Mulching Mania

worx1

Recently I finished cleaning out our big brick planters – pruning roses, cutting back bushes, weeding, etc.  Today I am finally mulching all the big flower planters.

This is my WORX leaf mulcher. It’s a good system and I made 6 large leaf bags of leaf mulch. I started to actually use it, and decided that it needs to be run through again to make it finer. The mulch I’m making isn’t perfect, but at $3.00 for a small bag at the store, I’m very happy with what I’m making.

I’ve mulched 7 planters so far. I’m taking a water and rest break before starting in again. I’ve used 4 of the 6 large leaf bags. I have 6 planters left to mulch, so I’ll probably need to make more to get the job finished. We’ll see.

I was putting one leaf bag’s worth of leaves through again and suddenly nothing was happening. I managed to take the WORX apart, seeing that the mulching cord was used up. I went to get the expert (my husband) to help me. We found the extra cord we bought and he easily put new cord in. Since I watched him carefully, I’ll be able to do it next time. :0)

The leaf mulching set up we have now is almost perfect – except it makes me sneeze.  I have to admit that about the 50th time I sneezed today, I added some bad words…

I can’t believe the wonderful weather we’re having! It’s a bit chilly if one is just walking around or sitting quietly, but it’s PERFECT if you’re doing something active in the yard. I’m trying to use these rare, glorious days to good advantage. I hope you’re enjoying your Sunday.

Prepping for Winter

Autoweek

Autoweek

We have a 2006 Honda Ridgeline truck like this one, except ours isn’t as clean and shiny as the one in this picture.

Today, as part of our preparing for winter list, we changed the tires in our shop.

When we bought it, we bought 4 extra wheels and then bought snow tires. We had the tires mounted and balanced on the wheels and brought them home to store in our shop.  (This is really important because our driveway is STEEP, and about 650 feet long.) The driveway is on the north side of our property and is shaded all the way down, so we still have ice and snow when the rest of the planet has thawed and forgotten the storm.)

Twice a year my husband and I change the tires. Today we took off the regular tires and put on the snow tires for winter.  This is a laborious process, and it definitely takes both of us, but we save about half a day and about $80 doing it ourselves. We have this down to a routine. I’m the go-fer, moving tires around, finding the wheel nuts and special tool we need to get the regular tires off. I hand my husband the tools and parts he needs, and he then hefts the tires up and on the car. We have an air compressor so we can check the tire pressure when the tires have been changed to be sure the pressure is right for the truck. Today we discovered that our emergency spare, which is supposed to have 60 psi pressure, only had 48!

_______________________

My husband keeps a log of when we do major stuff. He found that the battery on the truck is only 2 years old, so should get us through the winter nicely. The oil was changed last month. We should be fixed now for safe travel in the winter. The only thing we need to finish the job is putting our emergency bags in the car if we’re going on a trip or any significant distance from home.

_______________________

fireplace1

Another thing we did was get the fireplace ready for winter. We have discovered we chose well when we bought our fireplace insert over 30 years ago. It’s called a “Country Flame” fireplace insert. It burns really cleanly. We had our chimney checked a few years ago, feeling guilty that we had NEVER had it cleaned. The guy thought the house was new! Lucky us!!! We are now set up to burn our first fire when needed, with wood, kindling, etc. ready for a lighted match. We had to get a new rug to protect our carpet this year because we moved the old one into the utility room to give our older dog, Bambi, more traction when he tries to get up out of bed.

____________________________________

The third thing we did today to get ready for winter was change the LED insert for the light outside the shop. It’s on a timer. When we get ready to walk back to the house, we can turn on a timer which lights the light for however long we’ve set so that we can see easily to get back to the house. It lasted a long time, but we had to take out the little bitty flashlights we have on our key rings last time because the insert had finally burned out. We had a replacement part, and so were able to get out the ladder, take off the front glass of the light, and put in the insert. (My husband went up the ladder and changed the insert, since I tend to freeze when I go up a ladder. I held the ladder for him, then the front glass of the light, handed him the insert, then the light front, then held the ladder as he came down.) He’s the brains. as well as brawn – I’m the go-fer. It’s SO much easier to do stuff like this in the daytime, when the weather is glorious, like today, than during sleet. We’ll get a replacement insert tomorrow when we go to town so it’ll be there waiting the next time we need one.

