Feeling Creaky

For the past two days I have been mixing and spraying weed killer. We’ve had really perfect weather for it, except for a bit too much wind, but I was able to work around that. It needed to be sunny and in the 70s or 80s, and we had both of those.

On Saturday I mixed and sprayed 6 gallons.  Yesterday I did the same. There is always more than could be done, but I got a pretty good job done. If we get another good day, my husband says that if I’ll mix it, he’ll spray the weed killer up and down our 650 foot driveway – if I’ll drive down to the bottom and pick him up. :0)

Meanwhile, our work outside is done until the rains are finished for the week and it’s a bit warmer in the afternoons. I have to admit I feel pretty creaky today, so it’s a nice thing to be forced to work inside. :0)  I tried to get down the awful, rocky slope past the civilized part of the back yard yesterday to spray the weed trees remaining, slipped and fell down, injuring my dignity, but nothing else. It took me several minutes to get up, since the bare rocks and dirt don’t provide good hand or foot holds, but I managed, inelegantly, to haul my rear end up and get back to the civilized part of the yard.  Fortunately, one of my survival skills is the ability to stand back and “see” myself from a distance at times like these. I was laughing and saying bad words simultaneously.

I told my husband that we’ll have to burn the trees down or hire someone more agile than I to cut them down.

Working Outside Again Today

galleryhip.com

I LOVE this sign! Maybe I’ll steal the idea and paint one similar this winter to put up on the driveway this spring…

We’re supposed to have good chances of rain Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday next week, with highs in the 50s and 60s, but no freezes. Right now it’s 80 and is supposed to get to 83 this afternoon, so I’m planing to try to finish my spraying for weeds. It might not be the perfect day for it, but it’s the best one I’ll get until the winter is over, probably.

We remembered about changing our clocks for Daylight Savings Time, but our dogs were still on ‘regular time.’ They woke us up, saying they were going to pop if we didn’t get them outside. We did that, but then waited until almost the regular time to feed them. Hopefully, this will be the only time they roust us.

We just got back for the weekly shopping for groceries. I notice that, even in a small town like Greenwood, Arkansas, as more and more states adopt higher and higher minimum wages, the companies are opting for more and more automation, in effect saying, “Yes, we’ll pay $15.00 an hour minimum wage, but we’ll hire a lot fewer employees.

Example – The local McDonald’s was torn down and replaced with a brand new model, even tearing out the concrete around it and replacing it. They used to have at least 3 or 4 people at the front counter to take your orders, make change, etc.  The new one here has several ordering kiosks and only ONE employee in the front. There are a few tables where one can eat there, but clearly, the majority of the customers order to carry out or go through the drive-through. I guess there is one employee handling the drive-through traffic. All the rest of the employees are in the cooking or prep section that is closed off from the regular public part.

The local Wal-Mart closed down at least half of the check-out counters, replacing them with check-yourself-out machines. There is one person there who can help you or answer questions. It wouldn’t surprise me if they close down more check-out lanes in another 6 months.

I hope that you’re having great weather where you are today, and that you’ll either do something fun with the rest of your day, something productive, or both.

Happy Sunday!

I’m Glad

source unknown

I’m a lucky woman. I’ve never had a LOT of friends, but I’ve always had GOOD – REAL friends.

I have friends I talk to every day via email, social pages, my website, my blog – some of whom I’ve never met face-to-face, but are close friends, nonetheless.  Some of my relatives are cherished friends, as well.  Some of my close friends I don’t talk to every day, but we reach out every once  in a while, knowing we are special to each other.

My life is rich and full because I can reach out to these wonderful people when I’d like – or need to – and I hope they feel the same way. Other than the love of close family, nothing is as important as friends.

I’m glad we’re friends.

70 Pound Lap Dog

Amber calmly walks over from her bed and ‘walks’ up into my husband’s lap.  She stomps around until she’s comfortable, and then lets out a big sigh, happy at last. My husband laughs his head off as he’s getting pummeled, making her smile, as well.

I grabbed the camera and managed to get a couple of shots.

Happy dog.

