Halloween in Chiang Mai

https://www.chiangmaicitylife.com/citynow/whats-on/food-and-drink/the-ultimate-halloween-thrill-at-onenimman/

I hope this link works for you. It shows one type of entertainment for the whole family going on today, which is already Halloween.

I did this yesterday.

I regret that the world is such that Halloween can’t be the simple child-centered holiday it was back in the old days when I was young.

I loved planning ‘what I would be’ each Halloween, using things I found around the house. We never bought store costumes. We loved searching the house for things that would make up our ‘costumes,’ sometimes wheedling, sometimes begging to be allowed to use something that had to be returned in perfect shape after the celebration was over.

My friends and I, usually a group of about six girls, would then walk down the hill toward the neighborhood where houses were much closer together and people really got into the spirit of trick-or-treating. They left their porch lights on if you were welcome to knock at the door. Many of the yards and porches were decorated with wonderful stuff, cute or scary.

My favorite treats were little candy bars. I liked the milk chocolate ones best, being a chocoholic, but ANY candy bars were wonderful. I also loved to get cookies or chips.

When our bags were full, we limped home, tired but elated by our celebration and freedom. My parents made my brother and I dump our goodies on our beds, where they received a cursory parental inspection. Back in those days the main threat was a razor blade in an apple. Then we could choose one big thing or three little things to eat. The rest went back in the bag to be doled out by my mom at her discretion. Those were the days!

I wish you a Happy Halloween – either today or tomorrow – wherever you are. I hope you have a great celebration.

Thursday Thoughts 10-30-2025

I have always been impressed by black and white images taken by skilled photographers, but I’m drawn like the proverbial moth to a flame to color. The more of it the better.

Halloween is almost upon us. I have a couple of sketches ready to paint that have a Halloween theme. They make me feel as if I’m celebrating a bit, even though I’m in Thailand now. 😃. I’ll work on those today.

_______________________

Today I took a virtual treadmill vacation to ‘nature’s paradise’ I’ll call it. Maybe it was Oregon, but I enjoyed walking along wooded paths, across icy patches on hilly slopes, beside rushing streams, seeing some glorious waterfalls, mountain-top ponds and lakes, and finally up to huge boulders in the middle of a flat plain then down a path across the sand to the ocean! Not a person nor building to be found. Lovely!

After breakfast Brian and I went to get cash for my massage and cleaning lady tomorrow. He followed me back to my place so he could take pictures of my finished jigsaw puzzle to order a glass print of it for me. When I told him about loving to FEEL the finished puzzle, he looked at me with his eyebrows raised. He said he would “leave us alone so we could have some privacy.” I laughed my head off. 🤣. I call myself a ‘puzzle pervert,’ but my friend Marsha suggested a much kinder term, a ‘puzzle appreciator.’

I will leave the finished puzzle on my table until the new one arrives. Then I’ll take it apart and leave it in a gallon-sized plastic bag with the picture that came with it in the recycle area in the building so someone else can enjoy it.

I’m looking forward to starting my turtle puzzle.

Remember to include some fun in your day. Laughing is great exercise, you know. 😂🤣😛

I hope you’re enjoying these Halloween posts. Finding the really creative children’s costumes parents are making, plus gathering the wonderful Jack-O-Lanterns people are creating – and sharing them with you – is going a long way in not being able to participate this year.

Halloween 2025

I found out that Halloween is known as the “Ghost Festival.” People dress up and prowl the streets, but I don’t know if kids trick or treat.

Meanwhile, I have found some cute children’s costumes and neat Jack-o-Lanterns I want to share with you. 😀

MEMORIES – I absolutely love this. I’m going to save it so I can enjoy it again and again. I have wonderful memories of trick-or-treating back in the dark ages when I was young and the world wasn’t as wonky. I would go with a group of my friends. By ourselves. No supervision. Complete freedom. Ahhhh! The good ole’ days. :0)

We had quite the storm overnight. The thunder woke us up sometime this morning. I was able to go back to sleep. My husband wasn’t, and so got up. He was asleep in his recliner when I came down. The cold front has gone through now, we think the rain has stopped for now, and the high is only supposed to be 68 today.

I had a good day of exercise yesterday – videos with weights, yoga stretches, and walking. I’m hoping to get it more this afternoon. I’m also scheming about ideas for wood-burned key chain designs. Do you have any ideas for me?

Withdrawal Help for Halloweeners

Do you get caught up on all the hoopla around a holiday and have trouble going on with life afterward? Here are some skeleton art images that hopefully will help us through today and get back to ‘normal.’

