Mother Nature Makes Harvesting a Challenge

First thing this morning I went out to harvest some lettuce so I could take it to Lunch Bunch and share some with Linda, Kay, and the two waitresses at The Pizza Barn, Susan and Mikey. I knew we had rain forecast for today, but it looked like it might hold off until we could share lunch at the picnic table in the parking lot before it started.

I brought the lettuce in and dumped it all into the sink. 45 minutes later, I had several small heads of lettuce and a lot of extra lettuce leaves ready to put in bags.

About an hour ago, Kay called, telling me the forecast now said we would get at least two waves of storms – each possibly severe – with hail. We agreed to call off Lunch Bunch for today.  :0(

I let Amber into the truck and we went down the driveway to get the mail. Just as we pulled into the garage after getting it, the rain started. We haven’t had hail yet, but it’s obvious we are in for the day now.  The sky is dark, almost like night. The garage door is shut to protect our vehicles.

Now we appreciate being able to stay inside a warm, dry house and hope that we JUST get rain today.

Friendship

Last fall my friend, Laufrain, dug up her elephant ear plants to winter over until the spring. She gave me TWO of them! I put them in our dining area on the floor and held my breath that I could keep them alive until I could give them a home on our front porch in the spring.

Two days ago I moved them to the front porch. I left them in their original pots because I want to be able to bring them in again – assuming they live – when it’s time for them to winter over. We are not planting our usual impatiens this year, unless things change on the pandemic, so I thought the elephant ear would look nice, be at least a little protected from wind and possible hail here, and hopefully be healthy, happy plants.

Wonderful Marathon Birthday Celebration

When you are my age, the more celebration the better.  (I will be 73 on Monday, March 9th.)

My friends at Lunch Bunch made me feel really special yesterday and I’m still grinning.

When we walked into the Pizza Barn, this was one of the things on the table –

I put them in the center of our dining table so that my husband and I can enjoy them together. The first thing he said at breakfast this morning was, “These are lovely.”

My lunch was free.

Conversation, laughter, and hugs from long-time friends. (we have been meeting every Friday for Lunch Bunch for almost 19 years now – a true gift.)

My husband and I indulged in hot dogs with BUNS and Fritos last night for dinner – I haven’t had those – or the cake – in over a year now.

And Monday my husband is taking me for a lobster tail lunch at Red Lobster – a celebration of another year of life, PLUS having over 1400 subscribers to my blog now.

Debbye

This is just one of the groups of happy daffodils in our yard right now. They have exploded in bloom over the last couple of weeks – freezes or not. This is my favorite group, though. It looks kind of like a ‘daffodil bouquet’ on the edge of our yard before a group of rocks marks the edge of the ‘civilized’ part of our front yard.

 

This is “Debbye” – my good friend who got me into trying to paint, to create things as I have always wanted to do.

She died of breast cancer many years ago. She was sitting on her bed painting a watercolor of a hummingbird (now on the wall of our stairway) when I went to visit one day. I hugged her, then silently watched her paint for a few minutes. Finally, I said, “I WISH I could do that!”

She got angry with me – for the first and the last time in our friendship. She said, “What the Hell are you waiting for? YOU have the time. What do you care if your work never makes it off your own refrigerator door? JUST DO IT!!!!!”  She changed my life that day.

At her funeral there were two large barrels on either side of the entry to the church. We were asked to grab a double handful of daffodil bulbs as we left and plant them as a reminder of Debbye. I planted mine in a clump by the rocks where they would be at least a little bit protected. Before each spring starts, the greenery shoots up, full of life and energy, and then Debbye blooms once again.

We would all have our memories of Debbye and her indomitable spirit without the bulbs, but I loved the idea at her funeral and have never heard of it being done before or since.  A lovely way to remember a smart, creative, and lovely lady.

Thoughts on A Friday 2-28-2020

We just put Taz up on our mailbox this morning on the way to Lunch Bunch. The Tazmanian Devil is one of our favorites.  It’s funny the way our designs have differed over the years. This one seems small and light, particularly compared to the Snow-Goon we just took down and stored in the shop. This one is only about 2 feet tall, where the Snow-Goon is almost 4.

bought a couple of pairs of earrings I was listing on my Etsy site. They were delivered yesterday. I was so happy she liked them. Then she did THIS –

on Facebook. I’m STILL grinning and dancing. What a NICE, generous thing for her to do!  She is a representative of Paparazzi Jewelry – FUN pieces that I can’t resist. I buy things from her all the time. She couldn’t do a better job of responding, filling your order, shipping, etc.

