Fall is Almost Gone

@miya1156.bsky.social

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic about fall in the United States today. In Thailand, there IS no ‘fall.’ There is a ‘cool season,’ where the constant rain finally stops and temperatures drop to a low of 50 and highs in the mid 80s. It was late this year, but officially it’s from November 1st through mid-February.

It’s funny, the temperature is not that cold, but there is no heat in Thailand. The emphasis is rightly on the other 3/4 of the year where cooling is a necessity. 50 degrees with no heat seems cold, and I’m learning to dress in layers, I put the throw Brian got me on my bed, I’m using the water heating unit in the shower now at least a bit, and I heat up hot water to drink.

In Arkansas, the fall was a busy time for us. Our place was a little more than 8 acres of pretty heavy woods on top of a ridge line. Because the summers were hot and dry, the leaves started falling early. I spent days and days raking and blowing leaves, then grinding them up to create mulch for my planters all around the house, and then redistributing the mulch, packing it down to try to protect our plants for the coming winter.

We had a small square foot garden where I grew a lot of veggies for us. In the fall was the time I would finally harvest the last of the veggies, do a final weeding of the special soil I created combining vermiculite, peat moss, and as many different kinds of mulch – including my mulched leaves – as I could to use in place of regular soil. This combination was put in 4’x4′ boxes we made and put on welded frameworks that made the boxes come to about my chest level. We filled the boxes with the soil alternative up to the top to prepare for spring planting, and then covered the boxes with tarps with a tall thing in the center of each one so that ice and snow would drain off. This way of planting kept me from having to bend over double or get down on my hands and knees to tend my plants. We made an irrigation system for the 6 boxes we had and surrounded the whole thing with fencing to keep critters out.

Fall was time to make sure our generator was working well and would come on reliably in the winter when we lost power and needed it. We had a well house where we had piping for both public (city) water and well water. We used well water for things on the outside. We had a propane powered heater in the well house to keep things from freezing up and we lit that in preparation for the winter. We also unhooked the irrigation system we used to water all the plants around the house, drained the LONG hose system we created, and put faucet covers on all the outside faucets.

We mowed one last time and I weed whacked and pruned carefully so that it would look like someone cared. We cut back trees in the driveway on both sides that we thought might fall into the driveway with a winter storm. No matter how much we did, though, it wasn’t enough, and we would have to chain saw our way down our 650 foot driveway to the street below.

We would make sure we had firewood ready to be lit and stored where we could get to it easily. We lit fires in the fireplace more because we loved being able to sit on the hearth and warm our backs, plus see the glow of the fire, rather than really NEEDING the fire for heat, but we had peace of mind having it.

One winter we had no public water and no electricity for 14 days. This made us get really serious about preparing for the winter up there!

All this preparation needed was one of the reasons we decided it was finally too much for us and that we should move to Thailand to retire. We have some fond memories of the fall season, though, in Arkansas when the heat of the summer had finally eased off. We could open doors, air out the house, turn off the a/c, and enjoy spending lots of time outside in the yard, on the screened back porch, on the deck with our pets, and more.

Like the song that says, “Sorry, not sorry,” – I ‘miss it, but don’t miss it.’

The Town Square, Greenwood AR USA

At the very end of March I moved from Greenwood, Arkansas, USA, a lovely little rural town with a population of about 9,730. We lived outside of town on top of a ridge line on 8 acres. It was a beautiful existence, with lots of privacy, lots of room to raise our son, do gardening (though the land was quite rocky), grow flowers, create ‘critters’ from scrap metal in our shop to decorate our yard and long, steep driveway. I created artwork I sold online on my own website and then on Etsy, and started my blog the last several years we lived there.

Now I live in the second largest city in Thailand, Chiang Mai, a city with a population of approximately 1.2 MILLION. Even though we are living in a condo building, there is lots of greenery inside the building, plus everywhere we go!

Chiang Mai Citylife

Not only do Thai people love nature and growing things, they work hard to build AROUND things already growing rather than always scraping off an area so something can be built. This is only one of countless examples. Trees on walkways are carefully supported so they aren’t damaged in any way. Nature comes first and the people live with and around it – cherishing it – rather than the using the popular bulldozers Americans do.

I love looking at things here. Anywhere we go we see beautiful trees. I especially like the flowering trees that bring so much color and warmth to the city. I’ve tried to gather some examples for you here, but I’m barely scratching the surface.

I can’t say enough about how beautiful it is. People with small shops make sure to have thriving plants in front or as a focus of the decorations, bringing the outside in.

If we’re in a Grab, my head seems to be on a swivel, turning, turning, trying to see everything I can during the trip, although Brian has told me that it’s rude to talk while we are being driven somewhere, unless the Grab driver initiates the conversation. I just sit in awe and admire.

