Official Start of Growing Season in Arkansas 2017

onions2

I just finished working in the garden for the moment. I planted the bunch of Sweet Georgia Onions we bought recently. Here you can see crop rotation, as it is in square foot gardening – You don’t plant the same plant side by side. It would actually be better if I didn’t plant them cat-i-corner to each other, too, so they’re less likely to spread disease or bugs. I keep track of where I’ve planted things so that I don’t plant them in the same squares NEXT time.

You can also see the irrigation system. We have a sprinkler mounted in the center of each box, attached to each other and then attached to the main hose. We have them hooked to an outside above the ground faucet on which we have a timer so that the plants are watered each night during the main season. It isn’t hooked up now, due to possible freeze, so I just watered by hand today.

onions3

This is another view of the raised bed garden we finished in the fall. There are six 4′ x 4′ wooden boxes (two rows of three boxes each) mounted on metal support ‘tables.’ We use string to divide each wooden box of Mel’s Mix into 16 squares. I planted the sweet onions in 8 of the 16 squares in this box today.  I can’t describe what a pleasure it is to simply walk into the garden, putting the plants and the implements needed on top of a square, then planting things at chest height, not having to bend over double, till the soil, try to get all the weeds out for planting, then get down on hands and knees to plant, and then finally water.

We decided last year I was definitely too old to do all that anymore. We built the boxes and the supports, then stored them beside the shop under tarps until the spring garden was finished. I went ahead and planted the fall garden on the ground as usual and we installed the new raised bed boxes on the side of the garden that wasn’t being used. When the fall garden finished, we installed the last three boxes.

Today we strung the string on the three newest boxes. I need to mix and add more Mel’s Mix (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 equal parts of however many compost types you can find. – I used cotton burr, barnyard, and mushroom.) Then the whole garden will be ready to plant when the danger of frost has passed.  In the above picture, you can see the trash cans beside the shop where I keep the components of Mels Mix ready to put together.

Meanwhile, fingers are crossed for these sweet onions, even though our average last frost date is April 10th…

I absolutely love this. I think that if ‘I’ were doing it, though, I would put down black plastic and maybe some shot-crete on that before building my design to keep weeds from growing up between the stones. It’s gorgeous, though, isn’t it?  Thanks so much for sharing it with me, Ann.

Thursday Thoughts

Whatsapp Status 77

Whatsapp Status 77

It’s a beautiful, sunny morning here in Greenwood, Arkansas. We stayed up very late last night/this morning, binge watching part of the past season of “The Magicians.” The new season has started, but somehow we got lost and didn’t watch the whole season last time. We rented Discs 1 and 2 and got interested again. We watched 3 last night and are expecting 4 to be in the mailbox today. Once we get caught up we’ll try to pretend we’re normal again. :0)

It’s supposed to get to 66 today! I really find it hard to believe. It’s really too early for this. It has snowed many times on my birthday in March, so I’m expecting that the daffodils that are blooming profusely and the iris buds that are trying to bloom will be cut off by a blast from Mother Nature soon. My spirits are lifted looking that the beauty, though.

Today I’m contemplating two things: spreading “Weed & Feed” on the lawn and planting Georgia Sweet Onion sets in my raised bed square foot garden.  It’s not SUPPOSED to freeze in the 10-day forecast, so I’m hoping that if I hold my mouth right, all will be good on the onion sets.

celery2

I now have 7 celery plants in soil on the window sill. Here are the youngest.

celery1plus1weed

These are the two middle plants.

celery3

These are the oldest. I’m planting to move whatever is still alive to the garden around the 10th of March.

celery-spinachsprouts

I finally have a few spinach sprouts!  Who knows if they’ll live, get brothers and sisters, or what, but my fingers are crossed and hopes are high.

My efforts at Weed & Feed for the lawn are because we decided that our lawn was really terrible due to moles, voles, gophers, and whatever other burrowing animals are in the area. They seem to have sent out a memo, inviting all their friends and relatives. We were happy with our lawn care folks, but even they said that they didn’t really have anything that was effective against these tiny creatures. We’ve killed the grubs they feed on, but that didn’t seem to make much difference. Since our lawn is a mess and I can use the exercise, I’m just going to spread weed killer and fertilizer myself and hope for the best.  Picture me doing the ‘mole-stomping-dance’ all over the yard as I crank the weed & feed pellet distributor.

I’ll take pics when I get the onion sets planted.

I hope your day is productive and that you do something you truly enjoy.

And the front.

Mr. Natural was a “white-bearded, diminutive sage-cum-charlatan, ranging from charming, free-wheeling early ’70s stories to the disturbing, controversial stories of the 90s”. He’s one of my husband’s favorite characters due to his controversial nature, fitting my husband’s sense of humor to a “T.”

Low-Carb Blueberry Muffins?

