WOW!

We just got back from errands.

I had to re-gather the trash that ‘somebody’ had strewn from our leaving our trash bags to be picked up yesterday. I guess the trash people are a day behind due to the 4th of July holiday. We carry an extra trash bag in the truck, and I used it to walk all up and down the ditch that runs in front of our property, picking up OUR trash, plus beer cans and other stuff some nice somebody threw out of their vehicle as they passed our place. Anyhow, we noticed that other people’s trash was still waiting, so I guess it will be picked up today. (Fingers crossed.)

On the way to the veterinarian’s office, a fire truck and an ambulance passed us going out east of town. When we got to the vet’s, I jumped out, thinking to make sure there were no animals in the waiting area before we tried to bring Amber in. The fire marshall drove up BESIDE us, lights flashing. He asked us to wait outside while he went in. The side door opened and the receptionist and another lady came out, with Amber’s shot in hand. She said she smelled smoke, and so had called the fire department. She apologized for us not being able to get Amber’s weight, gave her the shot, and told me she would email me the invoice. I wished her luck, and we got back in the truck and out of their way. I’ll call later to check that all is okay, but three fire trucks passed us with lights and sirens going toward the vet’s office as we went home. :0(

How the receptionist handled things this morning is only one of the reasons we will always go to Greenwood Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Singer is one of the kindest human beings on the planet. He has helped us with all of our dogs and cats, from first checkup to final goodbyes when needed. He actually cried with us once, telling us that our Molly was one of his favorites. We are so lucky to have people like this who are obviously following a calling, rather than merely doing a job.

So. After an unusual morning, we will soon fix lunch and get on with our day. Please keep the vet clinic in your thoughts – hoping the smelling of smoke was all there was and that they had no further problems.

Sad News

Molly

We took our sweet Molly to the vet’s office this morning for a sudden nasty place on the side of her mouth. I thought she had been bitten or stung. The vet called, telling me that it looked like cancer, wanting to know what we wanted him to do. We had an honest, blunt discussion. I finally asked him to look at the place carefully, decide if he thought she was ‘fixable,’ and to call us back.

He called back, saying he was 99% sure it was malignant cancer. She is 15 years old, mostly deaf and has cataracts, as well as cysts, lumps, warts all over now. I asked if he thought she might have any good, fun, doggy time left to enjoy. He said, “yes,”  with antibiotics and pain meds to get her back to the best place possible.

We picked her up about 3 pm this afternoon. She is agitating for food, but we can’t feed her until tomorrow morning. We will then add an antibiotic pill and a pain pill for the day.

We knew this was coming, but the suddenness of this is a shock. We will make sure that we make every day we have left count, giving her as much joy as we can in whatever time remains.

(She is resting comfortably at my feet as I type this.) We have been so lucky to share her life.

Trip to the Vet

This morning we took Abby and Molly to the vet’s office. Abby, the cat, needed two shots. Molly was scheduled for a grooming, plus she, too, needed annual shots. I called the office much later to see if Molly was ready to come home and was told the groomer was working on her and it would be about 45 minutes. We ate some lunch. At 2:58pm I was really sleepy. I told my husband that I would make our phone ring by getting comfortable and closing my eyes. I had nodded off when the phone rang at 3:03pm, 5 minutes after I shut my eyes, saying Molly was ready.

Sleek Molly

Here is Molly, sheared like a sheep and MUCH easier to scrub in the sink now when she sticks her nose in a hole or rolls in something awful outside. She has all her shots, a new “medal’ to wear for getting her rabies vaccination, and is already asleep in her bed by my feet as I type. :0)

Abby

Abby came home with us this morning. It took both my husband and me to get her into the carrier this morning. She meowed rhythmically all the way to the vet’s office. The techs took her into the other room, saying not to worry if she protested loudly. A minute or two later, the two astonished techs said she had had both her shots and didn’t make a sound! She disappeared after we let her out of the carrier. Imagine that!

Amber

When we went to pick up Molly, we decided to take Amber. She loves to ride in the car and doesn’t care where we go. When we got there, we had forgotten to bring the zapper that goes with her shock collar. We changed from the shock collar to the ‘no-pull’ collar we carry in the car, plus the leash. My husband brought Amber into the vet’s office to weigh her.

She was a perfect lady. She didn’t pull on the leash (remembering that she received a shock from the collar if she did). She came into the vet’s office calmly, instead of trying to pull my husband off his feet as she did three times last time we took her. He went right over to the scales with her. She got on and sat down. She weighs 93 pounds now. They came back into the waiting area. She sat when my husband told her to, waiting calmly as I handled the paperwork and payment for services rendered and they brought Molly out. She met our wonderful veterinarian with a nice lick on his hand. We told the vet about the no-pull collar. He and another customer there were both really interested and said they would look into it. Amber stood and came over to Molly, licked her, and then we left – just like normal people!

We gave both Amber and Molly a cookie when we got home. Neither could have been better. (Abby got her favorite cat treats this morning when she finally showed up later.) Smoke (our other cat) and the fish got nothing special because it was a normal day for them. (Better luck next time.)
