“A Tisket, a Basket…” – 2

Matt Tommey – Tabletop to Pedestal

I would LOVE to have this for my dining area table!

“Even the simplest wicker basket can become priceless when it is loved and cared for through the generations of a family.” ~ Sister Parish

Matt Tommey – YouTube

A new basket is justified by its utility in personal or professional gifting, the convenience and value of a pre-packaged gift, or for retail use as a tool to encourage larger purchases and improve the customer experience. You might also justify buying a new basket to enhance the aesthetic of a space or for practical home organization needs.  (I could go on, but you get the idea – there is always a reason to buy another basket.) 🤪

  • Storage and Organization: Baskets are functional for various purposes, including storing clothes, furnishings, or other household items.
  • Aesthetic Enhancement: Baskets can be used to add artistic or decorative elements to a living space.
  • Cultural Significance: The creation and use of baskets have deep cultural and artistic traditions, and incorporating them into your home can be a way to connect with these practices.

  • Personalization: You can customize gift baskets to suit the recipient’s tastes and preferences, making the gift more personal and meaningful than a standard store-bought item.
  • Presentation: A gift basket provides a special and memorable presentation that enhances the excitement of the unwrapping experience.
  • Versatility: Baskets can hold a wide variety of items, including food, cosmetics, or other goods, offering immense possibilities for a fantastic gift.
  • Convenience: Gift baskets can save time and offer a cost-effective way to give a meaningful gift.

These, of course, are works of art and well beyond my ability to actually buy them, though I’m drooling.

AND you begin to see why I banned myself from going into basket stores. I MAY be able to justify buying some for my NEW place, though….

IKEA 2 Drawer Table

This is being delivered here Wednesday morning, and assembled by IKEA people, since they have the tools needed and we don’t – AND the things with drawers have a gazillion pieces.

Brian got me a floor fan for the bedroom so I wouldn’t have to unplug the one from the living area and carry it to the bedroom to plug it in. Moving air is very important to your comfort level, no matter what you set a thermostat for. I was happy to HAVE the fan to carry back and forth, but I was delighted when he knocked on my door and brought another fan in.

When he set it up and showed me it had a remote, he said, “You need a bedside table.” I told him I had been doing just fine, but he wasn’t hearing any of it. He said,
“You need a table for your night light, the fan remote, your phone plugged into the charger, a bottle of water, kleenex, a book, your glasses….”

I couldn’t sleep last night because I was unable to turn my brain off. The biggest problem as my sleep-starved mind saw it, was, “What if the drawer table we ordered is too wide to go beside my bed?”

I looked up the table and found out the dimensions are 40×55 cms. Our notes didn’t specify which was the width. Since I don’t speak Thai, centimeters, kilograms, celscius or baht, and have to look each up to convert until I learn the new-to-me systems (duh), I ended up at my computer doing the conversions, opening my closet door and measuring again, then doing it over again because my brain function in the middle of the night is less impressive than during the daytime. 🤪

The table is 55 cms high (21-5/8″), by 40 cms wide (15-3/4″), by 48 cms deep (18-3/4″). The spot I have for the bedside table with the closet door open is 50.8 cms (20″). I had to go back AGAIN to make sure that the table is 15-3/4″ wide and we have 20″ available. WHEW!

This is probably the last piece of furniture we will buy for the condo, and we almost messed up. AND – if any of the measurements are wrong, we CAN scoot the bed over toward the outer wall some. WHEW again.

Interesting Differences

From my good friend, Marsha.

I’ve already talked about some interesting differences between living in the United States and Thailand, but some more come to mind –

When you buy a set of sheets for your bed, you may be surprised to find that a ‘set’ of sheets includes a bottom fitted sheet and two pillow cases.

I told you that we replaced the worn out bed in my condo. We bought a set of sheets and a duvet while we were at the store. When the bed arrived, the company had sent a free entire bed set with it, including a bottom fitted sheet, two pillow cases, and extra set of pillow cases for cigar-shaped pillows, and a puffy duvet.

No one expects a top sheet here. Even if you have air conditioning, the climate here is such – and the culture is such, apparently – that everyone prefers the fitted bottom sheet and a light or heavier duvet. After trying the light duvet we bought and the heavier duvet they gave us, I have to say I LIKE only having only the one sheet, and I prefer the lighter duvet.

