Home Security System

As I type, we’re making the final arrangements for an ADT Security System for our home. We called when we got an ad offering a promo and arranged for the installation man to come today.

So far, I’m impressed with the installation guy. We went over all the doors and windows before he started, and we had several questions. When we were in agreement about these, we discovered that because we didn’t have prewired doors and windows, we had to go for Option 2.  This means that instead of being able to use the standard system out of the box, we get credit toward the purchase of the equipment we need. After a lot of talk (questions/explanations) a major consideration is whether our Internet system will qualify for the lower monthly charge, or we have to ‘upgrade’ to the use of a sim card in the control box at a higher monthly charge.

This is not a typical bait and switch thing, or if it is, it’s extremely well done. The communication between the ADT people and our system is cut and dried. If it works, we get the lower price each month. If it doesn’t we choose whether to pay the higher monthly fee or blow off the whole thing.

We ARE considering some add-on equipment, since we have more doors and windows than they were covering, have two stories, and I like the idea of the personal emergency thingie I can wear around my neck in case I fall on my head unexpectedly. Even though I’m not alone, our house absorbs sound really well. I have been in the position of trying to yell for my husband’s help and he doesn’t hear me.

So – as soon as the test results are in, we’ll make the decision as to whether we put the system in or not.

Okay. It’s quite a while later. The ADT system couldn’t communicate with our CenturyLink modem, so the lower monthly price is off the table. My husband said no to the higher monthly price with a contract for 3 years. The installation guy is trying a last-ditch effort to get the price of the equipment down enough to mostly offset the higher monthly price. If he can do that, maybe my husband will go for it. Fingers crossed.

It is again later in this saga of home security system. We have made a deal and he is installing the parts now. I’ll update this a bit later, as I need to be available for him.

There is a keypad that’s the main part of the system. We’ll have an extra keypad for the second floor, a motion sensor, a detection sensor on every door and every window, 2 keychain remotes, and a personal emergency pendant I’ll wear. On the keypads there are panic buttons for police, fire, and emergency.

Important considerations for us are that our system can be active and we can open our bedroom window to use the attic fan when the weather allows. We can also let our doggies in and out without triggering anything.

I can’t say enough about the installation guy. His name is Roderick McCray. He is knowledgeable, pleasant, put up with Amber, and worked with us to make our home security happen. He started his day by driving to us from Little Rock – a 2-1/2 hour drive. He’s been here since before 11:00 this morning, jumping through countless hoops to make this day good for both of us. He faces the drive home once the system is finally in. He has taken no breaks.

I will feel safer knowing there is someone on the other end of this system that may be able to help us in case of emergency.

Brunch Bunch

Eleanor Roosevelt – SayingImages.com

Every Friday my husband and I meet our good friends to share a meal and catch up. I used to call it “Lunch Bunch,” but I’ve dubbed it “Brunch Bunch” now because we meet at about 10:45 a.m. – lunch to them and breakfast or brunch to us and it’s easier to stay good with our Nutrisystem plan by calling it a FLEX BREAKFAST.

We have met most every Friday for years. We share what’s happening to us, good and bad. At some point we’ll probably have to change the same of our meeting to “Geezers’ Group because we’re all getting long in the tooth. There’s a lot of fight in us yet, though, and I’ve come to treasure our special time on Fridays.

My husband and I feel so complete up on the top of our ridge line, with our lifestyle of projects – separate and together – it would be easy for the days to pass without our seeing many people. I’m especially glad to have met these two wonderful ladies and shared so much of our lives. Our group is sometimes larger, with other friends and family joining us when they can. Sometimes we meet with just one other, and it’s a special time then, too.

Two Happy Ways to Start a Day

tau0.wordpress.com

We woke up with the red light flashing on our weather alert, telling us we were under a thunderstorm warning. Instead of having anything scary, we just had a nice, but short, soaky rain.  Our doggies cavorted around, clearly enjoying the rain. The rain stopped fairly quickly, and we are able to enjoy windows and doors open to a nice, cool breeze!

AND, while we were eating breakfast, a hummingbird came to drink from one of our feeders. Just as we were enjoying watching, ANOTHER hummingbird came swooping by! This has been a slow hummingbird season for us so far, so we were really delighted to see TWO at once. It also gives me the motivation to thoroughly clean out the hummingbird birdbath my husband and I built.

Pics later….

Fingers Crossed!

123RF.com

123RF.com

We have our fingers crossed that we can get a used riding lawn mower we found on Craig’s List this week.

We’re getting a little bit ‘long in the tooth’ in our family. We have plenty of opportunities for exercise with our square foot garden and flower beds without having to play ‘crack the whip’ with the self-propelled mower we have now. I usually have my husband do the edges of the yard, then do several rounds of mowing, having to plan WAAAAY ahead not to be ruthlessly whipped about before I can hand the reins back to him.  The mower is really too much for me, but I don’t want him out fighting with the yard by himself. Our quality of life would be much improved if we could ride while mowing.

The picture below gives you an idea of what we’re trying to get for about half the price we would have to pay for a new one. We’re going to meet the seller in Fort Smith this afternoon. Wish us luck!

