Greenhouse and Garden Update

Today is the first day it has been warm enough to check on my onion sets in our raised bed, square foot garden and the seeds I was trying to get started in the greenhouse.

The onion sets are looking fine, thank goodness. I had covered the 4 foot x 4 foot square with a king-sized sheet anchored with clothes pins, hoping for the best with the awful cold snap we had. Our lows were down to 16 degrees F. – and I was worried I would have to start over.

I watered the onion sets and then weeded another of the planters. I have six planters, three more to go before I can think about planting for the spring.

Things weren’t so great in the greenhouse. Nothing had sprouted, so I started over. I now have the flats planted again – one of spinach and two flats of lettuce, two different kinds. Since we have nice sunshine, I sprayed the seed starters with water and just left them without the tops on them, continuing my experimentation. The thermometer showed it was 70 degrees in there this afternoon, so all appendages are crossed that the new seeds will sprout soon.

Quiz Question

I have to admit I’m kind of a snob when it comes to Facebook quizzes – such as what kind of a person you are, what your favorite color shows about you, etc. Sometimes I actually take the time to take one, marveling at how all the results are much the same – mostly complimentary. (They never say you’re an ax murderer or that you should be locked away somewhere.)

The latest one I wasted time with was finding out what my Japanese name was, based on spelling out my first name. The result was “Takitoteka.” That sounds more like my Egyptian name to me. :0)

_____________

I’ll give you a quiz – if you could be a bird, which one would you be?

This is a hard one for me. I might choose ‘sandpiper” because I love the way they skitter along the sand on their long, long legs. They make me smile and laugh.

All About Birds

I absolutely love owls – have always been fascinated with them. I think my favorite is a barn owl.

Maybe a hummingbird?

Or a spoonbill stork !

If there were actually a quiz based on this, I would HOPE the result was

But those who know me would know I actually look like this –

And what were YOUR results?

Dreamer

Unsplash

Yesterday I told you that I was reading a book called, “The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer”, by Sergio Bambaren, recommended to me by Dieter Onken on LinkedIn.

It’s a short book, quickly read, but with profound ideas are reverberating in my head.  The short description is that it’s about following your dreams, and that you’re never too old to do it.

I’m at a happy place in my own life. My husband and I are retired. We make metal decorations for our mailbox, some stained glass pieces, and metal yard ‘critters’ out of scrap metal. I enjoy making mosaics, as well as painting things for sale on ArtFire.  We can shape most of our days the way we want now, choosing what we would like to do. Our health is pretty good for old folks. I enjoy working in my greenhouse and my garden, plus growing flowers in the brick planters we have around the house. I love to read, write on this blog, communicate with friends, and learn new things. I enjoy experimenting and playing in my art room. The ‘Golden Years’ personified.

The book was almost like talking to our son when he was home for three weeks at Christmas time this year. We had some pretty serious discussions, he and I, while my husband was elsewhere, about what was important. Many of these talks resulted in some tears and a lot of super hugs.

The bottom line was that he told me he is living his dream. He doesn’t care about having ‘things.’ (Although he DOES love to try to make music and needs several things in order to do that.) :0)  He makes money, but gives a lot of it to charities he has carefully researched. He loves the freedom money brings to be able to do things he considers important.

The biggest part of his life now is meditation. He tried to explain to me the contentment and peace it brings him. How he has now grown to the point he is at a whole different level. He is now in Nepal at a meditation center where he is meditating 16 hours a day and learning from a teacher there.

He wants others to know the inner joy he feels. He is talking about making YouTube videos in English, where he can guide people to what he has found, using analogies young people will understand. He feels this is his purpose.

Reading The Dolphin brought me back to how full his heart is. It was as if he were speaking to me through the book.

I hope that you will find this book interesting, too.

Not ONLY…

Tips4Home.com

I guess it’s this cold weather we’re having. That’s my excuse and I’ll stick with it!

Yesterday it was like I had a tapeworm!  I not only wanted comfort food (read heavy calorie, high fat, hot, delicious), but a LOT of it! I simply used every trip anywhere near the kitchen to stuff my face. UGH. I gained a pound a half yesterday!

Hopefully, I can do better today….

Two Good Books

Getty Images

I’m reading two books right now: The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer by Sergio Bambaren and Totally Incorrect Volume 2 – A Conversation with Doug Casey as told to Justin Spittler

The Dolphin book I just received in the mail today. It was recommended by a contact on Linkedin – Dieter Onken.

I ordered the Casey book because I wanted to read his opinions on the newest things happening in the world and to also find out what he’s recommending for good investments to shield ourselves from the tumult of our world today.

I plan to do a good bit of reading today, since our weather is so unfriendly.

I hope you are somewhere safe and warm, too, and can enjoy your day.

