Despite my best intentions, yesterday was devoted to my husband’s computer problems. He finally paid someone online to fix it – but most of our day was gone and tensions remained uncomfortably high from the efforts.
I didn’t get outside to start cleaning out the iris planter. We had a cold front come through in the late afternoon, bringing some much-needed rain (continuing this morning), hail, and loud thunder with lots of lightning. I’ll keep watch on the weather to see if I can make some progress on the planter today.

Halloween remains one of my favorite Holidays, even though celebrating it these days bears little relation to when I actively participated as a child (in 1492) or even when I struggled to carve jack-o-lanterns with our son. Ray Villafane has brought carving pumpkins to an art form. He seems to have endless ideas for new faces and has the talent to do a spectacular job of carving. I’m awestruck when I see his work, having worked to NOT slice my arm off while trying to carve a ‘basic’ jack-o-lantern.
Iris Planter
Today it’s supposed to get to 92 in the afternoon, but a cold front is coming through this evening, hopefully bringing us our first rain in over a month now. We are under threat for wildfires, so a good rain would be more than welcome. I plan to work on cleaning out my iris planter – currently a complete disaster – overgrown with stubborn Bermuda grass. The grass is delighted to be there – and thriving – because it gets water from our irrigation system, where the poor grass on the ground is brown and crunchy. It amazes me that it finds its way into the planter through the bricks. You can see the mallard duck we made from a used propane tank “flying” atop the pole.
Between yard work and my daily yoga practice (DAY 92) I should get a good bit of exercise. :0)
My husband has gone to an auction here in Greenwood this morning. He wants to look at the guns, plus ‘garage stuff’ for sale. I absolutely hate auctions, so he’s going alone. I would rather go to garage sales, where you can see the prices and buy things or not quickly, rather than standing around waiting – sometimes for hours – for what you want to be auctioned, only to be outbid.
Since I haven’t heard from anyone, I’m assuming that we’ll have a full contingent at Lunch Bunch today. I’m also hopeful, since it MAY be that we won’t get together again until November after today. (Kay’s son is getting married next week and then both Kay and Linda won’t be there for the 28th.) After Lunch Bunch, my husband and I will do some errands before coming home.
Gardening Know How
Today’s outside project is cleaning out our iris planter. It’s completely overrun with Bermuda grass right now. My plan is to dig out EVERYTHING and essentially start over. I’m considering using this planter as the second tomato planter in the spring, since there is a center pole that will help anchor supports for the tomatoes. I could move the irises to the niche planter. Food for thought. It’ll probably take a couple of days to clean out the planter.

I finished “Tribute,” a book I had missed from Nora Roberts. I’m feeling a bit down now because I really loved the main character and didn’t want the book to end. She was fun, quirky, full of attitude and spunk – just a joy to be around. Good thing I have some more books into which I can dive. :0)
My husband told me yesterday that he didn’t really think I would keep up my yoga practice. As in several other things, he has watched as I get determined about something, give it a couple of weeks, and then it sort of fades away, despite my good intentions. He told me yesterday that he was proud of my efforts. Today will be DAY 91.
I worked for about an hour and a half on our two tomato planters that are close to the house.
This is the 8 foot long planter. As you can see, it is in need of attention. Here’s another view. Here’s how it looks now. I’ll mix up more Mel’s Mix to fill it up before planting in the spring. No matter what I did, or what stakes I used, these plants just went nuts, spilling out over the planter into the yard. Here’s a second view. This is what it looks like now. Before spring planting, I’m going to research methods of tomato plant support to see how we can improve.

It’s a mixed bag here. Our weather is glorious. It’s 59 and sunny, stunningly beautiful. We are under a wildfire alert because we have not had rain here in over a month and things are super dry. Hopefully, we can all get through this day and those to follow safely. I THINK we have a chance of rain this weekend.

I’m planning to go out and pull out the tomato plants from the two planters hear the house today. I may also spray more KILLZALL on the rock bed around the house. That’s it for outside today.
I got the tiled areas on the first floor vacuumed yesterday (pantry, kitchen, dining area, utility room, two half baths and the little area between the dining area and the living room). Today I’ll try to get the carpeted areas on the first floor done before the dog hair starts grabbing us by the leg as we walk by.
I’m having trouble getting much done because I’m in the middle of a Nora Roberts book I haven’t read (can you believe it?) It’s called, “Tribute” and I’m really enjoying it.

