To Eat – Or Not To Eat

I’m trying to regroup on what to eat – or not to eat – since I’m getting my digestive system back in shape after a combination of not being able to handle the fat with my lack of gallbladder, choosing some OTC meds to deal with that, which made my body fail to absorb my thyroid meds. UGH.

Happily, I found an article that lists 11 foods to eat – basically regardless of which diet plan you’re following. The article was on MyFitnessPal.com, written by Jessica Migala

Mostly, it listed things I’m already eating – a confirmation I’m heading in the right direction – leafy greens, avocado, salmon, walnuts, olive oil, berries, broccoli, red cabbage, chia seeds, kiwi, and beans. I’m now trying to concentrate on eating more good veggies, enjoying some fruit, eating meat more as a flavoring than the main thrust of the meal. I’m drinking lots of water, plus enjoying some Chai tea every once in a while.

Today I’m going to do my three short exercises videos from my guy Mike from Australia (warm up, stretches, and weights). I’ll do 15 minutes on my elliptical trainer in the garage, and then half an hour of yoga stretches later this afternoon.

I’m kind of working this out as I go. I’m going through some recipes for Mediterranean style cooking as I have the time.

A Little Progress

I’ve told you that we have changed our eating habits, trying to make sure we control our portions while actually enjoying our food while trying to lose the lard.

I also told you that my husband has essentially reached his weight goal. We are still watching his sugar like hawks, since he is Type II diabetic and I am trying to encourage him to exercise – something for which he just gives me a long, long look.

I just weighed and measured this morning, hoping for some progress. I’m delighted to report that both the scales and the tape measure were only smirking, rather than laughing at me! :0)

I am now down 42.4 pounds from my lardiest, and there are 42.95 inches less of me. I would like to lose another 30+- pounds.

I haven’t just picked a number from a hat. It would be the middle of the BMI healthy range for my height. I also read an article that said, although the BMI charts may be ‘obsolete,’ your waist circumference is a good indication of your overall health. I would like to lose 3 more inches from my waist. (I’ve lost 9 so far).

My yard work, elliptical trainer, and yoga stretches are helping me get more flexible and improve my balance. I’m hoping to be able to report more progress at the end of the month.

Eating vs NOT Eating

I have told you that my husband and I are REALLY enjoying the frozen meals from REAL FOOD in Greenwood. My experiment, since the food is SO good (but has no nutritional information provided) is to monitor the scales, take our blood pressure and blood sugar measurements twice a week (we BOTH are on meds for high blood pressure, and my husband is a Type II Diabetic – although he will deny that, saying only that he has a ‘sugar problem.’) and use these frozen meals as our main meal of the day, skip breakfast, and eat a snacky lunch (such as tuna fish salad) and a CAREFUL snack, otherwise.

We are finishing our first week and will enjoy our last REAL FOOD meal for the week this evening. I will make some keto chili (Suzanne Ryan, Simply Keto) tomorrow for the weekend.

I am continuing to drink water until my eyeballs float, and am conscientiously doing my exercises morning and afternoon (elliptical trainer in our garage in the morning and yoga stretches in the afternoon.)

I lost a pound this morning!

Fingers crossed that when I measure at the end of the month, the measuring tape will at least smirk at me, if not smile a bit.

I am determined to get as healthy as I can – losing the lard, strengthening my core, and increasing my flexibility – so that I can enjoy life, doing what I would like to, for as long as possible.

Good Start

I lost another pound yesterday, so I’m down 10.6 officially since we started Nutrisystem, and 32.6 lbs down since my lardiest.  I have a long way to go, but I’m feeling good that we have a good start now.

My husband doesn’t have much weight to lose, but he is diabetic and his blood sugar numbers have been a real challenge for about two years now. His sugar was off the chart. He had double vision and pain in his feet. He is now registering the lowest numbers we’ve seen since we’ve been monitoring AND he gets to eat fruit again! He really looks forward to his SMARTCARB snack of an orange or an apple, since it’s been two years since he could enjoy them. He also likes to have some blackberries on his cereal on FLEX BREAKFAST day. His attitude about Nutrisystem is good, and for that I’m truly grateful.

