Did It!

Dreamstime – Pinterest

Mother Nature warmed things up here yesterday afternoon for long enough that I was able to clean out the second tomato planter. This was a laborious process of trying to untangle or cut the plants off the tomato cages and supports, then stack the cages and supports out of the way, then pull the plants out – sometimes one branch at a time – then gather the frozen tomatoes that could now be used as ammunition in case of intruders, then dispose of the vegetation, then clean up a bit and put the wheelbarrow away, I was tired and cold by the time I finished, but feeling triumphant that another yard project could be checked off my list.

We had a nice tomato harvest this year, even though our weather was a bit wonky. I’m still enjoying some cherry sized tomatoes for snacks and in salads. :0)

Today’s project – again if Mother Nature is feeling cooperative – is to do some weed whacking in my garden area.

Winter for our Square Foot Garden

We converted two brick planters on the far side of the house to be used to grow tomatoes. Those are the ones I’ve been trying to clean out. As you can see here, our square foot garden is ready for the winter. This is the first time we’ve used the tarps. This is to keep the Mel’s Mix Soil Alternative from blowing out and also hopefully to keep weed growth to a minimum as far as getting the planters ready for spring planting.

It’s the perimeter of the garden outside the fencing, plus the area around the trash barrels that hold the Mel’s Mix ingredients and around the propane tank for the shop that need attention with the weed whacker. I will be happy if I can get that under control today. :0) Right now it’s 37 degrees F. – too cold, but the forecast is for 59 this afternoon. Fingers crossed.

This and my yoga will be my exercise for the day.

Maniac Mulcher

I THINK the leaves are dry enough today that I can blow them into piles and put them through our leaf mulcher. If they aren’t, I’ll have to wait until NEXT week, since the rest of the week here is supposed to be rainy.

I just finished unhooking and gathering the extension cord we’ve been using for the greenhouse. This was a job, because we had TWO 75 foot HEAVY extension cords linked together to get from the house to the greenhouse. I THINK I have the greenhouse ready for winter now. My basic book for using a greenhouse says that I can extend my growing season in the spring by starting seeds for hardy plants, such as broccoli and cauliflower, in mid February, and most other early spring plants, such as lettuces, spinach and such at the beginning of March. Until then, things will be idle out there, though I’ll get out and try to organize for seed planting soon.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to do things like final weed whacking, clean up, mulching, pruning, etc. to get ready for winter.  I’ll also harvest lettuce from the raised bed, square foot garden. I have two kinds of lettuce, Bibb and Simpson, carrots and celery left.

Right now, we have so many leaves in the front yard, you can hardly tell there is any grass under there.

This is our mulcher.

We attach a 39 gallon trash bag to the bottom part (orange). We dump the leaves in the top and run the mulcher to put the mulched leaves into the bag. Then I run the bag full again, because the first time doesn’t get nearly as small as I would like. Then the bags go into the garage until I have the flower planters cleaned out, and then I’ll fill them up with the mulch we’ve made.

This time of the year, it’s all I can do to try to get everything outside done, so I’m not doing yoga or my elliptical trainer until things are under control.

I hope the weather where you are is cooperating with your plans today.

Nice Fall Saturday

“Red Tree in Fall” – Paul Militaru Photography

I WISH our trees looked like this.  We had a lot of rain this spring and summer compared to what we normally have followed by an entire month of August with not one drop of rain. This caused the trees, in survival mode, to shed their leaves early.

We do have a lot of leaves in the yard now, though, and I’m HOPING that they are dry enough that I can use the leaf blower to pile them up and then run them through the shredder this afternoon. It’s on 44 degrees out there now, but it’s supposed to get to high 5o’s or low 60’s this afternoon. It would be good if I could clean up the yard, making good leaf mulch for my flower planters in the process.

It seems like the yard work is neverending around here. I still need to do more weed whacking, plus prune and clean up the flower planters. I need to harvest the lettuce in the garden, too.

Since my to-do list is much longer than my energy supply, I’ll choose one thing to try to accomplish outside and see how it goes.

