Movie Night

The Adam Project – IGN

We have pretty much given up movie night here at the Lewises because our taste in movies is so different. My husband loves ACTION – action at any cost – VIOLENCE – the more violent, the better.

I want a plot, a story I can get my teeth into. I want characters I care about. I want real acting. I don’t mind a lot of action, but I don’t want that, and special effects, to be the most important part of the movie. I want to CARE who wins. I want to FEEL, not just cringe.

Amazingly, my husband found a movie we both loved last night, called, “The Adam Project.” It came out in 2022. It starred Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Zoe Saldana, Jennifer Garner, and Mark Ruffalo, among others. It has a science fiction theme, featuring time travel. “Even though the movie has the “Back to the Future” aesthetic, it touches on an overall theme of family, loss and healing.” ~ IGN

I found Ryan Reynolds to have a really appealing face and decided that he’s a very good actor, though this is the first time I remember him playing something other than a super hero. Walker Scobell, the boy in the movie, has a wonderfully expressive face and plays a feisty, loveable character. There is realness and humor, plus I teared up several times. A good amount of CGI and special effects, but used to enhance the story.

If you haven’t seen this movie, I highly recommend it.

My Fat is Stressed

Time-2012 NBC Universal Media LLC

My stress eating is stressing me out. I’m eating because several times a day my husband is doing things that scare me. He will be 80 in November (and is quite smug about that) but ACTS as if he’s 20. He has had a couple of strokes and has mainly come back, but still has trouble speaking at times, typing, figuring out technology, and walking at times.

We are adapting to this fairly well, adjusting our activities, expectations, helping each other as much as we can, hiring others to do what we’ve always handled ourselves (as much as we can afford).

The stress comes when he decides to do something I consider foolhardy (is that even a word anymore?) Yesterday he was standing on a wobbly, heavy plastic can on the carpet in the corner of our office, trying to get the top to grip down to the can. He was holding onto some shelves above, but the shelves aren’t really attached to anything. They LIE on some supports, so they can come crashing down, along with everything ON them, ONTO the person who was standing on top of the can. I leapt up to try to get him down. He told me to grab a 4″ x 6″ battery we have for a UPS and hit the rim of the top with it. I managed to do that several times while he turned the can with his feet. We did get the top on the can, but I was exhausted with sore hands from crashing the battery into the rim as hard as I could over and over. I got my husband down safely, but this is what we’re doing several times a day, no matter what I say or do.

I’m seriously thinking of making him wear a bell like a cat or tying his leg to his recliner where I have the only key…

When my husband went to bed last night I ended up eating half a bag of Fritos as if I were starving. I had done well on my eating all day, but blew it as soon as I was alone. It’s a play on the ‘if the tree falls in the woods’ question – ‘if no one SEES you eat, does it count’…

My SCALES don’t need to see me eat. They just die laughing every time I step on them. I’m getting quite hostile.

Happy Tuesday 5-9-2023

Endre Penovac

People are amazing. If I tried to do the above, my stuff would simply look like scribbles. This person’s ‘scribbles’ with charcoal melt my heart.

We’re having one last day of good – though hot – weather here, followed by endless days of rain every day (through NEXT Monday) according to the forecast. I wouldn’t mind having a BIT of rain daily, but HOPE we don’t have a wash out, where people in Greenwood will need a boat to get around. It’s funny that I tried so hard to get the irrigation system programmed for the flower and tomato planters, just in time for over a week’s worth of rain.

My husband got my heart started with a bang this morning. He was determined to fix his recliner, which he had sprung by being over-exuberant reclining it, causing it to tilt to one side when reclined. This caused an imbalance which resulted in it actually toppling over one time. Anyway, I heard a crash while I was typing and ran to the living room. The chair was upended and the crash caused by a big wooden carving falling off the wall. My husband said the carving ‘grazed’ him as it fell, of COURSE hitting his back (still healing from a previous injury). We got the chair right side up. My husband fixed it. I was able to hang the carving back up on its nail on the wall and helped my husband to the chair. He insists he’s all right, but I’m watching him to see how he does. (We leave for a haircut for him in half an hour, so I’ll find out for sure then how he is.)

I continue to be invested in the American Idol and The Voice contests. I’m catching the clips on YouTube. This is the first time I’ve followed either, though I’ve enjoyed various clips from time to time. Last night was the end of another round on The Voice. One of the people I really liked was eliminated and one went on to the next round. I feel a bit silly caring so much, but I would rather be heartbroken about who wins and loses on these programs than about the world around me being in so much chaos.

I hope that you are having a nice Tuesday.

Bummed

Trusted House Sitters

I’m feeling “bummed”, plus “stupid”, this morning.

