Jesse Stone Series

Brass Baron Dorothy Bronze-outdoorartpros.com
Robert B. Parker – Penguin Random House

Robert B. Parker is one of my favorite authors. I think I have all of his books.

His “Jesse Stone” series is wonderful. I have the books AND the movies. (The fact that the main actor in the Jesse Stone series is ANOTHER favorite – Tom Selleck – lets me win twice. :0)

“In 1997 Robert Parker introduced the world to Jesse Stone, who comes to the small town of Paradise to serve as police chief, running from a past in Los Angeles where his alcoholism led to a failed marriage and a failed career in law enforcement.”

He’s a flawed man, but honest and strong and admirable. You want him to get through his problems.

I’m re-reading the books now, savoring the way Parker can say things in a very straightforward manner where you forget the ‘writing,’ concentrating on the characters and the story. He has quite a sense of humor, a dry wit, having his characters see the humor in a situation, providing sparkling dialogue that sometimes makes me laugh aloud.

Night Passage (1997) Trouble in Paradise (1998) Death in Paradise (2001) Stone Cold (2003) Sea Change (2006) High Profile (2007) Stranger in Paradise (2008) Night and Day (2009) Split Image (2010)

I will continue to buy and watch the Jesse Stone movies created by Tom Selleck and Michael Brandman, but I consider the ‘continuation of the book series’ by Ace Atkins or Reed Coleman a nice honor, but pale-in-comparison imitations of the master.

Luxury

HuffPostUK

I’m very lucky to be surrounded by books I want to read. I will never have enough time to spend with them. I’ve been bouncing back and forth from my computer to my recliner/book/throw/coffee lately, feeling very spoiled, indeed. I DO manage to get a few things checked off my to-do list each day, but a bit grudgingly. :0)

boredart.com

I found this recently and I WANT ONE! Such a clever idea. I’m trying to convince my husband to make us one. It makes me smile every time I see it. I’ll print the pic and keep moving it around under my husband’s nose. We might give him a hat to shield his eyes (and ours).

My husband and I both are voracious readers. He prefers his tablet, and I prefer real books. I really prefer hardback books, but have switched to paperbacks because of cost and storage space. There is something really satisfying to hold a book in your hands, turning pages, rather than swiping a screen. I do have a tablet, and take it when we go to sit in waiting rooms, but that’s the only time I use mine.

My favorite books are my art books. I have some that are how-to’s, trying to teach me watercolor techniques, for example, or how to draw feathers. (I haven’t mastered either of those things, but I LOVE to see what others have done and dream of one day getting closer to doing a bit of it myself.

I have a few books that are illustrated books – I guess for children – but they called to me. I love the creativity and the skill employed in these. They make the stories and characters come alive for children and adults, like me, alike.

My idea of a perfect ‘old-folks home’ is beds with large pillows in a library. Everyone would have headphones attached to their playlist of favorite music. Sweet animals of all kinds would visit the residents freely. Food and drink would be available, plus a playroom with art supplies. Residents who wanted to could help children find books that would delight them, or read to groups. Nice fantasy.

If You Want to Be…

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

I’ve always been thankful that my mom started teaching me to read when I announced, in the middle of our living room, looking around at my dad reading a book on Geology, my mom working the New York Times crossword puzzle, and my brother reading a comic book, “I wish to HELL I could read.”

Thankfully, she didn’t wash my mouth out with soap or punish me. She started to teach me so I could share in the love of reading – something I would love the rest of my life.

I became a teacher, then got my master’s degree as a reading specialist, taught in the public school system on the North side of town for eight years, then started my own reading clinic. I consider reading one of the greatest joys there is in this life. A way to broaden your horizons, learn new things as long as you would like, escape from problems or cares if you need to, or just be entertained. What a joy!

We have books in almost every room in our home. There are never too many books as far as I’m concerned. We donate some several times a year to our local library to help them with their fundraisers, always managing to bring home a sack from the sales.

I hope that you, too, are surrounded by books that stir your imagination.

Definition of Happiness

Cathy

I pre-ordered the paperback version of “Forgotten in Death,” the 53rd book in the Eve Dallas, “In Death Series” by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) a long time ago. It will be released the 28th of this month. The 54th book, “Abandoned in Death” will come out in hard back in February of 2022. I will pre-order the paperback of that one, as well.

