Everblade Follow-Up

In November of last year I ordered an Everblade knife after seeing the ad on TV. I waited and waited, but it didn’t come. In January of this year I finally wrote to the people and said, “Either send it or refund my money.” Miraculously, in a few days I received an email that my knife had shipped!

I received it on January 25th, and I told you then on the blog that I would get back to you when I had had a chance to use it.

I love it. This is a large knife and was advertised that it would cut through tough squash easily, as well as cut bread nicely. I have cut the bread, and it works really well. I haven’t tried the tough squash yet. I love the nice, thin slices I can get with meat. Even my husband noticed the niceness of our roast beef sandwiches. It makes quick work of slicing celery for our tuna fish salads.

The blade comes in a holder that has a sticky thing on the bottom. I stuck it between two wooden block holders I have on my island, and it works there well. Each time you take the knife out or put it back in, the built-in sharper is supposed to do its trick, keeping the blade sharp.

Since it isn’t stainless steel, it needs to be hand washed. This is easily done, but I have to warn you to be careful when you do it. I got a bit too close to the edge, even though I was trying to be careful, and cut my finger a bit. I can attest that the knife is REALLY SHARP.

It works nicely, cleans up easily (being CAREFUL!) and is ready for the next job. I use it almost every day – sometimes several times a day.

So even though I was afraid I had been scammed at first, I am very happy with my purchase and recommend it.

A Good Read

“Sawyer Reed is heading home after rambling for seven years after the Civil War ended. His family’s cattle ranch is waiting, and he is ready to get to work. On his way home from Mexico, Sawyer runs into a mysterious woman who will change his life and his future forever.
Josephine Alverez is a chef at a posh restaurant in San Antonio, Texas in the year 2020. She is off for a weekend of fun when she is sucked into a miniature blue twister. Jo is thrown back in time to 1872. A man saves her life after she is nearly murdered, and Jo must come to grips and adapt to this new world. It is the wild west and she has fallen into an old fashion western.”

My husband recommended this book to me, and loaned it to me on my Kindle when I finished reading the last book in the In Death Series, # 51, Shadows in Death by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts.)

This is a very intriguing time travel story. The characters were well drawn. When I finished the book, I was a bit sad because I would have liked it to continue.

I recommend this book. I will look for other books by S.A. Ison.

If you read it, please let me know what you think.

Art Room Honesty

Full disclosure – if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you already KNOW what a slob I am, and along with that, a lousy housekeeper. I decided that my current project will be cleaning up my art room – AGAIN.

The only time my art room is clean is when I’m not in there and have no current art projects going on. I have some images I took for my shops on Etsy, and they look really good. But nothing is happening in those images. :0)

I started cleaning in here this afternoon. I decided to start with my drafting table. I made a bit of progress, but then got caught up in a new idea for painted magnets. I started rummaging around, gathering things to try my new idea.

Under here is a drafting table, believe it or not.

And under here is a nice work table.

My art room has actually looked worse before. Sometimes it’s a challenge to walk from the door to the drafting table. :0)

Tomorrow I’ll show you more of the cleaning project, plus progress on the new magnets!

Hope = Planning for the Garden

sapronova.35photo.ru

I’m starting to plan my spring garden.

I’m HOPING to be able to start and grow some plants this time, rather than hoping our local resources will have what I want when I’m reading to plant.

A lot of people do this routinely. Part of my hope is that THIS TIME I’ll be successful, having some good, healthy plants that I can transfer to my garden when the time for the last spring frost for my area is past – April 5th. I will try to plant seeds in my seed starter in tranches, so if one group doesn’t make, another may. It would also be good not to have all of my plants needing to be harvested or eaten at one time. Talk about hope!

So far, I’ve found that the last spring frost date is April 5th, and the first fall frost date is October 31st. I found my seed starter tray and brought it in. It has a cardboard covering that gives directions for use. I have a bunch of seed packets, also with instructions.

LOTS of reading and research to do before actual planting, but my excitement is growing as I type.