Garage Sale Goodies

My husband likes to go to auctions. I hate those because you stand around at least half the day, waiting for the items you want to come up, and then are outbid many times by others, coming home empty-handed. I just don’t have the patience.

I love garage or yard sales. Everything is out where you can see it. You can quickly see the prices, decide if you want it, and buy it or not and leave quickly. What could be better?

We went to a yard sale yesterday and I found several goodies!

The lady having the sale told me that another lady had gathered these handkerchiefs with the idea of making a quilt from them, but then changed her mind. I got them for 50 cents a piece!

I love the salad spoon and fork, and the others are ice cream scoops. You can NEVER have too many of those…

This is heavy glass, with a light ‘frosted’ look on the outside. I just love it. ($5.00)

And this is heavy cut crystal! ($5.00)

I’m very happy with my new treasures!

Freedom!

community.brownpapertickets.com

I just finished getting a loaf of low carb bread started in the bread machine.

I feel a new sense of FREEDOM because I don’t have to worry about Amber –

our sweet, sneaky-Pete 70 lb lab ‘puppy,’ from sneaking into the kitchen, grabbing the whole loaf that is cooling up high somewhere,  and happily taking it to her bed in the living room to devour. (She has done this twice now, of the 3 loaves I’ve baked).  I received an email from Bob’s Red Mill, the company from whom I buy low carb bread mix and low carb baking mix, asking me what I thought of the products.

I ignored the survey, but answered, telling him that I love the chewiness of the bread, and loved the fact that it satisfied my craving for bread, I loved being able to eat it without guilt, and that it was good for sandwiches, wrapping around a hot dog, cutting it into shape to serve as a hamburger bun, toast, garlic toast, etc.  I also had to tell him that it received Amber’s highest “Thumbs Up” award, as she had stolen the first two loaves I baked off the counter in the kitchen! I would imagine that he doesn’t get feedback like this every day…

My FREEDOM comes from the fact that we installed another walk-through gate in the doorway between the living room and the kitchen/pantry/dining area.

I was a bit careless about leaving things on the counters in the kitchen, but even with being newly careful about putting every bit of food away and keeping counters scrupulously clean, there are times when foods have to cool before they can be further handled. I now have the freedom to do what I need to do in the kitchen without having to worry about Sneaky-Pete-Amber.

Watch Out, Weeds!

Starting Monday, we have really good chances of rain all next week with lower temperatures as we reluctantly give up the summer season for fall/winter in Arkansas.

Lately it has been really windy most of the time. I’ve been waiting for a dry, relatively calm day to do some serious weed killing around here. I’m going to concentrate on working my way around the yard, starting around my garden and the shop. I don’t how many times I’ll need to mix another 2 gallons of spray, but I’ll just try to space things out, resting in-between, until I have everything coated.

I use KillzAll, thanks to a recommendation from my good friend, Cathy. At first I didn’t think my efforts had any result. But Cathy warned me that it would take a bit of time before I saw any results. I was amazed at how well it did.

I weedwhacked around the perimeter of my garden and around the shop propane tank and then sprayed the KillzAll. There are STILL no weeds, and it has been weeks! Hooray!

It seems to work better if you use the weed whacker first and then spray, but I’m really interested in getting a good coating of the stuff on the weeds this weekend. I’ll do that, and THEN finish weed whacking as I can  and hope it is just as effective.

So, if you see an old lady hoisting a sprayer with a wand, and a maniacal look in her eye, WATCH OUT! She might be in the mood to consider YOU a weed!

I’m having fun trying to make Christmas presents for friends and family. I don’t work in my art room every day, but I’m making progress. I’m doing some things I’ve never tried before, so I’m not sure they’ll be successful – in fact, I did some things and ended up tossing them because I really didn’t like the way they turned out. If I keep at it, though, I hope I can make something people will like.

Amber at Almost 8 Months

I’m thinking that Amber weighs about 70 lbs. now, though we haven’t officially weighed her. One of these days we’ll go to the vet and see if the coast is clear to take her in and get an official reading. She will be 8 months old on Tuesday, November 7th. I’ve been told that labs are puppies for at least two years, and Amber is proving the truth of this statement.