“Bummed” because one of my favorites on American Idol was eliminated last night. “Stupid” because I shouldn’t allow myself to get so ‘invested’ in a TV program that I know can only have one winner.

I don’t usually watch things like this. Lately it has been an escape for ‘the world being too much with us,’ and I fell hard for two contestants: Iam Tongi and Oliver Steele.

Iam Tongi is 18, from Hawaii. He lost his dad very recently. They bonded by singing together with Iam playing the guitar his dad bought for him with his holiday paycheck. His dad got sick and didn’t have long to live. They recorded several songs and posted them online. Iam’s dad died and Iam tried out for American Idol to honor his dad’s memory. He has captured the hearts of many during the competiton and he made it to the Top 5 last night.

Oliver Steele also entered the competition because of his dad. His dad is alive, a former singer, songwriter and musician. He had a massive stroke and lost the use of the left side of his body. He was there for his son’s audition. He was hospitalized soon after Oliver entered and has since started dialysis, but was able to attend his son’s performances last night.

Oliver is not only talented, his heart is huge. When Iam’s guitar broke, Oliver was really supportive. He got them both through the duet they shared and they have become friends for life. When the announcements were being made last night, Iam was named to the Top 5 and took the lei from around his neck and put it around Oliver’s neck as he left the stage. Oliver was eliminated from the competition a few minutes later.

SO. I’m happy Iam made it to the Top 5. In my mind, Oliver is also a winner – in life. I hope that he has garnered the attention of people who can help him achieve his dreams. I wish him all the best. He really got my heart.

Now I’ll continue cheering for Iam.

I Prevailed!

Pond 5

I think I told you yesterday that we tried to get our flower planters/tomato planters watering system going and failed. My husband was able to change the batteries in one of the timers, but he gave up on programming it. This is one of the many things he has always been good at doing – making me feel inept – but now “I” am the go-to technical person. YEAH.

I tried to do it yesterday, but it didn’t run. I decided to see if I could find the paperwork and try again today. This morning I went out and started from scratch, completely resetting both timers to run 15 minutes apart. I set my alarm so I wouldn’t forget to check to see if they actually ran this time.

I’ve just come back in and I prevailed! I had time to go around to all the planters – including the tomato planters – and make sure all were getting water. I tweaked the amounts, since we had shut things off tightly for the winter and there was still a lot of air in the lines. Once I finished that, I cam around the front and the 2nd system was working!

I think I have most going fine. We’ll check for any breaks in the lines and keep tweaking how much water each of the planters is getting, but the main system seems to be going fine. I’m really relieved. Can you see me grinning?

Shay Day

Two Choices

What would you do? You make the choice. Don’t look for a punch line, there isn’t one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fund-raising dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that will never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its Dedicated staff, he offered a question:

‘When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection.
Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?’

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. ‘I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.’

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, ‘Do you think they’ll let me play?’ I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father
I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, ‘We’re losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team, and we’ll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.’

Shay struggled over to the team’s bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay’s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay’s team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base, and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.
At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn’t even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the
Plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay’s life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came, and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.
As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.
Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.  Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman’s head, out of reach of all teammates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, ‘Shay, run to first! Run to first!’

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.
He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, ‘Run to second, run to second!’

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball. The smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher’s intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman’s head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.
All were screaming, ‘Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay’

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, ‘Run to third!  Shay, run to third!’

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, ‘Shay, run home! Run home!’

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team.

‘That day’, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, ‘the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world’.

Shay didn’t make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the ‘natural order of things.’

So many trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice:

Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity, or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said“Every society is judged by how it treats it’s least fortunate amongst them.”

How Does My Garden Grow?

These photos are from yesterday. Things are going quite well so far. The plants seem to be thriving, and there are not a whole lot of weeds right now.

If you look closely, there are leaves toward the center of the plant curling up together. The ‘head’ lettuce will form in there.

My spinach leaves are being eaten by ‘something,’ but I can’t find any bugs. I’ll go ahead and spray with Eight to see if I can discourage whatever is chomping down.

The tomato plants are growing a lot each day. We’re trying to get the irrigation system for the flower planters (which includes the tomato planters) to work.

The plants are almost covering the whole surface of the planter now. I only have one plant, though, that has yellow blossoms at this point.

I haven’t planted anything else in the main square foot garden. We’re going one day at a time around here lately, so I haven’t pushed seeing what other plants are available in town.

I’ll be working to see if I can get the two timers in the well house working today. We’ll have a test run later today, though starting Wednesday of next week, we’re supposed to get a LOT of rain.

Do you have a garden this year?

Yo Yo

Pinterest

I was doing well on my ‘no-eating-between-meals‘, ‘no-extra-salt,’ plus ‘yoga-every-afternoon‘, but had a bad day yesterday. I felt like I was starving to death. I fell off and gained back two of the five I lost. UGH.

