Harvey Update

This is my terrace! I’ve never had one before. This one is about the size of a postage stamp, but it’s big enough to put a clothes drying rack on, allowing me to wash out a few things saving trips to the laundry in the future. I will be particularly pleased to be able to rinse out towels and my workout clothes.

Harvey was discharged from the hospital and moved to the nursing home yesterday afternoon. We have been to see him twice there now.

Yesterday he was actually alert and trying to talk to us. He recognized us (whoopie!!!) called me “babe” and kissed my hand repeatedly. He said a lot of stuff that made no sense, but was trying to communicate. The nursing home will feed him low carb food, and this will help him a lot. They send us videos of him! Today’s were of his physical therapy. We got there later to visit, and he was determined to sleep, having eaten well and exercised. He had the same book about Thailand on his chest. It’s written in Thai, so he can’t read a word. Maybe he is just looking at the pics.

Anyway, the staff is making sure someone is with him, helping him do daily things and making sure he is comfortable.

I was encouraged again today, even though he didn’t know we were there or interact with us.

  1. Baby steps, don’t get discouraged! Harvey will probably make consistent, small improvements over time, and even the smallest steps forward are still progress, and shouldn’t be overlooked or cause one to lose hope! Life changes and achieving goals often involve a series of small, consistent steps rather than sudden leaps! 😉

    • He has made a lot of progress since he first had the stroke. The professional, experienced, caring people will help him improve in whatever way he can. I get discouraged, but I will never lose hope. Thanks for your caring words 🙂

    • Then yes, Harvey knew you and that’s fantastic, Linda! You made my night!

      • I’m glad, Sheila. I wish I knew more what to expect. I realize that no one knows what will happen, whether the connections in the brain reject, compensate for parts not working, or are prone to shorting out again. Or something else. Communication is such a complex process, and even the experts throw up their hands, saying everyone is different.

  2. Oh! This is fantastic news, Linda! Both about your balcony and of course, about Harvey! Wonderful!!
Did Harvey used to call you babe, or is this something new? I’m always curious because as the brain heals, sometimes information is lost and we gain new! It’s such a curious thing! Brain science continues to evolve!

I love your terrace! You can now get outside, get some fresh air and sunshine and just enjoy and admire the view without having to watch out for traffic. Drying clothes will also be a plus.

I truly admire your positive attitude, as always. If you need to take time out to just sit down and bawl, that is OK, too. Tears are cleansing, and it feels so good at times. I said something at work one day a few years ago about having a good cry, and the doctor I worked with asked what I meant about a good cry. I said, “If you have never had one, I don’t think I can explain it to you”.

  4. Yay! I’m so glad Harvey recognized you and tried to communicate! That must have been so exciting! Probably he will start to recognize and talk to you more and more as the days go by 🥰🙏🏻

    • I really hope you’re right. He got tired super fast on communicating today. I told him I was so glad he was awake, and he answered, “I woke up for you.”
It went downhill rapidly after that, with him insisting the place had a white rabbit and they let it in his bed with him…
We are taking him some books tomorrow. He has always been a voracious reader. When we were there we laughed because he was totally engrossed in a TV movie whose audio was in Thai with subtitles in Mandarin 🤣
