A Bit Nostalgic – 2 and 1

Wolfram-Fotodesign.bsky.social

Stephen Powers – @stephenpowersphoto.bsky.social

These photos of fall and winter make me a bit sad because I realize that I will never enjoy these sights in person again here in Thailand.

(1) Spring and Fall were my favorite seasons. I loved planting flowers and veggies every year in the spring. Fall in Arkansas wasn’t like the absolutely glorious images in Maine or surroundings, but I enjoyed the color we had, always trying to preserve leaves to use in art projects, my heart bursting from all the beautiful colors!

(2) Arkansas doesn’t ‘do’ winter well. We tended to have ice and then some snow. My favorite snows were ones with huge pretty flakes – that made you feel you were living in a snow globe someone had just shaken – that covered everything in fantasy, and then the sun came out and took it all away before I had to drive in it. We had a 650+ foot STEEP driveway on our 8 acres. Each year, no matter what we did, the trees on either side of our driveway would fall INTO the driveway, requiring us to use chainsaws to cut and haul our way down to the road. We had definitely gotten too old for this, but couldn’t afford (or find) someone to come do it for us.

In Thailand, depending on who you ask, we either have 3 or 4 summers that make up our year. We just finished “The Rainy Season” – June through October where it’s hot and rains almost every day, with huge hard rains and then remnants of typhoons coming our way from Vietnam – all of which caused my windows to leak.

“The Cool Season,” – from November until mid-February – it’s mid 80s for highs, 50 for a low, lots of sunshine and little rain. (Hooray!) “The Hot Season” is from March through May. Temperatures are above 95 degrees with scorching sunshine requiring umbrellas. Brian also adds “The Smoky Season” as a separate season, where it’s still really hot and farmers are burning off the residue in their fields making air purifiers mandatory. (Officially, this season is lumped in with “The Hot Season” for everyone except Brian).

No “Spring,” “Fall,” or “Winter” anymore. That makes me nostalgic.

What I’ve given up in seasons, though, I have more than gained in the delight of a new life here in Chiang Mai. I’m looking forward to buying some new clothes when I finally hit my weight goal (I’m about 9 pounds away now). I’m going to study up on the best clothes for a “mature woman” – who looks a bit like a Shar Pei now –

should wear in the year of summers I will learn to embrace now. My place is comfortable with lots of windows (some openable), a/c, fans, shades, air purifiers, and lots of water to drink. I carry an umbrella (for rain still now, but also for sun shade especially in the “Hot Season.”

I titled this post “A Bit Nostalgic – 2 and 1” because I’m nostalgic about the loss of fall and winter, but I just received something ELSE to remind me how very lucky I am to be here. My son just went to donate some clothes and texted me to unlock my door. He fought it open to bring me a doughnut! The first I have had in over 3 years. It was absolutely wonderful, but the best part was that he thought of me while doing other chores and brought me something he thought might ‘make me happy.’

Color me one happy, lucky mom.

I’m now starting a petition for this to be the end of winter and that spring should start tomorrow. As much as I love finding clever snow people and animals, I would like to move on to much better weather. Are you with me?

Seeing the creativity and sense of humor people show when building a snowman never fails to lift my spirits.

When we were dating a hundred years or so ago, my husband and I built snow people in my parents’ front yard. While I was rolling snow to create a head for mine, my husband was busily creating additions for both of them. I laughed my head off when our snow couple had suddenly sprouted anatomical parts… fortunately, my parents saw the humor.

Current Conditions in Greenwood AR

Pinterest

I finally got out and snapped some pics as I was letting Amber out. It’s a balmy 28 degrees now and quite sunny after ‘freezing fog’ warnings this morning.

This is a pretty snow. I really don’t like it when we’re snowed in, though. The main thing is worrying that someone will NEED to come up here in order to help us and they won’t be able to get up our driveway. OR that we NEED to go down, again because of emergency, and we can’t.

You can see Amber out sniffing around, trying to ascertain what’s happened since she was outside last. She only stays out about 5 minutes, taking care of business and wanting to come in where it’s warm and dry.

This is our deck, and the snow is melting here. That’s the only real place I can find any melting yet, though the temperature is forecast to go above freezing today. Fingers crossed.

I’ve decided to try to cheer myself up a bit over the next few (I HOPE!) snowed-in days by finding snow men and snow people creative people have made, and I’ll share them with you.

If you’re in a cold, snowy area today, stay warm and dry!

I think these are incredible photos. As I said before, I love to LOOK at snow scenes that make me appreciate the season and the work of Mother Nature, transforming our world into fantasy. Please, though, LOOKING is enough for me.

Spring ‘Done Sprung’ 3-5-2024

Yesterday, as we were trying to leave to take our cat, Abby, to the vet, our progress was impeded by a 3 foot (+-) black snake. My husband tried to nudge it on its way, but finally picked it up and tossed it out into the back yard. (One sign of spring I’m not particularly fond of.)

Our tulip tree, If you look carefully at the bottom center of this pic, you’ll see the recovering Amber keeping me company as I took pics this morning.

