New Counter

My son told me about Cronometer.com  this morning. I checked it out, signed up for a free membership, entered my information and will see how it goes.

Cronometer.com

I was able to set up a profile, add my goals, list the food I’ll eat today – plus the exercise I’ll be doing – all within about 10 minutes. No muss, no fuss. It told me how much more I needed to burn than I ate in order to reach my desired lard loss each week, and it was easy to see how many calories I was eating, how many carbs, etc. They actually gave me more information on nutrients than I need to know (I think), but it wasn’t distracting or annoying.

If you’re looking for a good way to monitor your progress, check this out.  (I just checked MyFitnessPal.com again after several days. They’re free, but they still haven’t fixed the main page, so I’m looking around. I’m hopeful that Cronometer.com will be my new home.)

Getting the Lard Off Progress (?) Report – 10/12/2016

On our vacation last week, we stopped at fast food places while we were on the road to get something to eat. We ate quickly, went to the bathroom, and got on the road again. While we were in Thibodaux, we ate well, and Murray and John were really good about showing my husband and me how he could stay away from sugar, and any carbs I ate were my own choice. After coming home, we decided to finish out the week eating things we had missed while we were being good; i.e., spaghetti casserole and Texas toast; KFC meal with mashed potatoes, cole slaw, and the glorious biscuit; etc.

The result is that my husband LOST weight while I gained. His sugar count was up and my scale yelled at me, pleading for mercy.

Monday morning we got serious again about controlling our eating. We have agreed that our one-scoop-of-ice-cream-in-a-cup at Braum’s after bowling on Monday nights is the only dessert we will have, other than an occasional OUTSHINE fruit bar if we really need it. I’m trying to go back to the basics on my low carb lifestyle, concentrating on eating beef, poultry, fish and low carb veggies. I’m also trying to get back to my exercising, though so far, only my intentions have been good.

Today I’ve found the exercise instruction sheet that came with my new exercise ball. There are 9 different exercises listed:

  • abdominal crunches while lying on your back on the ball
  • oblique crunches, where you lie on your side on the ball, then use your core muscles (assuming you HAVE some) to straighten up, doing it 8 to 12 times on each side.
  • push ups, with your feet up on the ball and your hands on the floor
  • push ups, with your feet on the floor behind you and your elbows or hands on the ball
  • overhead squat with twist
  • Leg lunge – leg behind you on the ball, then bending the opposite knee and coming back up
  • bridge leg lifts – feet on ball while lying on your back. Lift body off the floor while extending one leg up toward the ceiling.
  • Leg raises – Standing up while holding the ball. Lean forward while lifting one leg as far up behind yourself as possible.
  • Fold yourself into a paper airplane and fly across the room

So far – I’m intimidated. I think I’ll go do my elliptical (hoping for 30 minutes) and then try ONE of the exercises with the ball.  I can tell I need these exercises, but I’ll work into them slowly so I don’t fall on my head.

SO –

I’m determined to get the weight off that I gained last week plus get started again with my exercises. Hopefully, I’ll can report good progress next week.

Progress Report – Getting the Lard Off – 9/21/2016

taolife.com

taolife.com

I’m still on the ‘Plateau from Hell,’ as far as weight and inches go, (46 pounds and 23-1/2 inches off) but I freely admit that I’ve been eating more carbs than I should for the past week. My husband was really hungry for a few things, and I had put him off because they weren’t on my low-carb foods. I finally decided to indulge, since I didn’t want to prepare two separate meals for us. I think we’re now at the end of his really strong requests. He’s happy and so am I. :0)

He’s cutting WAAAAY back on sugar. This is a really good thing and I’m trying to encourage him every way I can. There are a lot of good recipes that are low carb AND low sugar, so we should be good for the near future.

I’ve been made newly aware, lately, of my age. This is mainly due to my trying to do two miles walking with annoying Leslie every day PLUS either upper or lower body strength exercises. I messed myself up, paying the price with several days where I felt 90+ years old. I decided to try a different approach.

I’m now doing the elliptical trainer for 30 minutes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

yourellipticals.com

yourellipticals.com

On Tuesdays and Thursdays I’m doing both upper and lower body strength exercises with 5 lb. weights. (several different exercises, 3 sets of 8 reps each)

I also got an exercise ball that is now aired up and ready for me.

