5News

We’re due for a LOT of rain today. (We’re beneath the yellow and orange blobs on the map above, just to the northeast of Poteau and to the southeast of Fort Smith.) My SIL in Charlotte and my good friend in The Villages have both asked me to send some rain their way, so I’m trying not to hog it all. We’ll take a bit and try to send the rest on.

When I was cooking the other day, I opened two cans of what I thought was cream of chicken/mushroom soup. It turned out it was cheddar cheese soup! I don’t even remember buying or having it, but now I have two opened cans. I searched and found a couple of recipes that sound good to try to use up the soup. I’ll try one of them tonight. I’m hoping to have some leftovers, and hoping I can get them in containers and in the freezer this time before Amber decides she should ‘clean up’ …

Depositphotos

I got lazy yesterday and didn’t start weed whacking in the garden. I get a reprieve on starting it today, since we’re having the rain (started about 2 minutes ago), so I’ll switch to inside projects for the day.

Shout-out to Cathy! She went for a biopsy yesterday. They did a scan to pinpoint the area before doing the procedure, and the ‘spot’ had resolved itself. She didn’t need to have the biopsy. WOO HOOOOOOOO! This wonderful news couldn’t happen to a nicer person. :0)

I wish you a terrific Thursday.

Amber is in the Dog House

It may be hard to look at this face and see a ‘maniac,’ but beware. Looks are definitely deceiving in this case.

I told you that we took ‘Sweet Amber’ to the vet when we discovered she had several scary problems recently. I can happily report she has almost completely healed from all of them. She has regained her normal manic activity level and love of life, back to all her old good (and bad) ways.

She is in the proverbial dog house now, due to a combination of my stupidity and her greed.

I cooked a dinner of chicken chunks and soup over rice last night. I cleaned up the kitchen quickly after, wanting to get back to the living room where we were watching a movie on TV.

I put the leftovers in three plastic containers, then put the skillet on the floor so that Amber could ‘clean it up’ (one of her favorite activities) and turned on the dishwasher.

The next thing I saw was three plastic containers on her bed in the utility room. I had forgotten to put the lids on the containers and put them in the freezer. I left them uncovered on the kitchen counter. Amber had taken full advantage of the situation and ‘cleaned house,’ eating every bit in the three containers.

I put her outside, thinking she might “bring all this extra food up for a vote,” but she didn’t. We left her in her bed on the tiles as we usually do last night, but she still wasn’t ill overnight. I put her out this morning as usual.

As of this typing, she still hasn’t been sick. She is in my dog house, though, because she took advantage of my distraction and stupidity. I’m still looking at her as though she might be a time bomb…

Delightful ‘Finds’

As I travel around on the net, I gather things I love. Sometimes I end up with enough from one artist to feature him or her in a post. Other times I only find one thing and just enjoy them awhile and then share them with you.

Exercise

Spice of Life – Deborah Ann – Pinterest

I had a rough night of sleep last night. I’m not sure why. I certainly did my share of exercise yesterday.

I’m happy to tell you that I finished the ‘weeding-and-covering-the-4-garden-planters’ project in my square foot garden. (We’ve decided to wait on trying to take down and rebuild the remaining two planters that finally fell apart due to the stress and strain of being outside in the sun/wind/rain/temperature differences. The angle iron supports are fine, but the wooden ‘boxes’ will have to be completely rebuilt.)

To be honest, I’m not sure I’ll replant the 4 boxes in the spring that I just weeded. I did the work to protect the boxes from further stress over the winter. I’ll make the final decision in the spring. I have three brick planters on the far side of the house that I could use instead, since the main things I plant are lettuce, spinach, and tomatoes.

The next project I’ll start today is ‘weed-whacking-the-whole-garden-area‘ – (inside the garden, in front of the garden outside the fence, and then the area beside the garden/behind the shop and the perimeter of the garden around the outside of the fence.) This whole area is really badly overgrown with high, dense, hard-to-cut weeds – a big job needing multiple sessions. I will try to get that started today.

The weather people are saying a strong cold front is coming through tonight, bringing cooler temperatures and a good amount of rain starting about noon tomorrow and lasting the rest of the day and then overnight. Just in case they’re correct, we’ll do our grocery shopping today and I’ll plan to work on my glassware project tomorrow afternoon.

I wish you a stellar day.

There is nothing to vote for or against in my county today, so I won’t be collecting and wearing a sticker such as the one above today. My SIL, who lives in Charlotte NC, is not only voting today, she is a poll worker for the first time! I applaud her motivation and energy to do this. I am always thankful to the volunteers who help with our elections here, and I always thank everyone who isn’t actively helping someone at the time I’m there. If you have an opportunity to vote today, I hope you take advantage of it.