Redbud and forsythia

It really helps my mood to be able to invite Amber to join me and to walk around the yard a bit, seeing things coming to life, or in full celebration of the joy of the weather.

Well, it got above freezing. We drove the trash down to the place in the driveway where we have the trash can. I got out and started to roll the trash can down. I immediately started slipping badly. My husband drove on down to get the mail, then stopped to get out to help me, when he saw I was having trouble.

I waited, but he didn’t come. I kept creeping down, inches at a time with the trash can. I finally got down to the street and left the trash can. He had fallen and was trying to get into the truck. He made it back inside the truck just as I made my way over. His left foot had gone out from under him and he fell backwards, hitting his shoulder. He almost couldn’t get into the truck. He insisted he could drive, so we drove down to the church, turned around with lots of pain for his left shoulder, then made it back up the driveway and to the house.

I had him take some aspirin and got him settled in his chair with the heating pad wrapped all around it. I got him a drink. He’s watching TV and I just checked on him. He was holding the heat pad close to his shoulder. He says it feels a bit better.

We should have driven all the way down to the road, then he could have gotten the mail while I tried to walk up for the trash can. Shoulda – woulda – coulda. Now we’re supposed to get an ice storm starting tonight-into-tomorrow. We’ll just stay up here until further notice – until we can get wherever we need to go without getting out of the truck on ice, assuming we can get down the driveway in the first place.

Did I tell you I’m ready for spring?

Thawing a Bit

We’re finally getting a bit of thawing! The schools are still closed, showing our roads are still bad, but we have another good day where we’re above freezing before we have another round of colder tonight and more snow on Monday.

My husband actually drove down the driveway yesterday to get our mail. He said our Blizzaks (snow tires) worked well. I will wait until the driveway looks a bit less like a ski slope and the schools are open before I try it.

I pride myself on always showing up – usually a bit early – for appointments. Suffice to say I HATE not being able to get to ones I’ve scheduled because of the weather. I really don’t like to disrupt other people’s schedules because I can’t get down my own driveway – and up again. The fact that the local schools are still closed this time helps a bit.

I’m ready for spring.

Brrr!

USA Today

Isn’t this child the cutest thing? I melted when I found this picture.

It’s 32 here with snow showers forecast by the locals through 6pm this evening. There is frost on the ground, but the concrete and our driveway are clear at the moment.

We’ll be leaving in a bit to drive to Ft. Smith for our semi-annual dental cleaning. This is already a thing I dread, not even THINKING about the snow showers. Right now I’m TRYING not to freak out that my husband might insist on driving the Vette (rather than the truck with the snow tires.) I’ve stressed that the locals say the next wave of weather is supposed to happen while we are in Ft. Smith, maybe causing a bit of trouble for our way home, and then getting back up our driveway. Fingers crossed he’ll be reasonable.

It’s been a long time since I needed to worry about winter shoes. I have several pairs of boots, but they are mainly decorative, rather than for seriously cold or wet weather. I got a pair out this morning, put them on, and then started making our bed. I found a chunk of black ‘stuff’ on the carpet. Then I noticed my left boot seemed to be ‘sticking’ to the carpet as I moved. It turned out the whole sole of the left boot was crumbling! I’ve never had that happen before. There was nothing to do but throw out the boots and grab a second pair. I’m thankful I HAD a second pair! My husband insisted I also have a pair of Herman Survivors, and they are still in my closet. They weigh a TON, and make my ankles and legs hurt when I wear them. It would need to be so cold outside that no one in their right mind would GO out in order for me to wear them. The ones I have on are mainly ‘hiking’ boots, I guess, but they’re much lighter weight and have rubber soles for the wet. Even if we have to walk up the steep driveway (650+ feet) when we get home, I should be fine. I have a warm coat, hat, and gloves, as well.

I wish I looked HALF as cute in my gear as the child at the top of this post. :0)

New Prague Area Schools

My hair blows as time whizzes past this year. I had trouble believing it was already December – and now we’re almost to Christmas! The official 1st day of winter is here, and I’m not feeling prepared for THAT, either.

Arkansas doesn’t do ‘winter’ well. Instead of pretty flakes coming down and then melting off, we have ice storms and THEN snow on top of that, making tree branches and sometimes entire trees hang down into, or break off into, our 650+ foot STEEP driveway, trapping us until we can chainsaw our way out. We’re getting a bit long in the tooth to be trying to do this, but have little choice.

We’re trying to get back into the mindset of staying stocked up on everything, topping off the gas tank once a week, etc.

I really enjoy seeing PICTURES of snow, seeing children play and sled in the snow, the creative snow people and animals people create from the snow, and more – most from INSIDE, with maybe a quick walk in the snow fall, trying to catch flakes on my tongue before going back inside where it’s dry and warm.

I’m hoping Mother Nature will look kindly on us this winter, giving us some really pretty images without hazard.

“Many human beings say that they enjoy the winter, but what they really enjoy is feeling proof against it.” ~ Richard Adams
