“Recipe” for Relationships

For the Love of Black Cats via Cathy Ruggiero

A book called, “Soup – A Recipe to Nourish Your Team and Culture” by Jon Gordon was recommended to me by a connection in LinkedIn. I read it yesterday. It was a very fast read, but really deep in good ideas to make you think.

It’s about a lady who is hired as CEO of a company to hopefully turn it around. The truths in the book, though, are really talking about ANY relationships you have. Since I’m retired, and the main one I deal with in business is myself these days, I value the ideas in the book for personal relationships. Much of it is common sense, but no leaders I ever worked under seemed to either know about these, much less even think about practicing them.

Ideas like ‘engaging’ the people in your life, not allowing things to stagnate, not taking things for granted, asking for feedback and then USING it, making people feel a part of the group, important, and more.

Looking at your life with a fresh eye is difficult. I tend to plod along, enjoying the status quo, assuming that all is well. Taking the time to LISTEN, SHOW people how important they are, saying THANK YOU for specific things – all common sense and common courtesy, but all too often glossed over in my rush to accomplish things.

This is a GOOD book, causing you to stop and think, maybe changing your behavior, and above all, encouraging you to value the good things and people you have around you. Well worth your time.

Whine and Cheese

Baby Center

This day started out really nicely – with a wonderful massage by Lynn Moody, the best massage therapist on the planet.

My day deteriorated once I got home, though. My husband and I both got messages on our phone AND our computers that we had exceeded our data allowance and were being charged extra for the month for our phones.

I immediately felt guilty, since we got an iPhone 8 for me this month and I’ve been looking at it, playing with it, and trying to figure it out. I couldn’t figure out how to turn OFF the things at which I looked. Lynn helped me with this this morning, showing me how to tap the home button twice to pull up what was still active and then to swipe each one up to the top of the phone to turn it off.

What I found out, though, was that the usage problem was caused by my husband’s phone. (He still has an android and almost never uses his phone. We got it solely so that when we’re not together, we can call each other, if needed.) The lady who waited on us in the local AT&T office was more interested in her long, black, pointed fingernails than in our problem. She said, “Call Customer Service.”

I got online and talked to a chat person who was very nice, but unable to help with the extra charge or the reason behind the problem. I then got another cup of coffee and called customer service. I got a very nice man who was unable to determine what the problem was on my husband’s phone, but DID arrange for a credit for the surcharge for going over our data limit. He then passed me on to the Tech “Big Guys.’

The “Big Guy” turned out to be named Mary. When I told her that my husband’s phone was android and said, “4G LTE” at the top of the home page, she directed me to settings/mobile network. We discovered the button was in the ‘on’ position and was charging us even when the phone was not in use. There was a peak in usage yesterday from 3pm to 6pm, but we have no clue why that was. We turned the button to the ‘off’ position and we think the problem is solved.

The mystery remains. The phone sits on a shelf plugged into the charger. I have to remind my husband if he leaves without me to take his phone. He gets a lot of calls, all of which are wrong numbers. He doesn’t call or message anyone using that phone unless he is trying to talk with a tech about a computer problem – something that happens maybe once a year.

Fingers crossed the problem is solved. We seem to be out from under the extra charges and we think (hope) whatever caused it is fixed. My husband was ready to blast everyone and is very appreciative that I spent so much time, effort, and patience to get things solved.

I now know how to check our usage online. I now know how to make sure the mobile network button is off.  I feel as if I have earned my salt for the day.

The only problem is that all my get-up-and-go got up and left…..

The Etched Vase Project Continues

I tried DRAWING the design on the glass with white, then black, and neither one was working. I finally just grabbed the dremel and started using it freehand, outlining the designs I’ll fill in later.

This is hard to see. I put a sheet of carbon paper inside the vase, hoping the designs would show up well enough for you to see what I’m trying to do here.

This project will take a long time to do. I’ll only do a bit at a time, since working with the dremel is difficult for me. It’s tedious and must be done over and over to show up well on the glass. I’ll post pictures as an area is finished.

