Distracted

Nanea Hoffman – Sweatpants and Coffee, LLC. – “Distracted”

I vacillate between reading the news, reading just the headlines, or not reading the news at all. I feel the same about social media platforms. When all this is too grim, filled with too much bad stuff, hate, and stupidity, I take a break from it all.

Priorites in my life –

  • I read.
  • I draw or paint.
  • I puzzle.
  • I take a walk.
  • I take a nap.
  • I exercise.
  • I listen to music.
  • I dance.
  • I look for things I find wonderful that I want to share with you on the blog.
  • I watch a favorite movie.
  • I reach out to a friend.

These things remind me not to get “distracted,” as Nanea Hoffman says so well, by all the stuff going wrong.

I’m lucky to have many wonderful priorities in my life that make each day worth living. I can make the world go away “when the world is too much with us,” as said by William Wordsworth, the English poet.

I think it’s a definite survival skill to make a go-to “sanity” list for ourselves and encourage people we care about to do the same, reminding ourselves of all the wonderful things we could be doing rather than stressing out over things we usually can’t control anyway.

  2. That was me today. Distracted. One of our twin granddaughters was sick and both my daughter and son-in-law had to work so I went next door to sit with her. she’s almost 9 and does well at home alone (probably a relief for her to not be bugged by her twin and older 14 year old sisters), but you know. I’m old school and feel someone should be home with them, especially when they’re sick.
Now, mind you, I have literally been there when the other twin was walking through the room and carrying her “sick bowl” (that’s what they call it, in case they puke), and she did a projectile vomit that made me about pee my pants laughing… nooo I didn’t laugh but I wanted to! It was like a freakin’ movie scene! I could NOT believe it how nonchalant she was about the whole thing! When I throw up I am ridiculous! I act like a toddler and stomp and cry. It’s NOT a fun scene. Suffice to say, I know they don’t need me when they’re sick.
Now you see how and why I got distracted and little done on my book. But I did get half of my Christmas cards written and addressed!

    • Life does get in the way, doesn’t it. I’m glad you took the time to be with her, whether she technically needed you or not. Emotionally it’s comforting when someone cares enough to sit with you when you’re sick. I don’t care how old you are. You and I share our sense of humor. I can picture the other twin and the sick bowl, projectile vomiting across the room while she held the empty bowl. I got into trouble a lot of time when laughing was not considered ‘appropriate.’ Good for you on getting ANY Christmas cards written and addressed!