I hope the weather is nice where you are and that you’re planning something fun for the day.

I’m Getting There

This is the really crazy time of the year when I meet myself coming and going, feel guilty when I’m doing one thing when I should be doing another…

Last night I couldn’t sleep. I really tried, and then came downstairs. Usually I read awhile, but last night – since I couldn’t sleep because I couldn’t turn my brain off – running through what I needed to be doing, I got our Christmas cards ready to mail.  I finished about 3a.m.

Yesterday I spent all afternoon cleaning off the deck and front porch and putting trash bags over the planters in preparation for winter. I’m happy that that chore is now done, but it put me behind on all the rest of the stuff I NEED to do!

Now I can put a check mark beside –

  • Clean off front porch and deck and prep for winter
  • Get Christmas cards ready to mail.

I’m ALMOST to the point after working this morning where I can check off getting Christmas presents ready for my good friends. (I’m going to paint 24 note cards today and tomorrow to finish up the group.)

I’m also continuing to work on clearing off my desk and reorganizing the office shelves.

I’m heading up to my art room to get started on the note cards.

Are YOU having a good day?

Prepping for Winter Continued

Essential Hardware

Essential Hardware

This afternoon my husband and I prepared the fall garden for winter. We fixed a hose that needed to be relocated in the fall garden section, draining the hose and reattaching it where it needs to go. Then we took off the irrigation system controller that fit between our above the ground agricultural faucet and the hose that goes out to the garden. Now we don’t have to worry about the brains of the system freezing. I took the batteries out and stored the system in the shop.

We also had our geothermal heat and air conditioning checked out by the expert who checks things spring and fall to make sure we don’t have any problems, and we changed the big filters. We then discovered that the exhaust flexible hose from the dryer to the outside of the house was loose and we could see sunlight! We got that fixed pretty easily and THINK it’ll now stay put.

We’re now pretty well ready for winter. The garage now has dry wood up the wall below the cat cubes where the kitties can stay warm. We won’t have to get out into the weather if we need to replace the firewood we have ready to light in the fireplace. (We didn’t actually need the fireplace last winter, but we love to light one, anyway, just for the comfort factor of being in a nice warm house when it’s yucky outside.) :0)

We have a big list on the fridge of what we need to finish in order to be ready to get snowed in. I think there are still a few things to go, but they’re minor things.

One of my friends in Denver said she was watching it snow outside today! I told her it was 86 here today, but that we were supposed to get rain tomorrow along with a stiff cold front, bringing freezing morning temps Sat, Sun, and Monday. Hard to believe, but we know it’s coming.

I’m ready to put sheets over my fall garden plants tomorrow night – hoping to keep my plants alive as long as possible.

Are you getting ready for winter?

Prepping for Winter

Autoweek

Autoweek

We have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline truck like this one, except ours isn’t as clean and shiny as the one in this picture.

Today, as part of our preparing for winter list, we changed the tires in our shop.

When we bought it, we bought 4 extra wheels and then bought snow tires. We had the tires mounted and balanced on the wheels and brought them home to store in our shop.  (This is really important because our driveway is STEEP, and about 650 feet long.) The driveway is on the north side of our property and is shaded all the way down, so we still have ice and snow when the rest of the planet has thawed and forgotten the storm.)

Twice a year my husband and I change the tires. Today we took off the regular tires and put on the snow tires for winter.  This is a laborious process, and it definitely takes both of us, but we save about half a day and about $80 doing it ourselves. We have this down to a routine. I’m the go-fer, moving tires around, finding the wheel nuts and special tool we need to get the regular tires off. I hand my husband the tools and parts he needs, and he then hefts the tires up and on the car. We have an air compressor so we can check the tire pressure when the tires have been changed to be sure the pressure is right for the truck. Today we discovered that our emergency spare, which is supposed to have 60 psi pressure, only had 48!

_______________________

My husband keeps a log of when we do major stuff. He found that the battery on the truck is only 2 years old, so should get us through the winter nicely. The oil was changed last month. We should be fixed now for safe travel in the winter. The only thing we need to finish the job is putting our emergency bags in the car if we’re going on a trip or any significant distance from home.