One of my good friends has one. She says she’s sitting on it while watching TV, bouncing. Isn’t that a wonderful mental picture? It makes me smile. She has to keep her balance in order to do this, so that involves lots of muscles.

The ball also comes with a chart of exercises I can add things as I want. I’m planning to do the ball stuff a little at a time on days I’m doing the strength exercises.  I can really use the emphasis on balance. This plan, along with just being aware that I need to keep moving (I carry a pedometer in my pocket),  hopefully will prove a good combination for me.

The Price of Indulgence

My husband fixed us a tall root beer float night before last. It was delicious, and we haven’t had one in over a year. The end result, however, was that I gained 3 lbs. :0(

Progress to date on trying to get the lard off –

Down 44 lbs

Down 22 inches

I could beat myself up over gaining the poundage or realize that a new lifestyle includes some indulges and enjoy it. I’ve decided to do the latter.

I got a blood test today in preparation for my quarterly doctor appointment, so that will tell the tale on how I’m doing.

Yesterday’s exercise was jumping up and down watching the women’s gymnastics. Wow! I’m proud to share the same PLANET as these talented women! I was particularly happy for their long-time coach, who is retiring. The women, when they found they had won, said, “We’re the Final Five.” I had tears in my eyes and I was only watching!

So – I’ve promised myself that I’m back on my low carb eating plan after the root beer float indulgence – I didn’t get anything when my husband stopped at the Sonic for a small banana milkshake after we took the horseshoe tree to Michael – and we’re having a large salad and one of our dwindling supply of truly wonderful tomatoes for dinner this evening. And I’m definitely walking with Annoying Leslie tomorrow!

Maybe I’ll have fewer promises and more actual accomplishment NEXT week.

I’m Keepin’ On Keepin’ On

Emily Davis, trendingly.com

Sometimes I have to admit that keeping my promise to report to you my progress every Wednesday in my efforts to get the lard off is hard to keep. It would be great if each and every week I could report more poundage and more inches gone. In real life, however, this is not the case – at least when you’re an old broad who really has to push herself to exercise.

I have no exciting news this week. I have been indulging lately – giving in to temptation and enjoying every minute. The latest splurges were

  • a large deep-dish supreme pizza and a coke
  • carry out from our favorite Chinese restaurant

Since I’m practicing a lifestyle now, rather than a diet that has an ‘end,’ I think it’s important to indulge now and then. Even though I gain 2 or 3 pounds, having to re-lose that poundage the rest of the week, I’ve satisfied a craving, enjoying every bite and sip, feeling I’m a real person, rather than someone who MUST eat carefully at every meal.

I’ve learned, over the past 11 months, that I can eat what used to be a regular meal and simply get back to my NOW regular low carb diet. My general weight trend is down, having lost 44 pounds so far, and my girth is a bit less, having lost 21 inches.

I’ve also learned that I can now eat at almost any restaurant and not totally blow my low carb lifestyle – unless I choose to simply enjoy the meal and get back on my ‘horse’ the next meal. I feel freer now that my goal is to CHOOSE what I eat and drink.

Right now my biggest problem is exercise. It’s lethally hot here in Arkansas, as it is every summer, but with added humidity this year that gets to me super-fast. My energy level plummets when the heat hits me in the face and my head is wet the minute I walk out the door. Even with a/c in house/stores/car, going in and out of the heat saps my energy.

The biggest thing I’m promising myself this week is that I’ll religiously do the “Walking with Annoying Leslie” DVD, or listen to the insults of the Wii Fit Plus program, plus try to keep up my strength exercising indoors….

I also have to admit that lately I’m distracted by a project frame of mind. I want to go up to my art room and try to design something fun with buttons on a tee. I’m also dreaming of cutting out a gourd. My husband and I just bought some paint to repaint our now clean, but peeling, 1000 gallon propane tank….

Getting the Lard Off Progress Report – 7/20/2016

It has been almost exactly 11 months since I changed my lifestyle to eating low carb and trying to move more. I’ve been trying to eat 40 grams or less of carbs and 1200 calories or less per day.  It’s easier to stay under the calories goal than the carbs.  Today I’m down 43 lbs and 21 inches.

One of the biggest motivators these days is friends. Monday night we went bowling with 3 long time friends. We see each other most weeks, but both of the women have been very kind to make comments such as, “Linnnnn-daaaaa, you’re getting skinny!” I’m far from skinny.  According to BMI charts and weight charts, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, and a healthy weight is between 124 and 138 for my height. I’ve been trying to get taller for years. Since that doesn’t seem to be happening, I’ll shoot for losing another 30 lbs.

