Day Three of Being Back in the Saddle

The Cincinnati Zoo

This is DAY THREE of making SURE I’m eating under 40 grams of carbs per day and under 1200 calories, plus doing at least a session of yoga.

I’m using MyFitnessPal.com to list everything I’m eating and drinking to plan things out after breakfast. I’m gritting my teeth as my husband eats chips, sugar-free candy, sugar-free pop or tea, no sugar added ice cream sandwiches, but he’s eating the way he should for his diabetes. I’ve quit kidding myself that I can indulge, as well, but I AM building in my orange ice cream bar at night into my totals, relishing every bite.

I’ve been doing my one session per day of “Gentle Yoga” and am feeling better for it. I did “Head and Shoulders” Saturday, “Joints” yesterday, and “Lower Back” today.  It feels good to be treating myself better this way.

I feel as if I have a good start on getting back in the saddle of taking better care of myself again.

Big Day for Amber

Today Amber is 5 months old.

We took her to the vet this morning to be spayed. She weighs 52.5 pounds!  The office called a bit after noon, telling me that she had come through the procedure fine, was awake, and was walking around a bit. We can pick her up after 3:30.

My husband has spent most of the day in the shop, working on creating a rifle rest. He came in just a few minutes ago and we’ve now had some lunch.

I finally had a weather window where it seems we have a chance of 48 hours without rain, so I mixed up the KillsAll weed killer and sprayed it “off the edge of our world,” beyond what we refer to as the civilized part of our back yard, where Foy Brown came and cleared as much as possible with his brush hog recently. I’m trying to kill the rest of the old weed trees, plus the new ones already sprouting, plus other un-mow-able greenery.

It’ll probably take several sessions of spraying and then some time to see where we are on the project. I spent an hour out there today, and I was super hot and tired when I finished spraying the 2 gallons I mixed up. I’m hoping the weather will allow for me to continue my efforts tomorrow. I’d like to go farther down the hill where the big weed trees in the rocks are. I’m hopeful that the combination of Foy planning to brush hog twice a year and my efforts with the weed killer and loppers will keep that area under much better control, keep our view of the valley opened up, and keep our fire break.

As I was doing chores, I kept noticing how QUIET it is. I got up and refilled my coffee cup without having to juggle things carefully, open and close gates, balance coffee cup and put it up high on the file cabinet before coming in again and then moving carefully, avoiding getting mowed down.

I realized that I may be becoming addicted to Amber.

She is a LOT of trouble. I sport many more band-aids than I’ve ever worn in my life due to her sharp little bitty teeth. I have to plan ahead and CONCENTRATE to do the simplest things without mishap. I need to keep track of time to be sure I’ve taken her out and we’ve had a walk recently. I’m exhausted when we put her in her crate for the night, asleep almost before my head hits the pillow. We have to get up at a reasonable hour, rather than being able to sleep in, because we need to get the puppy out. We need to pay attention to where Molly and the cats are so they don’t get dive-bombed, etc., etc., etc.

At the bottom of it, though, is our lives are much richer. Amber filled the hole of our losing our pit bull, Bambi, after almost 14 years of sharing our lives with him. She forced us, not only to reach out to her, but allow her into our lives, changing every aspect of what we do every day in order to meet her needs. In doing that, we’ve gained a wonderfully rambunctious, affectionate family member. The other animals are finally calming down. There is still hissing and spitting from the cats, but they seem to realize she doesn’t intend to hurt them. Molly doesn’t like to be dive-bombed, but she knows we’re watching and making sure it doesn’t go too far. She still gets her share of our love and attention.

Since we’re older than dirt, we tend to get set in our ways. Amber has played fruit-basket-upset with that, making us rethink everything we do, and that’s a really nice gift. We are truly rich in our animal family, with Molly and Amber, Abby and Smoke, and the four bright gold fish. I find I miss the chaos Amber causes. Have I lost my mind?

New Favorite Toy

My husband made this toy for our pit bull, Bambi, years ago. I had forgotten we even had it, but my husband suddenly remembered it and found it in the garage. Tug of War is Amber’s favorite thing to do. She’ll bring us toy after toy, wanting you to grab the other end (if you dare with her sharp puppy teeth). She cheats, though, changing her bite and trying to grab YOUR end.

This toy is heavy nylon rope threaded through a length of PVC pipe. The rope is knotted, so it stays where it is. You hold the other end, shielded from the puppy’s teeth. Both of you get LOTS of exercise in short order.