We had our normal wonderful time at Lunch Bunch. We look forward to catching up, good food, good conversation, laughs, and good hugs.

One of our errands was at Walmart. On the way out to our truck, there was a crowd. A person was down in the parking lot. We stopped, asking if there were anything we could do, but they told us an ambulance was on its way. My heart goes out to the person in distress, but I was happy that so many people stopped what they were doing to try to help.

It is a bit after 2 pm here. The sun is shining and it’s 55 degrees F. here!  What a lovely day – and it’s still February!! I’m going to go out and visit my veggie plants and walk around the yard. What a treat!

Thoughts on a Friday 1-10-2020

Soul Alchemy

I’m really sad about the loss of animal life in Australia. People are trying to save as many as possible, and I’m grateful for that. My heart goes out to the people who have lost so much.

We are getting ready to go to Lunch Bunch, our weekly lunch with long-time, treasured friends. It will be good to be out, especially because we are due for some severe weather later today – high wind, chance of tornadoes, strong wind, hail, heavy rain, and flying hair balls. It’s supposed to start at 2 and last throughout the night, changing to sleet tomorrow. I’m about to suggest dances and songs for Mother Nature – trying to get on her good side…

I had a nice online chat with our son in Thailand yesterday. I always feel so good after talking with him. The fact we can type back and forth whenever we would like makes me almost forget he’s half a world away. :0)

I’m trying a new keto bread recipe this afternoon. Fingers crossed!

Thoughts on A Saturday – 1-4-2020

Beautiful World

I told you yesterday that I learned a good, long-time friend of mine had died. Since then, I have heard from MANY friends locally and online, giving me kind words of consolation. I’m a very, very lucky person to know so many wonderful people. Thank you. It means a lot.

I spent time with MORE friends at Lunch Bunch yesterday. As usual, we shared what had happened since the last Friday, our plans, plus stories, hugs, and lots of laughter.  The daughter of one of my friends joined us from Fort Smith, so it was an especially nice gathering. We have been meeting every Friday for over 17 years now. There is no way to express how wonderful it is to have shared our lives, Friday by Friday, through good times and bad. Priceless.

This morning has been a character-building exercise for me. Our animals are conspiring to drive me crazy, one incident at a time. I can almost hear them laughing as they watch me mutter and handle the next thing, over and over. One example –

‘someone’ – whose name is probably Amber, our 94-pound yellow lab – apparently ‘nosed’ the small pile of firewood we had on the hearth, causing everything to tumble down onto the carpet, spreading debris everywhere. I started picking up pieces, then used a brush and dustpan, then a whisk broom, and finally the vacuum, to finally get the area cleaned up and back together again.  “Someone” else – probably named Molly (our elderly cocker spaniel/schnauzer cross) and Abby, one of our cats – caused me to also vacuum the hallway, two half-baths, the dining area, the kitchen, the pantry, and the utility room because of tufts of animal hair playing in the breezes. (The fact that I JUST vacuumed all that YESTERDAY makes me think they are smuggling in some other animal to shed an ‘entire animal’ each and every day…)

I’m having lots of fun in my art room.

I’m hoping to play in my art room more today, unless the animals come up with yet another mess for me to clean up.

A Beautiful Person

I had a feeling.  The feeling was stronger when I didn’t get a Christmas card.  Today her husband answered the email I sent, telling me we had lost her.

She was 6 years younger than I. She was my intern teacher a long time ago when I was teaching in the Tulsa Public Schools. She became my partner in the Reading Clinic I started when I finally gave up on the school system. We ran it for three years, teaching kindergarten through adult, helping many people together. She was my friend.

She traveled to Austin, Texas, married, and worked full time, so our busy lives made it so we didn’t communicate as much as we would have liked. Ours was the kind of friendship where we would talk – after not communicating much for a long time – and take up right where we left off, as if we hadn’t been apart.

She was a caring, pretty, SWEET lady. I loved her. A light is now gone from our world. I’m lucky I got to share that light for a little while.

Thoughts on a Friday 12-27-2019

I’m especially happy today.