I have a raised bed, square foot garden into which I would like to transfer these plants. Before winter started, I weeded the six 4′ square chest-high planters we built. I mixed barrels of Mel’s Mix (vermiculite, peat moss, and at least 3 different types of compost) and filled up the planters to the top. Then I covered the planters with tarps to try to keep the weeds to a minimum over the winter to make less work when I start my spring garden.

I will try to take pics of each step in the process – success or fail – in case you’re interested in following the process with me.

Hope springs eternal that I will have success this time!

Diet and Exercise Run Amok

dumpaday.com

It’s run amok because I am a stress eater. My appetite would choke a horse on regular days. Under stress, I could win awards at the hot dog eating contests at the fair.

When we were dating, my husband would suddenly decide we should stop and get something to eat – a thing I later realized was a reaction to my getting terse, sarcastic, and maybe even downright ‘snipe-y’ when I got too hungry.

My appetite is endless and I end up stuffing my face with all sorts of things I shouldn’t eat. Afterwards, my more mature side comes out and takes the lead. Happily, MOST of my days are more controlled. I’m having a bit more trouble lately.

The good thing, as far as I’m concerned, is that each day is a new one. I’m coming up with more and more things to do that are fun and distracting – or productive – to do, resulting in fewer ‘stuff-my-face’ binges. I’m trying to plan our meals and any snacks. When my husband brings home things we shouldn’t eat, I put them somewhere I don’t see them – or, better yet, have HIM put them somewhere HE can access them if he wants, but that I don’t run across them continually.

I’m writing down my elliptical practice and my yoga stretches on my to-do list, scheduling them in my day as priorities. As a part of the to-do stuff is one project each day that will make me feel productive. (Today’s project is working on a clean-up of my art room.)

SO – as I type, my mouth is firmly closed. :0) I’m going to heed this suggestion –

Almost Perfect Beginning

iStock.com

Can you see me grinning?

I just enjoyed an ALMOST perfect beginning to my day.

Our son lives and works in Thailand. Before he left years ago, he set up a secure chat program for us to use, plus a secure video chat program. He is a really good communicator, so I can almost forget that he is across the world from us.

This morning we not only used the chat program, but switched to the video program. I got to see his wonderful face, and watched him smile and laugh. My heart simply filled. My husband came in and said “Hi.” Our son thought he looked “handsome.” :0)

We had such a good visit. The only thing that would have made it perfect was one of his hugs. As far as I am concerned, he gives the best hugs on the planet. If I don’t squeeze him hard enough, he lets me know. They make me cry they are so good, healing all the little places that could use a little love.

I hope that you are close to your kids – geographically or with good communication.

Beyond priceless.

When Dinner is at 6:00

forwarded to me by a friend

I have always had one healthy thing – a healthy appetite. My appetite would kill a horse.

I can eat a full meal – actually an amount that includes servings for me AND my friends, relatives, and acquaintances… and then feel hungry again a short time later. I am teaching myself now what a ‘portion’ is. That varies, of course, by the food you are eating, but is usually much larger for something you consider truly odious and a dot in the middle of the plate for something you love. :0)

I am learning things that help me put off ideas of eating, like drinking a bottle of water several times a day, but particularly in the middle of the night, if I can’t sleep, I could eat the side of a house AFTER drinking the *^&%$_@$% bottle of water.

In my NEXT life, I am coming back several inches taller, maybe 5’7″ or so. I will be one of the people who ‘forgets’ to eat, or eats only as ‘fuel.’ The high point of my day will be my time for exercise – one that makes a good amount of endorphins. I will enjoy the idea of needing to GAIN weight and my clothes being too large.

It’s good that I live in a time where – if I can get my act together – there is plenty of help handy to get the lard off and keep it off. Right now I have a elliptical trainer in our garage and can do my yoga stretches in my living room. I have several exercise DVDs I can use to address all kinds of issues.

I have TWO new stores in town REAL FOOD and STU’S CLEAN COOKIN’ providing healthy individually portioned frozen meals I can pop into the microwave, rather than having to cook a lot. I have good raw veggies and some sugar-free ranch dip I can enjoy with them.