I haven’t done this in a long time, so I’m having a good time. I like not having a deadline, or someone depending on it.

Here’s hoping I can do something that looks okay.

Vase Etching Restart

Yesterday I told you I was going to cut out the design I drew a long time ago on sticky paper on this vase and then etch the design with a dremel.

After working at it for a long time, I finally decided that the paper had been on the glass too long and I wasn’t going to be able to do a reasonable job of cutting out the design. I spent about an hour getting the sticky paper off and the vase clean once again.

Today I’m going to try using a white marker to draw the design on the glass and THEN try to use the dremel. I have a sand blaster in the shop, but the etching done there comes out pretty evenly. What I’m trying for this time is a rougher, texture-y etching.

I have no clue if this will work, but it’s fun to try different techniques.

Vase Etching Project

I’ve started a vase etching project, experimenting as I go.

So far, I’ve sketched a design on paper on the outside of the vase. I’m planning to cut it out and then use a dremel to ‘etch’ the design into the glass.

This is a view of another part of the vase.

Here I’ve started to cut out the design. I have no idea how this will turn out, but I’m having fun trying.

“Waiting for Spring”

I’ve had fun in my art room, experimenting with different techniques with my new set of acrylic paint. Since our weather has been yucky lately – and is currently getting worse as I type – AND I’m yearning for spring, I painted this –

Julie and Julia

For Reading Addicts via Cathy Ruggiero

I’m in the middle of re-reading Julie & Julia by Julie Powell.

I read this book several years ago and loved it. Then I watched and loved the movie, starring Amy Adams as Julie and Meryl Streep as Julia Child.  When I finish enjoying the book again, I’ll watch the movie in my collection again.

I enjoy the whole ‘world’ created by Julie Powell, with Julie cooking her way through Mastering the Art of French Cooking, determined to cook every one of the 524 recipes in one year. Her sense of humor, sense of the ridiculous, and love of a life lived to the fullest just fill me up.

If you haven’t read the book or enjoyed the movie, you’re missing good things.

Triumphs to Not-So-Much

I’ve told you that I’m trying to learn to cook in a fashion that’s healthy, delicious, and will keep us on the path to losing more of the lard.  So far, the verdicts have been “triumphs” in some cases to “not-so-much” in others, depending on who is doing the deciding.

  • I made “Basic Broccoli Soup” with a recipe from The Longevity Code.  My husband gave it a Thumbs Down – mainly because he doesn’t like broccoli. I loved it, and am eating the rest of the recipe I made for snacks and as part of lunches. I will continue making it, keeping some on hand all the time. The only thing I don’t like about the recipes in this book are that it doesn’t list the number of servings for a recipe or nutritional content. You just have to trust that it’s healthy. He’s a doctor, though, and he’s not selling any of the foods or ingredients in the book, so I do.  (If you’d like the recipe for this, I posted it under “The Longevity Code” in the categories on the right side of the blog page.)
  • Yesterday I made “Crustless Broccoli Cheddar Quiche” a recipe I found online. The one I used was from SkinnyTaste.com.  If you click on the link here, it will take you to the site with the recipe.)

The recipe makes 6 servings. My husband came in while I was serving, and said, “Is that all we get?” so I cut another serving in half for each of us. (You can see we’re still trying to adjust to ‘reasonable’ portions.) The verdict was that I loved it. My husband said it was ‘okay,’ meaning that he’ll eat it – particularly since I served it with a salad – but he’d rather it was not too often. I told him that ‘I’ would eat the rest of it, and am looking forward to a fancy breakfast, plus a lunch and dinner from the leftovers. :0) (I’m going to freeze one portion to see how the heated up serving will taste.)

  • Today I made a “Lemon Cake”  from The Longevity Code book. My husband loves desserts, and I thought that this might be a healthy dessert that he’ll love.