The most important differences I’ve enjoyed are

  • my blood test numbers are NORMAL for the first time that I can remember. My doc said I didn’t need to take cholesterol meds anymore! My blood pressure, which was barely controlled with one-and-a-half pills, to 140+/90, is now 120/70 with one pill.
  • My hair dresser remarked that my hair was thicker and my skin clearer!
  • I have a lot more energy. In fact, I have to remind myself how old I am in order not to completely overdo and pay for it the following day. (For example, my usual limit on yard work was about half an hour a day. Yesterday I worked a total of 3 hours in three sessions using the pressure washer. I’m planning to take things a bit easier today.)
  • I have noticeably less pain in my hips and knees.

I have to admit that being able to come down three sizes in jeans so far is satisfying. I’m able to wear some tops that have been too small and had just taken up space in my closet for quite awhile, too. I have a couple of nice coats that I’m HOPING I’ll be able to wear again this coming winter…

My main goal is to

Getting the Lard Off Progress Report 7/13/2016

echoes007 via emily davis, trendingly.com

echoes007 via emily davis, trendingly.com

I’m finally seeing some progress in ending the Plateau from Hell. I did a lot of reading and found that plateaus are a given when you’re trying to lose weight. In a low-carb lifestyle, oddly enough, to get off a plateau they suggest that you eat more fat, drink more  water, exercise more.

I’ve made some changes and am seeing a difference on the scales. I’ve lost 44 lbs and 21 inches now.

Eleven months ago I was absolutely sedentary. My doctor was tactfully saying over and over again that I try to lose some weight. My blood test numbers, drawn quarterly for my thyroid, were high in everything. I heard myself telling my doctor we were trying to eat in a more healthy fashion and trying to lose weight. On the way home from that appointment in August of 2015, I finally decided I would either really try to lose the lard or would quit lying to my doctor.

I started a low-carb diet, trying to stay at 40 carbs per day or less, and 1200 calories or less. I signed up with MyFitnessPal.com to keep track of what I was eating and my exercises each day. I searched the net and discovered Dana Carpender’s low carb cookbooks. I bought one for slow cooker recipes and another for 15 minute meals. I did not get rid of all the stuff I shouldn’t eat because my husband didn’t especially want to lose weight and didn’t want to give anything up. I decided I would try a recipe and see what happened. The recipes were so good that my husband decided to eat what I was eating (and then anything else he wanted. He was sure that this would be yet another effort on my part that would be short-lived.

I dug out an old DVD that I call, “Walking with Annoying Leslie”, and use it almost every day. I’m also doing upper and lower body strength exercises with weights. So far, I’ve progressed from one set of eight of each of the exercises with 3 lb weights to THREE sets of eight with 5 lb weights. I also use my elliptical trainer when it’s not too hot or too cold in our garage. Finally, I grit my teeth and use our Wii Fit Plus. I now talk back to the lady who asks me, “Do you find you fall down a lot?” or “This seems to be a challenge for you.” I can hear my husband chuckle in the other room when I do. :0) I carry a pedometer just to remind myself to move more. The very best I’ve done in a day thus far is a little over 6,000 steps.

My husband tells me now and then that he’s impressed with my determination. He admires the fact that I’ve changed my lifestyle, lost weight, and regularly exercise now. He was impressed when my last blood test results were so good that I don’t have to take cholesterol lowering drugs anymore and my doc said my numbers were “disgustingly normal” – “better than his,” while grinning from ear to ear at me.

The fact that I’m 69 and was completely sedentary has been – and continues to be – a challenge. The fact that the weight loss and exercise has lessened the pain in my joints, allowing me to do what I’d like to do more and more, is a real motivation. It’s also really nice that my friends are saying nice things about how I look. I’ve come down three sizes in jeans so far. I can wear some things that used to be too tight, and have actually had to give away things that are too large.

Since I’ve tried – and failed – to get any taller, one goal is to shed another 30 lbs or so of lard.  I would like to be able to walk all over a park, or use the walking trail in our town without worrying about finding a bench. I would like to lengthen the amount of time I can work in the yard without being shot for the rest of the day. I want to do as much as I can to get and stay as healthy as possible for the rest of my life.

My mantra is,
