Tuesday Thoughts 5-28-2024

fourpawsquare.com

It’s quite dark outside right now, looking as if the skies will open up any time. Amazingly, I’ll need to get out and water if this bypasses us to make sure my tomatoes are getting enough water. My husband is making some repairs to our irrigation system, so we’re dependent on the rain right now. I’ve encouraged him to take his time, not working himself into a frazzle over it.

Our driveway people called yesterday, saying they are AIMING to do our driveway repair Thursday! Fingers crossed that Mother Nature cooperates at least a little bit, allowing them to do the 2 jobs they have ahead of ours.

Our trash people took a much-deserved day off yesterday, delaying regular trash pick up by one day. My husband got antsy about it. He decided that my information was wrong, even though the paperwork I have SHOWS they were off yesterday and that our pick up day this week would be Wednesday (rather than the usual Tuesday). So we gathered it up and drove it down. I dragged the can down, so now it’s waiting for them whenever they come.

Amber and Jet seem to have finally reached a point where they can walk carefully around each other – a HUGE improvement from the initial big hostility both displayed when first introduced. NOW the big push is to make sure they are NOT together when ANYONE is eating. Amber, our 95 pound yellow lab, has NO sense of humor or grace when the subject of food is raised.

We will also need to be very careful not to let Jet outside yet until we’re sure she knows where ‘home’ is. I told my husband I wanted to make that decision. So far, he will cooperate, though he is bad about paying attention to details, like where the cat is, or whether she is right under his feet, trying to trip him, when he goes out into the garage to replenish his drink supply, for example.

preppyemptynester.blogspot.com

I’m S-L-O-W-L-Y, gradually, making a bit of progress on losing the lard. I’m now down 27.8 pounds from my heaviest. I’m getting used to reading labels on things and trying to make substitutes so I can watch carbs and sodium, primarily.

shesaidbeauty.com-boredpanda.com

I’m routinely doing a 40-minute old lady stretching yoga session daily now. I’m adding another stretch every once in a while. If I can make myself, I’m trying to do some online 10-minute videos, such a exercises with weights for seniors. This varies all over the place, but it’s my INTENTION to do one each day…

I wish you a happy, safe day.

Beginning of Detente?

Amber

Amber is our 7-year-old yellow lab. She is very set in her ways, but got along with our cat, Abby, until Abby died about 6 weeks ago. Now she is having to try to get used to our new cat, Jet, who is about a year and 2 months old, whom we rescued via the Fort Smith Animal Haven a little over a week ago now.

Jet

Since Jet isn’t a baby, and, in fact had a litter of kittens before she was found by the Animal Haven, she is very set in HER ways, as well, making for an interesting and quite laborious ‘introduction’ period. Jet’s area is in the bathroom off the utility room, and has all of her stuff in there, except for toys and the cat tower we got and built for her.

My wonderful friend/cousin-in-law Murray suggested we might put Amber on her leash and sit with her quietly, giving her treats and lots of love while we allow Jet to roam freely, to help them get used to each other. My husband did this yesterday afternoon, to good effect. THEN, because he’s hard-headed, he decided to let Amber off her leash after only one session of this. This occurred with no altercation, thank goodness, except for me lighting into HIM for not letting me know what was going on, plus his leaving Jet’s door open, giving Amber access to Jet’s food again.

This morning Jet was already out when I came downstairs. Amber was outside. I got Jet’s area cleaned up and finished morning chores, then put Jet in my chair in the living room and carefully let Amber in, first behind the gate, and then into the living room with Jet. All has gone well.

A few minutes ago, Amber came into the office to say, “Hi.” Jet was sprawled out on the shelves I use as a computer desk. She stood up and hissed. I petted Amber, kissed her head, and told her, “Place.” Happily, Amber went toward the living room where her bed (place) is.

We may be reaching a beginning detente. I cross my fingers as I say this, because a hiss or too-quick movement might result in bad things, but so far, things are good.

My next project is reminding my husband 1) to NOT let Jet out when he goes out of the house or lets Amber out, and 2) to keep the animals separated when their food or ours is involved.

Memorial Day 2024

@SteveLovesAmmo On X
Greenwood AR Memorial Park

The number of flags has increased as memorial plaques are ordered, created, and added to the park each year. The park is in the center of the square in Greenwood and is quite a sight on all patriotic days like today. The city crew places all the flags and then comes back and removes them. It is a profound reminder of all the men and women who have served our country. Since my husband served in the Marine Corps for 4 years, I wanted to have a plaque made for him. He refused, telling me that since he didn’t actually fight in combat, he shouldn’t be honored. I highly disagree, but won’t fight him on this.