As I always do, I’m enjoying re-reading the previous books in preparation for diving into the latest for me. I’m on book # 26 – “Memory in Death” now, fully immersed in Eve Dallas’ world, full of dead people that Eve stands for, determined to get justice for each one regardless of the cost to herself. The continuing love story of Eve and the billionaire Roarke is a classic for a reason. The characters are strong, real, quirky, and addicting.

Nora Roberts’ books have helped me through some difficult times. I love to dive into the situations she has created, get to know the characters, fully engrossed in the story.

I have several favorite authors, and my book collection is one of my most prized possessions.

I’m rich in books.

I’m enjoying the third book in the Chesapeake Bay Saga trilogy – plus one written later, probably due to reader demand – by Nora Roberts.

As usual, I’m in the middle of the world she has created there, feeling as if I would know all the characters if I saw them on the street, wanting to stay in their world.

Book Joy

NoelitoFlow-youtube.com

I have a wonderful library – actually books all over the house – into which I can dive and escape for awhile, books to inspire more art efforts, recipes, how-to books, and more. I am rich in books.

When I was a teacher in elementary school, teaching 1st grade through team-teaching 1-6 during the eight years I taught, I tried to teach the basics (phonics, breaking words into syllables, word meaning, etc.) but also I hope that I passed my intense love of reading into the hearts of my students. (I got in trouble by bringing my guitar to school and helping my kids learn phonics while singing and dancing to the beat. I was told, “Ms. Lewis. This is NOT a music class!”)

randolphrose.com

I can think of no skill more important than reading. There are no limits when one can read. You can learn new skills, explore things you may never see, widen your horizons, fill your soul.

When I ran my own reading clinic for three years – teaching kindergarten through adult in Tulsa, Oklahoma – I saw personalities and goals change. I loved watching the light bulb turn on when things finally made sense. We tested to find out what was needed and then supplied those needs with fun stuff, like comic books, to make the work worth the effort. It was wonderful to see kids realize that they weren’t ‘dumb,’ – they just didn’t have all the puzzle pieces!

I feel so lucky to have a stack of books on my desk here in the office, waiting for me to enjoy!

Book Joy

lektorat-ps.com

I finished re-reading the 51 previous paperback books in the “In Death” series by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) and am anxiously awaiting delivery of paperback #52 “Faithless in Death” I think on the 27th of this month.

In the meantime, I started Nora’s trilogy called “The Sign of Seven“, reading Book 1, “Blood Brothers” yesterday. I’ve now ordered Books 2 and 3, which should arrive shortly.

Being able to dive into a well-loved book, or start a new one, is such a quality of life thing for me. I honestly don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t read and write every day.

Joy in Books

frbronze.com

I pre-ordered the latest book from J.D. Robb’s (Nora Roberts’) In Death series out in paperback, “Faithless In Death” quite awhile back and it will be delivered sometime the last of July. In anticipation of this. I’ve been re-reading the series of what is now 54 books (the latest hardback will be out in Feb of 2022). I’m on #24, “Innocent in Death” now.

I have always enjoyed re-reading books I love or seeing favorite movies again. Each time I read or watch, I notice things I missed the first time, or have forgotten, so the joy in discovery, or seeing good literary or cinematic friends again is renewed.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas’ world (NYC in the future – around 2058+) grabs me. She is a top murder cop there, and is SUCH an interesting blend of competence, grit, strength and vulnerability. I also love her sarcasm. The interplay between Eve, Roarke, her friends and co-workers still makes me laugh aloud or tear up.

I will enjoy being in her world, finishing the last book (#51) again before the latest paperback arrives. #53 is pre-ordered, and I have notes to check on when the paperback for #54 will be available.

I am a spoiled, lucky lady. :0)

Another Good Series

Furmen-Szilajka Erzsebet-kavicskep-kavicskepek.com

I absolutely LOVE the way that Szilajka Erzsebet uses mixed media for her stone ‘stories.’ Not only does she show great creativity and skill in telling a story with her stone arrangements, making me react emotionally to each one, but she also makes them look beautiful with the background painting. she has also used cardboard (I think) for the books here. I just can’t say enough about her artistry and talent. I love this one, that I call, “The Reading Tree.”

