Wednesday August 20th

Calm

Very soon we’ll be leaving to see my new doctor in follow-up. 3 months ago we went for an initial visit, and my blood pressure was so high she prescribed blood pressure meds on the spot. Any other issues could wait. We went back in a month and things were better. She suggested I lose weight and exercise. (Surprise๐Ÿ˜œ)

It is now 2 months later. I’ve been going to the gym daily with our son, walking a mile on the treadmill and then tweaking my workout in various ways that are supposed to be more effective. I’ve lost 8.55 kilos, or 18.85 pounds since we saw her last. She will be doing bloodwork, but I will have to wait a day or two for the results. I’m hoping we’ll see some improvement there.

I’ll have the afternoon to myself once we get back from that. My friend Marsha wanted to know if my art has improved. I’ve been trying to learn to draw better and then painting the sketches. I don’t know if I’ve improved or not, but I’m having a really good time trying. Here are some of the latest –

I charged my new hearing aids overnight with no problem and got them in this morning. Everything is still really loud, including my own voice. Thankfully, Brian installed an app on my phone that will allow me to adjust the sound, boost voices, and more. I’ll tweak it today, continuing to adapt my BRAIN to being able to hear things like light switches, napkins being crushed, water being sprayed, etc. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ. It’s WONDERFUL to be able to hear again. I’m SO grateful to be trying to adapt to such a great thing!

Wednesday 8-6 Thoughts

As we were out walking this morning, Brian pointed up into this tree. At first I was distracted by all the incredibly lush leaves. Then I noticed the beautiful pink blossom. And THEN I noticed the bunch of bananas! I guess I never thought about bananas. I knew they grew in bunches, of course, but I hadn’t gone beyond that. These are the small bananas grown here, rather than the giant ones we had in the states. Sad to say, for many reasons I don’t eat bananas anymore, but I can sure appreciate seeing them grow!

Our gym was without power today so we found a park to wander around in. There were lots of people walking, jogging, or just strolling, so we had a lot of company. It was getting ready to rain, so it was cooling off some, a thing I really appreciated. The last time we visited this pretty place, I had to stop and rest several times. This time, I didn’t need to stop at all, so I must be making progress in my exercise efforts.๐Ÿ˜

We just got home from visiting my husband at the nursing home. He was more alert than last time, but was spouting a bunch of stuff about needing to get to the airport to go back to Tulsa. (This is from around 50 years ago.) He DID look at me and say he was grateful we came to visit and that he loved me. He also said “I’m sorry I’m a mess,” and I almost lost it right there.

We brought him this wooden cube toy today. He showed some interest in it at first and we thought it might give him something fun to do with his hands. We said our goodbyes and were waiting for our Grab ride when his nurse came out and said he was calling for us. We hurried back to his room. Apparently he wanted us to take the cube home with us. We almost missed our ride, and we’re not sure what was going on there. I have it back on my shelf and we’ll try it again later. We have more toys on the way we hope he’ll like.

We had 3 minutes or so of real communication in the over an hour we spent there, but I live for those moments now.

Two of my latest drawings/paintings. I’m having a lot of fun trying to draw fun pictures I see on the net.

I’m slow, but I’m having fun trying to work this jigsaw puzzle. I am determined that before I croak I will finish it and post it on the blog. My son has said I won’t finish it, in effect daring me to give up. ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜œ

It has been raining off and on all day. I didn’t have a lot of laundry this morning, so I’m just trying to finish a few things up, moving them back and forth between my rack on the balcony and hanging from various places inside. I must be adapting at least a little to the weather here. I fell asleep this morning before we were due to leave to go visit Harvey. I woke as if someone had nudged me, went out to the balcony, brought my few things inside, and then the rain started as soon as I shut the balcony door.

I hope that you are finding some fun things to do today.

My heart just melted when I saw this cute little guy.

Things are moving right along here. My husband and son are handling some errands while I hold the fort here this morning. This afternoon a friend is picking me up so we can have coffee and visit. I’m really looking forward to that.

I’m starting to make decisions on what I’m going to take with me. Some of it is easy. No cool or cold weather clothes! No boots, coats, sweaters, etc. Only hot weather clothes, except for the actual flight. I’ll start putting things out later today, where I can see everything.

I’m probably going to wait to call for the oxygen guy to come get his supplies and equipment. I haven’t used it in a week, or at night, or even when we walked so far at the hospital yesterday, so I don’t think I need it anymore, but there is no reason to rush thing, either.