Amber really loves it. She had more energy than my husband, but a good time was had by all.

The is Amber with one of the two KONG bones I got for her recently. She is 5 months old today, 52-1/2 pounds, and is at the vet’s getting spayed this morning. It’s very quiet in the house. It’s almost eerie…

And We Pronounce It Finished!

We just hung up the Sun/Moon Metal Wall Hanging, pronouncing it finally, “Finished.”

It’s about 4 feet across by 2-1/2 feet high. The moon is a separate piece.

We hung it in our office, over my computer area. I learned a lot doing this piece, and look forward to doing more air brush work.

Day One – Dose of Reality!

Cool Animal World

So – This is Day One of Finding-my-Act-and-Getting-it-Together-Again.

I finally did my first yoga session since we adopted our new puppy May 13th. I may have even stopped before that, but it shows how far my intentions have gotten off the track. I did “Neck and Shoulders” today of what I call the “Old Ladies Yoga” DVD. It’s actually called, “Gentle Yoga” put out by Sixtyandme.com. The teacher is Cat Kabira, and she’s a wonderful, accepting, caring person. She encourages you to be the best you can be, accepting where you are and what you are able to do at the given time, and encourages you to KEEP DOING IT.  I had never done yoga, and was intimidated at first, but I started really feeling a difference after several lessons.  There are 7 lessons devoted to particular parts of the body and then an ‘overall flow’ session which takes the ‘best’ moves from each of the other sections. Then there is a 2nd DVD called, “Gentle Yoga Flows.” I’ll work my way up to that one again.

I went back to the MyFitnessPal.com website and signed in for the first time in a LOOOOONG time. I had deluded myself that, since I was cooking low carb and we were trying to find substitutes for the things my husband, a Type II diabetic, missed the most, that sugar-free somehow meant not many calories or carbs.

I have to admit I was pretty shocked when I started to list what I had already eaten, plus planned to eat the rest of the day. I had to really work to juggle things to get back into my under 1200 calories per day and under 40 carbs a day I was doing previously. LOTS of changes and a BIG dose of reality. My husband can continue to eat as he has been, but “I” cannot!

I also had to acknowledge the ground I’ve lost on weight loss and measurements loss. :0(

OKAY. Today is DAY ONE. I’m already doing better than I was yesterday. I’ve acknowledged the error of my ways and I’m stopping the delusions under which I’ve been living for the past few months. I’m listing everything I eat or drink and have gotten back into my yoga practice. I’m moving more otherwise, doing lots of work outside and projects with my husband, plus walking the new puppy several times each day. I started with an average of under 2,000 steps per day. Now my average is 4 or 5,000 per day. I’ll see how much I can add to that.

I’ll try to report back to you each Saturday. I may not give you numbers for awhile, at least until I’m back where I was before my act was ‘lost,’ but I’ll do my best to be better than I was yesterday EVERY day.

Where is my Act and What Have You Done with It?

Bored Panda

I was doing pretty well, eating low carb, losing weight, getting better numbers on my quarterly blood tests with the doctor, learning yoga for old broads and doing it daily. Then ‘something happened,’ and I lost it.

I have umpteen excuses, but no one, including me, is interested.  What is good is that I am FINALLY wanting to get my act back together, rather than ignoring the whole problem and playing Pitiful Pearl.

I do well on my eating until late afternoon and after.

  • I’m going to start drinking a glass of ‘Meta,’ Appetite Control Sugar-Free Orange Zest Dietary Supplement mid afternoons. I also got some sugar-free gum, hoping that if I’m chewing on something, I won’t stuff my face with anything else.
  • I’m going to start using the crock pot again, getting dinner going in the morning when I have the most energy, rather than waiting until after I’m exhausted to fix dinner.
  • I’m starting THIS MORNING – as soon as I finish typing this – doing at least one session of  “old broad” yoga.
  • I’m starting THIS MORNING listing my food and exercise on MyFitnessPal.com as I used to do.
  • I’m starting THIS MORNING drinking more water. I already do it when I’m hot from working outside, but I’ll try to make sure that I drink much more than I am now regardless of my work load.

I HOPE to be able to report to you soon that I am back in the saddle of good eating habits, plus moving more, and starting to get results again. I hope that if you’re having challenges in trying to treat yourself better, you’ll find the motivation to start again with me.

“Thing One and Thing Two”

Amber loves squeaky bones. She has one that is a thin vinyl with large ‘ball’ shapes on the end that has begun to split. She still carries it around and wants to play Tug-O’War with it, but its days are numbered.

