Trip to Town

We had a good time at Lunch Bunch. Kay and Bud were there. Bud seemed touched that we remembered his birthday with a card. He said one of his thermometers read 116 yesterday. Our shop thermometer read 110, and the one under the deck roof showed 108. UGH. It’s ‘only’ 97 right now, but we’re under both a ‘Heat Advisory’ AND an “Excessive Heat Warning.” Not sure why we rate both, but it does get your attention.

Dreamstime.com

We’re still having to drive miles out of our way to get to and from town since the bridge between us and Greenwood was taken out completely and is being replaced. We drove past our driveway on the way home so we could go check out the progress.

This stock photo gives you an idea of what is going on, but our road is completely closed off. There is a HUGE hole where the old bridge was taken out and they are working on a 3rd of 3 humongous concrete supports that go all the way across the road from one side to the other. There is a big tractor/digger/crane beside the hole which is dug far down below where the old bridge was. I’m not sure what happens after they get that 3rd support poured. I don’t have a clue how they will go across from one support to the next – in line with the road… I’ll try to take some pics next time we go.

We’re home for the day now and I’ll start my projects for the day as soon as I finish this. Stay cool and hydrated.

Today is Lunch Bunch. We’ll leave in about an hour. I’m taking a birthday card to Bud today.

____________

Today is forecast to get to 104. I don’t even want to THINK about the heat index. We MAY get some relief by Monday.

I’m more than ready to dance with Gene Kelly in any raindrops that fall, although I certainly won’t look as graceful as he.

Yesterday I got the “Go-out” table cleaned off and July’s spreadsheet bookkeeping done. Today’s projects are –

  • cleaning off my kitchen desk area,
  • plus finishing paperwork shuffling from yesterday,
  • plus getting some chili started in the crock pot.

Vigilance

Imgflip

I wanted to warn you about a scam.

I received an email today telling me that a company would be automatically renewing my service contract with them. They named the amount. The company was someone we have done business with in the past. They said that if I wanted to renew I needed to do nothing. If I didn’t want to renew, I was to call the phone number.

Neither my husband nor I remembered having signed up for a contract, but we certainly didn’t want whatever it was renewed, so I called the number. The connection was terrible. The man seemed to be from India, but the connection was SO bad he said he would call me right back and see if the connection was better.

I decided to get online and contact Customer Service so I could make sure I wasn’t charged. I was asked several questions about the email I received, and I was told it was a scam. The agent gave me the url ftc.gov so that I could report the scam, which I did. I’ll watch our credit cards to make sure the charge didn’t go through, and if it was, I’ll contest it, even though it will probably mean changing our credit card again – something I truly hate.

This was a slick scam. The writer of the email had the logo of the company on it. He knew my email address. Even though I consider myself reasonably vigilant, I fell for this one. Be careful.

“Go-Out Table” Clean-Up

Before – kind of a “catch-all” place for ‘stuff’ coming in and out for errands that we’re too lazy to put where it belongs. Gradually it builds until it’s an avalanche waiting to happen.

After – Now you can actually see that there is a table there! :0)

Thursday Thoughts 8-3-2023

Sent to me by my friend, Carol. :0)

With our ACTUAL temperature forecast to be 105 degrees F. this afternoon and an ‘intense heat warning’ yesterday, today, and tomorrow of 110-115+, you can be sure THIS old lady will be happy as a clam staying inside enjoying the a/c and feeling very grateful. My husband will probably drive down later to get the mail, but that’s it for outside today, I think.

I made a BIT of progress on cleaning up our ‘go-out’ table in the dining area yesterday, but my husband needed me to type for him while he was chatting with Microsoft Support, so my progress stopped there. I’ll try to get at least a bit more of that done today.

My big push is on paperwork and bookkeeping today – exciting, huh! :0) I’m trying to clear the decks so that I can play in my art room without feeling guilty. I’ve tried a couple of times lately, but soon after sitting down at my drafting table, I start thinking about all the things I’m “supposed” to be doing and my joy in being up there fades away. It’ll come one day.

I hope you’re managing to stay comfortable whatever weather you’re having, reaching out to people you care about, and even arranging to have a bit of fun.

Too Hot to Handle

Digital Mom Blog

Actual temperature forecast to be 104 today. I have no idea what the “feels like” temperature will be. All I know is that IT’S TOO HOT! I’m eagerly awaiting the possibility of rain late this weekend or early next week.

We’re leaving for errands in a few minutes. When we get back, we’re in for the day.

I finished my spraying for weeds yesterday. I’ll give it a few days and then see where I need to treat again. My husband is smiling at the turning-brown-and-crunchy grass.

__________

Yesterday I cleaned up and reorganized the dining area. Today I’ll tackle what we call the ‘go-out table,’ a catch-all for many of the things we should have been putting where they belong, but landed there because we were too lazy.

As you can see, the baskets are full-to-overflowing and things are getting ready to topple off the table. Hopefully, I can remedy that today.

I hope you have a calm, quiet day, insulated against weather extremes, with a hug or two to help you through.

Deeper Cleaning

Good Housekeeping

Since the heat index is creeping up, (115 today) – I’ve been working on choosing an area to if not make ‘wonderful,’ at least improve – by throwing away stuff, re-arranging what’s left and doing deeper cleaning.