Laura in the Kitchen Wild - Wikia

Laura in the Kitchen Wild – Wikia

I’m trying a new recipe this afternoon for Low Carb Blueberry Muffins. They are in the oven now. I’ll give you a report if they’re good.

My husband went to get the mail, coming back with, “It’s yucky out there!” The rain is wonderful, we agree, but the cool temperatures and wind make it seem pretty raw. We’re thankful for a warm, dry house today.

UPDATE:

The muffins weren’t great, but they were better than NO blueberry muffins. Since we haven’t eaten any in more than a year, they tasted pretty good. Will keep looking for another low carb recipe, though. That said, my husband just asked for a second helping…

Hooray! It’s Raining!

Heflin - Open Image Studio

Heflin – Open Image Studio

It’s 43 degrees, gray, and raining. Just beautiful!

We have been flirting with getting rain for several weeks now. It always bypassed us, and we need rain badly. Today I woke up to lots of wonderful rain!

The dogs were not as appreciative as I shooed them out the door to take care of business. I’ve done that several times today, since they stay out approximately 30 seconds and then start barking to get back in. :0)

I took my umbrella and walked around it in a bit. Our yard is really soaked – something it really needed.

When this dries up a bit – maybe tomorrow or the next day – I’ll spread the “Weed and Feed” granules we got from Yeagers. I’ll also spread more grass seed, as the moles, voles, and other ‘oles’ have tunneled all over the place dislodging our nice grass and making a mess.

I hope the weather in your part of the world is to your liking today.

I wish I had some cute boots like the little girl in the pictures….

“Seriously Simple Chicken Chili” Recipe

To Simply Inspire

To Simply Inspire

I didn’t have a photo to go with Dana Carpender’s “Seriously Simply Chicken Chili” recipe, but the one above is representative.

If you’re trying to eat low-carb, I highly recommend at LEAST two recipe books by Dana Carpender :  200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes and 300 15-Minute Low-Carb Recipes. You can find other nice ones, but between these two books, you have a wealth of healthy meals, either from the slow cooker or quick meals. She uses basic ingredients and simple techniques that have my husband wanting more – a rare thing with healthy eating!

We’ve eaten her “Seriously Simple Chicken Chili’ from the Slow Cooker book several times before, but I failed to pass this recipe on to you.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 16 oz jar prepared salsa
  • 1 tablespoon Chili Powder*
  • 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon concentrate*
  • 3 oz shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 6 tablespoons light sour cream

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Put chicken in your slow cooker
  2. In a bowl, stir together the salsa, chili powder and bouillon, making sure the bouillon’s dissolved. Pour the mixture over the chicken. Cover the slow cooker, set it to low, and let it cook for 7 to 8 hours.
  3. When the time’s up, shred the chicken with a fork. Serve topped with the cheese and sour cream.

YIELD:

6 servings, each with: 263 calories, 9 grams fats, 39 grams protein, 6 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams dietary fiber, 4 grams usable carbs.

MY NOTES:

  • I cut up the chicken before I put it in the crock pot. THEN, I use two forks to shred the chicken a bit before serving.
  • I use 1 TEASPOON chili powder because my husband and I don’t like spicy or hot.
  • I use 1 TABLESPOON chicken bouillon concentrate because we love it.
  • I haven’t done it, but it seems like this would freeze well. One of these times, I’ll double the recipe and freeze half for another time.

ENJOY!  Thank you, Dana Carpender!

Folding Myself into a Paper Airplane – Help for my Back

Buzger

Buzger

I told you that I recently did ‘something mysterious ‘ and messed up my back. It took almost a full week of heat pad, Ibuprofen and a pain patch to get it to ease up. Yesterday I finished the job by doing my own group of yoga poses to stretch my back in all directions, slowly and carefully.

Once again, I’m grateful that I found “Gentle Yoga” by SixtyandMe.  It’s almost as if events in my life are now categorized as “Before” or “After” I started practicing yoga. Since I’m definitely getting “long in the tooth,” I’m so happy I found some DVDs expressly created for folks like me, who have never tried yoga before. They know that the people trying to follow the practice might have health issues, might be sore from surgeries, are probably stiff, and are probably worried that they won’t be able to do it at all.  (My biggest problem when I started – and remains – getting up off the floor! I’m working on it. )

Cat Kabira eases you into each pose, giving you several alternatives, stressing that if you’re trying to do the pose, you’re getting the benefits. She stresses there is no perfect yoga pose, that you’re trying to listen to your own body, breathe into the poses, and provide what your body needs to get stronger, more flexible, and feel better.

I’m the poster girl for ‘couch potato.’  I really don’t ‘enjoy’ exercising. I don’t have a group of cute outfits and live to go to the gym. But I’ve finally created a good regimen for me for right now, including yoga Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; elliptical trainer Tuesday and Thursday, upper body strength exercises on Saturday, and lower body exercises on Sunday. By the end of each week I feel I’m doing a good job of moving more. I’m not bored with my regimen and I’m feeling a difference. I feel a bit looser when I walk. I feel muscles working now that I didn’t know I had.

