Good Girl!

Country Living Magazine

I am such a GOOD GIRL!

I’m still patting myself on the head because yesterday I

  • FINISHED getting our tax stuff together and organized, with spreadsheets printed. (We need to wait for one thing to print and then we can dump this stuff on our CPA).
  • Added some file folders that I was missing this time to the file drawers where I keep receipts
  • Started new online spreadsheets for 2024
  • Listed the information from January on them
  • Filed everything
  • Balanced checkbooks

While I’m busy telling you this, I have to also admit that my desk, otherwise, looks like an explosion, AND I’m going to be gathering lots of stuff from upstairs to put in the trash. Sometimes I’m a bit of a hoarder – in the interest of stocking up for getting snowed or iced in, of course – and every once in a while I need to purge. This is one of those times. I’m going to start upstairs in our master bath, since I’ve completely emptied out the area under my lavatory and the area around our toilet for when our plumber will hopefully come in the coming week. My plan is to act like I’m moving and get really serious about what I NEED up there. Wish me luck, please.

WEEK 2 – today marks 2 weeks since my husband fell. Wednesday will be the first time he’s been out since I took him to the orthopedic surgeon. Our driveway is bumpy, so that will probably be painful for him. He really wants to get a haircut, so the trip is necessary for him. He improves each day, thankfully. The surgeon said it will take 10 to 12 weeks for healing.

HAIRCUT – I now feel more confident about leaving him alone for a bit when needed. I have a haircut scheduled the day after his. Plus, I scheduled a much-needed massage for the month.

I hope that the weather where you are is either something you can enjoy, or something you can put up with. It’s rainy here, but I’m reminding myself (1) it’s NOT snowing, and (2) it’s NOT icing, so NO COMPLAINTS, though I said some grumpy words when I took Amber out for her last outing of the night last night. :0)

“Bit by a Dead Bee”

pearlsofpromiseministries.com

I know that this title was one of the episodes of Breaking Bad on TV, but my parents were using the term when I was growing up in the dark ages, so I think the TV folks borrowed it. My parents used it to describe frenzied behavior of any type, and I use it here in the same way.

I have definitely been ‘bit by a dead bee,” in that I’ve done more cleaning out and re-organizing around my house than I’ve done in years. I don’t know WHICH dead bee bit me, but I’m thinking of marking this period of behavior totally unlike me on my calendar. it’s so rare.

It started before Thanksgiving, when I was running the bulldozer trying to get the house at least marginally presentable for our friend Nora to come share Thanksgiving dinner with us. I cleaned off the usual really piled up areas, and then I was ‘bit.’ I have been feeling the need to get rid of ‘stuff,’ either by donating it, throwing it away, or deciding where it should live. In each step MORE things that have been sorely neglected pop up to say, “And what have you done for ME lately?”

For the past day or two, the focus has been on my desk. I have a roll top wooden desk that we bought 35 years or so ago. Since having this house built in 1987,  I have put things INTO the drawers, but then they get lost in the shuffle, never to be seen again – until now.

I love my desk. It has a nice flat space for working with a tray type center drawer underneath and then three drawers on either side. Two of the drawers on the sides are small and two are file cabinet type drawers. At the top of each side, right under the flat part of the desk, are two pull-out pieces for extra writing space. Above the flat part of the desk there are two reasonable-sizes drawers, one on each side. Above each of these are three small drawers then between them, going across the desk are slots. Above that, is the roll top which I can pull down, if I’d like. (Usually, there is so much ‘stuff’, it isn’t possible to close it. I just love the roll top for its looks.)

So – 7 drawers under the flat part of the desk, 8 above the flat part, 2 shelves, and 7 slots. That’s a LOT of space for someone like me to squirrel away goodies and stuff for a long time, ignoring the buildup.

I have finished cleaning out the drawers now and am concentrating on the flat part of the desk which has received stuff I’d like to keep, but either put away in the now clean drawers, move somewhere else, or give away. I’ve filled a big trash can, too.

I think it was definitely due some attention. I’ll take pics when it’s finished.

Last of the Flowers?

I have one more hydrangea plant to prune before filling the planter with mulch, but I’m pretty sure this is the last of the blooms for the year. I gathered the twice-blooming iris so that we could enjoy them inside. (These usually bloom in April and October – I’m not sure what’s happening this year, but I’ll sure take it.

Today I’m going to see if I can finish cleaning out the planters and getting them ready to mulch. I have 5 left to clean out – three 8-foot planters and two small, tall planters on each side of the front porch. I’m hoping I have enough mulch to finish filling things up.

I’ll prepare pots for the elephant ear and Purple Passion plants, digging them up carefully and putting them in the greenhouse. If it gets too cold in there over the winter, I won’t have lost anything, since I would have dug up the bulbs after the freezes got them and stored them in peat moss in the garage. I’m hoping it won’t get too cold in there. I’m filling lots of small jugs with water and hoping the sun will warm them each day and they will keep the plants warm at night. We’ll see. Fingers crossed!

Have a wonderful day!

Is There Such a Thing as Too Many Books?

Goodwill Librarian via Cathy Ruggiero

Goodwill Librarian via Cathy Ruggiero

I think I’m about halfway finished with my moving books project. I moved most of the books I had in the office up to the built-in shelves in the guest room. I put some up for sale on Amazon. I piled some on the table in the foyer to bag up to donate to our local library next week for their next fundraiser.

Today I’m moving art books into the guest room shelves. This will free up shelves in the living room, art room, and master bedroom. (I know. I have a lot of books.)

The problem with the art books is that when I try to go through them, I get hooked, wanting to take my time, savor the artwork, or put the book in a special place so that – when I can make the time – I can try a new technique I found. :0)

So, for this run-through, I’m just going to concentrate on getting the books into their new homes.

The NEXT part of the project will be reorganizing things so they’re more accessible on clean shelves.

If I can get these two things done in the coming week or so, I’ll chalk this down as a ‘win.’

Happy Friday

The Quirky Pineapple

The Quirky Pineapple

We went to Lunch Bunch today and everyone was doing fine. We got caught up with what’s happening with everyone, then ran a couple of errands.

Now my husband is reloading ammo in the shop while I work in the yard.

I have six planters left to clean out today, and then I’ll add mulch to all.  Thankfully, we have another perfect day for working in the yard.

When I finish, I’m hoping to do the last section in my DVD set of yoga for old folks (they call it “Gentle Yoga”, a much more tactful name.). I’m really grateful I found this set of 2 DVDs. It’s focus is on people who have never done yoga before, are 60 and older, and who might have flexibility issues, have had surgery for joint replacements and more, or who might be intimidated. I’ve been trying new sections for the past two weeks and I’m always glad I did some poses with the really nice instructor.

My plan, now, is to do at least one section each day. There are 7 sections, so I’ll be able to get around to all parts of my body in the week.

The weather is perfect for my being more active, so I plan to take advantage of it as much as possible.

I hope the weather is nice where you are, and that you’re enjoying the day.