When you go to buy dishware, it is almost impossible to find a ‘set of 4 dishware set’ for example. If you would like a set of dishware that has 4 larger plates, 4 smaller plates, 4 bowls, and 4 coffee cups or mugs, that’s what you buy – individually. (We ended up buying 2 of each.) They do sell silverware in a ‘package’ of one fork and one spoon,’ though. You buy how many sets you would like and then buy the knives and any glassware individually, as well.

I think it’s the European manner of eating where you have a utensil in each hand as you eat. They do that here. I had never tried that before and felt quite awkward at first, but I’m learning now. They put down both knife and fork to pick up a spoon, and then reverse.

I believe I have already talked about water being very important here. Brian made it clear right away that you use bottled water for anything to do with eating, drinking, or cooking. The sun is so strong that it seems you can feel the sun burning your head as you wait to cross a street. Everyone carries a bottle of water with them in a carrier of some kind so they always have some. Umbrellas to protect both men and woman from the sun are routinely used by walkers. Dehydration can be a life threatening event even in the city, and can sneak up on you, particularly if you haven’t lived in the country long. I have humongous water jugs on my counter to transfer to smaller containers that are easier to manage.

I’ve already told you about removing your shoes when you enter any private home or many businesses. Most businesses will have a sign, and then a rack of slipper-type slide-on shoes. You leave your shoes there, transfer to the slippers, do whatever business you need inside, and then reverse the process leaving. I mentioned that I was quietly amazed that shoes are always still there waiting for you when you come out again. It’s the same with motorcycles, helmets, and even packages hanging from the handlebars. It would be unthought of for someone to bother someone else’s property. I asked about theft in Chiang Mai. Brian told me it happens, but usually it’s by foreigners…

Viva la differences!

The New Sofa is Here!

This is the OLD sofa – the one that lived here when I moved in. It was incredibly rump-sprung, and the lounge part specialized in swallowing up whoever had the audacity to try to sprawl there. I have to admit that I kind of miss it in a way, in that I had figured out a way to push my feet against the end to work my way up to a lounging position, and then managed to get out of it again without having to call a crane to haul me out. It also had completely sagging arms, which cleverly allowed me to keep my water bottle, glasses, book, phone, kleenex, etc. right there handy.

The sofa company said they didn’t remove the old furniture, so we had to find some people who would come and take the old sofa away. The time they could do it was 6 days ago. Hahahahahaha! It’s amazing how you build habits quickly. I made up for NOT having the sofa to sprawl on by making my way around the room from my art alcove on the left of the photo, to the dining area, to my computer chair, to the bed and back again. It sure gave me lots of space for my yoga stretches in the evenings!

Here is my beautiful new sofa. It’s firm, with great support. I’ve already nodded off while ‘testing’ it. I THOUGHT about getting a small, low table to fit in the niche made between the lounge part and the sofa part to hold all the goodies I used to put in the sagging arms of the old sofa. When I got on the lounge part, though, the table would be a bit far to reach without sitting up – a ‘no-no’ for a lounge potato like me, and it also made me play ‘inch-worm’ either getting onto the lounge or getting back out of it.

Now we’re thinking a teak tray or something similar, maybe with cushioning on the bottom to protect the sofa (as it sits on the regular sofa part beside me) will meet these needs.

I saved two old pillows from my old sofa to use with my new one because, I can NEVER have too many pillows when I’m sprawling. I also have the wonderful blanket that Brian got me soon after we got to the air bnb because I exclaimed about the one we had on one of the first class flights to our new country. Sprawled out, pillowed, on my new, firm sofa under my extremely cuddly blanket will be one of my favorite spots in my condo!

Me – spoiled – Oh, YES! 😇

Additions!

Today the IKEA guys came and dealt with power tools and 46 gazillion pieces to assemble my chest of drawers.

The drawers not only have side rollers on each drawer, but one in the center of each. The piece is heavy, sturdy – though they did warn us not to have something really heavy in the top drawer and then have all four drawers open at the same time. DUH.

I used my new step stool yesterday to empty the high cabinets in my condo, taking a lot of what I found to the trash and the recycling area.

I spent most of today bagging up my husband’s things, carefully sorting, putting things in bags, labeling the bags carefully, and then storing them in two of the high cabinets I cleaned out in the living room. We will be able to find things needed at the nursing home quickly and easily now, plus it gives me more space to spread out a bit.

This freed up my closet area which I rearranged so I can find my stuff easily without a lot of standing on my head now. I then arranged things in my new chest of drawers.