It’s almost 5pm and I did not get out in the yard to do the leaf mulching. Bah. Humbug. Hopefully, we’ll have another nice day tomorrow and I can get that done.

The days go whizzing past my head….

Folding Myself Into a Paper Airplane – Take 5

Design Swan

Design Swan

Though my yoga time got lost in the shuffle yesterday, I finally did the last section on the 2nd DVD today called, “Overall Flow.” Like it sounds, it’s a mix of poses that, if you only have time for one thing a day, you should do.

Now that I’ve done all the sections, I’m even more impressed with the set. It’s called, “Gentle Yoga”.

The teacher is excellent. Even my husband said she wasn’t annoying. :0) The poses are chosen specifically for people 60 and older, people who have never done yoga before, people who may have issues where they’ve had surgery, people who are particularly stiff with arthritis, and those who are probably a little intimidated by trying this at all.  (My biggest problem is in getting down on the floor and then getting up again.) :0)

Some things seem pretty easy, until you ‘breathe into’ the pose. That’s when the real stretch comes. When you finish each section, you’re on your back, breathing well, and relaxing while you listen to mesmerizing music, or listening and watching a screen with beautiful water or palm trees. (The teacher is in Bali.)

The whole feeling is acceptance and that they’re pleased you’re there and trying. Whatever you can do is fine. You’ll improve with practice. They give you several alternatives if you are unable to do what they ask. Just do what you can do.

I like this SO much that I’m going to do one section for a particular area of the body, plus the overall section, each day. I can cover all the sections each week. They have sections for

  • Joint Mobility
  • Neck and Shoulders
  • Lower Back
  • Spinal Health
  • Hips
  • Legs
  • Balance
  • Overall Flow

I need ALL of these. I’m happy when I’ve done my yoga for the day. After only two weeks I’m feeling a bit ‘looser,’ and less stiff. I have a long way to go, but this is the perfect way for me to improve my flexibility, balance, and strength, plus my ability to totally relax for 5 minutes, not thinking of anything else, planning what I’ll do next, or feeling guilty. AHHHHHHH!

Jen's Creative Media Blog

Jen’s Creative Media Blog

It’s just before 5pm and it’s starting to get dark outside. I just came in from pruning and cleaning out the last of the large planters. I didn’t even THINK about mulching today, or get to my last section on my yoga DVD. :0(

Tomorrow is another day, however, and my INTENTIONS are to get three things accomplished by the end of the weekend:

  1. spreading mulch into the freshly cleaned out planters,
  2. getting the snow tires on our Honda truck
  3. Do the “overall flow” section of my ‘yoga for old folks’ DVD set

If I get anything ELSE accomplished by the end of the weekend, that will be gravy.

Now I’ll figure out some dinner for us and then do some serious relaxing tonight.

I hope YOU had a wonderful day, too.

Happy Friday

The Quirky Pineapple

The Quirky Pineapple

We went to Lunch Bunch today and everyone was doing fine. We got caught up with what’s happening with everyone, then ran a couple of errands.

Now my husband is reloading ammo in the shop while I work in the yard.

I have six planters left to clean out today, and then I’ll add mulch to all.  Thankfully, we have another perfect day for working in the yard.

Flickr.org

Flickr.org

When I finish, I’m hoping to do the last section in my DVD set of yoga for old folks (they call it “Gentle Yoga”, a much more tactful name.). I’m really grateful I found this set of 2 DVDs. It’s focus is on people who have never done yoga before, are 60 and older, and who might have flexibility issues, have had surgery for joint replacements and more, or who might be intimidated. I’ve been trying new sections for the past two weeks and I’m always glad I did some poses with the really nice instructor.

My plan, now, is to do at least one section each day. There are 7 sections, so I’ll be able to get around to all parts of my body in the week.

The weather is perfect for my being more active, so I plan to take advantage of it as much as possible.

I hope the weather is nice where you are, and that you’re enjoying the day.

Too Much Yard Work!

LawnService.net

LawnService.net

Every day I’ve been getting out and cleaning out flower beds. I never thought one could have too many flower planters, but this time of the year, it’s a bit too much for this old broad. We built 17 brick planters over the years, mostly when our son was here and able to help with all the work. Some of them are 8 feet long by about two feet wide. Others are 4 feet square. We have them in various places all around the house. ( I finally stopped this post and went around the house counting the planters because the numbers in my mind kept changing)  :0).