Today’s choice was our dining area. We have a huge Lazy Susan in the center of our glass dining table. It was overflowing with meds we decided to try and then lost interest in, plus do-dads of all flavors, plus…. It was completely filled and the area AROUND the Lazy Susan was filling up, as well. We had SO much ‘stuff,’ it was making it harder to clean the table. I decided that today was the day on the dining area table and the top of the buffet next to it.

The next area to be tackled is what we call, “The Go-Out Table” where everything in the world (give or take a FEW things) go to live. (You can see it in the background of the upper picture of the dining area.) It’s a mess. I have studiously ignored it due to laziness and ‘other priorities,’ but it’s getting to the point things will start avalanching soon.

I’ll see if I can at least get started on that before I’m planning to mix Killzall and spray for more weeds around 5pm today. Wish me luck?

Tuesday Thoughts 8-1-2023

The 1st day of August means 1st-of-the-month chores.

_____________

Shout-out to Sweet Cathy, who has her first chemo treatment, 2nd dose of radiation, and doctor of oncology visit today. Trying to send her hugs and strength today.

Shout-out to Bud, who is celebrating a birthday today! He’s a member of our Lunch Bunch group. He’ll have to wait for his card until Friday, but I’m thinking of him and wishing him well today.

_________________

The weather is still not “something to be trifled with,” but help seems to be on the way if we can make it until Monday, when we have good chances of rain through Thursday! HOORAY!

Yesterday I mixed and sprayed TWO 2-gallon containers of KillZall weed killer. I’m planning to do the same today. Then I’ll wait and see what happens and respray where needed.

I got stung/bitten by what looked like a horsefly, but I reacted badly, my hand and wrist swelling up and itching madly. I took two Benadryl tablets and rubbed Benadryl ointment all over my hand, wrist, and part of my arm where it was red and swollen and itching. It calmed down overnight. It’s still swollen, but not itching at all. You have to look carefully to see the swelling, so I’m good.

My goal now is to cut way down on how much time my husband and I have to spend in the yard. The sun is really strong and risk of sunstroke is high. My husband scoffs – but he does that to a LOT of things lately, so I’m trying to spray where he has trouble mowing, and try to keep it that I don’t have to weed whack as much.

_______________

Since school starts here August 14th (I find it hard to believe.) I used to be a lifeguard in the summers, as well as a teacher for 8 years in the public schools, and there was no problem between the two. Now I couldn’t have both jobs, since the pools are open until Labor Day.

Facebook

A school bus passes in front of our house twice daily. For this reason, and the fact that school starts soon, we decided to go ahead and change our mailbox decoration to welcome the kids.

“Yosemite Sam” – the kids are too young, probably, to recognize this cartoon character, but I’m hoping they can Google him.

I feel sorry for the bus drivers trying to pick up their group of kids in this area. Since the bridge is being redone and there is no through traffic, I’m not sure what they have to do to get to everyone. Has to be taking a lot more time than it used to.

I hope August is a good month for all of us.

Strength Sapped

lolcuteanimals.tumblr.com

I’m feeling good that I finished weeding the rock beds along the front and back of the house yesterday. I also sprayed Killzall (a product recommended to me by my good friend Cathy) to try to keep the weeds from sprouting right up again.

I’m planning to mix up another 2-gallon container and start making my way around the house spraying the areas my husband can’t get to when he mows. I’m stiff and sore from my efforts over the past two days, so this is all I’ll do outside today and then try to get in a session of ‘old-lady-yoga-stretching’ this afternoon.

Our heat index for the next several days is all the way up to 115. (Only 105 today). I shouldn’t gripe – the actual temperatures have been like this, and higher, in Phoenix for a LONG time now.

Pinterest

I looked on my weather website the morning and saw this beautiful symbol! If it is to be believed, we have a good chance of rain starting Sunday!!!!!!! This old lady will be outside dancing in it if it’s true. :0)

I hope that you are having nice weather where you are today. If not, I hope that you can protect yourself from whatever excess you’re enduring from Mother Nature.

Enjoy your day.

Rock Garden Project Finished

It took 3 sessions today to finish, but it’s done. The rock garden beds in the front and the back of the house are weed-free. The final step was to mix up some KillZall to hose over the rocks in order to try to prevent a quick resurgence of weeds.

The heat index is 106 today, so it’s nice and toasty out there. It didn’t take long at all for me to feel like I was frying like a piece of bacon, so I did 20 minute sessions for the most part.

It feels good to have finished that. I’ll mix up more KillZall to spray around the yard tomorrow so that my husband has an easier time mowing. He has a riding mower, but it’s not one of the fancy ones that you can turn on a dime, so there are many places in the yard he can’t get up close to. If I can do a good job with the weed killer, it should make his job easier and quicker.

I hope you’ve had a good day.

I WANT this sweet owl. What a beauty! With my luck, he has a terrible temper and hates old ladies, biting chunks out of them before they realize what’s happening….

olallie-daylily garden

Yesterday I weeded the front rock bed and half of the back. Today I’m hoping to finish the project and then spray with KillzAll to hopefully prevent a quick resurgence of the weeds.

The weather people are continuing to predict that ‘It’s GOING to get hot.’ Hahahahahahah The heat index is supposed to be 105 today and more impressive the next several days, so I’m just trying to get what I need to done in short sessions and not worry about it.

I hope you’re having a fun weekend, staying cool and hydrated. I’m going outside to play in the weeds now. :0)