I pooped myself out with all of this and ended up ‘resting’ for a few minutes, which actually turned out to be an hour’s NAP!

The changes continue, with my old people-swallowing sofa leaving this Friday between 2 and 3pm. This may collide with my wonderful housekeeper, Kuhn Nong; so we’ll be here, ready for the movers before 2, hoping they come and go before 2:30, when Nong is due to start. We will warn her if they haven’t shown up before she arrives.

I will be without a sofa until June 5th – 6 days where my living area will look extremely empty, and I will be moving around, trying to find another comfortable place to sit. 😃. I’ll send pics as soon as the new sofa arrives. This will be the last big change in the condo.

Sun., May 4 – 2 p.m.

This place came furnished, but we are having to change several things out for one reason or another.
This bed is pretty sad, for example. The mattress is very thin -about 4 inches deep- and crunches whenever you sit or lie on it. I think there are slats under the mattress and they make sounds like they are considering dumping me on the floor in the middle of the night.
A couple of days ago we found and ordered what will be a very nice bed for us – if my husband comes home – and, of course, for me.
We THOUGHT we had arranged for them to deliver and set up the new one and take the old one with them. Brian called yesterday to make sure that was the arrangement. They called today and said they would not take the old one, so we are having to make other arrangements. We are kind of at the mercy of these companies, so the people who will take the old bed get priority.
This means that I will sleep on the couch until the new bed arrives and is set up. That is scheduled for the 16th.
As much as I have defended this old, rump sprung couch, I have to admit I hope I don’t have to sleep on it MANY nights…😀

We are going to replace this chest of drawers, as well. The third drawer down has no bottom and none of the drawers want to open or close.

This is the closet and a little dressing table. Brian has ordered me a make up mirror so I will be able to confirm I HAVE a face and slap a bit of makeup on. 🙃

The newest thing today was we got a night light we ordered so I don’t have to leave the bathroom or alcove light on when I get up in the night!😃

Karin de Haas via Carmen Gloria Negrete Fuentes-Pinterest

I’m still smiling after looking at this. Karin is really on my wave-length, filling me with happiness, making it rise up and spill over.

First Cry

I finally got up to my art room yesterday and worked on my wood-burned squirrel. He’s coming along, but he’s difficult for me. I’m TRYING to give a suggestion of hair or fur. I’m not sure if it will be successful or not at this point, but I’m having a good time.

____________

I was going to make chili last night, but my husband requested I make beef stew, so I got the makings into the crock pot early. It turned out well, and was great comfort good for our really cold weather. It’s 19 degrees F. this morning, and the high is supposed to go above freezing this afternoon – the first time in several days. HOOORAAAAAY! Our driveway is clear, so we’re free to come and go now, but it’s really been frigid. Maybe if we all sign a petition, we can get spring early this year.

Sustainable Baddie

My ‘clean-out-my-clothes-closet’ project expanded into an also ‘clean-out-my-bureau’ project. I finished the bureau yesterday and can see the light at the end of the tunnel on the closet clean-out finally. I think one or two days more and it’ll be under control.

This project was brought on by a real problem I was having finding things that fit. My closet was jammed with several different sizes, due to my fatness (and then some success in losing the lard) and I had just stuffed a few new things in as bought, rather than trying to make any sense of things. I was pulling out something that was still too small, something that was suddenly too large, or things that just looked bad before finding something reasonable for the day. Enough was finally enough, no matter how much I hated going through things, trying things on, etc., and finally gathered the motivation to GET THE JOB DONE. Being able to see the end of the project finally feels good.

My husband and I have our semi-annual teeth cleaning in Fort Smith Monday, and we will also take all the bags I have collected to the Veterans Thrift Shop and donate them. (This also gives me extra motivation to get up there and finish the job before Monday so the donation will be ready.)

____________

Mental Floss

I had to apologize to my sister-in-law this morning because the cold wave that started here several days ago got to North Carolina and dumped snow and ice and frigid temperatures on her. She has to walk her sweet dog in it, and both came home from the morning walk cold, with snow, ice, and the salt people had put down to prevent slips and falls all over their feet. Since we’re finally getting above freezing this afternoon, hopefully I can soon send her melting and warmer temperatures!