“I” am the one who really needs this program for weight loss. Several years back my thyroid was completely radiated away due to Grave’s Disease. A couple of years ago I said goodbye to my gallbladder, which then made the low-carb diet we were trying to follow a challenge, because my body had trouble handling the fat. My blood pressure is a problem, and triglycerides are high, so I’m hoping that getting the lard off and eating healthy will make my doctor realize I’m serious at our next regular appointment in August.

We both are calmer about portions since we know we’ll eat again in 3 hours. Neither of us has been hungry. My appetite has always been voracious – when we were dating my husband would say, “We need to get you something to eat!” his code for me being ‘snappy.’  My husband said last night, “I don’t see any reason we can’t stay on this plan as long as you want to.”

We quit several years ago because Nutrisystem kept doing away with the choices my husband liked. Finally, he was so upset we had to stop. Now they have SO many more choices – also adding frozen choices – that it will take us several months before we have tried everything. We like the fact they let you know when the deadline is for making changes for our programs, and that we can make changes any time we like up until then.

SO – a Good Start on getting healthier!

Progress of a Sort

I have a good start on the ‘reboot’ of my low carb eating and exercise plan now.  I’ve been good for a week now, even managing to lose a bit of weight when we went out to eat. I lost 3 lb this week. My totals are: a loss of 17 lbs and 10.5 inches. I’m still playing catch-up and re-lose from my ‘stumble-and-splat’ when I was concentrating on my husband’s need for low or no sugar, rather than paying attention to that AND low carbs. Lesson finally learned.  I’ve also learned that just working hard isn’t a good substitute for actual exercise.

I’m finding some low carb recipes that are real winners lately. My husband is requesting that I include them on the menus for the week! I’m trying to post – if not the entire recipe – at least the link to it. (One lady asked me very nicely to only give the link to the recipe on her website, rather than posting the whole thing with credit, so I’ll comply.) You can find some of them under two categories here: “Cooking/Canning/Recipes/Low Carb” and “Cooking/Recipes/Low Carb Lifestyle.”

One thing that is really helping me keep my head on straight on how many carbs and calories I’m eating is the MyFitnessPal.com website.  This has the best database of foods I have found. On other websites, you have to list each ingredient in a recipe in order to get a total carb count. I just don’t have the patience for that. On this website, you type in what you hope to find already listed. If it isn’t there, you can add it, all on one short form and then click to share it with others or not. This is really great. They also have a reasonable exercise database. You can record what you did and the number or reps or time you spent. I’m trying to stay under 40 carbs and 1200 calories per day. I can change what I’m planning to fix for dinner so that I stay on track. I like that a lot.

For exercise, I’m on my elliptical trainer in the garage most days. I also do careful stretching via yoga, concentrating on trying to convince this old body to RELAX. After all the work I’ve been doing cleaning out my house and working in the yard lately, I find this takes longer and longer. I just hold a pose – breathing into it until I feel my muscles ‘give’ and I’m comfortable. This is helping me feel better. Today I had extra help with that because I enjoyed a wonderful massage! My therapist, Lynn, really listens and does all she can to help me. Today we discovered that most of my sore muscles were on my right side – I guess from all the hauling of Mel’s Mix to the garden. Getting the Lard Off Progress Report – August 3, 2016

In another 2 weeks I will have been eating low carb and exercising for one year.

I’ve lost 46 lbs and 22″.

I’ve run into a hurdle, in that my body is having trouble fully processing fat. I had my gallbladder out several years ago and apparently that adds a challenge. I researched it on the net and found a pill duo that seems to be solving the problem!

I just got an Instant Pot

a 5 quart pressure cooker. It’s supposed to save 70% of cooking time. I’m interested in anything that helps me cook nice meals without staying in the kitchen a lot. I’ll report to you if I find some good low carb recipes in the book I got to go with it.

We cooked burgers on the grill last night. I had a burger, salad, black olives, and green olives while my husband enjoyed a bun, potato salad, cole slaw, beans and some of my salad. Delicious, and low carb!

It would be nice if I could reach 50 lbs off by the time I see my doctor for my quarterly blood test, but if I don’t, I’ll get there in whatever time it takes. The ultimate goal is another 25 pounds off from where I am now. That would put me at a healthy weight for my height. (Hopefully, I’ll quick shrinking or my ‘ultimate’ will have to increase…)

Meanwhile, even with the awful heat and humidity we’re having, my energy level is better than it’s been for years. I feel good and am dreaming of art projects I want to try. :0)
