Ruth Josephson-Pinterest

Everything in me melts when I look at the image above. I’m not sure who the artist is, but I thank Ruth Josephson for putting it on Pinterest.

The rain is gone for the foreseeable future, replaced by ‘Intense Heat Warnings’ again. (Heat index of 108 today.) We’ll probably be living under those the rest of the summer. I’ll try to do yard work in the mornings and encourage my husband to do the mowing as late in the evening as possible. I’m thankful for our good air conditioning!

This afternoon the wonderful bug spray man comes to spray for every kind of bug possible, plus the dreaded centipedes and scorpions that have found their way into the house in the past. I don’t think the spray covers snakes (we found the shed skin of one in the well house), though I’ve asked him to spray for EVERYTHING, including elephants, inside and out.

This time we have lots of annoying gnats. I found a stuff at Walmart yesterday that is supposed to kill them ‘on contact,’ but it’s difficult-to-impossible to spray them when they’re trying to climb into my coffee cup without getting the spray into my coffee… I’m cleaning extra well, starting in the kitchen and working my way out, removing things from counters and then spraying the ‘stuff’ on the counters and wiping them down carefully. The spray says it’s safe around children and pets, so I’m hoping that’s true.

Yesterday was the first day of school. My husband decided he wanted to go grocery shopping when the rain stopped yesterday afternoon. We almost got stuck trying to get to town, with lots and lots of “Mommy Traffic” at the two schools on the road between us and town, backed way up from the closer school to us all the way to the end of the road and around the corner on the larger highway, waiting to turn in. I suggested we take the long way around on the way home, but of course my husband scoffed.

We DID get stuck a couple of years ago with stock still traffic in both directions. I was afraid we would end up in the slammer with my husband throwing a fit and threatening to simply run INTO the car in front of us and try to push the whole line ahead so he could reach the road where we could bypass the problem. I wrote a letter to the school, pointing out the problem, emphasizing emergency vehicles wouldn’t have been able to get through, either. The schools decided to change the start and end time on one of the schools, allowing an easing of the problem. We still avoid the area at those times, since my husband is such a nut. Thankfully, by the time we had replenished our groceries and were on the way home, the traffic was manageable.

I’m almost finished with the wood burning part of a new sign. I’ll try to get that done today so I can start the painting part.

Enjoy your Tuesday.

Getting Outside Early

I’m going to head out almost immediately to take care of our tomato plants. The heat index for the foreseeable future will be in the 100’s or higher with little chance of rain, so it’s lethal to stay outside in the sun long.

Yesterday I finished weeding our trio of brick planters that run end-to-end between our front yard and our driveway. I’m making good progress on the weeding, but I’m having to be really careful not to get over-heated. I did convince my husband to wait to mow the back yard until around 5:00 yesterday afternoon, rather than when the sun was at its strongest.

Today I’m going to spray the tomato plants with EIGHT, since ‘someone’ is helping themselves to the tomatoes before I can bring them in. I’ll harvest any ripe tomatoes, weed, and water.

I’m not sure if I’ll get back out a second time to spray KILLZALL for the weeds and areas my husband can’t mow.

I’m going to scoot now. I hope you have a wonderful day, staying cool.

My husband got the generator to work yesterday manually, but there still seems to be a problem on communication between the generator and the house on starting automatically. The electric company is sending someone out Monday to take a look at things. Hopefully, the tech and my husband can figure out what needs to be done.

Today the heat index is supposed to be 104 here. UGH. I need to do weed whacking all around the yard, so will need to do MANY short sessions.

I’m also doing several loads of laundry today, so maybe I’ll climb in with the last load – :0)

I hope you have a wonderful Saturday.

Today we woke up to our dog, Amber, going nuts in the utility room where she sleeps. My husband went downstairs first, letting her out. The barking increased. I thought we had finally trapped raccoon #8. It turned out to be a squirrel, who probably was trapped this morning, since they are early risers. We’ve never caught one before. Instead of letting it out and getting on with business, my husband decided to sit on the deck watching the squirrel and listening to Amber go nuts. The barking makes me crazy, so I asked my husband if he was going to let the squirrel out. He just said, “In awhile.”