I found two large KONG bones on Chewy.com and ordered them. As usual, practically before I put in the order, I got an email that they had shipped and we got them the very next day. :0)

THING ONE:

Kong AirDog – Chewy.com

I chose this one because it’s supposed to help puppies who are teething. It has a felt type cover on it and is supposed to be easier on young gums. My husband gave it to her this morning while we were altogether in the office. She absolutely LOVED it. She carried it around and then went to work on it, much as our pit bull, Bambi, attacked any type of toy – discovering its weakness and proceeding to destroy the toy. Being a KONG toy, she won’t be able to ‘destroy it,’ but the felt cover is quickly being removed. I’ve been letting her work at it awhile, then getting up and cutting off the biggest parts of the now loose felt and throwing them away. I think the cover will all be gone by the end of the day. It squeaks, and she loves that, although she hasn’t personally made it squeak yet. I don’t know if she’ll like it as much once the felt is gone…

THING TWO:

iSqueakBonejw – Chewy.com

This IS a virtually indestructible bone. Amber immediately accepted it, carrying it around and chewing on it. It’s made for the largest dogs, so I don’t actually know if she’s able to make it squeak yet or not, She LOVES anything that makes a noise, so this is bound to last a good long time. I’m also thinking this will make a good toy to throw for her to fetch and hopefully bring back to us…

The Problem with Reading a Good Book

I Love Reading Books via Cathy Ruggiero

I’m in the middle of “Treachery in Death” by J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts). It’s number 32 in the series of  45 she’s written so far. I’m starting to have withdrawal symptoms, knowing that soon I will have caught up with all she has written and have to wait for her to write another.

This is such a good series with strong characters with whom I identify. I care about these people and I love getting to know them better with each book, finding new quirks, new vulnerabilities, new strengths I didn’t know they had. I look forward to the insults traded by Eve and Summerset – a small, building interaction with real, though grudging respect underneath.

I don’t want to put the books down. I’m eager to start each new one, yet I don’t want them to end, either. I again thank my good friend, Marsha, for mentioning that she loved the series, getting me started in a wonderful adventure.

Beautiful Baskets – Take 10

Dodie Ulery – Gladstar 6

I absolutely drool over baskets. I have all kind of excuses at the ready for why I ‘need’ a basket I find. I’m the same way about wooden boxes – new, old…

My husband has learned to help me steer clear of anywhere boxes and baskets are sold.  He does point them out at yard sales, though, and for that I’m truly grateful. :0)

I love the creativity I see from basket makers. It seems that there are endless things one can do to make each one different. For example, look closely at the picture below. I’ve never seen the ruffled edges or rings, or braided rims of these. I think they are stunning.

4th Time is the Charm?

Dodecapod.Com

This is the wall hanging we’re trying to make.

Yesterday I scraped off all the yellow my husband insisted we add. I’m going to paint those parts either black or the background color. When those dry, I told my husband we could add a BIT of yellow to some of the sun flame ends. Hopefully, we can agree this time that the piece is officially finished.

One really nice thing – my husband decided that instead of being forced to buy cans of compressed air to hook to the air brush, he would run a line from our air compressor over to my art table! He spent most of the day on the project yesterday, after we went to Yeagers and bought 30 feet of pvc pipe, some attachments, etc.  He had ordered a regulator from the net, plus 6 feet of hose, plus a DVD on how we are supposed to be using the air brush. We need to get another adaptor at Yeagers today, but the project is almost done!

Please wish us luck?

Ham Radio Tower Update

We’re cleaning up here, almost ready for the tower to be lifted into place and then tied down.

We painted the stakes with Day-Glo Neon Bright Orange paint so they can be seen and avoided from a distance. We tie the guy wires to 3 stakes, each 30 feet away from the tower.

They show up well now, don’t they?

My husband used the chain saw to cut a ‘tunnel’ through heavy briars and trees and other greenery to make a 30 foot long path. He then drilled an 18″ hole and then used the sledge hammer to pound the stake in.

This was hot, heavy, exhausting work, but there was no way around it. The stakes have to be 30 feet from the pad and 45 degrees from each of the other stakes.

The Holmes Erection people were supposed to come Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. No calls, no one came. My husband called them again a few minutes ago. He was transferred to someone who said, “What about we come right now?” My husband said, “GREAT!” and they’re on their way.

