Money Well Spent

back1

When we were looking for land on which to build our home over 30 years ago, we wanted a lake, a nice creek, or a great view. We found that we couldn’t have all of them, so when we found this piece of land on top of a ridge line in Greenwood with a great view to the south, we jumped on it. When we were sitting on our porch several months ago, we were dismayed that we could no longer see down the hill into the valley due to a huge surge in growth of what we call, “weed trees.” They come up like a rocket and grow no matter what. They’ve particularly enjoyed the wet spring we had and the fairly mild summer.

We were also upset that we had lost our ‘fire break’ that might protect our home in the case of wild-fire.

We hired a man who works in Greenwood, handles several people’s lawns on the weekends, and agreed to take on the project of cutting our weed trees down. We agreed that he would come when he could and would pay him by the hour until the job was done.

He finished today and we’re delighted. This is our view taken while I’m sitting in a chair on the porch.

Here’s another shot from another chair on the porch.

Here’s a pic taken while sitting on the deck.

This one was taken standing in the yard.

And another. You can see that I still need to use the weed whacker to clean up the edges between the ‘civilized’ part of the back yard and the hill, but that won’t be too large a job.

back10

We’re delighted to have our view back, plus we now feel safer that we could protect our home in case of a wild-fire.

Money well spent, indeed!  THANK YOU, Shane.

A Gentle Rain….

The Law of Attraction Blog - Daily Dose of Inspiration

The Law of Attraction Blog – Daily Dose of Inspiration

I just spent the nicest hour or so. We had the doors open, enjoying a nice breeze. I heard the pitter-pat of raindrops, so I got a cup of coffee, and the latest Robert B. Parker book I’m re-reading in the Jesse Stone series, and went out on the deck. It was quite a bit cooler,  so I came back in for a hoodie. :0)

I put two chairs together so that I could really get comfortable. I had my book and my coffee, surrounded by the gentle rain. My cats, Abby and Smoke, came to keep me company, plus one of our dogs, Molly.  (Bambi had been snoring happily when I went out.)

I lay back, over and over, just to absorb the wonderful smell of the rain, and the calming sound of the drops hitting the deck cover…

It lasted about an hour, I guess, and I felt wonderful when I came back in, all the animals coming in with me.

We need a lot more rain for our lawn and plants, but what a gift I was given today!

Fall Frustration

123rf.com

123rf.com

I all this post “Fall Frustration” because in Greenwood, Arkansas, it’s still summer. The leaves are falling from the trees, but from lack of water rather than cooler temperatures.

Today the high will be around 91. The humidity isn’t quite so high as it has been, but 91 is still HOT. I have been more than ready for fall for a long time now, but have had to be somewhat satisfied by the two days of cooler weather we had last week.

We’re back to trying to get outside early in the morning (hahahahahaha!) or when the sun starts going down in the evening for working in the garden, the yard, or the flower beds.  We took our cocker spaniel/schnauzer mix, Molly, to the groomer this morning to be sheared like a sheep one more time this year.

I’m yearning for long-sleeved shirts, maybe a sweater or a hoodie, playing in the colorful leaves, hot chocolate (sugar-free, if we can find it this year), enjoying the porch and the deck, cooking out….

There’s always hope that this is the final week of hot weather!

Two Days of Fall

parents

parents

We’re enjoying two days of fall here in Greenwood, Arkansas – today and tomorrow – before going back to ‘summer’ and a/c for another week or so at least.  High of 68 today and 74 tomorrow. I feel just like this cute little girl!

The cooler temperatures make me feel a lot more energetic and simply happy with the world. I love opening our front and back doors, getting a delicious cross-breeze and turning on the ceiling fans. As I type Molly (a cocker spaniel/schnauzer cross, is asleep under the counter at my feet. One of our cats, Smoke, is asleep on my daytimer on the table to my right. Our pit bull, Bambi, is snoring on the big dog bed on the other side of my desk, and our 2nd cat, Abby, is happily enjoying sleeping in my husband’s lap as he works at his computer across the room from me. The only pet that isn’t with us right now is our new fish, Sally, who hides in her neon house in her goblet fish bowl, only coming out enthusiastically when I feed her.

I’m enjoying refurbishing a shovel bird we gave the Taylors a few years ago. I got the second coat on it last night and will tackle the feathers today. I’ll spray him with several coats of polyurethane for protection, and then glue on new googly eyes, finishing the project.

Today I plan to tackle exercising with the big exercise ball.  I DID do 30 minutes on the elliptical for the first time since we got home from our wonderful trip to Thibodaux.) I meant to try exercises on the ball yesterday, but ran out of time and energy after spending the whole afternoon going from place to place in Fort Smith, trying to find sugar-free goodies for my husband. Happily, we found a gold mine of a store where we found pies and cookies!  I’m having trouble finding a white sugar free cake mix that doesn’t have pudding in the mix. None of the stores had it, and I got on the net when we got home, to no avail. :0(

Today, with a lower temperature, seems ripe with opportunities.  I’ll figure out some trouble to get into….

Fall Flowers

We aren’t the only ones happy with the cooler temperatures. Here you see some of our twice-blooming iris, and a resurgence of bloom of a nice pink perennial flower.

It really makes me happy to be able to bring some of our flowers inside. Happy fall!

Quiet

purpleclover.com

purpleclover.com

My husband and I just came in from ‘watching the storm come in’ on the deck.

The sky darkened and the wind started to whip the trees and bushes around. Our wind chimes started making a huge racket, so I tied them up with wire tires and came back to the deck.

It was deliciously quiet – the only sounds were thunder and the wind. The temperature had cooled to about 80 and the wind was blowing my hair as I leaned back in my chair, enjoying all my senses, relaxing completely.

Amazingly, the whipping wind didn’t seem to bother the hummingbirds at all!

It rained two or three drops, than the sky started to clear and the wind died down.

I guess that’s what we should expect when the chance of rain is only 20%…