A good reminder on a day when we are hopefully celebrating a day off with friends and family that we have a lot for which to be thankful.

Elephant Ears and Tomatoes

Elephant Ear # 1

Several weeks ago I planted three elephant ear bulbs. They were HUGE, so I planted them in three different planters. Absolutely nothing has been happening until I walked around the yard this morning and saw sprouts! I went back and got my camera so I could share.

Elephant Ear # 2
Elephant Ear # 3

Our weather has been so volatile I wasn’t sure what to expect when I went out to check on my spinach and tomato plants. (The lettuce bolted due to the hot weather several weeks ago and I had to pull it out.) I only have a couple of spinach plants at this point that MAY produce leaves large enough to harvest, but the tomato plants seem to be doing well for such weird weather.

The plants are looking lush. I would like to spray them with EIGHT, which will protect them from bugs and tomato worms, but we’ve been having so much rain I’ve held off. Oddly enough, they also need a good watering.

I’m happy we have anything out there, so I’ll see if we’re still supposed to get severe weather and storms this evening and then decide whether to go back out or wait until tomorrow.

Loggerheads

“If two or more people or groups are at loggerheads, they disagree very strongly with each other.” – Collins (This also applies to dogs and cats who are difficult to reason with. )

Even though our situation improves a bit each day, we may not live long enough for our dog, Amber, and our new cat, Jet, to reach detente. Added to this is Jet is stupid. I try very hard to have the dog gate between her and Amber, but she is now slithering under the gate to be in the same area as the dog. She will then ‘startle,’ hiss, and I’m afraid of what happens then.

So I’m on alert – on duty – all day long, unless the dog is out or the cat is in her bathroom.

Example – Just now, Amber was barking, wanting to come in. Jet was in the office with us. My husband reached down to pick her up so she would be under control while I let Amber in. She startled, biting and scratching my husband. We’re okay for the moment, but the tension is pretty thick.

A. A. Milne is one of my long time favorite authors. I’ve read and re-read his Winnie the Pooh books so many times, and yet it’s never enough. I always want more. I think just as much of E. H. Shepard, the artist who did the illustrations for the series. His style is so distinctive. The drawings that others do are cute, but they will never reach the work of Shepard.

Typical Sunday?

Wikipedia

I’ve been contacting friends and family to make sure they’re all right, looking at articles on my computer trying to find out the news of the storm system we had last night. It’s ALMOST becoming routine that we’re under a WATCH and then WARNING for thunderstorms, hail, wind, and possible tornadoes. It seems this volatile weather is lasting for a longer time this spring than in the past. Once again, this evening, a cold front is coming through, with possible wind, hail, thunderstorms, and more.

I hate it that the change from winter to glorious spring comes with damage to so many good people. Some people survive (of course, the most important), but have to deal with the loss of their home, car, and even their job in some cases. Just devastating.

I’m SO thankful that we have made it through so far with only some downed branches in the yard and/or driveway. My thoughts are with the people who were not so fortunate recently, and those in harm’s way this afternoon and tonight.

Stay vigilant!

Defeated for Today

Nature is Amazing – @amazingnature on X

This is how I feel after fighting with trying to get my ‘subscribe’ or ‘follow’ button to show on my blog website. I just checked and it SHOWS on my iPhone, so I have no clue why it doesn’t show here on my regular computer.

I will keep trying to figure it out, but I’m feeling pretty defeated right now. I’m going to go get a cold drink, stretch out in my recliner, and read a book. Maybe some solution will occur to me.

A nice person commented on one of my posts recently, telling me he wanted to subscribe, but couldn’t find a way to do it on my site. I looked and discovered my “subscribe” button had disappeared. I’ve looked in all my settings, options, etc. and can’t find anything. When I write to get help, I get lots of tutorial stuff or canned answers that aren’t helping.

I’m now trying some weird stuff in an attempt to get something working. Please bear with me if you see something odd on the next blog post you read – maybe even THIS one…

I have enough trouble with tech issues without having mysterious stuff happen to what has been set up for years now.

I’m FINALLY figuring out ways to streamline keeping the back bathroom clean without working myself to death. (The back bathroom is where our newest family member, a cat we’ve named, Jet, lives when not interacting with us. I have her food bowl, water, bed, kitty litter box and other supplies in there.)

