Animal Update 3-4-2024

1) I told the vet that Amber was still vomiting from the one pill we gave her Friday with food to fight what we all thought was a bladder infection. We now have 4 anti-nausea pills to give her one per day. We also got some canned puppy food on the way home that we hope she can tolerate for a couple of days.

2) The vet basically gave Abby a death sentence. She has a tumor (he thinks) on her right kidney. He took x-rays, did blood work, examined her thoroughly. She has bad arthritis in her back legs. He showed me the enlarged kidney that is inflamed, misshapen and surrounded by a ‘cloud’ of ‘something else.’ He doesn’t think the surgery is a good idea, given the tumor, the arthritis, sugar in her urine, and the fact I told him she has a bad intermittent cough. She is 14. We okayed an injection for pain that is supposed to last 30 days. We also okayed an injection of antibiotic also lasting the same amount of time, which may make the bleeding better.

We have had a very expensive week with them, right at $1000 – only to learn that Amber was NOT the one who had the problem (and that was only found by accident by me), and an end-of-the-road notice for Abby. UGH. (The pills we got for Amber were NOT refundable.)

SO – We concentrate on trying to calm down Amber’s sensitive stomach and enjoy every minute of the time we have left with Abby. We have shared a good life with her. She has been a happy, loving cat and our lives have been richer for having known her. We will watch her carefully to make as sure as we can that she isn’t suffering.

Oh, that is so sad. I am glad that you were able to have so many good years with her. Life’s about changing; nothing ever stays the same. Loss of any kind is hard.

    • Thanks for your kind words, Donna. I really appreciate them. We have just allowed Amber in on the carpet with us. We’re hoping that isn’t a mistake. I gave her her first (of four) anti-nausea pills when we got home from the vet. We have agreed that if Abby wants to come in AND we have time to sit and hold her, we will let her in. Then we’ll put her back out. It’s a work in progress, but that will allow us to have some quality time with her and NOT allow her to pee and bleed all over Amber’s bed. Thanks again.

  2. Oh I hate when beloved pets get close to their end of life! 😢 But as you said, I’m glad you enjoyed many years with her. My heart goes out to you.

Good morning Linda. I have 2 kitties that are 17 years old, brother and sister. The male is Thierry and sis is Birdie. We are in hospice care with Thierry; he has had very bad arthritis for a year now along with hairball and bowel issues. Each month he has a steroid shot for his bowels and pain, and a new drug that has helped his arthritis immensely. He has gotten so skinny that it is difficult for us to see. His sister is not in the same place yet thank goodness but she too is getting arthritic. Our cats have always been indoor kitties. I know how hard it is to go through this but we have been blessed with the time we have.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you as you care for Abby and Amber.

    • Thank you for your very kind note. I really, really appreciate it. Our dog, Amber, did not get sick overnight, so I think she’s on the mend. I brought our cat, Abby, in yesterday for a cat love session. When she jumped down, I got up and put her outside again. I’ll concentrate on getting as many of these sessions in each day as I can. Again, taking the time to write is a wonderful thing for you to do. You’ll be in my thoughts with your two fur babies, too.

  4. Just now seeing this. I have a cat the same age as Abby, Muffin. Because of her kidneys she’s now blind. Doing the same, just appreciating every moment I have with her, and like you, my life has been so much more special because of her in my life. I hope Abby is still with you and doing ok.