I am in the middle of a new series by Nora Roberts. called, “Chronicles of the One.” It starts with “Year One.” I’m in the middle of the 2nd book in the series, “Blood and Bone.” I have purchased the third book, “Rise of the Magicks.”

As with all of Nora Roberts’ books, I’m having trouble putting her work down and getting anything else done. :0) I love her strong female characters. She surrounds them with ‘real’ people you want to know. She has created a rich world, ripe with challenges, making you root for her success.

Never Too Many Books

Kansas City Public Library

I wish I loved close to this so that I could support the people who designed it. It makes me smile right down to my toes. Who could resist spending time in here?

I have been enjoying the work of several of my favorite authors the past few months. I re-read all of my Nora Roberts collection, including those written as J.D. Robb. Then I re-read my Robert B. Parker books, enjoying his Spenser series, Jesse Stone series, Sunny Randall series, the Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch books, and his stand alone books. Right now I’m reading a new-to-me Nora Roberts book I missed somehow, and have a new book by John Grisham that my husband recommended waiting.

I feel so lucky to be able to escape from any worries I have by diving into a well-loved book or a new one by an author I like. What a luxury!

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Chalres W Eliot – SayingImages.com

I have been an avid reader since I was about 5 years old. My mom started teaching me when I was very young. I had looked around my living room, seeing my dad engrossed in a large book about geology, my mom doing the NY Times Sunday Crossword puzzle, and my brother sitting on the couch devouring a comic book. I got more and more frustrated, finally announcing in a loud voice, “I wish to HELL I could read!” After the shocked and appalled silence, my mom joined me on the floor and began to teach me.

The gift she gave me has only grown. The only time I lost my love for reading was when I was in graduate school, working on my Master’s Degree as a reading specialist. I wanted to share my love for reading and learning, but it’s amazing that anyone could come through that program and still love to read. I studied so hard and long, taking one class each semester and three each summer while teaching full time. I found I had lost the ability to read for pleasure, tensely reading – taking mental notes – as though I would be tested on the material when I finished. After a year or so, I finally gave myself permission to just enjoy – and my love for reading returned.

I finished re-reading the “Spenser” series by Robert B. Parker a couple of days ago. I was a bit sad to finish the last one. The writers who have tried to emulate him and extend the series just don’t capture the flavor for me.

Now I’m re-reading his “Jesse Stone” series. I love the character created here, and it was only enhanced when Tom Selleck was chosen to be Jesse Stone in the movie versions.

I hope a LOT of people are enjoying the work of their favorite authors, plus finding new ones, to help them through these challenging times.

Thoughts on a Sunday 3-7-2021

Lowe’s

We spent from before lunch until 6:30 in the evening, but we got the new garage door opener installed and running yesterday. I am definitely coming back ( in my next life) as a combination weight lifter and basketball player who majored in fixing things.

The main thing that strikes me about the new opener is how QUIET it is compared to the one we replaced. I’m also very grateful we don’t have to manually haul the door up and carefully let it down now. A device that does that at a touch of a button is definitely a good thing. :0) It would be very nice if our garage were as clean as the one shown in the nice image above. No such luck.

We are resting today, still pretty whipped out with all the labor yesterday. The weather is gorgeous with reasonable temperatures and lots of sunshine. I will try to at least walk around the yard awhile before the afternoon is over, just to smile at the sun a bit, if nothing else.

I’m enjoying book # 29 “Widows Walk” by Robert B. Parker. I think there are 40 in the Spenser series, and I am truly enjoying revisiting his wit, sense of humor, wonderfully drawn characters, and clean writing.

I have spaghetti sauce in the slow cooker for dinner tonight. Nice Sunday.

I hope that YOUR Sunday is a good one, too.

The Joy of Reading Robert B. Parker

Robert B. Parker

My husband recommended the Robert B Parker books to me years ago. I think I have all he wrote by himself. He wrote a couple with his wife, Joan, and others are trying to add to his legacy, but I have collected only his.