SUNNY Thursday 5-9-2024

Andreas Roeth – Pinterest

It’s almost like a ‘wonder-of-the-world’ thing to see the SUN shining this morning. It’s BEAUTIFUL. We came through some really pervasive yellow and red blobs on the TV screen weather warnings of ‘severe thunderstorm warning’ and ‘tornado watch’ with some heavy rain and LOTS of lightning last night, but no damage we’ve found yet. We’re very lucky and very thankful.

Since my energy level has been really low lately, I was happy when our doc saw that my blood test showed that my thyroid replacement hormone dosage was too low. She increased it, so I’ll get another blood test in 6 weeks and we’ll decide if any further increases are needed.

I was expecting my electric meat slicer to be delivered tomorrow. It was just delivered by our wonderful mailwoman today! She is a really nice lady and drives up our driveway as if it isn’t a mess. AND she brought the slicer! I’m going to rearrange things on my counter so it can live and be well-used on a regular basis there. I’m thinking I’ll see if I can order a cover for it, as well.

I MAY have a line on a father/son team who can repair our driveway. I got their name from a friend, plus the name of the chat that is used on streets that my friend said we should put on the driveway.

Today we’ll go to Stu’s Clean Cookin’ in Greenwood to get some frozen dinners. My husband has always liked their dinners, but they didn’t meet our needs a while back, so we stopped going. I discovered last night that they have new low carb offerings that are also quite reasonable on sodium. HOORAY! Soon I’ll be able to cut my intake of salt in my food by at least half, if not more.

I plan to harvest lettuce and spinach from the garden and finish cleaning up in two brick planters today. Then I THINK I’ll be ready to go buy some flowers to plant. :0)

I hope you’re doing well and can make this a very enjoyable day.

I hope this day is starting well for you.

I’ll go out in a bit and harvest some lettuce for my good friend and miracle-worker-hair-stylist, Michael Remillard, Tangles Hair Salon, Greenwood AR (479) 996-6366 to take to him tomorrow when he once again transforms me from looking like a ‘dandelion-gone-to-seed-in-a-storm’ to ‘someone-has-a-plan’ – a difficult feat to be sure.

We’re supposed to have highs in the 80’s here through Thursday and several chances for rain in the coming week, starting today, so that’s good news and bad news for my veggies. The good news is that I should see some good growth in my tomato plants, and I won’t have to water. I’ll need to make sure the tomato supports are adequate or add more, plus prune the plants for the best tomato production I can. The bad news is that these unseasonably warm temperatures in the early spring may cause my lettuce and spinach some grief. I sure don’t want to be faced with them ‘bolting’ at this point!

We’ve enjoyed the first harvest of leaf lettuce in a big chef salad for dinner one night, several other salads, plus some roast beef sandwiches last night. Such a nice luxury. I’m glad to be able to share some with Michael tomorrow.

I’ve done my 10-minute video with weights from Mike, my Australian senior exercise expert, MoreLifeHealth.com, for 2 days now. I can tell you that my arms are ‘feeling’ the exercise, but not so much I can’t do the next day easily. I’m only using 3-pound weights and will do this for the foreseeable future. Then I’ll switch to 5-pound weights. It feels good to be trying to gain strength in my arms. This should help me in getting up off the floor after my yoga stretches, too! :0)

Have some fun today.

Each time the Mega Millions/Power Ball lottery gets to an astronomical amount, we buy $10 worth of tickets. That $10 buys hopes and dreams until the drawing, when they are again dashed. Until the next time. Someone in New Jersey won the 1.1 billion dollar prize – the one that could/should have been ours. :0(

Yesterday there was no hot water when I washed my hair in the kitchen sink as I do each morning. I waited and waited with the water running, then gave up and quickly washed it in the cold, cold water. I told my husband about the problem, but he basically blew me off, asking me if I had run the water. Pffffft! Later on I brought it up again, asking what I was supposed to look for in the basement where our instant hot water heater lives. He told me I should run the water longer. (Urge to kill.) Finally, mid afternoon I asked him again to look at the problem. He basically went down to the basement to make me quit bothering him, finding that there was, indeed, a problem. (Go figure)

It turned out that the battery backup thingie he had put between the main power and the hot water system had failed. When that happened. It turned off the hot water system. When we removed the backup and plugged the system into the main power, everything turned on.

We decided, after a discussion, that since our power almost never went off, and was already backed up by the generator, we didn’t need the backup thingie. We made a note of what humongous battery it needs and stored it.