Lots and lots of details left to handle, but our son is handling things calmly and carefully, so we’re in excellent hands.

Are you doing anything fun/exciting/challenging? I would love to hear about it.

LAZY LOW-CARB FINDS – I’m really happy to have found 4 things to share with you!

Great Value – Walmart
  • We have always driven to See’s Seafood in Fort Smith to buy fresh shrimp, maybe a couple of times per year – lately not that often. The shrimp is fresh, beautiful, but expensive for us, plus a lot of work for me. I found this Great Value x-large Frozen Shrimp at Walmart recently and I’m really happy with it. All I have to do is thaw it, pull the tails off, and serve to have a nice shrimp cocktail, which we enjoyed last night. The shrimp is already cooked, peeled, deveined. There is a jumbo size, too, I think, but this was really nice. We had a shrimp chef salad two nights ago and then the shrimp cocktail last night. I have another bag in the freezer. I’m looking for a good, low-carb recipe for a shrimp casserole. (2 carbs per 3 oz serving (about 5 shrimp) 0 sugar.)
  • I feel as if I hit the mother lode with the next three on the list of finds – KETO bread, ready to eat. I’ve tried to make myself make keto bread, rolls, etc. from recipes. I’m just too lazy. I don’t want to spend all day, every day, fixing food. I just want to lose the lard, get more fit, keep the lard off, without a whole lot of hassle. Yesterday we shopped at our local Harps grocery. I checked the bread section, not really expecting to find anything. I found KETO sandwich bread, KETO hot dog buns, and I just found out there are KETO hamburger buns available, as well. AND, just to put frosting on the cake, the brand name is “LEWIS Healthy Life.” You can’t beat THAT with a stick! The hot dog buns are 1 carb per bun. The sandwich bread is 0 net carbs per slice. The hamburger buns are 1 net carb per bun. All are high in fiber, something I’m trying to increase, so it’s a win/win. Since bread is one of the main things I’ve been missing, I’ve been eating Mission 0 Net Carb Tortillas in place of bread, and they’re all right, but this will be a really nice change.

We’re having a quiet day so far today, and I’m hoping to make it up to my art room today. Enjoy your Wednesday.

I’m sending hope and good wishes to Florida, hoping that Milton isn’t as bad as forecast. I’m hoping that the responders on the ground can act quickly to help people affected. The two people I know are not in the mandatory evacuation areas, so I’m hoping they’ll be safe.

We have lots of errands this morning, but should be home by lunch time.

The APRN who saw my husband and me at the doc’s office yesterday was pleased with my weight loss efforts. She wants me to drink a protein shake daily, start a new medication and return in three months. Hopefully this combo of losing more weight, the shakes, and the med will result in good improvement in January.

At lunch we discovered our TV channels weren’t coming up. The problem turned out to be a system-wide problem that the TV provider was having, rather than us, particularly. He didn’t know when it would be fixed, so we enjoyed a movie from our collection last night.

Stay safe and well.

Getting older is sometimes the pits. Right now my husband is finding more and more things he has trouble doing, and he’s getting down about it.

Yesterday we went grocery shopping. When we got everything put away, he suddenly decided he wanted to change out our mailbox decoration. We went to the shop, chose something (I can’t remember which one now) and drove back down to the mailbox at the bottom of the driveway. The one we had on there was large and heavy. We put it in the truck, attached the new one to the mailbox pole and came back up to store the one we had taken down. My husband had trouble lifting it up to hang on the hanger for it. He finally got it, but then said, as we walked back to the house, that we were going to have to quit displaying the larger decorations.

I again suggested that we construct another ‘holder’ for the decorations, one on the shop floor with slots for the decorations that we could slide in and out, rather than try to hang them from hooks overhead. He isn’t ready to consider that.

I’m trying to talk to him when he seems amenable, discussing ways I’M having to adapt how I do things because I’m not as strong as I used to be, or as agile, have as much stamina, etc., trying to help him accept that we have new limitations. Sometimes he seems to be listening and considering. Other times, he’s just as ornery as ever.

I hope it’s beautiful where you are and that you have a wonderful day.

Freedom is such a beautiful thing – to be cherished and celebrated every day. Today is Juneteenth, a celebration of the end of slavery in the U.S. The actual Federal holiday was declared in 2021.