These were gathered into an article by Ezzly on hubpages.com. I hope they helped you as much as they did me.

Oooooh!

Source Unknown – Sorry. These costumes would be particularly good on rainy, cold Halloweens, except you’d need a way to free your hands to gather candy and other goodies.

Pinterest – I think I would stay clear of this guy. Isn’t he wonderful? Not clear if this is a costume or a yard decoration. Whichever, I love it.

Pinterest – I think this is SOOOO creative. Might even give you nightmares if you met him on the street…

YouTube.com – I would definitely think twice about trick-or-treating at this house.

How Do You Carve YOUR Pumpkin?

Britannica

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays.

When I was a child – back in 1492 or so – things were much simpler. My brother and I scrounged around, looking for a way to ‘dress up’ for Halloween, creating costumes. We didn’t buy any costumes. Sometimes we bought masks, but they were generic type masks, not a particular character. My parents would get set up to hand out candy. My brother would head out the door to find his friends, disappearing until the time my parents said for us to be home. I went out to find MY friends and we headed for the neighborhood next to ours, where the houses were nice and close together and LOTS of porch lights were on, welcoming all comers.

We walked and walked, happily filling up our Halloween bags and eating at the same time, having the time of our lives. The only parents we saw on the streets had super young children who were obviously out for their FIRST Halloween. Very few cars. Kids of all ages everywhere. When our bags were full, or we were too tired to go any farther, we would finally head home.

My brother and I each took our Halloween bags to our rooms, to be hidden until we had each eaten all we wanted over the next days. Stomach aches were a part of it. Only a HINT of warnings that maybe we should look at what we got carefully before throwing whatever it was into our mouths. The only one I remember was the possibility of razor blades in apples. As I said, life was simpler then. And GLORIOUS.

The world has changed, and the holiday and celebrations have been forced to change with it. Now there are subsidized Haunted Houses and group parties. Kids are still going Trick-or-Treating, but mommies accompany them, or follow in cars. Only occasionally will you see a costume a child has created. Most of them are purchased. No one stays out late. Everyone checks every piece of candy to be as sure as possible that all is okay. The kids don’t know any differently, but it makes me a bit sad.  Things will really be different this year, with the pandemic. I hope they still look forward to the celebration and eat too much candy!

I Love Halloween

Pinterest

I have always loved Halloween. A hundred years or so ago, kids went trick-or-treating with a group of friends. Parents were off limits. We would leave, gather as much candy as we could, and then go home again, tired and happy, already full of candy.

100 Laughs

I’m still fascinated by people’s creativity – both in kids’ costumes and in carving of pumpkins. Since we live on top of a ridgeline, some 650+ feet up a steep driveway from the road, we don’t have trick or treaters. I still enjoy the holiday.

Happy Halloween – Take 15

creative-ads.org

I love Halloween. The creativity in the costumes and the talent and thinking outside the box on the pumpkin carving simply make me drool. Since our driveway is 650+ feet up a steep ridge line, and out away from town, we don’t have the hoards of trick or treaters we used to have. In some ways I miss it, even though one year we spent $200 on candy, not wanting to turn anyone away…

hative.com

One Halloween I’ll never forget my husband got a truly awful mask and put a pillow high on his back to make a humpback. He covered it with a big blanket. The first kids showed up and one little girl cried. My husband ripped off the mask to show her the monster wasn’t real and she agreed to forgive him, particularly since he gave her a candy bar. The word quickly spread and the whole neighborhood of kids HAD to visit ‘the house with the monster.” Our son, Brian, was scared of the ‘monster,’ too. Even when HE put the mask on and wasn’t happy until the mask went away. My husband had the time of his life that Halloween.

I have fond memories (from went dinosaurs roamed) when we went trick or treating in groups of friends, without parents, having a blast. I went with a bunch of friends. We were gone until our sacks were bulging. We brought the candy home and my mom made us put it in the cupboard after choosing a couple of pieces to eat, doling out the rest until the end of the year.

coolpumpkindesigns.blogspot.ca.

I always drooled over the costumes in the stores, but we never bought them. We always came up with costumes on our own, with funny hats, maybe a mask, borrowed shoes, oversized clothes, blankets, etc. It was fun to try to figure out what we could do that would be gory or funny.

I remember our family trying to carve a pumpkin one year. My parents were both only children who had never carved a pumpkin. We did the best we could, finally achieving a more or less classic look, after working ourselves to death and making a huge mess. Every year as our son grew up, I tried to carve one. I got a bit better each year, but never carved one I really thought looked good. I love seeing what really talented folks can do now.

Enjoy your celebration this year!