I’ve been moving supplies out of the various places I had for things for Abby, the sweet cat of 13 years who died recently. Abby was an indoor/outdoor cat who got along fine with Amber, our big dog, and had the run of the house when she wanted, and was fed and watered in the garage, where she slept in a cat cube on top of a large stack of firewood along one wall. There is a cat door in the overhead garage door, so she could go in and out of there at will. I kept the kitty litter box in the bathroom with the door open for her to use in emergencies.

Jet is very curious and is now checking out things all over the first floor of the house. We are keeping Amber contained or outside to keep Jet as safe as possible, though Jet slides under the dog gate and goes in where Amber is several times a day. I try not to freak out when this happens. We can’t watch her 24/7 and if she’s determined to go in there, we hope she can get back out again if she needs to.

I now have moved her food container in the bathroom, plus plastic bags for kitty litter cleanup, plus cleaning supplies. The only thing not in there right now is the broom and dust pan because I’m afraid she’ll knock that over and I don’t want her to hurt herself. I was able to get things cleaned up pretty quickly this morning without a lot of running back and forth.

I’m hopeful that once we’re sure Jet and Amber are at least at detente, we can start working on showing Jet where the garage is, the ‘facilities’ we’ve set up out there, and once she knows where the house is, we’re hoping she will enjoy being outside, too, whenever she wants. One day at a time.

Another anniversary – with pretty accurate drawing of our house and the repair of their driveway needed after a series of storms.

“Celebration” of the new buffet my parents got for the dining area. The two ‘spiders’ are Hal and MaryEllen.

I played my guitar and sang for a gathering at my high school in Tulsa the year before I graduated. I earned some money while in college in a group called “Student Entertainers” at Oklahoma State University, plus a local eatery close to the college. I came home for the summer and sang at a local place in Tulsa a few times, so the sweet Thomsons gave me support with this great drawing.

Finally, Mother’s Day.

Two kind, very creative people who managed to use their art ability in the commercial marketplace while quietly doing the art they loved privately. It was a joy to know them.

Confrontation Coming

Amber – early photo – NOW 95 pounds – 7 years old – got along with Abby, our cat of 13 years who died recently.
Jet – 5 pounds – 1 year, 2 months old – on the prowl on the office counters

Since Jet’s and Amber’s initial introduction did not go well – with a lot of hissing and spitting, lunging and barking, on all sides from animals and humans – we have ATTEMPTED to protect Jet by being super-aware of where each of our animals are, keeping two dog gates shut, letting Amber outside and THEN bringing Jet out of the back bathroom. Making sure Jet is in the living room before letting Amber in – between the two gates, etc.

This is all quite laborious, but doable, if all parties are cooperating. Now Jet is being a typical cute, stupid, curious cat, defying safeguards with careless disregard.

Example – I had let Amber out and brought Jet out of the back bathroom. I let Amber in – between the two gates – and was cleaning out the bathroom, sweeping, replenishing food and water, taking kitty litter out, and so on, when I looked up to see Jet IN the dining area – BETWEEN the two gates – just behind Amber! I quickly insisted Amber go out again. I finished cleaning, shut Jet’s door, and then went toward the dining area. Jet nimbly slid under the gate, going back into the living room. I let Amber in again, and this time they noticed each other. Jet’s back went up, but she just backed up some. Amber was only interested in a treat.

Confrontation is inevitable. I’m trying to stay calm and realize we can’t be on top of things 24/7. They will either attack each other or learn to let each other co-exist. It’s hard to know we’re doing basically everything we can do at this point. She’s a cat. She will not cooperate. Fingers crossed that things go smoothly.

Really Nice Day

Kids and Animals – Pinterest – Andreas Roeth

I had a really nice day yesterday.

It started with a super-welcome massage from Lynn Moody (479-629-7601), my massage therapist, who now has a place inside Golden Living Retirement Center in Greenwood. When I asked, she told me all of her current clients are coming to her there now, and that several residents of the retirement center have become NEW clients. One of these is my friend, Linda, who lives at the center. I gifted Linda a session, and she enjoyed her SECOND session last Monday, and has booked another. (Once you start, you’re happily Lynn’s for life. :0) ) Lynn is giving the residents a special price and is working with the staff there on helping with financial arrangements so things work completely smoothly. Lynn is a treasure.