I’m excited about sharing a booth in a local shop with one of my best friends. It’s fun to see what sells, to plan what I want to add to the shop, to make new things for it. The owner of the shop is Joanna Brandt, and the shop’s name is Rags & Roses Collective. She has divided the shop into booths so that lots of people in the area have a chance to show and sell their wares. Our booth is called, “Blasing Bright.”  I have a group of new things to put in our booth today. The shop will be open today until 5:00, I think. Then Joanna will take a well-deserved vacation and will reopen Jan. 6th.

My family is doing well.

We will go to Lunch Bunch soon, joining our good friends for conversation and laughs.  It’s good to be able to share the good times (and help each other with the bad) as we watch one year turn into another.

My new shop – EyecatchingEarrings on Etsy – is coming together. I’m hoping to have it fully up and running by the end of the weekend, though the shop is open for business now. :0)

I hope you had a happy Christmas and that 2020 will be a wonderful year for you.

Nice Christmas

We are enjoying a quiet Christmas this year. We have spent the last few days taking presents to good friends and visiting and that has been wonderful.  We only have one remaining, but our friend is out of town now, so we’ll catch up with her when she returns.

 

I have a teeny tiny CUTE turkey breast I’ll cook for us on Christmas Day.  We’ll also have deviled eggs, dressing, and cranberry sauce.

I’m grateful that we are both healthy enough to enjoy this holiday together.

Thoughts on a Sunday 12-22-2019

And we have water pressure!

After two days of non-stop work, we enjoyed nice hot showers with reasonable pressure last night! We had two big blowouts twice when we were doing a last ‘tightening up’ to stop a couple of drips, so we declared victory the third time and left the drips going. We would like to increase the pressure a bit more, but will wait to do it until we have the leaks stopped. I have called our plumber, who has agreed to come out after Christmas ( We told him this was not an emergency.)  We are hoping it will be a quick job for him and a final fix for us. Meanwhile, we’ll monitor things in the well house for any big problems.  Ahhhhhh!

Today will be a happy day for us. We’ll go grocery shopping and stop off at a friend’s house to check on them and take a present or two. Later this afternoon, I’ll do it again with another friend. :0)

Otherwise, we will do a lot of resting.

Bowling and Bonuses

We went bowling last night with our good friends, the Taylors, last night.

It doesn’t matter how well (or how badly) we bowl. We do it for the fun of it, the good exercise, the chance to catch up with our good friends, AND a trip to Braum’s afterwards for a scoop of ice cream.

BONUS # 1 – Last night was especially fun. There was a good-looking young man with 4 kids of varying ages bowling next to us. The children looked to be Asian and were great-looking children. The two boys looked to be in their teens. The girls were younger. As we bowled, I couldn’t help but melt into a puddle at the youngest girl. She had a gorgeous smile that appeared often. I clapped when she got a spare and she lit up like a Christmas tree. She would smile at me when I managed to throw a good ball, too. The man had taught the kids bowling etiquette, so it was a pleasure to be next to them.

After awhile, the man came over to us and said that he wanted us to know that his kids were impressed with our bowling. This was a shock because we really weren’t doing that well, although we had gotten a few strikes, and – more notably – picked up a few difficult spares.  He said the kids were always on their phones. He had taken them to the Grand Canyon, and couldn’t get them to even look out the window at the wonderful sight because they were glued to their devices. But they were impressed with us!

We told him that his kids – two of the four – and his niece and nephew – were beautiful children and we were impressed at how well behaved they were.  They were here for Thanksgiving, and he had taken them bowling to get them out of the house.  :0)  A total pleasure to bowl next to them and talk with them.

BONUS # 2 –  After a joyful trip to Braum’s for ice cream, we took our friends back to their home. They said they had something for us. They went inside and came back out with TWO gorgeous elephant ear plants for us to take home!

Laufrain told us to put them in the garage to winter over, but we elected to try to keep them alive in our dining area and then – if successful – we’ll put them on our front porch in the spring so they’ll be protected from too much wind.

Thoughts on a Saturday 11-23-2019

I have finished up some new things using the Unicorn Spit Stain/Glaze and wanted to show them to you.

The Greenwood Arkansas Holiday Open House is tomorrow afternoon from 1 – 5. I’m volunteering to help in Rags & Roses, 100 North Main, the shop where I am sharing a booth with my good friend, Carla, doing whatever I can to make it go as smoothly as possible.  I’m looking forward to meeting people.  There will be food, Santa photos, a musician playing the guitar/fiddle/mandolin, door prizes, and lots of wonderful stuff to consider buying for the holidays. FUN!