I’m enjoying re-reading my collection. I started with his “Spenser” series on which “Spenser for Hire,” the TV series, was based. I’m reading #24 “Small Vices.” My husband can always tell I’m reading a Parker book because I tend to snort or laugh out loud at his dry sense of humor. His love for sarcasm is right down my alley. He uses no filters – just comes out with the stuff you wish you had the courage to say, but don’t.

I find his Spenser character fascinating because he is so self-contained, doggedly hard-working, determined to get the answers he wants, and has the will to do what he thinks is right, regardless of the consequences. His deep love for Susan melts me into a puddle. It is all pervasive and has no limit. It’s forever – and joyfully. Who could resist that?

There are only 40 in the series by Parker. I’m reveling in the world he created.

Robert B. Parker – Spenser Series

Robert B. Parker

“Parker began writing his Spenser novels in 1971 while teaching at Boston’s Northeastern University. Little did he suspect then that his witty, literate prose and psychological insights would make him keeper-of-the-flame of America’s rich tradition of detective fiction. Parker’s fictional Spenser inspired the ABC-TV series Spenser: For Hire.”

I’m enjoying re-reading my collection now. I think there are 40 Spenser books. Ace Atkins is continuing the series, but they seem a pale shadow to me.

It’s been awhile since I re-read the series. I’m snorting at his wonderful sense of humor, his beautiful sarcasm, his honesty and straightforward writing, his great description. Spenser is a complicated character. I find him fascinating.

If you have not discovered this amazing writer, you’re in for a priceless experience.

Lucky

Paul Sweeney – SayingImages.com

I am in the middle of a re-read of book # 47 (of 51) of the J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) In Death series before diving into the newest one to come out in paperback.

I’m lucky because reading is such a large part of my life.

My parents started teaching me to read when I was very young, exasperated that my mom, dad, and brother were all engrossed in a book, a crossword puzzle, and a comic book while I sat in the middle of the living room bored out of my mind. I looked from one to the other and finally said, in a loud voice, “I wish to HELL I could read!” Instead of beating my rear for the language, my mom got one of my books, sat on the floor with me, and began to change my life.

I became a teacher, earning my Master’s Degree as a Reading Specialist, using my guitar to help my sweet students learn phonics so that they had the tools to sound out unfamiliar words on their own. (That, and other things the public school frowned on, led me to start my own reading clinic, teaching students from kindergarten to adults who needed missing parts filled in so they understood what they needed to do to make sense of things.) We never actually made a profit, so I had to move on after 3-1/2 years to make money to help support our family.

After going through the school system myself, and then, particularly while earning my Masters while working full time, I lost my love for reading. I would find myself reading the newspaper, a magazine, or a paperback book as if I would be tested on it when I finished, the tension gathering in my neck and shoulders. It took me awhile, but finally I was able to relax again and simply dive in to learn something new, share someone else’s experience, or just dream.

Now I can’t imagine trying to live without reading. I find it difficult to name something else that changed my life for the better as much. It has saved my sanity – I THINK :0).

I am lucky to have several authors that I consider so wonderful I want to enter the worlds they have created over and over. Each time I do that, I find something I missed or have forgotten that enriches me, deepens my appreciation or understanding, fills my heart again.

I hope that you, too, are surrounded by people who share their expertise and creativity with you through their writing.

Good Company

The latest paperback in the In Death series by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) comes out in about a week. I pre-ordered it months ago and am eagerly awaiting it.

I decided late last month to re-read the previous books in preparation for receiving and enjoying the newest one. There are now 51 books in the series. I’m reading # 20 now. I remember the situations, but not the details, so it’s almost as if I’m enjoying them for the first time – except for getting to spend time with the characters who have become old friends again.

I have read for pleasure for as long as I can remember. There was a brief period when I lost that ability. I was finishing my Master’s Degree as a reading specialist. I picked up a best seller and discovered that I had tensed up, reading it as if I would be tested on it when I finished. It took me a year or two to finally get over all the garbage I was forced to read and regurgitate that would supposedly help me be a better teacher. I’m glad I only lost a couple of years. :0)

Just as an aside – I realized that the best thing I could pass on to my students was the joy of reading, whether it was to spend some fun time with interesting stories and characters, to learn new skills, to vicariously travel to wonderful places, the satisfying of curiosity, and more. Reading is contagious. It grabs you body and soul – hopefully to hold you in its arms forever.