After my massage, I went to Linda’s room, hoping for a visit. Our friend Kay and her daughter LaDonna, who lives in Albuquerque, were there! We had a good visit with lots of laughter, hugs, and a few tears. LaDonna gifted Linda a framed photo she had taken of Kay and Linda. I thought it was priceless. When I got home I texted LaDonna, asking if I might have a copy. She sent it to me via my phone immediately.

Kay and Linda, two of my favorite people in the world.

Linda seemed to really like the idea of the ‘paint-with-water’ book I brought her. She liked the fact the pictures were large enough for her to ‘paint’ without problems, that all she needed to make the colors in each picture bloom was water, and that there were sayings on each page.

So, it was almost like Lunch Bunch yesterday – without the lunch. :0) A really enjoyable morning.

The rains came and went. We had a lot of lightning with the storms in the middle of the night, but I haven’t found any damage outside yet. We’re now under a flood watch with more rain due this evening, but nothing severe this time.

Animal Comedy-Cheezburger

I have a massage this morning and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m going to see my good friend Linda afterwards (she lives in the retirement place where my massage therapist moved recently.) I found a “paint-with-water” book that comes with a paintbrush that I’m hoping she’ll enjoy. I gifted her a half hour massage last month, and Lynn said she really enjoyed it and booked another one. I’m excited to talk with her about that. :0)

Carlson-Walmart (We have TWO gates similar to this up – one between the living room and the dining area/kitchen and the other between the dining area/kitchen and the utility room)

The awareness and logistics of ‘who-is-on-which-side-of-the-dog-gate’ is still priority around here, with our efforts to get Amber and our new cat, Jet, to co-exist in disdain and/or respect, if not detente. In order for me to let Jet out of the back bathroom (where all her stuff is) I have to put Amber outside. I then rush to get the cat out – on the other side of the dog gate – then let Amber back in. The problem is that Jet is now following me everywhere, getting under the dog gate before I can let the dog in – putting her in jeopardy. This morning when she did that, I shoved her into the bathroom between the gate and the living room, then let Amber in and then let Jet out again. She looked toward the gate, saw that Amber was there, stiffened up and walked the other way. Success! We ARE making very slow progress, with no hissing, spitting, or barking from ANY of us Lewises.

I’ll get my massage, visit with Linda hopefully, then get our mail as I come home again. We’ll have lunch and then I’ll regroup for the afternoon and evening.

I hope you have a fun day.

Tense Day

Photography-of-Animals-in-Rain-www.fourpawsquare.com

FIRST – We’re now under a severe thunderstorm WATCH until 5pm. We just got home from running our errands, so we can batten down the hatches and hope things go well. I don’t mind storms – I just don’t like worrying that ‘heavy heavy hangs over your head’ for long periods of time.

SECOND – We put our groceries away and I was trying to get a roast in the crock pot for dinner. Amber was barking that she wanted to come in. Jet was meowing that she wanted out of her bathroom area. I asked my husband to please leave things alone while I got the roast into the crock pot.

I did that, then cleaned up the cat’s bathroom where all her stuff is, handled the kitty litter situation outside and all is now good. She was adamant she wanted to come out, so I carried the cat to my husband, and started to let Amber in -only to find the CAT in the area I was going to let the dog into! Shriek! I took the cat back to my husband, asking him to HOLD the cat until I could get the dog in and behind the gate.

Yesterday the cat sat on one side of the dog gate while the dog was lying down on the other. No hissing or spitting from the cat. No barking, lunging and snapping from the dog. So that’s progress.

It looks like we’re in for a lot of that today, as well. I’m HOPING that enough of this and they will both calm down and decide that living together is not so bad after all… We’ll have to be extra careful going in or out of the kitchen, making sure we know where all parties are before opening the gate until we’re sure they have finally accepted each other. Fingers crossed. WHEW!

*Aside – I read an article about things that can stall weight loss. One of the main things listed was tension. Imagine that. I may be a round shape until they throw dirt over me….

I just love this artist’s work. Just looking at one of these makes my spirits lift. They are so happy and full of the joy of living and appreciating.

After all the work on the cat tower, Jet has gotten on it a couple of times, but uses it mainly as a stepping stone to somewhere else. This morning she used it to get into a spot on a high shelf in the entertainment center. She spends more time on the hearth of the fireplace than most other places in the living room.

As you can see here, she likes being with her people in the office. She likes this corner of the countertop between our two computer areas.

