Sarcasm Lives Here

My dad considered a sense of humor a survival skill. His left arm and hand were crippled when he fell off a horse when he was three. He learned to do everything with one arm and hand, including taking great care of his family. He survived the taunting and cruelty shown him at school by making them laugh. It worked. Everyone liked him because he saw things through very creative, sensitive eyes and always added a humorous twist.

When he would compliment my dress, though, it meant my dress was too short, too ‘something,’ and he wanted me to change. It took me years to NOT look in someone’s eyes when they compliment me, looking for the ‘dig.’ I have learned to just enjoy it and say a grateful, “Thank you!”

I loved listening to his stories. He would have me rolling on the floor laughing by the end of some of them. There was one he told of he and his friends going camping by the river one night. None of them had the first idea of how to ‘camp,’ though my dad and one of his friends helped with a boy scout group. They prepared for bed, getting out sleeping bags, etc. One man started digging a hole. He explained he would use it to make sleeping more comfortable, measuring it carefully to mold to his butt. The others followed, thinking it sounded like a great idea. They all settled in for the night. Suddenly, one of the men started cursing – finally getting up and moving his sleeping bag, saying angrily, “I sleep on my STOMACH!”

My healthy sense of humor has saved my sanity my whole life. Sometimes it allows me to stand back and see a situation as if it were a movie, and I’m able to see the humor in it. Many times I laugh when it is really not a good or appropriate thing to do. I got in trouble at school because a friend and I would lock eyes and then simply collapse with laughter. Even now, I avoid eye contact when I’m amused and it is NOT the time to laugh. DON’T LOOK AT ME! :0)

SPECIAL DAY –

My husband is having a birthday tomorrow. He doesn’t want to TALK about it, DO anything about it, or even THINK about it. Last year he was hyped because turning “80” had panache. 81 is simply old. I think you can FEEL him frowning. I’ll just try to make his day as pleasant as possible and let it go at that.

BUILDING HABITS WITH INTENTION – My idea of exercising with my 3-pound weights in-between blog posts, or other activities on the computer is working well. I stop often, doing a good set of exercises right beside my computer with the weights, then put them down on the counter and get back to my computer. I did this 5 times yesterday, getting in a good amount of exercise during the day.

I’m rounding this out with my yoga stretches, even though Monster Cat has decided that I’m teasing her by getting down on the floor on the mat. She crawls under the end of the mat, then leaps out and attacks my foot, then dashes under the mat again. Yesterday I brought my foot down on top of her, letting her know that I didn’t appreciate her efforts while I was trying to relax.

She retaliated later by jumping into the empty cardboard box we usually keep for her in the middle of the floor. (I put it up on the sofa when I’m doing my yoga.) She played around in it and then attempted to jump out of it and pulled the whole box down with her to the floor – on top of my head and outstretched arms. My husband died laughing, but did retrieve the box and move it to the foyer, enticing her to follow him so I could finish my stretching.

When the weather is cooperative, I take at least a couple of walks during the day, out to the shop and around the yard, sometimes with pruning shears in my hand. This combination of weights, yoga, and walking is making me feel as if I’m doing a good thing for this old body.

Question –

My_Careee – Pinterest

I love phrases for which there are no opposites, like this one. “Losing my mind,” is another one that comes to mind. Word games, plays on words, puns, sarcasm – they all make our language a delightful surprise, bring a smile to our faces and lighten our moods. :0)

I really feel lucky to have grown up speaking English. I tried to learn Spanish when I was in school. I even was lucky enough to stay in Mexico City with a family who was a part of my dad’s community club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The girl had spent a month or so in our home, and this particular family wanted to return the favor – so I was the beneficiary. I got so I could understand if people spoke very slowly, and I could reply, if haltingly, kind of like a young child, but that was the best I could do.

I don’t know how someone learns English. There are so many quirky things about it. Very few rules that aren’t broken randomly. A whole different language when you throw in phrases and slang, puns, jokes, homonyms, etc.

I threw the ball through the window. Are you through? is just one example of why it’s probably impossible to really learn English well unless you grown up with it as your first, if only, language.