Stupidity

I love this. :0)

Reading Books via Stephanie Youmans Wilson

I’m doing my part in trying combat my OWN stupidity by reading almost a book a day, rereading my collection of In Death books by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) before I receive the newest addition in paperback at the end of this month, # 51 Shadows in Death.

I’m on book # 16 right now, enjoying Eve Dallas’ world in the future of trying to put the bad guys away. Her world is gritty, and parts of it are heart-wrenching, but her incredible strength, determination, and courage bring her through. I also feel I know all the people around her.

This is probably a flaw in me, but one I enjoy – that I can reread and gather details I don’t remember. I remember the main thrust of each book, but I notice things I may have skipped over, or not appreciated as much as I would like, before. I do the same things with favorite movies. :0)

My book collection has helped me weather the pandemic, feeling as if I’ve visited old friends. I’m making myself go through my collection, culling out books I probably won’t read again. I’m listing them on Amazon for resale, and we go to the post office almost every day to mail a sale to a person I hope will enjoy the book. I’m down to a small shelf of books to sell now, so very soon I’ll make myself tackle another area of books in the house.

I hope that you are enjoying favorite books as we continue to try to stay safe and well.

The Love of Books

ThoughtCo

I’m enjoying re-rereading part of my collection of Nora Roberts books lately. Happily, I have a good number of them. Diving into them is a wonderful escape from the challenges of our world, personal problems, or just to revisit a wonderful experience, learn something new, relax.

I am going through my books once again, culling out those that I probably won’t read again. I will sell some of them and donate the rest to our public library which usually has fundraisers a couple of times each year.

Since I am definitely not Suzy Homemaker, I have gotten on some old clothes, have dust rags and damp cloths ready to clean up my shelves as I gather books to get rid of and attempt to reorganize my collection.

It seems I am ruthless each time I do this, but I have to admit there are books that will be someone else’s choice on ‘redistribution’ after I am gone.

I’m so lucky to be rich in books! :0)

I’m feeling rich because I have a nice stack of books to read.

I just finished John Grisham’s The Guardians and have started an old favorite of Nora Robert’s.

Being able to ‘climb’ onto my new recliner (I mentioned that I’m a bit height-challenged) cover up with my cozy throw – cup of coffee beside me and a book in my hand – is one of the nicest ways I know to spend some time each day.

Whether I’m reading to learn something, or escaping into another world for awhile, reading is priceless. My favorite authors list continues to grow because thankfully there are numerous talented people out there either explaining how to do what they do so well, or transporting me to a place I can worry about someone else’s problems or share their joy.

I started learning to read very early, after shocking my parents with a bad word when I looked around our living room one day. My mom was working the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. My dad was immersed in a gorgeous geology book. My brother was sprawled on the couch with a comic book (now called a graphic novel). I looked in frustration from one to the other, finally announcing, “I wish to HELL I could read!” Everyone looked at me. My brother smirked because he knew I was in trouble. My dad was just staring at me. My mom, who had a small dog on each side of her in her chair, put down her puzzle and came over to me.

Instead of being angry, she grabbed a book, sat down beside me, and proceeded to start teaching me to make sense of the marks in the book. It was one of the very best gifts anyone ever gave me.

I finished the 11th book in “The Rise of the Iliri” series by Auryn Hadley last night.

My main reaction is sadness that it is, indeed, the end of the series. There won’t be any more in this story. I was totally caught up in the world Auryn created, plus the unique characters and their interactions. I love the fact that the main character was a super strong female. Her world was SO different from mine it was a good escape. I’m a go-along to get-along type basically, trying to not upset anyone. The main character, Sal, was the complete opposite, challenging everyone and everything in order to make the world a better place. She was a shining example to everyone around her, bringing out their strengths, as well. Great story.

In the meantime, my husband suggested I read the “Honor Harrington” books by David Weber next. Another strong female character. I started the first book in the series last night.