We’re glad that we got her when we did. I think if we had tried to do this next year, it would be too much for us to deal with. This year it has been a real challenge, but she is becoming a real member of the family now, with even our 12-year-old Cocker Spaniel/Schnauzer cross, Molly, PLAYING with Amber. When it gets too intense, Molly snaps at Amber, making Amber cry out in dismay… Even the cats no longer freak out and refuse to come in. Amber gets right in their face and noses them, of course, but they seem to understand that she’s not trying to hurt them.

To say we’ve modified our lives is a vast understatement. Our lives revolve around taking Amber out for walks. We try to give her the opportunity for as much outside time as we can handle. We now routinely take her with us if we’re going to the greenhouse, the garden, or the shop. My husband takes her in the car to get the mail – with a trip around the mile as an added bonus.

She spends almost the whole day with us now. She no longer stays on the porch, but sleeps on the huge dog bed we have in the utility room with Molly at night. She is in the office with us right now, after I took her out for a game of fetch the ball in the front yard. She lets us know she wants to go out by coming over and standing, looking at us, or – if we don’t respond quickly enough to suit her – flipping up our arm with her nose. (This is quite attention-getting when you’re trying to type on the computer. :0) )

She now knows the following commands –

  • “Hurry Up” (used when we’re encouraging her to take care of business in the yard – particularly when it’s raining, cold, etc.)
  • “Sit”
  • “Down”
  • “Place”
  • “Come”
  • “Back up” (she tends to sit right on the other side of the gates, so we can’t open them until she moves out of the way)
  • She sits while we put her food bowl down and waits until we say “Okay” to start eating.
  • “No”

Of course, all our efforts are out the window when someone comes. We’re trying to bring her out with us when we get a delivery so that she gets practice in listening to us and obeying. We’re also arranging play dates with the dog of our friend. The combination of a pocketful of treats and the shock collar seems to be a good combination.

We have three gates on the first floor now – a new use for the term, “gated community” – across the office door, between the living room and the dining/kitchen area, and across the doorway to the utility room. We have to make sure they are latched, since she’s learned to open them with her nose if not securely closed.

We have FINALLY gotten her to stop chewing the one wooden wall on the back porch, and now the baseboards and wall in the utility room by providing a stick she can chew on. We’ve tried everything else we can think of – chew toys, Bitter Apple, Louisiana Hot Sauce, etc., and the only thing that keeps her from chewing something she shouldn’t is being allowed to chew up a stick. We start each morning sweeping up the stick debris in the utility room. I’m not really happy with this solution, but we need to use what works.

Amber thinks she’s a lap dog. She routinely now tries to ooze up into my husband’s or my recliner when we’re watching TV in the living room. It’s really funny when she does this, and we can’t help but laugh, which encourages her to continue. We hug her and love her, and then tell her “place!” so she’ll go back to her bed.

The past 6 months have been a big challenge, but we’re gaining a really good friend in the process. :0)

The Best Compliment Ever

Awhile back I posted that I had closed down my website, Creative Artworks, after about 17 years. I had the work of several artists besides myself displayed, and I had the best time promoting our work, plus made some good friends. Then it got to the point where a small group of artists were actually working with me, helping me keep our standards high, helping me with contests, keeping their part of the website up to date. There was a larger and larger group of people who were just there. I actually had some who embarrassed me. We would get an order. I would email them, and they would respond, “Oh, I haven’t made those in a year.” I would have to refund money, disappoint a customer, and creat something for them to try to show them how sorry I was for their inconvenience. When this happened more and more, I decided to shut down Creative Artworks. I keep my own work on ArtFire.com and Etsy.com.

I received a phone call at about 6:30 yesterday evening. It took me two tries of the man saying his name before I recognized who he was. This was a customer of mine for whom I had painted and personalized wooden ornaments. He tried to go to Creative Artworks, finding the link no longer took him to the site. He tried emailing me at the email address I used for business, and the email bounced. So he called me, still having my phone number from the last custom order!

