Growing Rice In Chiang Mai

There are rice fields everywhere the farther you go in any direction from the city of Chiang Mai. There are some fields near the nursing home where Harvey is, and I got curious, since I knew absolutely nothing about growing rice.

This video shows that much of the work is done by hand. I imagine that with the super large fields, farm equipment is used along with more technology. I find it fascinating.

  1. Isn’t it amazing how labor intensive all of this rice growing is? I knew it was backbreaking work, that part where they are bent over and replanting the rice into the dirt again (I mean, they initially threw seeds down, so I am not sure why they have to dig it up and replant it, except to give each of the three little plants more space, maybe?) but yes, that part looks back breaking to me! And that thrashing part, against a big rock, looks tiring too!

We eat a lot of rice so I’ll be sure to be more grateful for each bite now! Thank you, Linda!