So, I still don’t know what I did to cause my back to hurt. I sure don’t want to do whatever it was again. But if I do, I’ll try to ease into some careful stretching sooner with my yoga. I’m beginning to consider it not only good exercise, but a lifesaver.

Practice Happy

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Happiness comes from deep inside you.  It’s a feeling that is almost a “skill” in that the more you practice making yourself happy, the easier it gets.

In the beginning you might have to work at looking around and seeing all the good that surrounds you, recognizing how very lucky you are to be enjoying another day, how wonderful it is to be surrounded by interesting people, how terrific it is to have more exciting things you want to do than you have the time or energy to do them, how special it is to have someone you love.

As with anything else, no practice is ever perfect.  If you work at it every day, you’ll get better and better.

Friends and Rabbits

rabbit-havahart

Havahart

One of our good friends was having trouble with her computer yesterday. She called to see if my husband might be able to revive it. We spent most of the afternoon there. My job  was to keep everyone away from where my husband was trying to work so he could concentrate. He finally got her computer going after running virus scans and a Windows repair disk on it., plus some other stuff.  There is more work to be done, but the basics have her able to use it again.

She recently got a rabbit hutch and a rabbit! I didn’t take any pictures yesterday, but the one above looks much like the one she bought. She has an outside hutch and an inside cage now. She had a big plastic plate of colorful salad stuff and veggies for him. He had the run of her house (with her watching him carefully). He’s basically litter trained, but he tends to chew on cords or the edge of her rug, so she has to watch him carefully. He comes to her and allows people to pet him. It’s great fun to watch him.

rabbit-natlgeo

National Geographic

Her neighbors found a wounded wild baby rabbit recently and brought it to our friend. His nose was skinned and his hip was hurt. She didn’t think he would live, but he’s thriving so far. She allows him a bit of freedom, too, and he seems to love it. He lives in her bathroom at night.

The biggest surprise is that the rabbits get along with her other pets: a dog and two cats. She is careful not to let ‘the baby’ come in contact unsupervised with the cats yet, but the dog lies down between the rabbits, and the larger rabbit gets along fine with the cats.  The rabbits try to get on top of the dog. She is very patient, only snapping a bit when one goes too far. The rabbits get the message – at least for a while – and aren’t upset by the dog trying to set limits.

Our friend lost her husband about a year ago now. The animals give her lots of company, plus she is busy trying to take good care of them. And when her grandson comes to visit – which is often – she sure has a full, happy house!

Potted Cat

pc2

This potted cat is definitely ready to harvest. I don’t know why Abby loves to sleep in a pot under the table on the back porch, but she does it every time we’re enjoying airing out the house, as we are today.  We could have saved a LOT of money on cat  beds.

In other plants, the celery is continuing to do well. I now have seven plants in soil on the window sill. I’m planning to move them to the garden mid-March, if they’re still alive then.

My spinach seeds still weren’t sprouting. One of my books suggested putting the seeds in water before planting for about 30 minutes. I did that this morning and then put the pots on the window sill. Fingers crossed.

I’ll plant my Sweet Georgia Onion sets this week some time. I’m hoping, but don’t really believe, that we’re past killing freezes yet.

Meanwhile, I was checking this around the yard and had a big surprise. My daffodils are not only sprouting – they’re BLOOMING!

I’m really ready for spring. We’ve had a wonderful winter, with hardly any ice. I would love it if we could simply sneak into spring now, allowing the sprouting plants the longest possible life without getting zapped. These sweet daffodils really raised my spirits today.

“Dear Sean” Reblog

Parenting

Parenting

As always, I look forward to an email from Sean of the South  each morning.  He received a special request from Kaylie, and boy – did he deliver! Here is Sean’s post –

________________

“DEAR SEAN:

We just moved to Clovis, New Mexico. I really miss home and all my family are in Florida. I am nine years old… My parents are divorced. And I am a very good artist.

I was wondering if you could tell a story about our situation. …If you don’t mind, I would like you to use words kids understand (but still a make it funny and emotional).

Your friend, KAYLIE

DEAR KAYLIE:

I have a story.

Long, long ago, in a land far away, there was a chubby little first-baseman who enjoyed sourdough biscuits and fried fish. Like you, his family changed. His daddy disappeared. And when that happened, the first-baseman’s world turned black.

One day, this boy went walking in the woods—for it is well-known that first-basemen love forests—and he found a creek near the river.

It was filled with magic catfish who talked to him in small voices, saying:

“No fishing poles you use,
Nor trotlines will ever work,
You will never catch us,
You chubby little jerk.”