Brrr!

“Squirrel in the Snow” – copyright-Kelly Lyon – http://www.nwf.org.PhotoContest – The Nat’l Wildlife Federation Blog

It’s almost noon and it’s still only 17 degrees F. here. I’ve been letting dogs and cats in and out over and over this morning. Everyone says they want to go out, but they don’t want to stay out LONG…

My poor seed starters are still covered up in the greenhouse. I covered my onion sets in my raised bed square foot garden with a sheet, but I’m afraid that won’t be enough to save them.  I’ll probably need to start over on everything once the cold spell is over. We’re dripping water in our utility room bathroom and in my husband’s sink upstairs, trying to avoid pipes freezing. We only got snow flurries, but the diving temperatures have sure gotten our attention. I save a few daffodils in a vase on the table, but the rest are looking really sad outside.

I’m thankful we have a warm, dry house and we don’t HAVE to go outside, unless we choose to today.  My heart goes out to the people in Alabama, Georgia, and the rest of the southeast who had severe weather and tornadoes last night.

Be safe, everyone.

My Cold Nose is Out of Joint

Jeff Jett – LinkedIn

My cold nose is out of joint because, instead of spring, we’re having a return to winter for the coming days.

KFSM News

As you can see here, we’re in the middle of the ‘weather alert day.” It actually was snowing when we were eating breakfast! I’m NOT a happy camper. We have a 70% chance of ‘precipitation’ today – rain/sleet/ice/snow/flying hairballs. I’ve done all I can do to protect my sweet onion sets in the garden. (I covered them with a king-sized sheet.) I’ve done all I can to protect my seed starters in the greenhouse (covered them with towels.) I may be starting over by the time we get to Wednesday afternoon….

I gathered daffodils yesterday because of the forecast. They were right. They’re all hanging their heads all over the yard. We have some really pretty ones in one vase on the table, and that might be it for the spring daffodils.

We are safe and warm on top of our ridge line in Arkansas. We still have our snow tires on the truck, just in case we need them. We have food for ourselves and our sweet animals.

I wouldn’t feel so resentful if I hadn’t tried to get a head start on my spring garden… I’ll report again on this Wednesday afternoon when I’ve had a chance to assess where we are in the planting season.

I hope that you’re safe and warm wherever you are today.

Sharing a Bit of Spring

I told you earlier that we’re due for some hard freezes starting tonight. UGH. :0(

I dashed out and cut some of the daffodils that are blooming all over the yard right now. The ones left out there probably won’t last through the night. It cheered me up to see them today, so I brought some in to save the idea of spring, and wanted to share them with you.

Hopefully, spring is actually coming – though the weather guy remarked that it is really unusual for us to have such cold weather this late.

Sylvester and Tweety Pie Mailbox Decoration

We are scurrying around, trying to get things accomplished outside today since our weather is supposed to deteriorate, starting tonight and not getting much better until Wednesday of next week. We’re supposed to get cold rain, sleet, snow, and super-low temperatures for Arkansas starting tomorrow morning.

We changed out our mailbox decoration, putting up our Sylvester & Tweety Pie decoration.  We’re hoping that once this cold spell is past, the worst of the winter will be behind us and we can embrace spring.

Later this afternoon, I’ll cover my new onion sets in the garden with a king-sized sheet. I’ll cover my seed starters in the greenhouse with some towels. Then I’ll just have to keep all appendages crossed that this will be enough to bring them through. I’ll be dashing out to uncover them, and then cover them again through Wednesday.

I hope that the weather is better where you are, or that you’re able to cope with the weather you’re experiencing.

I’m trying to send calmness and serenity to Mother Nature.

Happy day, everyone!

Patting Myself on the Head – Just a Bit

“Cardinal Taking a Bow” – by Norma Wilson

I’ve told you I absolutely HATE tax time – the whole trying to make sense of my records, feeling overwhelmed, etc.

When I finished these and dumped them on our wonderful CPA around the 15th of January, I promised myself I would start a different way of keeping records so that I didn’t hate this time of year so much.

When I created spreadsheets to summarize our receipts in each category, I copied each of them, labeling them “Whatever Category – 2019”. I promised myself that I would take time at the end of each month, enter the relevant numbers into the spreadsheets, and then file the receipts under the appropriate tax category, rather than the month as I have always done.

I just finished entering the information for February – hence the pat on the head and bowing cardinal! :0)

If I can keep this up, at the end of the year I SHOULD be able to just total the categories on the spreadsheets, print them, and bag them up for the CPA.

I’m a bit embarrassed that I have moaned/griped/whined for years about this – never coming up with a better way to attack it until this year.

Someone should say something memorable, such as, “Better late than never….” don’t you think?
