Dealing with banks in Thailand is an interesting challenge.
When I first moved here, I couldn’t open a bank account at all. I needed to have lived here for 3 months and obtained a ‘Retirement Visa’.
Once you HAVE that, each bank has different requirements. They ALL require my retirement visa stamp on my passport, but then they vary all over the place.
Proof of residence, title, deed, driver’s license, social security number from the U.S., is just the beginning.
It’s truly amazing to me that what will obtain an account at one institution isn’t acceptable at another. The amount of paperwork is amazing, as well. It’s almost as much as we needed to buy our house 40 years ago…
Thank GOODNESS Brian goes with me, speaking Thai, answering questions, translating, telling me what I need to do next, bringing paperwork, etc.
Makes me feel pretty secure once it’s done.
