Lewis Yard Critters

We built a shop as part of our home area when we lived in Greenwood AR on top of a ridge line and 8 acres. We had a lot of fun using old propane tanks and scrap metal to create ‘critters’ who lived all around our property with us.

This one we called the ‘farmer robot’. He was in charge of all the yard work, square foot garden, and greenhouse.

We brought “when pigs fly” and “putting lipstick on a pig” to life with this critter. For years he hung over our driveway from the branch of a tree. An ice storm brought both the branch and the pig down onto the driveway. We were in the process of repairing him and repairing him, having thoughts of attaching him to a boulder beside the driveway, when we moved to Thailand.

We called this our ‘welcome robot.’ He doffed his hat at cars driving by and visitors to our place. He weighed over 200 lbs, and certain really strong gusts of wind would topple him, so we put a chain around his neck and attached the chain to trees fore and aft to keep him upright. He ‘leaned’ with gusts, but we could pull him back into place.

Our “mallard duck” ‘flew’ over our land in the back yard, attached to the pole that rose from the middle of a brick planter in the yard

The “vested popadoo bird” stood between the house and the shop.

The ‘butler’ or ‘cleaning’ robot guarded our woodpile for a while, then we moved him to beside the garage door to oversee necessary clean-ups, particularly after we brought in firewood.

This turkey was permanently pardoned and a member of the family.

And, finally, we had this 1,000 gallon propane tank that provided energy to the house (we had another 250 gallon tank for the shop). I didn’t like it being white, and so painted it to look like a watermelon. I will never forget the first time the propane guy drove up to top off the tank before winter. I thought he was going to bust a gut laughing! 🤣

Making these, and other critters, plus cutting out decorations for our mailbox down by the road was a wonderful part of our lives together.

Mama and Baby Snail

Mama & Baby Snail are refurbished and living on our front porch now. I finished repainting these yesterday and brought them out late yesterday afternoon.

Next will be cleaning and repainting our “peacock.”

We have Lunch Bunch this morning, so I don’t know whether I will start the peacock cleaning today or start earlier in the morning tomorrow.

Shovel Bird is Back

I brought out the second finished shovel bird and put him in place last night before dark. He is at one edge of the top of our driveway, ready to greet all comers.

It feels good to be getting our yard critters cleaned up and re-painted. Things were beginning to look at bit sad around here.

I hope he brings a smile to someone’s face.

“Dog with Bone” is Feeling Frisky

Our “Dog with Bone” yard critter is back up and feeling frisky. With the rains we’ve had, he had been in three pieces in the shop for quite awhile. In fact, when I took our dog Amber out with me, she wasn’t used to seeing him and barked, running over to check him out.

I plan to start cleaning another “shovel bird” today.

One of the reasons I was outside with Amber was to check on our elephant ear plants. They seem to be happy.

Box Turtle Refurb – Before

Years ago my husband and I start playing in the shop, making yard critters out of scrap metal. We chose the pieces as we decided what we were trying to make. If we couldn’t find it, my husband made it, such as cutting the feet on this box turtle out of scrap metal we had.

All this has become much harder because salvage yards and dumps don’t allow people to wander around anymore. There are liability issues, so it’s very hard to find scrap metal and parts.

We had a wonderful time making these critters and deciding where they would ‘live’ in the yard.

Sun, water, and temperature extremes take their toll on metal yard critters, so every once in a while, we take them to the shop for some much needed attention.

This is a “Box Turtle.” The pictures don’t show all the damage, but his eyes fell off, his ‘nose’ is peeling badly, and he has a lot of rust.

There is a lot of peeling paint on his back, and his feet had to be hosed down to get rid of ‘critters’ who wanted to live there.

More rust on his tail.

I spent 2-1/2 hours in the shop working on him this morning, and he is drying now. I spent quite a while washing him. I then freshened his paint, paying particular attention to all the peeled spots. I made him new eyes and glued them on. I will spray him later today with polyurethane to protect the paint as much as possible. I’ll take a pic or two and then we’ll put him back in his spot in the yard and I’ll start on another critter.

So far, my husband has put 9 critters in the shop for refurb and there are more than that to come. It’s a good thing I enjoy painting!

Promise

If you’re like me, the pandemic is causing a roller coaster of feelings, a bit of fear, lots of care and caution, and a sincere hope that this new virus strain won’t take many more lives before the experts get a handle on it and we can put this awful scare behind us. I am finding that escaping to my art room, getting paint all over me, helps me cope. I’m trying to get up there for a few minutes each day. I’ve painted an old, stained tee shirt to give it new life. I’ve painted some wooden earrings I look forward to wearing. I have an idea for a painting rattling around now that I hope to start this afternoon.

Another thing that helps is taking walks around my yard, seeing new buds ready to burst into glorious life. The buds are a reliable promise that things will get back to normal in time, and there is hope for the future for people and our countries.

I’m noticing that several of the yard critters my husband and I have made are needing to be spruced up. This sweet shovel bird will get my attention soon. Then I hope to move around the yard, giving our metal yard critters some love – and paint!

One of my favorite roses is Rio Samba. I love it because the buds you see here will soon start to open up. They start as bright yellow, then develop a coral edge on the petals, then finally turn almost all coral before needing to be pruned. At one time we’ll have all three stages of blossoms on the plant. This is one of three rose bushes we have.

How can you feel down when you see the promise of a blooming wisteria?

My veggie garden plants are smiling, too, with the promise of a continuing nice harvest. I have harvested twice so far in this young season, giving us lots of head lettuce and spinach leaves for our salads. The plants are loving the cooler gray days with lots of rain. The sun is actually shining this morning for the first time in a couple of weeks, so I’ll get out there, take some pics, and share them with you later today.

I hope that you can look around and find the promise of better times to come, too. If not, I’m delighted to share the promise I found with you.

Stay safe.
