Thoughts on a Sunday 6-6-2021

Our weather can’t decide if it wants to rain or let the sun come out. When we awoke this morning, it had rained very recently. Now the sun is peaking out a bit. We’re due for scattered showers from now through Tuesday, at least. We’re starting to get used to trying to get things done between storms…

THANK YOU to the people who have looked at my new site on Etsy HandmadeHavenByLinda and have written to make suggestions. Fresh eyes and new ideas are priceless. I appreciate your help. :0)

I’m gearing up to

  1. finish clearing off the last of the greenhouse. We have one long, heavy 4×4 remaining. My husband has been carrying one at a time out to the shop to remove whatever is still attached and save the wood for another project. With the price of lumber now, this is a thing for us. Also remaining out there is the black plastic we put down on the cleared space that was supposed to keep weeds from growing inside the greenhouse. This had limited success, and was also invaded by fire ants. I will go out armed with Eight Bug Killer and will carefully try to gather up the plastic. And finally, I’ll use the weed whacker to neaten up where things had grown up.
  2. It’s time to refurbish the metal critters we have created over the years that are all around our yard. We are taking them out to the shop, where I will clean, repaint, replace parts, etc. before we put them out again. The sun and rain and whatever are hard on things, so it will take a bit of effort to restore them to their former ‘glory.’ First up is our “Box Turtle” –
This is the way he is supposed to look. Right now he’s VERY dirty. Some of his paint is peeling, and at least one of his eyes has fallen off. I’ll try to take pics as I go to share with you.

Have a fun Sunday!

Long Legged Birds Make Me Smile

I love birds. I love pretty birds AND ‘ugly’ birds. I love water birds. I love water birds with long legs. I’ve been to the ocean once that I remember, when my husband and I went to California. We drove down Highway 101 and I made my husband stop many times so that I could get out and walk on the sand a bit. When I saw the sandpipers skitter across the sand on their long, long legs, it made me laugh out loud. I loved it.

One of life’s many pleasures – to be remembered – not to be missed.

Aging With Sass

“Note to Self:

None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an after thought. Eat the delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you’re carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be still. Be kind. Be weird. There’s no time for anything else.”

Favor

I have just opened a new shop on Etsy called, HandmadeHavenByLinda

I’m listing a variety of things I’ve made – painted wooden earrings in dangle, stud, and clip-on styles; home decor signs; painted purses and tote bags; note card packages; journals; and glassware; so far. I’m adding more each day.

I would appreciate it very much, if you have the time, if you would visit the shop and take a look.

I’m looking for ways to improve the shop. I want it to be eye catching, easy to see at a glance what kinds of things are there, easy to navigate, etc.

I would appreciate any impressions, suggestions you have that would improve it for you, whatever you would like to say.

Thanks in advance if you can make the time.

Friday’s Harvest

We had a good harvest yesterday. My spinach output is dwindling with the warmer weather and soon will be finished, so I’m getting as much as I can and freezing it so none will be wasted.

I’ve never actually done much with yellow crookneck squash before, so this is a lot of fun. I have a lot of little bitty squashes coming on. I decided that the ones above were large enough to harvest. I have a spiralizer tool that will make them nice for sauteing this evening to serve with some pork chops. :0)

It looks like I might have a good sweet onion crop this year. I won’t actually know until much later, but things look good right now. I also have some celery that I grew from cutting off the bottoms of celery I bought at the store. The stalks are ‘spread out’ rather than like the ones you see at the store in the tight groups, but they taste fine, so I’ll take them.

We have small green tomatoes and lots of blossoms on our tomato plants. We have two brick planters that we converted to square foot garden planters. I’m hopeful we’ll have lots of ripe tomatoes to slice and enjoy soon.

I need to do some weeding, but it’s getting dark outside, looking like it’s going to storm. Maybe I can get something done between raindrops…

Side Effects

thefunnybeaver.com

Actually, I am feeling pretty good today. I’m teed off, though because my husband was nice enough to suggest that we have lunch out before we came home from our errands yesterday. We had a nice lunch with fun conversation and great food – and the result was I GAINED ALMOST A FULL POUND. :0(

Ever since I have gained “full maturity” (read I’m older than dirt) I not only have to WATCH everything I eat, it’s like I’m throwing LEAD into my body. I wish I had inherited my dad’s metabolism. He was 6’2″ tall and ate everything in sight. He would eat a huge mound of spaghetti with garlic toast on the side, for example, and still lose weight. The most he ever weighed was 165.

I’m really trying to eat less and move more. With a sloth’s metabolism, however, it’s more and more of a challenge.

There is a strange, roundish bright object in the sky today. It’s been so long since we;ve seen it, it seems odd. It’s supposed to show itself in the sky today and probably tomorrow. It’s amazing.

Show + Tell

Later this morning we’ll leave to join my friends for Lunch Bunch. We have joined each other for lunch every Friday for almost 18 years now. Can you imagine how much we’ve shared over the years? Friends like this are truly priceless.