Kelley Blue Book

Our 2006 Honda Ridgeline Truck looks mostly like this one, but we changed out the grill my husband didn’t like and ours is not nearly as shiny as this one after 17 years.

For the first time in that time, we put our mounted snow tires in the back of the truck and I drove it to the tire place in town to have THEM take the regular tires off, put the snow tires on, and air them up. It was two hours or so very well spent, in my opinion. We had trouble just heaving the tires into the back of the truck and rolling them from and to the place we store them in the shop. I’m really glad my husband honored his agreement to let the experts do the job this time.

I particularly noticed that the tire guy just picked up each tire and put it in the back of the truck like it was no big thing. I had to stop and tell him that I resented that a bit, but was grateful for his strength and expertise. We laughed together over it. The whole job was $32, so that was certainly a win/win as far as I’m concerned. Now we will be as able as possible to get down our driveway – and up again – if we have to – when it gets slippery this winter.

Navien Tankless Hot Water Heater

My husband stayed at the house while I went to get the tires changed, waiting in case the people who might deliver the tankless hot water heater our plumber ordered for us came. They called right before I left, so I was able to leave a check for the unit. The tankless is expensive, but we’ve learned the hard way that it’s no fun to run out of hot water when you’re in desperate need of a nice hot shower after working. We spent more on the installation of the current heater than we did on the unit itself, with a lot of expensive rules about venting and the use exclusively of stainless steel on the pipes. We’ve had the current unit, a Rheem, since July of 2014, so it has lasted almost 10 years with only one problem for which we had to call our plumber.

123RF.com

Since the new unit is about $1,000 more than the previous one, I’m HOPING that the installation will cost a lot less.

Today I’m hoping to weed the last 2 planter boxes in my square foot garden and cover them with tarps for the winter.

I wish you a very nice Tuesday.

When we bought our truck, we bought a set of snow tires at the same time and had them mounted on wheels so that we could simply change the tires from regular to snow tires and back again when needed. We had everything we needed in our shop.

For 17 years now my husband and I have changed the tires twice a year – changing the regular tires to snow tires – and back again. It has become more and more difficult as we have gotten older – no surprise – but last time was so difficult that I was afraid we wouldn’t manage it.

We had a frank talk after we finally prevailed and agreed that it was getting to be too much for us. We’ve had ‘frank talks’ in the past about various things. When push comes to shove, we either remember the talks differently or are back to square one when actually faced with the subject again, the ‘agreement’ having flown away with the wind.

I saw that my husband had printed a reminder that it was time to change to snow tires.

I reminded him that we had agreed last time that I would take the tires to the tire place and have THEM change them out for us. (This still leaves us getting the wheeled tires out of the shop and into the back of the truck, finding the lug nuts and the special ‘thingies’ included in the nuts for the regular tires.

Then we’ll get the regular tires and lug nuts that go with them out and stored in the shop again once the job is done, but that is nothing compared to trying to muscle the tires off and on the truck rims.

My husband shocked me, agreeing. He added that he would listen for the people who are supposed to be contacting us regarding a new instant hot water heater delivery while I’m gone. Can you see I’m struggling to close my mouth?

HUGE relief! We’ll gather our trash in a bit, put that and the tires in the back of the truck. I’ll drive the trash down, get it set up by the road at the bottom of the driveway, get our mail, and head for the tire place.

Beautiful Fall Sunday 11-5-2023

quhl – @quhl5 on X

It’s a beautiful fall day here in Arkansas. I’ve been whining and gritching about it being too hot or too cold, so I thought I would make a point of praising the weather today. Mother Nature’s head is ‘on straight,’ and her nose is ‘in joint,’ so the weather is truly nice. It’s 58 here right now and the high is supposed to be 77 this afternoon.

I’m trying to follow a new routine of doing something ‘significant’ outside each day, make progress on my glassware etching, do something significant in the house, and then spend time on the computer/reading/and/or listening to music – short sessions of each of these over and over throughout the day, plus do my yoga practice each afternoon in an effort to get off my rear, get things accomplished without hurting myself, and feel good about my progress each day.

Yesterday my outdoor project was to cut off the dead elephant ear stalks. I’m leaving what’s left now to dry out before cutting more. When I get them cut off at the soil level or just below, I’ll cram as many leaves as I can in the planter for the winter.

My outdoor project for today is cleaning up the raised bed square foot garden planters and covering them with tarps for the winter. I’ll at least get started with that today and see how it goes.

One of my pet peeves is rearing its head today – Daylight Savings Time. I just read a mishmash of ‘reasons’ we have it at all, and the fact that Congress can’t decide – IF they decide to stop having it – whether to keep Daylight Savings Time permanent or use Standard Time. (And we wonder why we’re in such a mess these days.) End of rant.