He still has to install hardware on each of the stakes to hold the guy wires, but we’re ready other than that. Hopefully we can get this tower up and tied down securely in the next couple of days.

Impromptu Play Date

Yesterday afternoon our good friend, Carla, brought her dog, Nikki, over for an impromptu play date with Amber.

I have to admit it bothered me a bit to let Amber off the leash and off any kind of string. Amber was her usual crazy, exuberant self while meeting Nikki, who is a very well-behaved, sweet fuzzy dog about Amber’s size. A couple of times Nikki had more than her fill of Amber’s rudeness and growled a bit. The hair on Amber’s back stood straight up and she came running to sit under my husband’s chair as we sat on the deck. (Guess who’s “Daddy’s Girl?”) They chased each other around the back yard, ending up lying on the deck.

It was a really good experience for Amber, who hasn’t really interacted with another dog, other than our Molly, who is a crotchety old-lady dog of 12 and is barely staying in the same room with her.  We asked Carla to please bring Nikki back soon so that Amber can continue learning good manners, PLUS have someone to run around the yard with! :0)

Aside –  Amber actually ‘oozed’ up to Molly this morning under my chair to where Molly was lying in her bed under the computer area. Amber was actually sweet for several minutes. Then she started to try to paw Molly and things went downhill from there, but it was a good couple of minutes.

“No Teeth!”

I told you recently that we’re making progress in a lot of areas in training our labrador retriever puppy, Amber. She’ll be 5 months old on Monday, and we’ve had her since she was 10 weeks old.

One thing we’re not making enough progress on is her habit of swinging her head with her mouth open. That doesn’t sound like much on the surface, but the reality is that when we are putting her leash on, for example, she turns her head, catches one arm or the other in her open mouth. I’m learning not to jerk my arm out because that results in more band-aids. I’m learning to say, “NO TEETH!” firmly and hold my arm still.

She’s not trying to ‘bite.’ She just moves quickly side to side with an open mouth, lots of enthusiasm, and sharp puppy teeth. Right now I have two punctures on my left hand, with a nice looking bruise on my left forearm, and two band-aids on my right forearm. Needless to say, I’m not a fast learner, and I’m supposed to be smarter than she is.

We’ll keep working on this, trying to get her NOT to open her mouth when arms and hands are near. It’s a good thing we have a good supply of band-aids…

Chain Sawing a Path

acehardware.com

My husband just came in from trying to chain saw a path from the ham radio tower pad through the woods 30 feet to where he wants to drill a hole through the rocky ground and sledge hammer a guy wire stake.

He said he has to rebuild the chain saw before he can do any more, but ALMOST got as far as he needed to. He is, of course, super hot and exhausted, but he’s resting and drinking fluids. When he has rested, he’ll go up and take a shower, then come down and hopefully rest some more.

The people from Holmes Erection Company in Fort Smith are supposed to call and come this morning to look at what we need to do and where, and give us a cost for the job. Hopefully, this will all work out, because it’s the safest way to stand the tower up and hold it in place while we bolt the end of the base to the metal center of the pad and attach guy wires to the three stakes in the ground.

We’re nearing the end of this project, and the start of what I hope will be some fun for my husband. This is one of his long-time ‘wants.’ We lucked into the 45 foot tower, antenna, rotator and control box, getting the whole package for less than we would have paid normally for the control box alone.

So – the next step is to fix the chain saw and hope the people call and come today to give us an estimate.

youtube.com

We have four 10 foot sections of tower that look similar to this. On the top we have a humongous antenna, called a ‘quad’ type, a square of metal, fiberglass, and two rounds of wire at two different lengths for two different purposes.

I will be out there trying to get pics of the tower going up if these people will do the job for us. Soon now!

People getting creative with food simply delights me. Many times I laugh out loud when I find things like this. I just don’t personally think like this, for some reason. I just fix food and eat it. But my spirits soar when I see the talent and creativity some people put into food presentation.

Rain – Ahhhhhh!

SheKnows

I feel as if I woke up on a different planet this morning. It’s 73 degrees F. and raining! Ahhhhh!  A beautiful beginning to August. A much-appreciated gift from Mother Nature. You can hear all the plants saying, “Ahhhhh!” as you walk around outside.

Looking at the forecast, it looks as though I’ll need to reschedule my planned spraying of weed killer until further notice, since the bottle says to do it on a calm day where there will be no rain for at least 24 hours. I couldn’t be happier about the reason for the delay.

I hope you’re getting some welcome relief from the summer’s heat today.