He wants me to paint and personalize more ornaments for him! I was astounded that he went to so much trouble to contact me. I had tears in my eyes while I was trying to talk to him. He now has my regular email address and we’ll work out the details of which ornaments he wants, how many, and possibly for multiple years, but I’m still tearing up.  Of COURSE, he’ll get a nice discount on whatever he decides to order. :0)

What a beautiful compliment! To say this warm feeling has started off my Friday well is a vast understatement.

Two For One

Craftsman Push Weed Eater

I just spent over an hour using our push weed whacker (Craftsman calls it a weed EATER).  I find this to be a two-for-one thing: good exercise and character-building both at one time.

‘Good exercise’ because nothing in our yard is flat. I’m either trying to get it to go uphill, fall in a hole, or hit rocks or a hard clump of weed that cause me to really work. I rested once outside, then did another hitch before coming in. I was really breathing hard, hot (it got to 90 degrees F. today!) and my hips were screaming.

‘Character-building’ because I worked harder than I would have normally because I really wanted to get the area I was working on DONE. I went all the way around my square foot garden perimeter, around the garden bins, around the shop propane tank, and the whole area beside the shop out to the garden.

I have a lot more weed whacking to do, but I’ll do the rest with one of our hand-held weed eaters.

Now my husband can run the gas out of this and put it away for the winter.

Lewis Mailbox Decoration – First Half of November

This is the front of the Sylvester and Tweetie Pie mailbox decoration. My favorite thing about this one is that my husband was able to weld on whiskers for Sylvester and hair on Tweetie Pie without burning through the metal – a hard thing to do!

Here’s the back of the piece.

Good Thursday Morning

Once a month I have a wonderful massage. I look forward to the next one just as soon as the one I’ve had is finished. My massage therapist is the best. Lynn Moody has the Town Square Day Spa in Greenwood, Arkansas. If you’re in the area, the spa address is 320 South Coker Street in Greenwood. Her phone number is 479-629-7601 and her email is lynnmoody42@yahoo.com.  If you’re not in the area, I’m sorry. You’re missing a really class act.  She listens, she cares, she is an expert at helping you when you hurt, and makes you feel absolutely relaxed and good if you’re just needing a good massage. She is worth her weight in gold.

I used to feel massage was an expensive luxury. If the bottom fell out of the world, I would have to give it up, but otherwise, it’s high on my list of wonderful things to do for myself. I feel good. My attitude is so much better. It definitely keeps me healthier. If you’re wavering about the whole idea of massage, my suggestion is to dive in and prepare to love it.

When I came home, my husband was in the ‘check-off-stuff-on-the-get-ready-for-winter list’ mood.  We decided to change the tires on the truck – from the regular tires to our snow tires. We do this ourselves in the shop. When we bought the Honda Ridgeline truck in 2006, we bought 4 extra wheels and 4 snow tires. We had the tires mounted on the wheels and stored them in the garage. Today we did the change in about 45 minutes from start to finish. We both get a lot of exercise, and we save money not having to pay someone else to do the tire change. We’ll change back to the regular tires in mid-March.  About half of the time was moving stuff in the shop so that we could drive the truck inside, and then putting things back to rights when the tires were on and the truck was outside again. We did about the best we’ve ever done. No yelling, no injuries, no tears, no problems with equipment not working, no surprises. YES!

This afternoon we have our geothermal guy coming out to check our equipment to make sure all is good for the fall and winter. We had a geothermal heat and air system installed retroactively in 2010 and signed a contract with Air-Pro Heating & Air Conditioning Incorporated to come out in the spring and then again in the fall to be sure things are working as they should.  This is a great company. The men are knowledgeable, know exactly what to check for, and are very nice, as an added bonus. If you need anyone to come and help with problems, their phone number is 479-646-9699, and their address is 9109 Zero St., For Smith AR 72903.  They can fix any problems they find and you feel safe after they finish looking at things.

A great morning and a good day. Great weather, too!

I’m planning to make us some lunch and then see if I can do any good with our push-around weed whacker this afternoon. My husband has running that out of gas for the winter on his to-do list, too…

Have a wonderful day!