I hope that your day is beautiful and that you manage to cram as much fun into it as possible. :0)

Bits and Pieces

“When I offer to wash your back in the shower, all you have to say is ‘yes’ or ‘no’.   Not all this “Who are you and how did you  get in here?” nonsense.”

Pinterest – I love this. I wish I knew who the artist is. I almost expect these sweet little girls to move!

I’m going to go upstairs in a bit and work on the glassware project. I received the kit of diamond bits for the Dremel. My husband confirmed that I’m SUPPOSED to be able to simply pull the current bit out of the Dremel and push the new one in. Time will tell…

String Art is another area that is evolving beyond belief. I love the whole idea of this art form, and I’m amazed at the creativity shown by the artists. Here is the latest one I’ve found. It simply knocks my socks off.

We’re leaving for Lunch Bunch in about half an hour. I haven’t heard from anyone. That USED to mean that everyone was planning to be there. These days it doesn’t mean much. We just leave, get our mail, show up and see if anyone else is there. If they aren’t, we enjoy talking with the restaurant owner and our wonderful waitress and eat our lunch and leave. If someone else shows up, we enjoy lots of catching up and laughter.

I’m working on my glassware etching presents. I can only so really short sessions because arthritis in my thumbs makes its presence known after a few minutes. I’m trying to do several sessions each day I can.

Since I don’t know what I’m doing, I watched this video. It’s motivating and intimidating at the same time. I’m fascinated by what Lesley Pyke is able to do, and she makes it look so easy. She has a lot of expensive equipment to go with her expertise. This video shows you to what I’d like to aspire when I grow up. :0)

Meanwhile, I’m using the smaller dremel that my husband had in the shop. The pencil type engraver I bought just isn’t doing the job. I’m hoping that I can limp along with this one, doing the free-form designs I’d like between the stenciled designs I did on each glass with the chemical etching stuff. I’ve bought a set of diamond bits that I might be able to use. They should be here soon.

I’m having a good time, certainly more than challenged. The jury is still out on whether I’ll give them to my friends or pitch them.

If the weather is cooperative, I plan to get outside this afternoon and do something in the clean-up-the-yard project.

Have a safe, happy day. It’s Friday!

I Earned Half a Bear!

I’m not sure which of these pictures (or either of them) clearly shows you that I’m half way to an old Nutrisystem reward bear that says, “20”. I have officially lost 15 pounds this morning.

I know I told you a couple of days ago that I had lost 14.4, but 15 is much more satisfying as a number. :0)

I have a long way to go on my journey, but I’m starting to feel I may have a handle on what works for me, if I can just keep my act together.

The basics for an older-than-dirt lady like me are –

  • Intermittent fasting from after dinner at night until lunch the following day.
  • I eat mostly protein and share an apple with my husband for lunch
  • For dinner we eat either portion-controlled leftovers from my cooking or occasionally a commercial frozen dinner (Healthy Choice/Atkins), sometimes a side veggie, plus one dinner roll with butter.
  • I’m trying to drink lots more water during the day
  • I’m trying to move more – walking out to the shop, working out in the yard, plus doing a session of old lady yoga stretches each afternoon with some extra exercises thrown in.

This is what is finally working for me, and I have all appendages crossed that I will earn the 2nd side of the ’20’ bear soon.

In about an hour I leave for my rescheduled massage. My body is telling me, “Yes, please. THANKS.” We had to reschedule because my massage therapist was exposed to Covid and I didn’t want to risk bringing it back to my husband.

I had to change the diamond bit in my dremel for my glassware project. I had trouble, so I asked my husband to help. We thought we had it in, but I found when I tried it, it wasn’t in securely. I brought it back down and we tried everything we could figure out to do, but it just wasn’t happening.

I started to try to look for another one on the net and my husband remembered that he thought he had one in the shop. He DID, so I THINK I’m back in business. I’ll try it this afternoon. :0)

The freezes for 4 days this week have pretty well taken care of the rest of the blooming roses, irises, and elephant ears now. :0( It’s supposed to start warming up tomorrow, so I’ll try to get outside and start the clean-up/clean-out, trying NOT to grind my teeth that Mother Nature decided to take these from us at least a month early.

NBC News

My husband woke me up at 4:30 this morning, talking. After I woke up enough, he was telling me he was answering MY question, which he said was, “Who has the power?” I never did figure out what the answer to that was, or why he thought I had asked him that, but threatened him within an inch of his life if he didn’t quit talking and go back to sleep. It took me a LONG time to finally drop off again.

I wish you an enjoyable day.