Today is DAY 90 on my daily yoga practice. I’m beginning to really believe this daily stretching is integral to a quality life for me. Some of the stretches actually feel good – after getting through the initial stiffness and soreness. :0)
Halloween is a favorite holiday for me. I LOVE the memories I have of trick-or-treating with my friends, unworried about all the ugliness in the world. My concentration was on coming up with a costume (we never bought them at the store), and making sure I had a large container to carry and my flashlight worked. My friends and I would head to the housing addition next to ours, where the houses were a bit closer together and most people had their lights on, happy to participate in the holiday. We would return a couple of hours later, containers full of candy, stomachs full of candy we shouldn’t have eaten yet (the biggest worry THEN – back in 1492 – was a possible razor blade hidden in an apple.)

Now my love for the holiday is centered in appreciating the creativity I find in costumes for kids, usually created by the parents, plus the fact that pumpkin carving is now an art form (rather than MY trying not to cut off an appendage while creating the simplest of jack-o-lanterns for our son.)
I’m already finding wonderful pumpkins by the acknowledged master of pumpkin carving, Ray Villafane, and I’ll be on the lookout for wonderful costumes to share.
I’m sad that the world is such these days that most kids don’t go trick-or-treating anymore, or are followed by alert parents in cars. Some parents get together to make parties that are carefully monitored to be safe for the kids. Sometimes haunted houses are created by the churches. All this – while nice of the volunteers – makes me a bit sad. I wish the kids could enjoy just one Halloween free of worry, where they could just experience the joy.
I’m pretty much finished with the weed whacking in the garden area now. I have some ‘before’ and ‘after’ pics to show you. I plan to mix up KILLZALL today and spray all around the garden area.

Now I’m thinking about painting the propane tank to look like our larger one.
“Watermelon” tank. We painted this several years ago. We own this one. Technically, the propane people own the smaller one and we rent it from them. Maybe I’ll just paint it and they can complain later….
This is what I look like right now, except that I’m nearly as cute or sweet.
I just finished today’s weed whacking. I got the area behind the shop and beside the garden done. Tomorrow or the next day I’ll mix up some KILLZALL to spray all over the areas I’ve cut down, plus areas that are too close to the fence to weed whack, hoping to keep things at bay, at least for awhile. When you live on a rural acreage, the wild stuff tries to take back what you’ve tried to ‘civilize’ much faster than humans can work.
Yesterday afternoon I got the area “beside our shop/in front of the garden” and “garden perimeter” weed whacked.
Today I’m planning to weed whack “behind the shop/beside the garden” where I keep my trash cans of Mel’s Mix ingredients, garden tools, cement (soil) mixer, etc. The weeds are over my knees out there. I would like to get that all weed whacked, and then spray the whole area with KILLZALL, since it would be MUCH easier upkeep that way. Wish me luck?
MOST people fight over money, kids – important things. My husband and I have discussions over ‘trash’ and when to put it out – laughable to most sane folks, but an ongoing issue for us.
“I” want to put it out either the night before or first thing in the morning of trash day. My husband says, “They won’t pick it up until mid afternoon or later, so we can wait until we’re leaving to run errands.”
Last week he was right. We left it when we went for errands about 9:30 or so, and the can was still there, full, when we came back after 2pm. THIS week when we had left it and started to town, I noticed that the other trashcans on the way were empty, with the lids open. We missed them.
When we finished our errands, we stopped at the bottom of the driveway and put the full can back into the bed of the truck to put back in the garage until NEXT week.
The reason that this is a larger deal now than it used to be is that the trash company gave us a can they want us to use. Their truck guy can pick it up and empty it into his truck without leaving the truck. This saves the company having to pay two men to ride on the back of a trash truck, picking up bags of trash or emptying non-regulation cans by hand while a third man drives the truck.
I would just handle this myself, but I cannot get the empty, much less full, trash can into or out of the truck alone without hurting myself. I found that out the hard way the first time we tried to use the can, two weeks ago. We got it into the truck together, but my husband waited while I got it out at the bottom of the drive. I strained my back somehow and am still working on getting it straightened out. We agreed that this will be a two-person job from now on, and he actually got out and put the can in place this morning.
NOW, since we’re living with our trash another week, he has agreed that we’ll put it out when we first wake up next week. HOPEFULLY that will be early enough.
Eleonore Bernair’s artwork simply takes my breath away. I shared some of her work yesterday. I almost expect to be able to reach out and FEEL the water.