Today is a new day, though, so I’ll give myself a break and do better today. I’ve never been a runner, and these days my hips start yelling at me if I walk a lot, so I’ve been redoubling my efforts to practice my yoga each afternoon, doing lots of slow, careful stretches, breathing into each pose, relaxing as much as I can. This, combined with working in the yard, should make a reasonable amount of exercise.

Hopefully, by the end of the weekend, my scales will stop laughing so loudly.

Today is the coronation of King Charles III. I’ve looked at some pictures on my computer, but I’m not going to follow the whole process. I’ve never been ‘excited’ about Britain’s monarchy. I hope it all goes as planned with no problems of any kind.

Our weather continues to surprise me. (We’re just southeast of Fort Smith). While hoping for some sunshine, I wasn’t expecting a high temperature of high 80’s or low 90’s today. I guess we can turn off the heat inside? :0)

I will get outside later and see what’s happening with our plant life. I may do harvest #2 from the garden.

“Dorky Dogs” – BoredPanda.com – Liucija Adomaite and Justinas Keturka

I love this photo. I’ve had dogs who will do this when they have a full-sized bed a couple of feet away. :0)

Tenor

We have Lunch Bunch this morning, and then we’ll hit Walmart for groceries plus get our mail. When we get back, I’ll make the rounds of the yard, checking on tomato plants and boxes of veggies. I might do a 2nd harvest this afternoon. No other big plans for the day.

Yesterday when my husband drove down to get the mail, he found a humongous vehicle on the street in front of the house. It was designed to be driven with a big attachment that whacks off greenery encroaching on the public roadways. The man was parked, waiting for maintenance to come, bringing him a new hose to put on the vehicle.

When my husband came back up, he gave me two names and asked me to call the county road department to see if we could pay them a small amount while the vehicle was there to use it on our driveway, which looks like a tunnel in a couple of parts. I called, but the supervisor wasn’t there. A man took my information and said he would have the supervisor call me back.

Amazingly, the supervisor called back about an hour later. He told me that he couldn’t use the equipment on private property and that was the end of the conversation. He was very nice, and I had hoped they could help us. We’re definitely getting long-in-the-tooth for work like this, but we’ll try to do it a little bit at a time when my husband is fully healed from hurting his back.

Enjoy your day.

Love One Day at a Time

“Hard Night”

Curtis Wiklund and his wife Jordan are photographers. He also undertook a challenge to draw something every day, whether in the mood or not. He decided to chronicle their lives together, the good and the bad, the happy and sad, and he has done a stunning job of showing love in all its shapes and forms. I just love the simplicity of his drawings. He has a book out called “US” I bought it and it’s beautiful. He has continued his drawings, now including his children. His drawings continue to touch me, bringing out ‘aws,’ smirks, smiles, and a few tears.

Just Once

Sent by my friend, Marsha.

I AM making slow, steady progress in my efforts to not eat in-between meals and to practice my yoga daily. I’m down 5.4 lbs so far and my yoga stretches are getting a BIT easier. I’m still getting cramps on some of them, so I’m moving slowly and carefully, breathing into each move, trying to listen carefully to this old body.

Earth.com

We’re due for rain off and on most of the day and overnight. I’ll try to get out and check my tomatoes on one side of the house and my veggie garden on the other side. I’m really pleased that my husband got out and mowed before all this rain started. The forecast is for a rainy week next week, so we probably won’t be able to mow again until the week AFTER next.

So far this morning I’m fighting the ‘lazies’ and losing.

Hope you have a wonderful Thursday.

Minions

Animal Comedy – Cheezburger

You can almost HEAR all the cracks and pops as I move slowly and carefully through my yoga poses. I have to move carefully because AGAIN I’ve been lazy and using excuses, rather than practicing, so I’m stiff and sore.

I’ve been doing the practice daily again for about 4 days now. I’m feeling a bit better, but I still have to MINDFULLY get myself into the living room and get my mat each afternoon.

Yesterday my dog, Amber (yellow lab) and cat, Abby, BOTH joined me when I got down on the floor. My husband finally started to laugh and then encouraged the animals to give me a break, rather than keep trying to lie down beside or ON me.

I’ve lost a lot of ground with all the excuses, so I’m trying to be patient with myself and just keep breathing into the stretches, waiting for my body to finally ‘give’ a bit in the right direction.

Curtis Wiklund Revisited

Curtis and Jordin Wiklund are photographers from Michigan, specializing on couples who are in love.

Curtis also sketches as a hobby and challenged himself to produce a daily sketch blog recording his and Jordin’s life together. This has resulted in a book called US . I bought this book and occasionally gift myself the opportunity to look at the sketches once again. They are truly unique, with the love between them showing through loud and clear no matter what is going on that day.