The verdict is in. We both tried it and said, “Blech.” It wasn’t BAD. It tasted lemony. The texture was very dry, so I put some butter on top of the still-warm ‘cake.’ That helped. The dogs liked it fine. All the ingredients are healthy, so we might hand it out to dogs and cats. I may have missed something, but this one – so far – is a ‘Thanks-for-trying.”

Seeds and Kindness

Karen Salmansohn via Stephanie Youmans Wilson

When we were doing errands yesterday, I saw that Yeager’s already had onions and some other plants out in the parking lot!  I think March 1st will be the earliest I can plant here without excessive worrying about freezing.

I MAY plant onion sets in one of our raised bed planters, though. I can cover one planter with a king-sized sheet.

If it will just warm up a bit, I’ll get out and prepare the raised beds for early spring plants. (Right now it’s 35 degrees F – MUCH too brisk (even with some sunshine) for this old lady to get out there.

Otherwise, I can prepare seed starters in the greenhouse so they’ll be ready to receive seeds. I want to get lettuce and spinach started for sure, around March 1st. I think they’ll stay warm enough in there. We’ll see.

This is what the raised bed planters look like when they’re ready for planting. Right now they’re full of weeds and the string rotted in the sun. :0)

This is our greenhouse. I’m learning slowly how to best use it. We don’t have heat, so I can’t winter over plants, but I CAN extend the growing season from early spring through late fall.

I’m itching to get started and will show you more plans as I get them going.  Did I tell you I’m more than ready for Spring?

Fun in My Art Room

I love hand painted stationery, note cards, and greeting cards. I love receiving real letters and notes from people, and the people I write seem to enjoy it, too. I also love giving sets to my good friends and relatives for their use.

My newest theme is, “Thumbelina,” where I’ve used my thumb print to create happy characters running all over colorful stationery sheets and note cards. I also include a correspondingly hand painted envelope to go with each of the 5 different designs in a set. The stationery also includes 5 blank sheets for longer letters.

As you can see there are also Thank You note cards.

Thank you notes and note cards.

Clean – Redecorated Digs

My fish aren’t saying much, but I’m hoping they are happy with the cleaning and redecorating I did of their digs today. Their water had become cloudy and changing the filter didn’t help, so today I relocated the four fish while I vacuumed the tank and gravel, put in new decorations, replaced the water with fresh, put in a new filter, etc.

Trying to take pictures of the fish in the tank is something for a much better photographer than I.  There are four fish, although I rarely get them all in the same shot. There are three goldfish and one that is basically an off-white with one gold spot. I got them about a year ago and they have at least tripled in size.

They don’t ever say much, but they bunch up in the corner when it’s time for me to feed them, all wriggling their sweet little bodies and opening and closing their mouths. I say, “Hi, Little fishies!” and that’s it until the next feeding at the end of the day. No tricks. No real affection from them. But I love to watch them as they swim around the small tank.

“I” enjoy the fact that they have a different group of things to swim around and look at, so I’m hoping THEY like it, too.

I’m a Slug This Week

I FINALLY did some real exercise, doing 35 minutes on the elliptical trainer. I at least moved at a faster rate since the machine is in the garage and it’s 41 degrees F outside today. The garage did keep the wind off, but my nose feels frozen. :0)

I MEANT to do my new-normal routine of a different type of exercise each day for 5 days a week, but life got in the way and I’ll take any excuse I can get.

My husband decided that Monday was the perfect day to demolish our 2nd failed brick planter. We spent a couple of hours on each of two days getting the plants out, the potting soil shoveled out onto a tarp, the bricks knocked down with the use of a sledge hammer, and then hauled off using the wheelbarrow. Then we wrapped up the soil as well as we could and put a 2nd tarp on top with bricks holding everything together. It was a lot of work for us, and we were pooped, having gotten a lot of non-standard use of our backs and muscles, plus cardio and aerobic. It doesn’t really take the place of ‘exercise,’ though.

I’ve been a slug this week, resting and recuperating from our labor and then putting off doing anything more until today. So I only have ONE star for the week on my calendar. UGH.

Next week I’ll try to do better. Promise.