Vine Pair – (this is similar to what I plan to ask our dirt work guy for for my husband)

My husband FINALLY had the good grace to apologize for blowing me off, suggesting I was ‘forgetting’ to run the water…

Ground was broken around the 1st of this month for the Greenwood Bypass. In the image above, the solid line is the current road and the dotted line is the bypass to be constructed. Two bridges are due to be totally reconstructed, as well as the road. It’s due to be finished – in two phases – by 2026, or so they estimate.

We use the solid road now. It looks like a war zone on both sides of the road now, with downed, broken, and piled up trees, what looks like a rerouting of a creek (yes!) and it’s not clear yet if they’ll finish the dotted part before they close access to the road we use to get to town. This is supposed to relieve congestion through town by people who would prefer to just bypass the square and go on to Ft. Smith or wherever else they would like to go. What worries me is that they’ll cut off access to the east side of Greenwood, where we are. Time will tell.

My veggie garden came through the freeze yesterday just fine and I didn’t have to cover things last night. I checked this morning and all looks good.

Things got busy yesterday due to the hot water issue and time got away from me. I had to hurry to get my yoga practice in before dinner and didn’t get up to my art room. I’m hoping to change that today.

I hope you have a great day.

And the Rain Continues

Unsplash

Today is Lunch Bunch, but my husband and I will probably get stood up, due to various reasons. My husband said it didn’t matter, we’ll go anyway and then get stuff at the store on the way back. There is a 70% chance of rain this morning, this afternoon, and this evening. “Wet” is my natural state much of the day these days, though I try to use an umbrella.

I have one of those nice pop-up ones. That helps some, but it seems I can never get it up and over me before I’m pretty wet. We usually have gusty winds with our rain here, so that is challenging, too. I usually just say, “Okay” (bad words not supplied here), put the umbrella away, and just dry off when I get home.

It’s been so rainy lately that I haven’t been out to check the garden or the tomato plants. Hopefully, there will be a lull in the rain so I can get out and see what’s happening – with fingers crossed.

I hope that your Friday will be a fun one.

Garden Love 1 – 4-30-2023 – Tomatoes

Little Pine Learners

The tomatoes seem to be doing fine. We have this square planter with 4 plants and then a 2nd, 8-foot-long brick planter of tomatoes this year.

This is the same planter as above, farther away so you can see how much taller the plants are than the last pics I took.

This is the 8 foot planter. There are 6 plants in this one.

This close up shows we have some blossoms on one plant!

It’s Friday! 4-28-2023

ebaum’s world

It’s not actively raining right now. We’re supposed to get more tonight and tomorrow. I wonder if I start singing, “Here Comes the Sun” the weather will improve or Mother Nature will send me a tornado to protest.

My husband is feeling enough better this morning and he’s going to come to Lunch Bunch with me for the first time in 3 weeks! Hooray! I’m not sure if we’ll go to the grocery after that or not yet. We’ll play it by ear, depending on how he’s doing.

When we get back, if it’s not raining I’ll get out and check on my veggie boxes and tomato planters to see how the sweet plants are. I’ll try to take some pics to share.

Nothing big planned for today, but it’s celebration mode that my husband is feeling a bit better. :0)

GOOD/BAD NEWS – Most of my hard work for the day is done. I plan to relax, cool off, and do my yoga stretches this afternoon to un-kink my sore, creaky body, then take a nice shower before bed.

We gathered the trash this morning and that will go out tomorrow. I just finished vacuuming the first floor tiles and carpet. The carpeted area includes the foyer, our office, and our living room. The tiled areas include the pantry, kitchen area between the living room an the dining area, the utility room, and two half baths.

I had to switch to my larger vacuum when my battery-powered one died after using up the half hour’s worth of cleaning you get on a full charge. Even with the air conditioning on, I’m slightly out of breath, having to wipe my head, face, and neck with paper towels, and am drinking lots of ice water.

I’m appalled at all I pick up in the vacuum canister. Even my husband is impressed when I show him the trash can into which I empty the canister each time I finish vacuuming. I honestly am amazed that we still HAVE a dog and cat with all the hair I vacuumed. And then there’s the pollen and dirt that blows in every time the doors open… I’m glad I have good cleaning tools, but it almost gives me nightmares how MUCH ‘stuff’ that comes up. :0(

I don’t think a team of experts coming in every day to clean our house could keep up with all of this.

We think we may have come to the end of the “nursery” of raccoons we have relocated this year so far. We’ve continued to set the humane trap, but haven’t caught anyone in several days now. My husband even refilled the bird feeders again for the first time in a long time yesterday.

I’m planning to check my garden later this afternoon, when the heat has decreased a bit. I’ll see if I can get pics. We’re hoping to have some ripe tomatoes, too, in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed.

