Serial Weed Murderer

Ace

Armed with a 2-gallon sprayer of Killzall, the serial weed killer will be active around here today and tomorrow, while the weather is supposed to be sunny and in the low 80’s – perfect weather for a murder.

It seems that everywhere I look there are things that need to be pruned, cut back, cut down completely, or sprayed with weed killer. The fall has brought vigorous plant life, and I would like to get things under control before cold weather arrives.

The 2-gallon sprayer is about the most I can handle, and ONE sprayer-full is all I can do at a time. Sometimes I can do one load in the first part of the day, rest a bit and then do a second, but mostly one is it for the day.

I’ll concentrate on the spraying while the weather is warmer and then switch to the loppers.

If I win the lottery, I’ll employ a lot of good people to help me get our little part of the world more civilized!

I Voted

Bay Tech Label

My husband and I voted yesterday. Early voting started Monday in Arkansas, but when we went to the fairgrounds on Monday, there were a zillion cars and a long line out the building and all the way to the parking lot.

We tried again yesterday. We were going to be out two different times during the day and thought we might luck out. We did – the first time!

There were only a few people in line, so we only had about a 10-minute wait.

They were very careful. There were big red dots on the floor inside the building showing they were serious about social distancing. They didn’t take temperatures, but there was a sign about wearing masks. Everyone inside the building was wearing one. The people who verified your identity were in plexiglass cubicles. I was asked to put my driver’s license in a little slot on the outside of the cubicle so the lady could read it. She asked for my full name, date of birth, address and phone number. Then she asked for my signature and compared it to the one on my driver’s license, as well as a previous time I had voted. She then gave me a ballot.

The voting machines were spread out nicely. They gave us stylus pens that we used to vote, rather than having to touch the screens. We then took the finished, printed ballot to a machine at the door and watched as it was sucked into it.

We didn’t get a sticker this year. My husband was particularly disappointed because he usually wears his on his forehead for whatever errands we have after we vote.

I thanked everyone for being there to help us vote. I was concerned that maybe we wouldn’t be able to vote early this year because of lack of volunteers amid the Covid. I should have known that the people of Greenwood would step up.

I’m very pleased that Greenwood has early voting, giving us from the 19th through election day to make our voices heard.

How Do You Carve YOUR Pumpkin? 10-21-2020

The Saturday Evening Post

I’m not sure what will happen with Halloween this year. Some of the houses on our way to town are decorated, but the official word is that gatherings are not a good idea. Usually, there are parties to discourage door-to-door trick-or-treating, but these are not being advertised.

Everyone wants safety as a first priority. The generous folks who provide the candy for the trick-or-treaters might feel they are at risk.
The people who usually organize the supervise the parties might be worried, as well. And, of course, no one wants the kids to get ill.

This has been a difficult year for so many reasons. I just wish we could ‘take a holiday’ from it to celebrate a fun night.

Be safe, everyone.

Onions are Finished!

Yesterday I finished cleaning the onions from the garden.

These are the onions in a wonderful mesh bag I bought last year – hanging in the pantry, ready for me to use.

Disappointment

The Boston Globe

We tried to vote this morning on this, the first day of early voting in Arkansas. It’s chilly and rainy here, and the line was all the way out the door and across the grass at the fairgrounds.

We will try again tomorrow.

Rio Samba Roses

Rio Samba Roses and celery

As you can see from the tomatoes, onions, and roses, I spent some time working in the yard yesterday.

It will probably rain today – in fact it’s dark and gloomy outside right now – so it’s good I got most of the weed whacking done and used the leaf blower to tidy things up a bit.

We will run errands today – and try to vote on the first day of early voting here in Arkansas, and then we’ll be in the rest of the day. Here’s hoping we don’t drown in the rain!

Onion Harvest

I pulled these out of the garden – only a few at a time due to an infestation of fire ants living in my raised bed, square foot planters. I spread them to dry on a trailer that has a nice metal mesh bed perfect for this.

Yesterday my husband cleaned them off with a hose while I was weed whacking. I will finish cleaning them up today, putting them in mesh bags to hang from hooks in our pantry.

I hope that they are nice and sweet.

Tomato Harvest 10-18-2020

I keep putting it on my list to clean out the tomato planters, but then I find lots of little bitty tomatoes! This happened again yesterday, so I will enjoy each and every one as long as I can. :0)

Productive Saturday

Depositphotos

I had a pretty productive day yesterday.

The first thing I did was exchange my warm weather clothes for my cool weather clothes in my closet upstairs. I still have some organizing to do, and I’m promising myself that I will try everything on, looking for things to donate, but the main job is done.

DinneratheZoo.com

I did dinner prep, getting “Bacon-wrapped Cheesy Chicken Breasts”, a recipe by Suzanne Ryan of Simply Keto ready to put in the oven later. (I made enough for Saturday and Sunday evening, with another quarter of a chicken breast for lunch Monday.) The breasts are quite large, so I spit them in half lengthwise. A serving is half a chicken breast.

We eat in front of the TV. My husband stopped the program we were watching to tell me, “This is delicious.” :0)

TaborTools

This is a busy time for work in the yard. (I get re-energized for this because of the weather cooling off, and try to get things in reasonable shape for the winter.) Yesterday I took the loppers and cut off several branches of a tree where my husband had to duck while mowing the grass. I also cut down several what we call ‘weed trees’ that spring up suddenly each year, getting taller than I am, but remaining quite slim. They are everywhere, but these were too close around our burn barrel. I cleared a good area around the barrel and then stopped for the day. Working with the loppers gets to my arms and shoulders pretty quickly.

I hope that you had a good day, too!

Our recently adopted eating program of eating a healthy food frozen meal from one of two new local places is working pretty well for us.

We have suffered through the prepared meal programs of Nutrisystem, South Beach, and BistroMD. We lost some weight, but they either didn’t have food we liked or discontinued the items we DID like.

We also tried straight keto, using a wonderful recipe book called Simply Keto by Suzanne Ryan. We really like the recipes, but were having trouble sticking to the suggested portions.

Now we are eating one of the frozen meals from either REAL FOOD or STU’S CLEAN COOKIN’ in Greenwood each day of the work week. That is our main meal of the day. I make a tuna fish salad for our lunch (I eat some green olives and my husband eats some sweet pickles), and that’s our eating day. I cook something from the Simply Keto cookbook for the weekend.

Today I will cook “Bacon-Wrapped Cheesy Chicken Breasts.” We will add a side veggie. Tomorrow we will have leftovers/reruns with a side salad.

I am getting a good amount of exercise with all the yard work that needs to be done this time of the year (today is lopping off hanging branches in the yard plus spraying KillzAll weed killer in various places), plus I’m trying to get a house project done inside. (Today is switching my warm weather clothes for cool weather clothes in my closet.)

We are slowly and steadily losing weight and enjoying our meals – a really nice combination.
