My husband and I are big fans of John Grisham. He always manages to grab our attention and keep it, no matter what the story. Right now I’m enjoying “Rogue Lawyer.”

As usual, I’m finding it hard to stop reading in order to do ANYTHING else. If you haven’t read Grisham, dive in to any of his books and you’ll be hooked.

Snorting, Chuckling, Sniffling, Laughing…

Jude Deveraux via Cathy Ruggiero

Jude Deveraux via Cathy Ruggiero

This is so true in our home. One or both of us will be reading. Suddenly, one of us laughs, snorts, or sniffles. We look at each other, with one of saying the inevitable, “What?”  The one who made the noise explains why the book made him/me laugh, cry, snort, etc., or we might even read a passage. And then we sink into our books again…

For Reading Addicts

We’re having a super muggy, soul-sucking day here in Arkansas, so I’m not even thinking of being outside more than necessary today.

Happily enough, I found and ordered a new low carb recipe book for my Kindle Fire in my travels on the net. I like it so much that I went back on Amazon to see if I could buy it in paperback; but, alas, it isn’t available as a paperback or a hardback book. I gritched to my husband, who is now looking for a way that I can PRINT out the book from my Kindle!

If he can do that, it would be a lot easier for me to follow the recipes. If not, I’ll just make do. The name of the book is –

Ketogenic Diet: Recipes That Melt Your Tongue by Yiran Z. Heathcote

k

I’ve been reading through the recipes and have become more excited as I read. He doesn’t require a lot of ingredients I have to order from the net. The recipes seem simple and don’t take a lot of time. They sound delicious. I’ll write about this book again after I’ve tried several of the recipes.

A Tree Smiles

The Literacy Site via Cathy Ruggiero

The Literacy Site via Cathy Ruggiero

I’m enjoying a website called “Bookbub.com” lately. My sister-in-law, MaryLou, told me about it. I’m regularly buying and downloading new books onto my Kindle Fire. I love being able to try a book without spending a fortune.

I will never convert to ONLY reading the Kindle Fire, though – even if they make it so it cooks dinner for you and cleans your house, as well as being a great source for reading.  There is nothing like holding a book in your hands while you read. If it’s a book from which I want to learn, I read with a yellow highlighter in hand, ready to mark things I don’t want to forget.  Many times I’ll download a book, decide I love it and want to make it a permanent part of my collection, and go to Amazon to buy the REAL book.

I guess it’s a function of my age that I don’t really trust the cloud to keep my stuff available and safe. I try to stay prepared that if something happens and I lose all the books I have on my Kindle Fire, it won’t be something for which I’ll slit my throat. It will be irritating, for sure, but not like losing a REAL one…

Winterdance – The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod – Gary Paulsen

I finished reading this book last night, but I still feel as if I’m in the middle of it. It was recommended by a good friend. It’s not my normal reading matter, and I started reading it mainly because I respect my friend. I was immediately caught up in the story, finding it hard to put down to get life’s normal have-to’s done.

I didn’t expect to laugh out loud at a story about the Iditarod. Suffice to say – without giving away a really funny mental picture from the book – I’ll never think about Vicks VapoRub again without smiling…

Gary Paulsen’s writing style is really clean. I was totally immersed in the story, reading faster and faster to find out what happened next, irritated when I had to put it down. It was simple, fast-paced and very believable.

I cared about the man and his dogs. I was fascinated by the changes in the way he thought about the dogs, Alaska, the race, the challenge, morality, and what was important in life.

This is not only a book I enjoyed, it’s a book I’ll keep in my collection and re-read – after I’ve finally caught my breath.

Edenville Owls

The Reading Room via Cathy Ruggiero

The Reading Room via Cathy Ruggiero

One of my all-time favorite authors is Robert B. Parker. I finished re-reading all of the Spenser books (there are 36 of them) and just now finished Edenville Owls. This is unlike most of his books, but his strong opinions on what’s important in life come through, even through the eyes and ‘voice’ of the main character, a 14-year-old boy named Bobby.

I was supposed to be doing other things today, but this book called to me from upstairs. I took it to the ophthalmologist’s office where I waited while my husband had his eyes examined, and then tried to put it down when I came home. I made it through the burger we picked up and brought home from the local Sonic, but then I was lost.

As usual, when I finish a well-loved book, I feel a bit let down. I don’t want it to be over. I’m lucky to be surrounded by almost all of the books Robert B. Parker wrote. I love relaxing into his world, the wonderful, unforgettable characters, and his snappy dialogue that makes me snort and grin again from time to time.