Cycles

We turned off our irrigation system to the yard, and the one to the garden a few weeks ago because of threatened freezes. It always makes me a bit sad because things start to wilt almost immediately when we do.

Our elephant ear plants did really well this year, giving us many hours of pleasure. They are looking quite sad right now. As soon as they are completely down, leaves brown and hanging down, I’ll cut them off as close to the soil surface as possible and lay thick layers of mulch as tightly as I can to see if they’ll over winter in place this time, as digging them up and storing them in the garage in peat moss last year was unsuccessful.

We had kind of a weird growing season this time. Our lettuce did well, giving us lots of nice salads. Our spinach was nice, too. Then things warmed up really quickly, causing all my spring garden to bolt at once. We had nice tomatoes, but due to the weather changes, they weren’t ‘pretty’ this year. Thankfully, our stomachs don’t care about that a bit! :0) This is the way we winter over our raised bed, square foot garden. I carefully weeded, then topped off the 4’x4′ wooden boxes with fresh Mel’s Mix (peat moss, vermiculite, and 3 kinds of compost (I used mushroom, barnyard, and cotton). Hopefully, I won’t have a whole lot to do to prepare the boxes for planting in the spring. I’m already itching to get the plants in as soon as they are available.

I’m going to start getting serious about pruning flower planters and readying things for winter very soon.

“Dandelion Wishes” -Dick van Dujin Photography via Penny Yaffe Krakow

About 20 minutes ago the sky was really dark, even though it was about 9:30 a.m.  It looked like we were in for quite a storm. Now it’s gray and sprinkling, but it looks like the ‘storm’ blew past us. Whew!

Things are pretty much back to normal again after my glorious marathon birthday celebration, although my husband surprised me after errands yesterday by taking me to The Dari to share a seafood platter for lunch! I’m am TOTALLY spoiled at this point, have a big head – since my family and friends made me feel so special – and have become insufferable. I have a bathroom to scrub upstairs today, so that should bring me down to Earth a bit. :0)

Seriously – (and I’m going to show my advanced age now) – I have felt like the winner on the old “Queen for a Day” cheesy TV program from a hundred years or so ago where some woman was showered with wonderful things from friends, family, and the show, making her, her family, and ME cry.  I just searched and found an actual show from 1963 on YouTube

So now I’m concentrating on getting back to my normal, happy self after a tear-worthy celebration that I’m still alive, kicking, and still hard to live with.

As fears concerning the coronavirus rise, I want to share some facts from the CDC website that are helping ME keep things in perspective so far – As of today, March 11th, there are 1016 confirmed cases and 31 deaths in the United States.  The numbers will continue to rise, adding to the tension. ALSO, though, according to the CDC website, so far in 2020, there have been 34,000+ cases and 20,000+ deaths from the REGULAR STRAIN OF THE FLU.

The cautions to prevent infections for both are the same. People 60 and over, particularly those with underlying health conditions, should avoid large crowds as much as possible. We should all wash our hands and try not to touch our faces. (Not touching my face is apparently a HUGE one for me. I never realized how MUCH I scratch my face, pull on my nose, rub my eyes, etc. I saw a picture of a man wearing one of the huge plastic collars they put on animals that keep them from licking a wound, suggesting that might be a good thing to use. :0)  I may actually have to DO that – or wear mittens.

What I’m saying doesn’t ally all the fear, but hopefully it brings some perspective. Hopefully the FDA won’t throw up all the roadblocks they normally do, causing horrible delays in getting a possible vaccine to the public. Maybe there will be a waiver one can sign in order to get the possible protection. One can hope. If you are in the risk group, as my husband and I are, pay attention and be smart.

I’ll share some pics I took of the garden with you as soon as the battery on my camera charges up again. I am on the ‘sealing stage’ on a new design of wooden earrings. I’ll share some pics of those, too, if possible, later today.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Spring Day

Twisted Copper Creations

The sun is trying to come out, but it’s mostly smothered by lots and lots of gray clouds. The temperature is 49 and it’s NOT raining, so I’m declaring it’s a nice day. My husband and I are getting ready to leave for errands, and I’ll try to get pics of my garden to share with you when we get back.

Things are getting back to normal around here after my lovely multi-day birthday celebration. I’m on the verge of having a big head and becoming insufferable, so it’s a good thing that I have a chores list as long as my arm today. :0)

I’ve told you before that our son lives and works in Thailand. He is looking now to change from renting an apartment in town to finding a house in the country. He wants to be able to create music loudly without bothering anyone. Trying to play with earphones on all the time wears on your soul, so I’m hoping he finds a good place soon. He would like to find one by the end of April. Fingers crossed.

I hope that YOU are having a good day, too.
