A Clean Fish is a Happy Fish

My husband helps me clean out the aquarium once in about 10 times. This time he decided that we needed a better filter. I told him that I had researched the subject before and that we had the best reasonably priced filter system and filters for a 5-gallon tank. He asked me to research again and get something else, so I did.

I read and read, compared, then finally found a source that listed the ‘best’ filter systems for 5-gallon tanks. I have ordered an Aqua-Clear Filter System, plus additional inserts.  They are supposed to be delivered tomorrow.  I’ll try it and let you know.

Meanwhile, the fish have a clean tank, clean glass beads, clean decorations, lots of bubbles putting oxygen into the water, and a clean filter and system that is ‘supposed’ to handle a 10-gallon tank, but doesn’t do a stellar job on this one.

I LOVE passing the bright, clean tank with happy fish swimming around, blowing bubbles at me!

(I’m starting to get used to the ‘click-click-click’ sound the goldfish causes as he sucks a glass bead up off the bottom of the tank and lets it go again. :0))

Happy Fish

I just finished cleaning out the aquarium, scrubbing the fish, and putting it all back together again. (Okay – I don’t scrub the fish, but I THINK about it each time.)

You can see the large gold fish well, but you can’t see the WHITE gold fish.  He IS in there, just crowded out of the picture.

My Fish are Beaded

I cleaned out our aquarium a few days ago, only to have the water cloud up and turn yucky almost immediately. :0(

I decided that when I cleaned it out again yesterday, I would make a big change.  I took all the new white gravel out and replaced it with the glass ‘beads’ I had in the pantry for silk flower arrangements. I figured that they would have almost no residue to cloud up the water and the fish might like them!

I put black beads along the bottom and some red beads on top. The fish didn’t say anything when I put them in their newly decorated aquarium. They just gathered in the corner, wiggling and opening and closing their mouths. I went ahead and gave them some food, even though it wasn’t their usual time, to make up for any discomfort they experienced while waiting for me to fix their home.  The water seems to be staying nice and clear so far. My husband came in and REALLY liked the new look, so at least he and I are happy… :0)

Happy Fish!

It’s been awhile since I showed you my fish.

The largest one is about 3-1/2 + inches long, though he won’t cooperate much in my efforts to measure him. The others have almost tripled in size since I got them a couple of years ago, but the largest has outdone them all.

I’ve had cleaning out the aquarium on my list of things to for several days now, but finally got it done this morning. When I used the vacuum on the gravel, the other end, which was hanging in the sink, suddenly flipped up and gushed water everywhere. I ended up having to move everything off the L-shape of the counter, sop up fish water, then clean and wipe down.

The fish didn’t say  much about the accommodations when I put them back in the aquarium, but I’M happy enough for all of us that there digs are now clean.

Happy Fish?

We used to have a 40-gallon aquarium. It, and the metal support table on which it sat, covered one whole side of our dining area. I loved it, but we decided it was ‘too much work’ at some point and sold it.

Now I laugh, because gold fish bowls or tanks take a LOT more work than our aquarium ever did, and we had lots of fish then in comparison. Now we have only  4 gold fish in a 5-gallon aquarium. They seem to delight in making their water cloudy, doing it with alarming rapidity.

If they weren’t so SWEET I wouldn’t put up with it. They don’t do tricks, smile, be affectionate, or anything else you hope pets will do, but they DO pile up in the corner at feeding time – mornings and evenings – wriggling their little bodies and opening and closing their mouths with excitement when they see I’m there. That’s enough to make all this worth it.

I don’t know if they care about their surroundings, but each time I clean the aquarium, completely changing the water, vacuuming the gravel, etc., I also change the decorations.

Although they don’t SAY anything, they are at least 3 times the size they were when I first bought them and brought them home…