This morning she started following me around, coming into the kitchen while I was washing my hair. This is not a good thing because the kitchen and dining area is where I can have Amber ‘in,’ but not able to get to Jet. I’m HOPING that Jet keeps her wits and nose about her, judging when Amber is in that area before squeezing under the dog gate…

It’s supposed to be quite rainy with severe weather today. I’m planning to scoot to the post office to get a package mailed early this morning before the bad weather hits. We have no errands to run that I know of, so we should be able to get home and pay attention to the skies the rest of the day.

I hope you are safe where you are today.

I told you in another post about the long friendship between my parents, Jim and Betty Wheaton, and Hal and MaryEllen Thomson; and that Hal drew pictures he gave my parents to commemorate various events in their lives over the years. My parents devoted a whole wall in our home to these wonderful drawings. They mean the world to me, bringing back all kinds of memories, a few tears, and big smiles.

My dad and Hal played vicious games of Scrabble. They were quite intense and thoroughly enjoyed by both men. They actually had a cheap trophy made that they ‘won’ from the games – the winner keeping the trophy until the next tournament. (This one shows Hal enjoying sticking pins in a voodoo doll of my dad after my dad won this round.)

My dad earned his living as a one-man radio advertising agency. He belonged to several clubs in Tulsa, one of which was a group that gave awards annually to the best advertising in the city. This drawing commemorated when my dad won the Silver Addy Award given for his ‘unique contribution’ to the city over several years.

A birthday card, also giving kudos for my dad helping with the Boy Scouts, of which my brother was a member.

A Happy Anniversary card to my parents.

As you can see, friendships are priceless.

    Jet’s New Cat Tower

The new cat tower was delivered – to the HOUSE – yesterday by Fedex about 2:30. It took us both working together until about 5:30 to get the thing assembled. We joked about remembering when we were up most of the night of Christmas Eves putting toys, bicycles, etc. together for our son…

The fur on the pieces made getting each screw started really difficult, but we finally developed some techniques that made the job go a bit easier. There were at LEAST 5 million screws (maybe a slight exaggeration).

The tower is well made with a sturdy design. It JUST went in the place we wanted to put it – to the side/under a mounted music speaker beside the entertainment center and beside the fireplace. We used a bungie cord to attach the tower to the heavy mounting of the speaker, so it won’t go anywhere no matter how strenuous a jump Jet makes getting on it.

Some of the spacers are wrapped in rope for good scratching posts. There are places to sleep in the open or inside cubes, if privacy is preferred. There are a couple of balls-on-strings to catch the attention of a cat.

We were thinking that it might be another safe space from our dog, Amber, too. We now have a chair in front of it to try discourage Amber from getting really close to the tower.

You can see Jet actually sitting on the larger cube! She, of course, immediately jumped down when I put her on it last night, choosing to sprawl on the fireplace bricks, instead. I had almost given up when she decided to jump back on it. She explored quite a bit, going up and down, batting one of the balls when it moved as she passed.

I really have no clue how much the cat tower will be liked or used, but I’m glad we got it for her and put it together. She is already finding safe spaces in the entertainment shelves, and I assume she will find many more places to get places to snooze as time goes on.

The first part of our day is good. The sun is shining and it’s 77 degrees. Toward the middle to end of the afternoon, though, things may not be so good. We’re due for 90 degrees ahead of a cold front, rain, possible severe weather, gusty winds, hail, and flying hair balls. And THEN the rain is supposed to last through the long weekend. I have to admit the smile you may be able to see is a bit forced. :0)

    Vecteezy

We have our pest spray guy coming today between 10 and noon for our routine treatment. The company has apparently changed hands for the third time since we started with them. They intelligently keep the same guys who do the spraying and the work with the customers, so we’re happy. I have the guy spray for everything, including the rare elephant, since we live on top of a ridge line in a wooded area. I saw the first scorpion of the season trying to get over the door sill into the shop the last time we were out there. That was a good reminder of why the pest company spraying is well worth the money.

Jet sprawled out on the office counter behind my husband’s computer monitors.

The Fedex guy actually drove up our driveway yesterday to deliver our cat tower! We had expected to have to check to see if the delivery had been made and find the box left at the bottom of the driveway somewhere (they put on any computer email notices that it was left on the porch). This man was super nice, said he didn’t have any trouble, and actually smiled. A definite keeper!

Right now I’m planning what I’ll do when I hear the driveway alarm indicating the pest spray guy is coming up. I’m thinking I’ll put Jet in the cat carrier and Amber on the back porch.

    Have a great day!
