“For those who have experienced the joy of being alone with nature there is really little need for me to say much more; for those who have not, no words of mine can ever describe the powerful, almost mystical knowledge of beauty and eternity that come, suddenly, and all unexpected.” ~ Jane Goodall

I was up, unable to sleep, thinking sad thoughts this morning. There is something about not being able to sleep, up by yourself in the middle of the night that seems to encourage destructive thoughts. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen to me often.
I updated our son on a family situation. He encouraged me to tell him how I felt and we ended up having quite a discussion on life, priorities, the flow of life, and death. We talked a long time, sometimes talking through tears. In my world the parent is supposed to be the wiser one, helping their child see the larger picture. Today it was just the opposite. Our son is really serious about meditation, and will go to a retreat early next year to spend two months practicing in a monastery. He has gained so many insights already, just practicing on his own, that it boggles my mind.
The end result of our talk was that I’m able to see my sad thoughts of this morning in a different, more comforting, calm way.
I can’t tell you how full-to-overflowing my heart feels about how lucky we are to be close to our son. I’ll never be able to tell or show HIM enough, either.

My husband and I are being dragged – kicking and screaming – into the current century.
We like gadgets, but keep discovering we are living in the stone age on some things.
We had to replace our old land line phones because rats got under the house and ATE through the wiring. Since we didn’t want to crawl around under there trying to replace all the wiring, and couldn’t find anyone willing to do it for us, we bought essentially a cell phone on a base to replace our system. We’ve used that for a long time, adding an answering machine that we liked better than the one provided, and then my husband designed a call screening program that had callers pressing 1 “if they were a real person and weren’t selling anything” in order for the phone to ring here.
This got wonky, not recognizing callers we had put on our list, and hanging up on people after they pressed 1. We’ve been living with NO caller screening for awhile, and I’ve been going nuts.
We got a new phone system yesterday and my husband and son set it up. We’ve ordered two more phones and charging bases so we can have phones everywhere we would like them. I managed to ANSWER my phone last night, patting myself on the head. This morning I actually manged to MAKE a call, after fumbling around awhile. My husband has just finished creating a directory.
We have gotten several reminders that the rest of the world has gone on past us, while we stayed in our cocoon –
We may be older than dirt, but we’re still able to kick and scream as we’re forced to enter the current century!

An author I really like is W. Bruce Cameron. I’ve read A Dog’s Purpose and now I’m about half way finished reading “A Dog’s Way Home.”
He writes from the dog’s perspective – seeing and experiencing everything from a dog’s point of view. He really makes you look at your dog differently, realizing that much of what you do is confusing and just noise to your sweet pet, with the exception of favorite words and cherished activities together.
I find his books totally entertaining and heartwarming, occasionally making me close to tears, but always glad I took the time to dive into Cameron’s outstanding understanding of dogdom.
If you haven’t read his books, you’re in for a treat!
I harvested the last of my lettuce leaves this morning and moved the plants out to the garden to clean up a bit later. We had a nice crop this year. I was especially pleased with the plants I started in the greenhouse for the first time. When we had our cold snap, I brought in three plants to live in the dining area. That may sound weird, but we have no heat in the greenhouse and the garage is too cold for the plants, too. The dining area is technically too warm, but I was able to keep the plants alive and producing for another month.
Now I have some celery plants still growing. I have no clue what I’m doing, but I found an article on the net I’ll study and see if I can keep the plants alive long enough to actually produce some edible celery, rather than just some nice looking plants.
I’ll share what I find in the article, just in case you’d like to try this.
Happy crunches for us!

We’ve been having a truly wonderful time lately, entertaining friends who we either haven’t seen in a long time or friends who want to come and say, “Hi” to our son while he’s home from Thailand.
Our home is so full of love its bursting at the seams and I couldn’t love it more.
We’re exchanging Christmas presents, in some cases – in others, just enjoying some coffee or a bit of food. In all cases, we’re enjoying hugs, laughs, and good conversation.
SUCH a special time for us. Can you see me grinning?

Our son got the Wii Fit Plus to work again. (It quit quite awhile back, but I was too dumb to get it to work and my husband had no interest.) We figured out which part of the TV settings to use, put fresh batteries in the board and the remotes and confirmed it worked.
This morning I finally decided ‘today is the day’ and tried it.
Its software remembered me and produced my gray-haired avatar (or I think they call it a Mii). They said it had been some almost 5,000 days since I had been on it. They did welcome me back, and they did notice I’m some 40 lbs lighter that the last time I tried to use it. They said I needed to lose another 28 lbs to be in the right weight range for my height. (I’ve been trying to get taller so I don’t need to lose as much, but that isn’t working).
I did the body test and it said I was ‘unbalanced’ ( big shock)
I then went through all the balance games. It decided I was pathetic. It didn’t actually insult me this time, but my avatar hung her head in defeat after I tried each activity. I left it on, and will go back later and do all the balance activities again.
What I’m trying to do, since I am NOT an exercise person, is vary what I’m doing each day to try to get my body’s attention. I’ve already been doing yoga and abdominal exercises one day, 35 minutes on the elliptical trainer the next. Now I’ll do the Wii Fit Plus another day, (varying which type of things I’m working on) and a walking video the next. I’ll see how that works. I want a regimen I can stick with, don’t dread, and actually helps me.
The balance games show that I really need to do them on a regular basis. Since old ladies like me are prone to getting brittle and frail, losing strength over time, and losing their balance and falling, I’m trying to do all I can to avoid that for as long as possible.
So – now that I’ve actually gotten on the Wii again and survived, I’ll do it again in a few minutes!