My husband ordered this and it was delivered yesterday. He got it ready to put up and we got it up – all but the final wiring detail – yesterday. We finished it up this morning. It’s really bright neon. I think it looks great, and it’s the first thing he’s been really excited about in quite awhile. :0)

I’m going to try to get him to help me test and program our irrigation system this evening. I’ve been watering the tomatoes with a hose, and then taking watering cans around to the elephant ears, but we need to get serious now that the constant rains have stopped and the heat is pouring in.

I harvested a bunch of nice tomatoes yesterday. We’re now enjoying them for lunch AND dinner. They’re a bit difficult to eat because I tend to smile so much as I’m eating them. I love them so much! :0)

This is the planter in front of the garage. The elephant ear plant is doing really well so far.

This is the planter to one side of our front porch. I’m hoping that this plant gets really large, spilling out both sides of the planter.

I’m a bit worried about this one. This planter is on the east end of the house. It’s shaded, but we’ve had elephant ear plants here before and they did well. This one is really growing slowly.

Have a fun day!

We got up early (for us) this morning, did not pass “GO,” and went directly to the local clinic for me to get a follow up blood test to see if my new thyroid hormone dosage is correct now. (I had my thyroid radiated/killed several years ago due to Grave’s Disease, so my thyroid dosage is important, and the level was too low.) I’m actually hoping that my doctor will decide to raise the dosage again, based on my energy level and some other things. I should know in a couple of days.

We always reward ourselves after we have blood work done by enjoying a delicious breakfast at our favorite local restaurant, The Dari. I felt very pampered (and full!) when we finished. :0)

Dakota Storage Buildings

We’re home for the rest of the day. I’m going to try to get the weeds in my flower plants under control today. I’ll also check to see if we have any ripe tomatoes to harvest. Yesterday my husband fixed a break in a hose connected to our irrigation system. I’ll test the system to see if it’s working or needs more soon, since the daily rains SEEM to have stopped.

Ohio State News

We just had our quarterly pest spray on the 21st, but we had to catch a LIVE scorpion off the ceiling in our foyer last night. oooooh. I just called our company and asked what could be done. They are sending our guy out again for a respray at no charge on Friday afternoon. You can’t ask for better service than that.

I wish you a very enjoyable day.

In about half an hour, I’ll be leaving to get my hair cut. While I’m out, I’ll run several errands. When I get home, I’ll check for mail and see if the good trash people have emptied our can yet. If so, I’ll drag it up to where it lives before I drive up.

If I ‘hold-my-mouth-right,’ tomorrow MAY be the day we get our driveway repaired. So far it looks like Mother Nature is calm for today and tomorrow. We’re supposed to get rain much of the day Friday, so the guys may decide it’s better to do it next week, when it’s supposed to be dryer. I’m just happy that we are on the list to get the work done.

Yesterday I got out and watered our tomato plants and sprayed them with EIGHT for bugs. So far, I’m only seeing grasshoppers, but the worms are always hard to see and do their damage before you can blink an eye, so I’m trying to stay ahead of them.

I’m also planning to do a bit of weed whacking and spraying with KILLZALL to treat the non-mowable areas in the yard, as well as edges today.

I lost pound #28 this morning, so I’m feeling good about my efforts lately. May this continue!

Jet and Amber are still managing detente. Jet hisses when Amber gets too exuberant and I hold my breath, but so far, things are workable. My husband is still cooperating on trying to make sure Jet stays in the house until she really understands where ‘home’ is.

I hope that today is a nice one for you.

I just love this artist’s work. Just looking at one of these makes my spirits lift. They are so happy and full of the joy of living and appreciating.

After all the work on the cat tower, Jet has gotten on it a couple of times, but uses it mainly as a stepping stone to somewhere else. This morning she used it to get into a spot on a high shelf in the entertainment center. She spends more time on the hearth of the fireplace than most other places in the living room.

As you can see here, she likes being with her people in the office. She likes this corner of the countertop between our two computer areas.

This morning she started following me around, coming into the kitchen while I was washing my hair. This is not a good thing because the kitchen and dining area is where I can have Amber ‘in,’ but not able to get to Jet. I’m HOPING that Jet keeps her wits and nose about her, judging when Amber is in that area before squeezing under the dog gate…

It’s supposed to be quite rainy with severe weather today. I’m planning to scoot to the post office to get a package mailed early this morning before the bad weather hits. We have no errands to run that I know of, so we should be able to get home and pay attention to the skies the rest of the day.

I hope you are safe where you are today.

