Every Day Should be “Hugging Day”

Hugging Day “was created by Kevin Zaborney, a Christian pastor, and occurs annually on January 21. The day was first celebrated in 1986, in Clio, Michigan. The holiday is also observed in many other countries. The idea of National Hug Day is to encourage everyone to hug family and friends more often.”

It’s my HUMBLE opinion that EVERY day should be hugging day.

My husband and I have made lots of decorations for our mailbox in the 37 years we’ve lived here. We use 4×8 sheet metal, cutting out the designs with our CNC set-up and a computer-guided torch. My husband makes the mounting bracket and welds it onto the piece. We use an overhead projector to transfer the key parts of the design, front and back, and then I paint the piece on both sides, using weather-resistant paint.

We change the decorations less often now, and we have basically stopped making them, but people stopping to tell us how much they enjoy them really makes our day!

This is one of my personal favorites. I smile each time I see it. I love Calvin & Hobbes.

So, I say, ‘the heck with January 21st annually.’ Hugs are one of the best things on our planet. A hug heals your soul, mends broken parts. Our son gives the very best hugs in the world. They actually make me cry. I hope that you spread YOUR hugs far and wide to all the people you care about – today, and EVERY day.

My Wishes for You in 2022

“My Wish for you in 2022:

May peace break into your house and may thieves come to steal your debts.

May the pockets of your jeans become a magnet for $100 bills.

May love stick to your face like Vaseline and may laughter assault your lips!

May your clothes smell of success like smoking tires.

May happiness slap you across the face and may your tears be that of joy.

May the problems you had forget your home address! In simple words …….

May 2022 be the best year of your life!!!”

Snow Goon Mailbox Decoration

One of the many Snow-Goons created in Calvin & Hobbes comics by Bill Watterson

Even though we are having mostly spring-like weather here in Arkansas this year, we wanted to be sure to honor one of our favorite cartoonists, Bill Watterson.  I’m really hoping that we can get through this month and half way through March without more ice or sleet or snow, but I AM smarter than my daffodils – already blooming and probably soon to have their beauty cut off by Mother Nature…

We had fun with this one, particularly because of the 3-D nature of the piece. We had to make his arms and hands, welding them carefully to the two pieces without blowing holes through the sheet metal. This is one of our larger, more bulky mailbox decorations and we smile each time we put it up.

Snow Goon Mailbox Decoration

snowgoonback1

Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson is one of our all-time favorite cartoon strips. We created this Snow Goon to honor a terrific part of the strip. (A Snow Goon is a hostile, living snowman).

This is the back of the piece. I tried to blend in the horizontal bar attachment piece.

This is the front of the piece. It shows up nicely from fairly far away from our mailbox. We hope passers-by enjoy the decoration as much as we do.

Calvin and Hobbes – Happy New Year!

cnh-hny1

We hung up our new Calvin & Hobbes Happy New Year mailbox decoration!  This is the front of the piece. It doesn’t show here, but when the sun is shining on the piece, the “Happy New Year” glitters. :0)

This is the back of the piece. We had more problems than usual with this one, in that we put the overhead projector in one spot to do Hobbes’ face, had to move it to do Calvin’s, then flip the transparency over and reposition again to do the “Happy New Year.”

We’re hoping that folks passing our driveway will get a laugh from this one.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