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Reorganization of Art Room

I spent several days going through everything in my art room. This was brought on by necessity, not any ‘cleanliness’ or high organization motivation on my part. I’m a slob and I tend to stash things. The shelf just above the counter top in the above picture ‘gave up.’ The supporting brackets failed, and I found the shelf hanging at half mast, having dumped its too-heavy load on the counter below and all over the floor.

I ordered new brackets and I moved everything to other areas so we could put the shelf back up. Then the first priority was to get heavy things down from the remaining shelves all over the room and make sure they were relocated to bottom shelves or in low cabinets, with the rest of any weight distributed as evenly as possible.

The second priority was to throw away as much as I could. I’m a pack rat and I agonize when I think of something that would be perfect for something I’m trying to make and realize I have thrown it away. I forced myself to get rid of a bunch of stuff which will go out in the trash today. I actually ended up with some empty parts of shelves!

There is a certain point, though, where organization can go too far. The only time my art room is truly ‘neat’ is when there isn’t anything going on in there. I guess I have to have some ‘mess’ to be able to function. :0)

So, the ‘reorganize-the-art-room’ project is now officially finished for now. It will always be a work in progress. I’m trying to continue to go through things as I play in there to see what else should go.

I’ve started work on another wood burned sign, and I have received some key chain blanks, and they will get some attention very soon.

Jennifer Warfield-Pinterest

It’s a beautiful day here. We are supposedly at the end of our unseasonably warm weather here in Arkansas, with cooler weather to come and possibly some rain to break our drought a bit. I have absolutely no complaints.

Yesterday I spent about 3 hours in my art room, trying to get started on reorganizing everything in there due to shelf supports failing suddenly and dumping a ton of ‘stuff’ onto the floor. These are really strong shelves, but I had gotten really careless on realizing how much I was asking from the brackets. I’ve ordered replacement brackets (plus some extras) that should be delivered sometime tomorrow. Until then, there is lot of rethinking and reorganizing I can do.

Yesterday I concentrated on moving heavy stuff to lower shelves and low cabinets. I have the wall shelves empty now of almost everything. I’m going to use the lower shelf that avalanched as storage for some of groups of different types of paint when we put it back up. I’m concentrating on distributing anything with weight.

I’m certainly getting my exercise with this while paying for my carelessness. I’m bending over, moving things off lower shelves and out of lower cabinets, hauling things around and relocating them. I’m throwing away a bunch of stuff, as well, trying to create ‘areas,’ such as one set of shelves for stationery and note card supplies (with the heavier stuff at the bottom now, of course. ) :0)

It looks like a bomb hit in there, and will until most everything has found its new home and is straightened up. I’ll spend a bunch of time up there today and see what sense I can make of things.

I wish you a happy Friday.

Almost Finished

Pixabay

I’m trying to rehydrate after another session trying to get the center section of our entertainment center clean.

I freaked out when we moved one end of our 48 inch TV out to try to set up to install the YouTubeTV and finally admitted defeat. The sight was appalling to say the least.

There are at least a gazillion wires running all over the entertainment center. If I could REACH to clean behind the TV, I would be afraid the process of cleaning and vacuuming would unhook something or mess it up. (This morning while I was cleaning I barely touched the clock and it turned off.) There are no words to describe how much dog hair had accumulated, as well as the dust that blows through up here on top of our ridge line.

I’ve been working since I finished my post to you this morning. I’ve rested for 10 minutes in between sessions, except for a longer one when we ate lunch; but, otherwise, I’ve been moving things and cleaning under and behind, first with the whisk broom, then the vacuum, and finally Swiffer Dust & Shine spray and cloths. I just finished vacuuming the carpeted areas on the first floor (our office, the foyer, and the living room) and will do one more session to vacuum the tiled areas ( two half baths, the dining area, the kitchen, the pantry and the utility room.)

I’ve logged 2511 steps so far today, even though MOST of what I’ve been doing involves being up on a ladder, stretching as far as I can to get to the very back of the shelf, moving stuff from one side to the other, etc, as I clean, and then getting down on hands and knees for the three bottom shelves of the center section of the entertainment center. The center covers the whole wall of the living room. I only tackled the center section today. The other two sections will have to wait until another day.

The work has involved ALL my muscles, made me strain to get up and down the ladder, made me almost laugh as I strained to get down on my hands and knees and then up again – followed by vacuuming the whole first floor -a good, thorough workout for this old lady. I will try to do at least a short yoga stretches session this afternoon to try to stretch out and relax as much as possible.

Okay. One more session…