Today is a big day for us. I’m taking my husband for his first haircut in several weeks. Since he usually gets one every third week, he is really feeling ready to feel a bit more in control again. He continues to heal well, though his black and yellow bruising from his left shoulder down almost to his waist is still quite impressive. He is in MUCH less pain and is getting around by himself now.

Yesterday afternoon I did my yoga practice for the first time in quite awhile. Even though I was really stiff and sore, it felt good. Now that my husband is more steady, I’ll try to do this every day. It was fun to put a sparkly silver star on my desk calendar yesterday. :0)

I’m down 18 pounds from my worst now. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to concentrate on getting MYSELF under better control now that our crisis has passed. With our weather being super nice in the afternoons, maybe I can take advantage of the unusual February weather and start walking around in our yard, as well as the yoga stretching.

I hope you’re doing well today.

Good Morning!

cutigers-@cutigs1 on X

We are home from running errands, since we did NOT get the rain and snow showers that were forecast. We used the opportunity to get the mail, drag our trash can back up where it lives, buy $10 worth of lottery tickets (:0) and replenish our groceries. We’re about to eat some lunch.

We have discovered a wonderful thing at the grocery deli. They call them ‘bowls.’ There’s a mashed potato bowl and a mac and cheese bowl. Both are topped with chicken tenders and cheese. My husband prefers the mashed potatoes and I prefer the mac and cheese. We brought those home to enjoy.

The sun is shining right now, though there is still an impressive bank of clouds. I don’t who will be correct in the weather forecasting wars. I really hope my computer, which didn’t mention any precipitation at all, is the one who’s right.

I hope you’re having a wonderful day. I’ll write more later.

My guy, Huntley, won on The Voice!!!!โ€‚My personal favorite of his music so far is his blind audition, “She Talks to Angels.” I’m thrilled for him. I hope he has a long and happy career.

I’m going to hopefully deliver two gifts to friends today, catching up with how they’re doing for a few minutes. Life gets in the way of checking in and spending time the way I would like, so the times together are even more precious.

I was a good girl yesterday, doing the vacuuming and the laundry. Today I’m planning to continue trying to clean off my drafting table in my art room. Every time I even THINK about getting up there, something else comes up and snafus my efforts.

I hope you are feeling great, and have a productive, happy day today.

Digital Mom Blog

Today and tomorrow Arkansas is under ‘excessive heat warnings.’ This is serious business, as you can die from heat exhaustion or dehydration before you realize you’re anything but ‘really uncomfortable.’

Yesterday we had quite a storm after we got home from errands. Rain had spit on our windshield, but that was all while we were out. Once we got home, though, the sky turned dark, the wind came up – whipping the branches of our trees around – followed by thunder and lightning, and finally pretty heavy rain for half an hour or so.

Bonnie Plants

I’m planning to do some weeding in the middle planter of the planter trio today. I’ll do very short sessions, rest, and drink lots of water, then repeat. I would like to get that middle planter under control today.

We have no other errands, so I can concentrate on inside stuff otherwise today.

The Artful Parent

I got an idea of what I want to make for my friends for Christmas this year. I think I have everything I need already, so it’s just a question of starting one and seeing how it goes. I’ve been dreaming about it, so I’ll get up to the art room soon.

Have a good Wednesday!

I had a really busy day yesterday – errands in the morning and then working in the yard in the afternoon. With the mowing my husband did and the weed whacking I did, our yard looks very much like someone cares at the moment.

Buzzfeed.com

General Pump

We also finally moved the deck furniture from the back porch out to the deck yesterday. Next on that project will be power washing the deck furniture and then cleaning up the back porch, which is covered in dust, dirt, and pollen.

Corona

Also on the list is to carry the loppers in the truck and gradually try to cut the branches that are hanging down badly on both sides of the driveway, all the way up and down its 650+ foot length. It’s like an eerie tunnel now, and both my husband and I catch ourselves ‘ducking’ as a branch whips across the windshield. :0)

I find myself a bit at loose ends, now that American Idol and The Voice have both wrapped up. My guy, Iam Tongi, won American Idol and I was happy that Gina Miles won The Voice. It’s good that the exposure these talented young people get can propel them to great careers even if they aren’t ‘the winner.’ This is the first time I’ve ever gotten caught up in these two programs. It was nice, although it probably won’t happen again.

Today I’m planning to spread fertilizer on my raised square foot garden veggie planters and my tomato planters. We’re due for intermittent rain today and tomorrow, so I’ll try to make SURE I get outside this morning.

I hope that you’re having a nice morning and that your Wednesday will be an enjoyable one.