After Lunch Bunch, my husband and I will hit Walmart and the local grocery store for supplies.

HandmadeHavenByLinda

My new shop on Etsy is open now. Though I’m still adding some things, it’s basically done. I would appreciate it very much if you would visit when you have the time and inclination and let me know how I can improve it.

We may spend part of the afternoon testing our irrigation system in the yard. We haven’t really needed it yet with all the rain we’ve been having, but we will need it soon. Usually we have to fix several breaks in the lines.

I hope that you have a wonderful day with something deliciously fun thrown into the mix.

New Descriptive Noun

Reader’s Digest

I am thinking we should have a word that describes my husband and me trying to deal with new technology “DOOFAD.” (A person who is the personification of being DOOFUS.)

Yesterday we were lucky enough to finally get fiber optic Internet and TV service installed. The Internet is great – much faster with nothing new for Doofads to learn. The TV service is a ‘whole nother ball of wax.’

We listened carefully to the tech explaining the new system. He was bored because he has to say the same stuff over and over, so he went fast. My husband asked how we could get a 2nd remote, and we lucked out that he just went to the truck, got a 2nd remote, brought it back and programed it for us. He left and the fun began.

Long story much shorter, we managed to choose a group of favorite channels and set some programs up on the DVR. We figured out how to get back and forth between the regular TV and Hulu. Somehow my husband got closed captions turned on and gave up on getting it off again. I fumbled around and finally found the place and turned it off.

We THINK we’re reasonably set up at this point, but still have a lot to go over in the book and learning to use the remotes better.

After another hour or so, We have our old services cancelled and we will send their equipment back today.

Today a tech from ADT Security Systems came because our system was chirping, was signaling low batteries, etc. I got online and discovered that ours was a model that required a tech to change the batteries. He came first thing this morning. I had to admit to him that when I couldn’t get the chirping to stop, I unplugged the system for awhile. He figured out that the ‘low battery’ was on the emergency pendant I can wear to get help that comes with the system. I had forgotten about the pendant, plus the fact that it was connected to the security system. DUH. He changed the batteries in the pendant, then in the main system for good measure. He checked everything out, went over security codes with me, etc. I feel stupid, but I’m glad I got the refresher course.

*A good idea for patient teenagers – be entrepreneurs in offering to help DOOFADS deal with new equipment, trouble shoot problems, and explain over and over again how to set things up and use them. :0)

Finally!

reddit.com

Today is the day!

After waiting and watching for what seems like forever, wonderful people are coming this afternoon to install fiber optic Internet and TV!

We came to Arkansas in 1986 so that my husband could take a job in Fort Smith. We built our home here on top of a ridge line in 1987, happy to have a place to ourselves, some privacy, room to breathe, and more. We’re about 4 miles from the town of Greenwood. The fact that we’re here provides some character-building aspects, too.

One of those is Internet service that has been pretty awful. We’ve changed to whatever is the best we can do the whole time we’ve been here, but you can only imagine how happy we are to finally get into this century. :0)

This afternoon we are supposed to have real Internet where we could actually stream something, were we so inclined. We might see fewer circles revolving while a picture struggles to emerge. I might not have to wait to see the half-sentence I’ve typed, or may not have to wait after I’ve pressed a button for something to happen.

I can’t wait to see the differences.

I’ve heard that others who have also gotten this service recently are very pleased with the Internet, and that the TV portion of things still has a few bugs. I’ve reminded my husband, since he has even less patience than I, that we may have to be patient when working the bugs out.

Whatever happens, I’m delighted that we’ll have NEW and DIFFERENT experiences and possible issues!

Hooray!

Dieting Through The Holiday Weekend

Gfycat

I made it through the weekend of cooking out and countless chances to indulge. I didn’t LOSE any weight the past four days, but I didn’t GAIN any, either. I will chalk it up to the PLUS column and just consider it a DELAY in my progress.

Today we are having pretty much non-stop rain, so my outside exercise of weeding the garden and finishing dismantling the greenhouse will have to wait. I’ll substitute my yoga stretches this afternoon.

I’m hoping that in another week or so, I will have a firm grasp on watching my portions in order to lose the lard.

Happy June 2021

Fire Fighters of Australia Fundraising Calendar

June 2021 starts with MORE RAIN here in Greenwood Arkansas today. We’ve had so much rain that there is a flood watch. We might start a side business renting boats if this continues…. :0\

We ALMOST got our ruined greenhouse completely dismantled over the weekend. We have some long heavy boards to carry to the other side of the house and then I need to spray the remaining black plastic on the ground with ant killer before trying to pull it up. Just some weed whacking left after that. It seems strange to look out there and not see at least the ruined building anymore.

We have lots of errands in the rain today, and then we can enjoy being warm and dry at home.

I’ve started a new website on Etsy. It’s called Handmade Haven By Linda. I’d love to know what you think if you have time to look. I’ll be adding a lot more products over the coming days.

Enjoy your first day of June.