Another thing we did was get the fireplace ready for winter. We have discovered we chose well when we bought our fireplace insert over 30 years ago. It’s called a “Country Flame” fireplace insert. It burns really cleanly. We had our chimney checked a few years ago, feeling guilty that we had NEVER had it cleaned. The guy thought the house was new! Lucky us!!! We are now set up to burn our first fire when needed, with wood, kindling, etc. ready for a lighted match. We had to get a new rug to protect our carpet this year because we moved the old one into the utility room to give our older dog, Bambi, more traction when he tries to get up out of bed.

____________________________________

The third thing we did today to get ready for winter was change the LED insert for the light outside the shop. It’s on a timer. When we get ready to walk back to the house, we can turn on a timer which lights the light for however long we’ve set so that we can see easily to get back to the house. It lasted a long time, but we had to take out the little bitty flashlights we have on our key rings last time because the insert had finally burned out. We had a replacement part, and so were able to get out the ladder, take off the front glass of the light, and put in the insert. (My husband went up the ladder and changed the insert, since I tend to freeze when I go up a ladder. I held the ladder for him, then the front glass of the light, handed him the insert, then the light front, then held the ladder as he came down.) He’s the brains. as well as brawn – I’m the go-fer. It’s SO much easier to do stuff like this in the daytime, when the weather is glorious, like today, than during sleet. We’ll get a replacement insert tomorrow when we go to town so it’ll be there waiting the next time we need one.

It’s almost 5pm and I did not get out in the yard to do the leaf mulching. Bah. Humbug. Hopefully, we’ll have another nice day tomorrow and I can get that done.

The days go whizzing past my head….

I Lied…

Jen's Creative Media Blog

Jen’s Creative Media Blog

It’s just before 5pm and it’s starting to get dark outside. I just came in from pruning and cleaning out the last of the large planters. I didn’t even THINK about mulching today, or get to my last section on my yoga DVD. :0(

Tomorrow is another day, however, and my INTENTIONS are to get three things accomplished by the end of the weekend:

  1. spreading mulch into the freshly cleaned out planters,
  2. getting the snow tires on our Honda truck
  3. Do the “overall flow” section of my ‘yoga for old folks’ DVD set

If I get anything ELSE accomplished by the end of the weekend, that will be gravy.

Now I’ll figure out some dinner for us and then do some serious relaxing tonight.

I hope YOU had a wonderful day, too.

Too Much Yard Work!

LawnService.net

LawnService.net

Every day I’ve been getting out and cleaning out flower beds. I never thought one could have too many flower planters, but this time of the year, it’s a bit too much for this old broad. We built 17 brick planters over the years, mostly when our son was here and able to help with all the work. Some of them are 8 feet long by about two feet wide. Others are 4 feet square. We have them in various places all around the house. ( I finally stopped this post and went around the house counting the planters because the numbers in my mind kept changing)  :0).

We built these because we live on top of a ridge line. There is no ‘soil’ up here. We had to blast with dynamite in order to build the house and put in a septic system. The only soil we have around the house was trucked in. I tried to create ‘beds’ the first couple of years we were here, but it was too much work, even 30 years ago.

We have now converted one 8 foot planter and one square one to square foot garden planters. One is in a nook between the back of the house and the porch. The other is on the east side of the house. We plan to use both of these for growing tomatoes in the spring and summer.

That leaves – 15 planters to clean out, prune back, and then fill with the leaf mulch I’ve made.

I’ve finished 5.

planter2

This gives you an idea of what I’m doing.

A couple of planters are ready for mulch. 3 more are about half cleaned out. Several haven’t been touched yet.  I’m hoping that if I can get out there for awhile each day, I’ll finish by the end of the week.

We’re trying to work through our “Getting Ready for Winter” list, too. Some of the stuff is quick and easy. Other things are “it takes two of us,” and some are down right hard. We’ll do a few of those each day, too.

I hope that the weather where you are encourages you to spend time outside. Except for the seemingly endless amount of work involved, I’m loving the cooler weather!