I hope that YOU have the luxury of diving into the beloved books of a favorite author, or finding new, exciting ones that take your breath away.

I have a Kindle Fire.  I have been enjoying reading “The Rise of the Iliri” series by Auryn Hadley on it.

I really prefer holding a real book in my hands. My FAVORITE is a full-sized hard back book, but we converted to paperbacks years ago, due to space and cost.

I love the FEEL of books. I hold a treasure in my hands. I love to save my favorites to read again. (I realize that this is possible on my Kindle, but – to be honest – I don’t really trust it to not lose its mind, and I don’t like the idea of the cloud holding things I care about.

So, again, I guess I’m a dinosaur, treasuring an idea that is ‘going out of style.’

Getting rid of my collection will one day be someone else’s problem…

I am enjoying Book # 5 of the Rise of the Iliri Series by Auryn Hadley.  It is called, “Tenacity.”

It is fascinating.  Sal is the strong female character who lives in a world that is compelling. Auryn Hadley creates unforgettable characters living in a world you learn to think of as almost normal, although it is about as far from our real world as possible.  I think there are 9 books in the series so far. Wonderful escape reading that makes you think.

I received paperback book #50 in the “In Death Series” by J.D. Robb (pen name of Nora Roberts) yesterday. I am re-reading book #48 right now.  I love it when I can dive into a book and leave my concerns behind for awhile.  I won the lottery when I found Nora Roberts. She has given me hours of pleasure and escape over the years. I hope she has made a gazillion dollars and lives to be at least 200, writing steadily to feed my hunger for more great characters and stories.

I’m thoroughly enjoying re-reading J.D. Robb’s (Nora Roberts’) “In Death” series with the main character Eve Dallas, a homicide lieutenant in New York City in the future.  I’m currently re-reading #38 (out of 49), and am looking forward to the newest one in paperback – #50 – which is due to be delivered on July 28th, and #51, which will be delivered the end of December.  I feel rich when I have stacks of wonderful books I can dive into!

I ordered the newest “In Death” series book by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) to come out in paperback a few months back. It is supposed to arrive sometime this month.

I am in the process of living in Eve Dallas’ world again, re-reading the 49 books that precede the newest one for me. I am on # 36.

The world that J.D. (Nora) has created is gritty. It’s New York City way into the future. The characters are real, vivid, and extremely appealing to me. I feel as if I am ‘home,’ among friends while I’m immersed in her world.

What a joy it is to read for pleasure, finding truly wonderful authors who create worlds that allow you to escape – among friends.

I am re-reading book # 28 in the “In Death” series by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts), “Promises in Death.” This is book 28 of the 51 in the series now. Book 50 comes out in paperback in July. I have ordered it, and am re-reading all the ones that come before before I allow myself to enjoy the newest one, “Golden in Death.” #51 comes out in paperback at the end of December. “Shadows in Death.”

This quote is certainly true for me.  I can’t read just one.

When the world around you is not only challenging, but also scary. the ability to dive into books with characters you love, escaping from all else, is priceless.

Escape – Plus

Elisabet Scott via NUSTBookClub.wordpress.com

I have always been a voracious reader. I am ALWAYS reading at least one book at any given time.  I cannot imagine a life without being surrounded by lots and lots of books.

Lately, I’ve been re-reading some of my favorite Nora Roberts books. I work hard all day, doing chores and working in the yard more and more as the weather permits, and then spend some glorious time escaping into a well-loved book – like a pair of comfortable shoes – knowing it will turn out right in the end, loving the wonderful characters and their the conversations that touch my heart or make me laugh.

I’m also enjoying some of my art books. The talent of people will never cease to amaze me. I love to try to emulate the techniques they are trying to teach me.  They put wonderful ideas in my head that I can try out in my art room – if I can make the time and still have energy. I so much enjoy pouring over the possibilities in these books!

I’m also trying out new recipes. I’m not imaginative on my own, so I’m delighted when I can find recipes that my husband says are, “YUMMY!” or requests that we have again. Today I will bake another loaf of keto bread for myself. My husband enjoys all kinds of regular bread, but I’m trying to get the lard off, so keto bread means a lot to me.

I am lucky to have more books than I can enjoy. They make me feel rich!