Magnolia Pearl Friendship Post via Zen to Zany

G. Henrichs via Magnolia Pearl Friendship Post via Zen to Zany

I’ve always found this to be true, whether it’s meeting strangers for the first time or getting to know relatives. Sometimes you almost don’t need to talk at all to recognize a special someone with whom you instantly ‘click.’ You feel you know them far better than you actually do, as far as details of their lives, but the heart of the friendship is feelings, basic reactions to life, maybe shared kinds of experiences.

I’m lucky to have both strangers who have become instant friends and relatives, as well. It’s such a comfort to meet someone of like mind. You don’t have to see them often or even communicate on a regular basis to feel close. And when you CAN be close, it’s as if you haven’t been apart at all. You don’t need to ‘catch up,’ although you do, and you care about all the details of what has happened, but the basic closeness never changes.

If you’re lucky enough to recognize this feeling, you’re rich. Nourish these special people, as they are definitely what makes our lives joyful.

Permanent Vacation

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

Sometimes I feel so lucky it scares me. My husband reacts the same way – waiting for the other shoe to drop. I have a more optimistic outlook, but really have to stop and say, “WOW!” every once in awhile.

We worked all of our adult lives. Many times this resulted in having to live in two different places, meeting when we could. A lot of time was spent on the phone, trying to hold each other close.  The years passed and finally we were both working from home. I was doing medical transcription and my husband was a computer analyst, working for different companies through a man we knew in Vermont. We thought that was the best that could ever be.  My husband received less work, due to changes in the economy. He finally decided he would retire. I continued to work for a couple more years. Changes were made in the surgery department for which I worked, and I decided to retire, as well.

Since then, our lives continue to change for the better. We’re so busy now we honestly can’t figure out how we ever had time to work! Of course we have our have-to’s, and stuff we would rather not be saddled with, but – for the most part – we design our days around our errands.

Who knew that one of our favorite things would be to create metal yard critters and learn to make metal decorations for our mailbox together? Instead of having ‘heated discussions” about bills, problems, etc., WE have heated discussions when I don’t want to create something I consider in bad taste, or we can’t agree what colors to paint our newest creation. Right now, for example, we’re trying to come to a decision about how to paint our 1000 gallon propane tank…

I’ve spent almost 15 years now running Creative Artworks!  When I started it, I displayed only my own art work. My son and I figured out that I could add the work of other artists at no higher cost to me, other than the time and labor of adding their work and handling the business details. This was life-changing for me. I’ve never enjoyed anything more. I’ve met some really talented people, some who have become real friends, through doing something I love.

About 7 years ago I started a blog. I loved the idea of being able to show people what we offered on Creative Artworks. I also found funny or touching pictures I wanted to share. Artwork outside my website made my mouth water. The world is full of such amazing people. I’m proud to be on the same planet. I changed from Blogspot to WordPress about 6 years ago and have expanded what I’m doing with it. Instead of trying to come up with things to say or show you, I have to remember that I might be aggravating people by writing too much! I hope that people read my stuff when they have the time and the inclination, feeling free to delete it if they’re not in the mood, too busy, etc.

I had a setback lately when I reached the limit on the free part of WordPress. Due to a lack of communication, I discovered that by deleting images as they required, I had killed the links in my posts! The images weren’t retrievable. I’m now paying for unlimited space after having to delete 6 years worth of ‘stuff,’ – starting over.  When I considered just closing the blog down, it was really clear how much I love doing this. I discovered that it is a quality of life thing for me.

I also have a chance to try to grow some of our own food. I absolutely love having built a square foot garden with my husband. For several years now, I’ve been learning more about what NOT to do again, but I’m having a blast. Now we’re converting from the square foot garden to a RAISED BED square foot garden, and I’ll be trying it out for the first time this fall, depending on what plants I can find.

I have an art room that – even though it usually looks as if a bomb has exploded in there – is a haven. I can shut the door and immerse myself in wonderful art supplies and pictures that get my juices going. Right now I’m trying to make the time and energy to try to create some designs with buttons on tee shirts, and cut out a design on a gourd…

I’m one of the luckiest people on the planet. Although we’re fine, my husband would like for me to win the Powerball lottery or the Publishers Clearinghouse drawing. He has many plans to which he adds without limit if suddenly we had all the money in the world…

My health is better than it’s been in a long time. I have my husband, my son, two dogs, two cats, and a whole lot of happiness on my “permanent vacation.”

Greenhouse Envy

taylorsgreenhouse

Our good friends are in the middle of a huge project to build a two-story greenhouse on the back of their house!  This will have to move slowly – both for the size of the project and the horribly hot weather we’re having now, but it’s happening!  This picture shows you the beautiful arches they’re attaching to the concrete. Attachment rods were sunk into the concrete to make this really secure. I don’t know all the details of what they’re doing, but I’m green with envy. I really don’t know of anyone who deserves a beautiful greenhouse more than my friend.

Here you can see more of the back of their house and how the greenhouse will fit in. I’ll try to get more pics as the project moves on. I’m so excited for them!