I did the morning chores as quickly as I could because the noise was really getting on my nerves. When I finished, I came into the office, as far away from the barking as I could get. Finally it stopped. Amber came in panting like a fiend and drinking water. My husband left me alone for awhile – smart man! – and then brought me a cup of coffee. I’m giving both of them a wide berth this morning, still teed off that the morning started so unpleasantly.

I took our two weeks worth of trash down to the bottom of our driveway, so I’m sure it’s out there early enough – just not sure they’ll take all of it. Fingers crossed.

The heat index will be 105 today. It’ll be the same, with little or no rain, until further notice, the weather people say. We’re under a burn ban and actually had a wildfire north of us recently. Happily, it was controlled before it burned any houses and no one was hurt. We’ve had heat waves before, but usually in August. It’s disconcerting that the heat is so relentless early this year. It will be amazing if anything lives, even with our irrigation systems working now.

I’m hoping for a nice, quiet afternoon. I wish the same for YOU. :0)

Since I griped to you about not getting my long-awaited J.D. Robb book, (# 52 in the series that just came out in paperback,) I have received TWO. I’m watching my Amazon account now to see if they are charging me for both copies of the same book. Can’t make me happy – either not enough or too much of a good thing. :0)

We just came in from working in the shop very briefly this morning. I finished painting the latest yard critters to be refurbished, “Mama Snail & Baby.” I’ll take pics when we bring them out later today when the paint is dry.

I have TWO mouth-watering art techniques I want to try as soon as the refurbishing project slows down: “Acrylic Pour” and “Impasto Painting.” I’m enjoying myself immensely watching YouTube demonstrations, trying to learn what I can before throwing caution to the winds and trying it. I would like to find some wrap around canvases first, so that they wouldn’t have to be framed to be enjoyed.

My husband is hoping that our grass will get ‘brown and crunchy’ due to the high heat and lack of rain. I hate to tell him that we MAY get a cool front and some rain Sunday…. maybe the weather people are being too optimistic.

Have a wonderful Thursday!

How Hot Can it Get?

This was posted by one of our local weather people on Facebook yesterday. He said today would be much the same. We are in Greenwood (left column).

On that happy note – we plan to do a lot of staying inside!

I hope YOUR weather is much more sensible.  Enjoy your Monday.

Hot Dog

hot Amber

With the temp and humidity today, this afternoon will FEEL like 106 degrees F.  UGH. Our forecasters are saying that tomorrow we’ll finally get our first rain in over a month and a bit of a cool down. Hooray! Meanwhile, we turn on fans, A/C, drink lots of cold drinks, and pant a lot.

The cats and the fish are taking things in stride.

So, until about noon, we’ll all just sit under the ceiling fan with the doors and windows open, then be really thankful for the a/c until this evening. Some of us hang our tongues out straight, some out the side.

If we get the forecasted rain tomorrow, we’ll all go out (except maybe the cats and the fish) and dance in the rain while my husband can finally burn some trash….

Happy Tuesday everyone!

A Heat Index of WHAT?

Our temperature this afternoon is supposed to reach at least 100 degrees. Our humidity is 61%. Just for giggles, I decided to look up the heat index (what it FEELS like) and it said 131 degrees F.   WHAT!

My husband and I have been going out about 8pm and doing what we can in the garden. Last night we got the metal support up for the 3rd raised garden bed box! Tonight we’ll try to put the wooden garden box into the support and fill it with Mel’s Mix. (At least we can put in the mix that I put in the trash cans. With all the asparagus roots I dug out of the garden, I didn’t come up with nearly as much Mel’s Mix to reuse.).  I may have to wait until Sunday evening to mix up enough to fill the new box. When we get it filled, I’ll take pics.  We also need to change the bulb in a yard light on the shop, if we can.

Meanwhile, if you’re in one of the dangerous or extreme heat areas today, please take care of yourself. Heat stroke is no laughing matter.

What the Heat Index Means

Screen Shot 2016-07-10 at 10.28.26 AM

With the actual temperature at 92 degrees F, and the humidity at 74%, that means it FEELS as if it’s 116 degrees F outside. I took the dogs out, and my husband walked out to the shop and back, and we decided that’s enough for today, except for grocery shopping.