I am now looking forward to Thanksgiving. I have asked a dear friend to eat with us.  My husband will be delighted to hear that she is bringing apple pie!  All thoughts of diet are thrown to the winds. We will gleefully chow down, filling our bellies with delicious stuff and enjoying catching up with my good friend I haven’t seen in far too long. :0)

We Have a Booth!

The name of our booth is “Blasing Bright” – a combination of part of the last names of my friend Carla and her former partner.  It’s a small booth, but in a good location in the shop of booths called, “Rags & Roses.”  100 N Main St, Greenwood, AR 72936, (479) 597-3107.  The owner is Joanna Brandt, a truly lovely, intelligent, energetic lady.  The hours of Rags & Roses are Tuesday – Friday, 11:00 -6:00, and Saturday, 10:00 until 4:00.

 

Carla and I arranged, rearranged, then decorated a bit for Christmas, then rearranged again before we found what we thought looked the best. Carla is one of my best friends, a joy to work with. We caught up with what’s been going on, shared lots of laughs and hugs.

I’m taking another group of things today and then will keep all appendages crossed that we both get some nice sales.  I’m really excited to have this opportunity to try to sell my work locally, all year ’round.

Thoughts on a Friday 11-8-2019

Summer is finally over here in Arkansas. I was beginning to wonder for a while if it would be perpetual!  It’s crisp and brisk, with a definite nip in the air this morning – at 37 degrees F. The sun is shining and it’s a beautiful fall day.

Today will be a happy day for me.

We will leave for Lunch Bunch soon – an every Friday brunch/lunch with good friends we’ve been enjoying for over 17 years now. The core bunch, Linda, Kay and I, has been expended to include my husband, and Kay’s recently, with others joining us from time to time, such as sons, daughters, grandchildren, and other good friends. It’s a time to catch up, share what has happened – or is going to happen, our hopes, dreams, failures, happy and sad things – knowing we support each other. A very special group that means the world to me.

When we return from Lunch Bunch, I’ll pack the truck again with things I’ll display in my good friend, Carla’s, booth in a local shop. We went together yesterday to look at things, bouncing ideas off each other, grabbing some supplies from a couple of places and finally sharing some tea and good conversation. I will pick her up this afternoon and we’ll go add my stuff to what is now OUR shop!  She has already paid the rental fee for November, so I’ll pay for December. I’ll share pics of the shop and some other details with you later.

When I come home again from adding to our shop, I’ll do my elliptical trainer and yoga for the day, chores around the house, etc., and catch up with my husband and our pets, enjoying a quiet evening together.

Thoughts on a Thursday 11-7-2019

Beautiful World

I have to admit I’m still very disappointed to have learned that the wonderful order – and payment – for 40 plaques turned out to be a fraud. I’m grateful that our only loss was the joy of such a wonderful order and the chance to fulfill it. We were very lucky.  I’m disappointed to have met someone who tried to hurt us. I always believe that people are good – until they show me they aren’t.

I’m very grateful to my husband, who – although believing the order was a scam from the first – offered to help me make plaques when I returned from the bank – before I told him that it was confirmed to be a scam. He’s definitely a keeper.

Since wonderful things can happen any time, my good friend Carla called yesterday to check on my husband and me – AND to make me an offer! She is renting a booth in one of our local shops and wanted to know if I wanted to bring some of my work to sell!  She also offered me the chance to go in 50/50 with her!  I’m thrilled. My husband and I are planning to visit the shop today and then I’ll call Carla back. They have a website, so I checked it out and found some really nice pictures and stellar reviews from people. I’m thinking that I will at least go 50/50 with her until the holidays are over, giving me a good chance to see if my work will sell or not. Isn’t life – and the friendship of dear people – amazing?!?

I finished listing my flat wooden Christmas ornaments on ArtFire. I’ll do another post to show you some of the ornaments. :0)

It’s raining again today, but it doesn’t seem like we received the downpours the weather people were forecasting.

