Good morning! It rained overnight here. It’s still wet, cool (63 degrees F.), and quite foggy right now. I’m really enjoying the change.

I’m happy to be enjoying lots of time in my art room. The ornaments I’m working on require lots of steps with drying time in-between, so I dash up there, do the next step, then come down again to do something else until things are ready for me again. I’m going up and down several times a day – a good thing for my ‘moving more’ goal. :0)

I should have ornaments to show you soon, and the ideas for more wood-burned and/or painted earrings are flying around in my head, as well as some ideas for another wood-burned sign. It’s so much fun!

City of the Colony TX – Cardio Drumming Warm-Up

My SIL told me about a class she attends at the retirement community where she lives now. She suggested I look up, “Cardio Drumming – TC Seniors” to give me an idea of what her class was doing. I was intrigued, and decided that I would try to follow along with the first video, but using my weights instead of the drumsticks the ladies are using. It’s all a part of looking for fun ways to move more and should be fun – at least once – as long as they don’t get too rambunctious…

We’ll go down and get our mail and see if our trash can is full of water from the rain. We need to drag it back up to its spot beside the driveway. No other errands I know of. We may get the Kohler toilet innards delivered today. If so, we’ll tackle putting the new kit in today.

Enjoy your day!

While working at the computer the other day, I started to drink some coffee and found my cup was empty. I took my cup and went to the kitchen. I stopped to pee, then went on to the kitchen. Went back to retrieve my cup from the counter in the bathroom.

Noticed a bunch of dog hair on the floor (imagine that!) and grabbed my battery-powered portable vacuum to get that up. I emptied out the canister and returned the unit to the wall-mounted battery charger thingie. I went back to the office and sat down. Realized I hadn’t gotten my coffee, so went back to the kitchen.

I got out chili mac leftovers for dinner and put out plates and spoons for our lunch. I felt hungry as I hadn’t had anything for breakfast yet, so got out a banana, peeled it, put it on a plate and brought it back to the office. Sat down and figured out I still hadn’t gotten my coffee.

Went back to the kitchen, got my cup, filled it, and put it in the microwave to heat it up. Let Abby, our cat, out. Checked to make sure the dishwasher had been emptied, and put the few things on the counter inside, wiped the counter. Went back to the office.

Went back to the kitchen to retrieve my coffee from the microwave and brought it back to the office. When I decided I was going to try to “move more,” this really wasn’t what I had in mind…

I’m still doing my old lady yoga stretching, but I’m finding it harder to do my elliptical trainer now. It is in the garage, the only place with a hard, bare floor. It’s 38 degrees F. outside right now. I’m TRYING to do my elliptical in the afternoon, when it warms up a bit, but am not having much luck convincing myself yet. I’ll keep trying.

Right now my ‘moving more’ efforts are concentrated on cleaning up planters in the yard before winter settles in. I’m going to try to do one planter each day. (We have 14 brick planters around the yard, plus pots on the deck.) Once these are done, “I’ll get more serious about the ellipitical,” – (she said…. :0))

My sister-in-law, Mary Lou, and I are trying to take care of ourselves. While I’m doing yoga, the elliptical trainer, and 5 lb. weight strength exercises; Mary Lou is walking at the “J”, walking her dogs, doing aerobic exercises in the pool at the “J”, and other things. She recently got a new FitBit type wristband that does everything but cook, giving her the number of steps she’s walked, her heart rate, blood pressure, calories, and probably where she left her keys. I’m very envious, both about her new fancy goodie – bringing lots of motivation, plus her efforts on walking. Her highest reading lately was 13,500!

I’ve done a lot (for me) today, working in the garden, then spreading Weed & Feed on the lawn, then fertilizer in the flower beds, then cooking and laundry, and my simplistic pedometer says, 2922 at the moment. UGH.  I still have puddings to make and dinner to figure out, plus laundry to put away, so I probably won’t get to my elliptical today.

Maybe tomorrow….

Move it!

Yesterday I did pretty well on getting my body moving.  I started with 15 minutes on the elliptical trainer in the garage. (I took it easy because I had sore muscles from helping my husband put up another raised bed planter in the garden the day before. ) This low impact exercise is good for me because it’s easy on my joints and encourages range of motion.

I had my first session with my exercise ball. It was pretty pathetic. I kept trying – but failed – to quit picturing myself trying to use this new tool. I had as much or more trouble getting ON the ball in the right position without falling off as I did trying to do whatever the exercise was. I wallowed a lot, but persevered.  The biggest problem was when my husband came in, took one look at me and laughed. (GRRRR!) I then offered to share my workout with him and he left. :0)

I have a few sore muscles this morning, having used different ones that I apparently do doing ANYTHING else. I figure, though, that my TRYING to do each of the exercises will result – eventually – in improvement. To say I have a long way to go is a vast understatement, but I AM moving.

The combination of the elliptical and the exercise ball seems to be a good one. I’ll try to do this a couple of times per week. The alternate days I’ll try to concentrate on my strength exercises with weights and stretching.

I’m trying to take breaks from whatever else I’m doing and MOVE – either exercising or walking out to the garden, or….

Wish me luck. I’m lucky enough to continue to get older each day so far. I’d LIKE to think I’m getting better than I’ve been in a long time.

Getting the Lard Off Progress Report – 7/20/2016

It has been almost exactly 11 months since I changed my lifestyle to eating low carb and trying to move more. I’ve been trying to eat 40 grams or less of carbs and 1200 calories or less per day.  It’s easier to stay under the calories goal than the carbs.  Today I’m down 43 lbs and 21 inches.

One of the biggest motivators these days is friends. Monday night we went bowling with 3 long time friends. We see each other most weeks, but both of the women have been very kind to make comments such as, “Linnnnn-daaaaa, you’re getting skinny!” I’m far from skinny.  According to BMI charts and weight charts, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, and a healthy weight is between 124 and 138 for my height. I’ve been trying to get taller for years. Since that doesn’t seem to be happening, I’ll shoot for losing another 30 lbs.

The most important differences I’ve enjoyed are

  • my blood test numbers are NORMAL for the first time that I can remember. My doc said I didn’t need to take cholesterol meds anymore! My blood pressure, which was barely controlled with one-and-a-half pills, to 140+/90, is now 120/70 with one pill.
  • My hair dresser remarked that my hair was thicker and my skin clearer!
  • I have a lot more energy. In fact, I have to remind myself how old I am in order not to completely overdo and pay for it the following day. (For example, my usual limit on yard work was about half an hour a day. Yesterday I worked a total of 3 hours in three sessions using the pressure washer. I’m planning to take things a bit easier today.)
  • I have noticeably less pain in my hips and knees.

I have to admit that being able to come down three sizes in jeans so far is satisfying. I’m able to wear some tops that have been too small and had just taken up space in my closet for quite awhile, too. I have a couple of nice coats that I’m HOPING I’ll be able to wear again this coming winter…

My main goal is to
