meals for me, when I make rice for my husband.

My husband is really turned off by eating spaghetti squash or cauliflower, but that’s okay. He’s trying to avoid sugar and I’m trying to limit my carbs. This works well because I can make the starchy stuff for him, heat up the squash or ‘rice’ for me in the microwave, and make one sauce to go over both.

Sugar-Free, Low Carb Blueberry Muffins

blueberrymuffins

I’m not sure there IS such a thing as sugar-free, low carb blueberry muffins, but the mix is in the oven as I type. I’m making them for my husband, primarily, since his sweet tooth is very appreciative. I’ve been scouring the net and our stores for things he’ll consider a treat even though he’s having to really watch his sugar these days. If these pass muster, I’ll write more about them tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

*P.S. Judgment – Pass

They smelled wonderful, both while I mixing it up and later, when I took them out of the oven. I was hopeful. I served us each one hot, with a small pat of butter.

My husband ate one half of the muffin. He thanked me for trying, but gave the other half to our pit bull, who thought it was wonderful. I wasn’t enthusiastic, either. It wasn’t worth the 8 carbs. Sigh.

At least the doggies can have a healthy treat mixed in with their dog food for several days. And the search goes on…

Money Well Spent

back1

When we were looking for land on which to build our home over 30 years ago, we wanted a lake, a nice creek, or a great view. We found that we couldn’t have all of them, so when we found this piece of land on top of a ridge line in Greenwood with a great view to the south, we jumped on it. When we were sitting on our porch several months ago, we were dismayed that we could no longer see down the hill into the valley due to a huge surge in growth of what we call, “weed trees.” They come up like a rocket and grow no matter what. They’ve particularly enjoyed the wet spring we had and the fairly mild summer.

We were also upset that we had lost our ‘fire break’ that might protect our home in the case of wild-fire.

We hired a man who works in Greenwood, handles several people’s lawns on the weekends, and agreed to take on the project of cutting our weed trees down. We agreed that he would come when he could and would pay him by the hour until the job was done.

He finished today and we’re delighted. This is our view taken while I’m sitting in a chair on the porch.

Here’s another shot from another chair on the porch.

And another. You can see that I still need to use the weed whacker to clean up the edges between the ‘civilized’ part of the back yard and the hill, but that won’t be too large a job.

Folding Myself into a Paper Airplane – Take 2

AskIdeas.com

I told you that I recently received my set of 2 DVDs called, “Gentle Yoga”, especially geared toward people 6o and above. I was still wondering if this would work for me when I listened to the introduction and then tried the section for “Head, Neck, and Shoulders” a couple of days ago. I found that I was able to do everything the teacher asked, realizing that as I practice, I should be able to stretch better and better, breathing into each movement.

I had to miss yesterday because I wanted to finish my purging/reorganizing/and deep cleaning our master bathroom project.

I tried the section on “Joints” today. This concentrated on ankles, knees, hips, wrists, shoulders, neck, and spine. Although I could hear parts of my body snap, crackle and popping like the proverbial cereal, I was again able to keep up with the teacher. We always end up lying on our backs, trying to fully relax.

Today I had some trouble relaxing after doing all the exercises. My back was tight and painful, and I had to concentrate on relaxing enough to lie flat. After a couple of minutes I was able to lie perfectly flat with no pain and was able to relax fully. This time I knew I could trust her to start talking again at the end of the relaxing time or play some music or something, so I was able to relax even more than I did the last time, once my back allowed.

I had more trouble getting up off the floor after the practice than I did doing any of the exercises. :0)

I am really encouraged by the DVDs and the teacher so far. She emphasizes that this is all an ongoing process, not something to be accomplished. No one cares if you can touch your toes or not (thank goodness!) or how far you can bend or stretch. As long as you do what you can, you benefit. You end up feeling more relaxed and in touch with parts of your body – some of which you didn’t realize you had!

I’m planning to try the next section – for the lower back – tomorrow.  I – who am probably the most sedentary old lady on the planet – am actually looking forward to it!