Since my ego was smashed yesterday with the confirmation of the scam, I didn’t exercise at ALL, actually getting under my throw in my recliner and taking a nap. We went to get fried rice for dinner – a definite no-no for both of us, but SO delicious – AND I ate some ice cream before bed. Needless to say, my back and the scales were both letting me have it loudly this morning, so I will get back on the horse and be good again now that the pity party is finished. :0)

The Best Kind of Gift

I won the lottery on Sisters-in-law – sorry, I got her first!  We email every day, sharing what’s happening, what we’re hoping for, supporting each other whenever necessary, etc. She is truly a special lady, and we are FRIENDS as well as in-laws.

She let me know a package was coming for me. It arrived yesterday. It’s not my birthday. It’s not Christmas, or any other day that would even suggest a gift. It’s the most special type of gift – one chosen just because they thought of you when they saw it and thought you might enjoy it.

BOY – did she NAIL it!

 

 

 

This is called Unicorn Spit!  I had never heard of it. It’s a paint/glaze that you dilute with water and paint and layer it on glass, wood, and more to get all kinds of glorious effects with dazzling super bright colors. You can mix them, too, and spray your work while still wet to add another color and see what happens on the piece. I’ve bookmarked a YouTube demonstration (isn’t YouTube the best thing?) so I can watch people who know what they’re doing and discover many of the possibilities.

A gift given for no reason other than they hope you enjoy it. THANKS AGAIN, ML.  I can’t wait to make time to go play!!!!!!

Thoughts on A Friday 9-13-2019

We are about to go to Lunch Bunch – our every Friday brunch/lunch with long-time good friends to enjoy sharing what has happened since LAST Friday, what is coming up, good news, bad news, lots of hugs and laughter. We have done this for some 17 years now and our friendship is priceless. Our son will go with us today, so it will be even more special.

I’m thankful for what should be a quiet day – a treasured thing now.

A couple of hours have passed. Our Internet keeps going down, so I gave up and we went to Lunch Bunch. We had a great time. We’ve now replenished groceries and I’m again trying to get a post off before the net goes down again. Challenging, to say the least.

Monday Morning

“Innocent Sounds” – Alina Ciuciu

I love Alina’s painting for several reasons –

The subject, colors, and texture speak to me.

My reaction to the painting was to melt into a puddle. It is so SWEET.

It also speaks of the many sides of friendship.  On any given subject, in any given situation, some will share a similar thing that happened to them; some feel the need to give advice; some will comfort; some will listen; some will simply be there with you for support. I value each and every one.

Lunch Bunch

It would be NICE if the Lunch Bunch gruesome threesome actually were this young and were actually at the beach, but we’re grateful for what we can get. :0)

This is closer to what we ACTUALLY look like, but it’s what’s in your heart that counts. :0)

Today will be a special Lunch Bunch because, besides the three of us and my husband – who pretends to preside over his ‘harem,’ sitting at one end of the table, Kay’s daughter, LaDonna, is visiting from Albuquerque, and Kay’s husband is taking the week off from work – a VERY unusual thing – so it will be even more fun that usual!

We’ve had severe weather this week, with our friend Linda the closest to the actual tornado that touched down. I don’t think any of us had any damage, although another friend of mine lost a maple tree in her back yard.

So we’ll celebrate being together, being alive, and feeling feisty today!

I hope that YOU are weathering the storms, tornados, wind damage, flooding, and flying hairballs well, too. My heart goes out to all the people who are having to pick up the pieces, trying to put things back together.

Grateful

 

 

I felt I was ‘alone,’ – the last of my original family when my brother died this week. I have since learned that I am NOT alone due to wonderful friends who have reached out to me in various ways. “Thank you” is simply not enough, and I’m grateful to each of you.

Glorious Day!

The sun is shining brightly today after several days of rain, chances of severe weather – (sleet, hail, flying hairballs) – and gloom. It’s cold today, but the sunshine is bringing up my spirits.

My husband and I are getting ready to go to Lunch Bunch, our weekly meal with long-time good friends, Kay and Linda. Sometimes others join us, but this is the core group. We catch up on what has happened the past week, what is going on in town (Kay and Linda usually are in the know), and what is coming up for each of us.

My husband describes Kay and Linda as ‘good ole hides,’ his highest compliment about women. This description includes women who are interesting, gutsy, down to earth people you can rely on, real friends. He was allowed into this formerly all women gathering as an honored member several years ago – as long as he behaves.  :0)

We share news, good and bad; try to support and help each other through the bad stuff. We celebrate the good things, laugh a lot, and have grown to love each other almost as sisters over the years.

Lunch Bunch is one of the high points of our week – a core of caring.