The dogs above and I are on the same page, as far as being READY whenever there is any chance of food. I am trying to get to the point where I’m so distracted by doing fun things that I ‘forget’ what time it is, and am actually surprised that it’s meal time… well, it COULD happen. :0)

Taking Time to Play

The Artful Parent

Yesterday I started making a dozen hand-painted wooden magnets. This is a fun thing. I’m enjoying coming up with different ideas for each one. I’m also going to see about making some magnets with painted clothespins. These can be done inexpensively, so if people like them, they can buy several without spending a lot. I hope the magnets make people smile.

I’ll post some pics later.

Lucky

Paul Sweeney – SayingImages.com

I am in the middle of a re-read of book # 47 (of 51) of the J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) In Death series before diving into the newest one to come out in paperback.

I’m lucky because reading is such a large part of my life.

My parents started teaching me to read when I was very young, exasperated that my mom, dad, and brother were all engrossed in a book, a crossword puzzle, and a comic book while I sat in the middle of the living room bored out of my mind. I looked from one to the other and finally said, in a loud voice, “I wish to HELL I could read!” Instead of beating my rear for the language, my mom got one of my books, sat on the floor with me, and began to change my life.

I became a teacher, earning my Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist, using my guitar to help my sweet students learn phonics so that they had the tools to sound out unfamiliar words on their own. (That, and other things the public school frowned on, led me to start my own reading clinic, teaching students from kindergarten to adults who needed missing parts filled in so they understood what they needed to do to make sense of things.) We never actually made a profit, so I had to move on after 3-1/2 years to make money to help support our family.

After going through the school system myself, and then, particularly while earning my Masters while working full time, I lost my love for reading. I would find myself reading the newspaper, a magazine, or a paperback book as if I would be tested on it when I finished, the tension gathering in my neck and shoulders. It took me awhile, but finally I was able to relax again and simply dive in to learn something new, share someone else’s experience, or just dream.

Now I can’t imagine trying to live without reading. I find it difficult to name something else that changed my life for the better as much. It has saved my sanity – I THINK :0).

I am lucky to have several authors that I consider so wonderful I want to enter the worlds they have created over and over. Each time I do that, I find something I missed or have forgotten that enriches me, deepens my appreciation or understanding, fills my heart again.

I hope that you, too, are surrounded by people who share their expertise and creativity with you through their writing.

Just Don’t

HASfit.com

Yesterday I cooked a beef roast in the slow cooker. I fixed some rice, made some gravy with a keto type thickener, rather than flour, and we splurged with some corn – something we love but hadn’t enjoyed for a long time. The dinner was good and my husband was quite complimentary.

The NEXT thing was the important NEW thing.

I put the leftover rice into individual meal containers. I put in some of the beef roast, corn, and a spoonful or two of the gravy. I then sealed the containers and put them into the freezer.

I know. It doesn’t sound like anything to write about. The thing is, we USED to just put the leftovers in the fridge and finish them off the next night. NOW we EACH have two more meals to eat when the time is right – meals that are a ‘portion’ that regular humans eat, rather than just grabbing large bowls and dividing the leftovers up.

This is a huge difference for us and I feel happy. We had plenty for 4 more meals. We RECOGNIZED that, and divided things up so that eating the way normal people do will be EASY for us.

HOORAY!

Declaring Victory –

123RF.com

We took the bed apart, down to the air mattresses and pumps. We used soapy water all around the pumps hoses, and then around the edges of the mattress on my husband’s side. Everything was nice and firm and we found absolutely no sign of a leak. He said the firmness was still up from last night.

We’re not sure if the jostling around that we did got something back in place, more settled, or more secure, but we are declaring victory. We have the main part of the bed put back together now and are waiting for the mattress cover to get finished in the dryer. Then we’ll put it on and add the fresh sheets.

A lot of activity this morning, but it’s good to know that even if we continue to have a slow leak, it isn’t because of something serious.
