Everyone Carries a Load

pinterest

This was especially brought home to me yesterday at Lunch Bunch.

As I looked around the table at my friends of over 20 years now, I was suddenly aware –

  • Our wonderful long-time waitress/friend is trying to be strong though her co-worker has retired now and she pulls the load for both of them while missing her.
  • the owner of the restaurant – also a long-time friend, is having to do what the retired waitress did while TRYING to find another person that he can trust
  • one of my friends is suffering from vertigo and had to miss Lunch Bunch a couple of weeks ago because of it. Thankfully, her daughter read up on the problem on the net and found a treatment that she could do at home to help her. She lives alone, except for a sweet little dog.
  • Another of my friends has a disabled son who has worked at a hospital in Ft. Smith for years. Because of the new policies of the government, the hospital is requiring vaccinations. He went in with his doctor’s letter, saying the shots would be dangerous for him. The request was denied. They then asked for a religious exemption – valid, but not as specific as his health exemption request. He was denied. He was fired. He doesn’t need to work to feed himself, but for his quality of life – his sense of self-worth as a man. The fight continues.
  • A third friend’s husband just had surgery to remove a skin cancer that required a graft. The surgeon got it all, thank goodness, and her husband is just ‘grumpy’ about not being able to go back to work yet.
  • My own life is challenging due to the changing side effects of the mini-strokes my husband has suffered.

Whether you know the people you see each day or not, the loads are carried. We need to be aware of this as we try to solve our own problems and try to deal with the many changes that are happening every day. The extra thought, trying to come up with more patience, a smile, a hug, all may make a difference as we remember all the good things around us.

Appreciation

“Red Flowers” Mini Purse (Front)

At the beginning of this week, I sold a mini purse from my HandmadeHavenByLinda site on Etsy. It looked similar to this one, but was painted with ladybugs, front and back. It was delivered today.

“Red Flowers” Mini Purse (back)

My customer wrote,

“Just received the bag – it is adorable!  Am planning on using to carry my cell phone when I am walking my toy poodle. thanks,”

Appreciation is a two-way, win/win thing. My customer liked the bag enough to buy it. She likes it. And she was nice enough to write and tell me that – plus give me a mental picture of her and her toy poodle using it. (I suggested that she might think about including a dog biscuit in the bag sometimes… :0) )

I’m now walking several inches off the ground.

Made My Day

I had a really nice thing happen when I was down at the bottom of our driveway, getting our mail before heading to town to get a haircut.

I got the mail, and was ready to get back into our truck when a truck was driving by. I waved, and started to my truck. She stopped. I went over, and she asked me if I made the decorations that are on our mailbox. I told her that my husband and I made them together. She asked me if we sold them. I told her, “no,” because we can’t make the same thing twice, and we don’t want to disappoint anyone.

She went on to say that her family detours through the neighborhood so they can see what we have on the mailbox! She was quite effusive in her praise and my spirits went through the roof. I told her that she had really made my day. Then I had to apologize because we’ve gotten lax on changing the decoration with the pandemic. I told her we would do better.

When I got home I talked to my husband. He didn’t seem as thrilled as I was, but just now, hours later, as I type this, he asked,’ Do you think we should change the mailbox decoration?” :0)

We’ll do that as we leave for Lunch Bunch Friday morning.

Her kindness has also motivated me to get started seriously on the refurb of our yard critters.

A “Proper” Birthday Celebration

My sister-in-law told me this morning that she and her Mah Jongg group helped their friend John celebrate his 80th birthday. She said, “He dressed up with a walker and shawl and scarf to get in the spirit of the moment. Lots of good chatter and neighbors honking as they passed. We think we gave him a “proper” 80th birthday.”

This is a beautiful example of the goodness of people even in the midst of the horrible pandemic, and I’m proud to be on the same planet. John’s wife was in the group originally. She passed away and her husband John was inducted into the group by this caring bunch of people. What a happy way to show John he is valued!

May we add our “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN!” to the celebration.

Petition

“Crossing the Line” – oatawa – Getty Images – iStock photo

We have been stuck at home due to the weather the whole past week. It’s 9 degrees F. right now, with a biting wind, but nothing is falling from the sky at the moment. With the forecast of snow and more snow starting later today, we’re going to try to gather our mail from our mailbox at the bottom of our driveway (hopefully not ice-covered now, as it is 650+ feet down and STEEP.) We’re also going to try to get supplies before holing in again – probably until the end of NEXT week.

I am starting a petition to do away with February – completely. Just go straight from January to March. If you’re in, please let me know and I’ll add you to the list. (I’m not sure where I will send the petition, or how many we would need to make this change, but we have to start somewhere…

I continue to HOPE things get better regarding the pandemic, our country, and the people living in it. I HOPE that qualities such as love, understanding, compassion, kindness, and courtesy are not becoming things of the past, gathering dust due to disuse. Much like I tell myself on keeping moving and exercising, “If you don’t USE it, you LOSE it.” We never really know what’s happening to the people we care about. Let’s give everyone some extra slack.

I hope that you are able to stay safe and warm today. It’s a wonderful day to have a warm, dry home.

We took our new pup to a park for 30 minutes and played some tug-of-war, and she’s been like this for over an hour. Guess she’s the right amount of dog for us.