This made the boy angry. For who were catfish to talk this way? The first-baseman had been fishing since before he played first base.

So, the next day he visited with a fishing rod. But as it happened, the boy had lost all faith in himself after his daddy died. Because of this, he caught no fish.

The catfish teased:

“Try and try,
You dumb pup,
You’ll catch us never,
You’ve already given up.”

Their singing displeased the first-baseman, for he knew the mystical scum-suckers were wrong about him.

So, the next day he fished again. Nothing.

And the whisker-fish sang:

“Fish, ye, at sundown,
Fish, ye, at sunup,
It won’t work, ye young fool,
Because you’ve given up.”

Now the boy KNEW the fish were mistaken. Mainly, because poets quit using words like “ye” after the invention of the monofilament lightbulb.

Thus, the little boy shouted, “You’re wrong about me! I won’t stop trying!”

Then, he remembered a song his daddy once sang. And so he recited in cut time:

“I will work all day,
I will work all night,
And though I may fail,
I will try and try,

“For I am strong,
Though humble I may be,
To give up is wrong,
For someone believes in me.

Then, magic.

The first-baseman felt his pole bend. And I am pleased to report that he caught a catfish the size of an NFL player’s torso.

He carried the creature home where his mama made fried catfish and sourdough biscuits. And they ate saturated trans fats happily ever after.

Kaylie.

I know life is tough. I know you miss your home, your friends, and your daddy. I know how hard it is to keep going. But don’t give up, sweetie.

Don’t ever.

Because I know a first-baseman who believes in you.”

The Problem with a Clean Kitchen

P&G Every Day

P&G Every Day

This isn’t MY kitchen, but I wanted to give you a mental picture.

The problem with a clean kitchen is that I don’t want to mess it up once it’s good, deep down clean. It’s a result of my being a slob. If my kitchen were ALWAYS eat-off-the-floor clean, I wouldn’t think a thing about going in to make pudding – or worse – my husband going in to make pudding. I wouldn’t care if we were doing something a bit messy, like sausage balls. I would calmly be planning lunch in a few minutes and figure out what I’m fixing for dinner later.

Because I’m about as far from “Suzy-Homemaker” as one can get, now that I’ve spent an hour or so taking everything off the counters, cleaning the counters and all that goes on them, the island, the kitchen desk, the microwave, the stove, the double sinks, the fishbowl, etc., the stove burners are in the dishwasher and the nice smell of lemon greets you as you enter. The floor is clean from my efforts over the past two days. I couldn’t feel less like tackling my list of ‘to-do-cooking’.

I want House Beautiful to come photograph. My kitchen IS pretty when it’s clean. :0)  I want everyone I know to come over and remark on it. I want my husband to notice it and ‘ooh’ and ‘ahhh’ appropriately.

If I were less of a slob I might hire a kitchen fairy to do the deep cleaning while I kept up with the day-to-day….

My husband just came into the office. The first thing he said was, “Wow! The stove looks good!”  I think I’ll keep him.

Roller Coaster

123RF.com

123RF.com

Today the high in Greenwood, Arkansas is forecast to be 83. (It’s already 78.)  Every day or so we’re having a lovely, spring-like day followed by a couple of days with highs in the 50s. It’s no wonder that so many people are having allergy problems and getting sick. It’s glorious right now, though, and we have our front and back doors open to air out the house. Even though both dogs have just been out, they ran out onto the back porch to find spots in the sun to enjoy.

I’m itchy to start planting veggies in our raised bed square foot garden, but it’s definitely premature. I’m going to hold myself to planting Georgia Sweet Onion sets next week and we’ll see what happens with the weather. My birthday is in March and it has snowed here on my birthday. I think we probably have some real winter left.

Yesterday after I did some more cleaning, I gave myself the gift of some time in my art room. I’ve told you that got the idea for “Gingerbread Cookies” Christmas cards and wooden ornaments a long time ago, but have been having trouble making time to actually get upstairs and work on this. The custom Christmas cards are finished and are on Creative Artworks.  I’m having a lot of fun “decorating” the painted wooden ornaments now. It’s just like baking sugar cookies, except on wood. I’ll show pics when I have a reasonable number of samples finished.

When I finish these, I have a really nicely shaped glass bowl in the shop that I’m planning to do a mosaic design on. There are only a couple of stages where mosaic work is work-intensive (meaning you can’t stop until that stage is completely finished) so it’s a nice project for this time of the year before I get busy in the garden and the flower beds.

I ‘yoged’ yesterday, stretching the last of the soreness out of my back, so I’m feeling sassy now. It’s such a pleasure not having to ‘worry’ about having to cough or sneeze; plus being able to get up or down, or into and out of the car without pain!

We have nothing we HAVE to do today, so I’m enjoying a leisurely pace, doing what occurs to me, enjoying the day. I hope that YOU are enjoying YOUR day, as well.