We built these because we live on top of a ridge line. There is no ‘soil’ up here. We had to blast with dynamite in order to build the house and put in a septic system. The only soil we have around the house was trucked in. I tried to create ‘beds’ the first couple of years we were here, but it was too much work, even 30 years ago.

We have now converted one 8 foot planter and one square one to square foot garden planters. One is in a nook between the back of the house and the porch. The other is on the east side of the house. We plan to use both of these for growing tomatoes in the spring and summer.

That leaves – 15 planters to clean out, prune back, and then fill with the leaf mulch I’ve made.

I’ve finished 5.

planter2

This gives you an idea of what I’m doing.

A couple of planters are ready for mulch. 3 more are about half cleaned out. Several haven’t been touched yet.  I’m hoping that if I can get out there for awhile each day, I’ll finish by the end of the week.

We’re trying to work through our “Getting Ready for Winter” list, too. Some of the stuff is quick and easy. Other things are “it takes two of us,” and some are down right hard. We’ll do a few of those each day, too.

I hope that the weather where you are encourages you to spend time outside. Except for the seemingly endless amount of work involved, I’m loving the cooler weather!

Susan’s To Die For Low Carb Meatloaf

I told you that I cooked a lot  yesterday.

My husband asked me today if I had put more Jello Sugar Free Banana Pudding on the shopping list. :0)

He also raved about the meatloaf!  He asked me to put this recipe on the ones we do over and over again.

I got this recipe in the Low Carb section of a website called, “Christy Jordan’s Southern Plate.”

_______________________

Susan’s To Die For Low Carb Meatloaf

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 envelope Onion Soup Mix
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup No Fructose Ketchup ( I used reduced sugar)
  • 3/4 cup crushed PORK RINDS (crush, then measure)
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 lb. ground chicken

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Using clean hands, mix together all ingredients in a large bowl until well blended.
  3. Place two ends from a loaf of bread, end to end, onto the surface of a 9″x13″ baking dish (I used hamburger buns)
  4. Form the meat mixture into a loaf, on top of the bread slices.
  5. Squeeze a little more ketchup on top of the meatloaf.
  6. Bake for 1 hour.
  7. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

NOTES:

Susan’s Tips:

To take this meatloaf over the moon, heat each slice on a sizzling hot cast iron griddle skillet, putting a crusty sear on both sides! Peel off the bread from the bottom of the meatloaf and give it to your 4-legged children. Tails will wag and they will love you forever!

MY NOTES:

I used ground turkey instead of ground chicken. It came in a 3 lb. package, so I divided it roughly into thirds, freezing the other two pounds separately. I was a bit worried because the meat mixture was much softer than I’m used to having when forming the loaf. I went ahead and followed directions and it was REALLY, REALLY good. :0)

Getting the Lard Off – November 9, 2016

Pinterest.com

Pinterest.com

I’m still trying to curb my after dinner eating. I’m getting better, though the problem is not yet completely solved.  For some reason, it’s almost as if I had a tapeworm. I feel hungry soon after eating dinner, though our dinner is low carb. That’s some kind of emotional hang-up that I’m determined to stop.

Yesterday I cooked up a storm.

  • I hard-boiled a bunch of eggs for my breakfast and our snacks
  • I made a batch of sausage balls for lunches and snacks
  • I made sugar-free banana pudding for my husband (He loved it!)
  • I made a low carb meatloaf that my husband raved about (I’ll share the recipe later today)

In-between I was cleaning up and running the dishwasher again, plus washing clothes, stripping our bed and working in the flower beds. I had a really full, satisfying day.

Today I tried two new sections of my 2-DVD-set of “Gentle Yoga.”

Bajiroo.com

Bajiroo.com

The first was for “Legs” and the second was for “Balance.” I’m feeling a lot more relaxed now and I’m happy I bought the set. Tomorrow I’ll try the “Overall Flow” section, the last in the set. My goal is to do some yoga each day. My body is feeling looser and more relaxed and this will improve as I practice. I really like and trust the teacher of these poses, and I feel that I’m getting in touch with my body in a way I have never done before. It’s wonderful.

Doctor appointments for both me and my husband tomorrow afternoon. We’ll see how we’re doing, discuss where we’re trying to go and ways to get there, and keep on keepin’ on.
