Fingers Crossed for Rain

Keeppy

It would be really nice if we get the scattered showers forecast for today and tomorrow. I think we have a 50% chance, and we see some dark clouds gathering from time to time.

It was nice and overcast when my husband and I got home from Lunch Bunch and errands today, so I went to put on my heavy socks and boots, got us each a sweat band and my husband grabbed the electric chain saw. He cut down some of the evergreen branches that were cut off recently and were looking pretty awful, and then he moved to the weed trees!

The minute we got started, the sun came out full force. We lasted about half an hour. We got several weed trees cut down, but we’ll wait until this evening to try to throw them into a pile. We huffed and puffed getting up to the porch again and downed a bottle of water before we even thought about feeling cooler.

We just turned on the a/c out in the shop. I’ll give it an hour and then go out and see what progress I can make with the metal sun/moon wall hanging. I’ll take my camera so I can show you progress thus far.

Meanwhile, fingers crossed for some clouds and rain.

Beware, Weed Trees!

These are what we call, “Weed Trees.” They grow in profusion every year all the way across the edge of the civilized part of our yard, cutting off our view of the valley below.

Some of these are over 10 feet tall, and they grow thickly. You cut down one, and you find 5 others behind it.

The task is pretty daunting, but I’m determined to cut these down and restore our view.

The far left side of the picture shows where I’ve been working. I’ve opened up a small amount of the view.

This is a part that I’ve cleared down to the place where walking – or even standing – is very difficult.

You can see the small area where the tallest weed trees are gone.

I’m giving notice to the rest of the weed trees – it may take me all summer, but I’m going to cut you down!

Propane

You wouldn’t think a guy coming to fill the propane tanks would be fun, would you. We had the best time two days ago when the man came up the driveway.

First, he made sure we wanted fill-ups on both tanks (we have a 1,000 gallon tank for the house and a 250 gallon tank for the shop). Then he turned to his truck to get started and stopped, and started to laugh. He looked at us delightedly and said, “Oh, this is wonderful! I wish all my customers were so creative!”

We told him that it wasn’t OUR creativity, that we had seen this on the Internet and decided we wanted to try it. He said he didn’t care, he thought it was GREAT.

We’re still walking around about 3 inches off the ground from his nice pat on our heads. :0)

Mid Summer Tomatoes

This was a harvest of a few days ago. I harvested again yesterday, but I didn’t get a picture of them.

Each year I’m learning that I don’t know anything about growing tomatoes.

It’s basically a matter of luck. Sometimes I lose the plants because of wonky weather. Other times tomato caterpillars eat them. Sometimes they just die for no reason I can think of. Sometimes things start out great and then ‘something happens’ cutting the season really short.

This year we’ve been lucky so far. My husband and I decided that if  ‘something happens’ and this is the end of our crop for the year, we’ve had a good year. We’ve had delicious tomatoes to enjoy with lunches and dinners, plus more that we could give to some of our friends. To our idea, it doesn’t get any better than this.

  • I learned this year that I’m not supposed to let any leaves of the plants touch the ground. I think cutting off the lower branches helps in disease control.
  • I also learned from my friend, Laufrain, to find suckers. Before the season is over – when my greenhouse will stay some reasonable temperature and not cook me and my plants, I’ll try to get the suckers to grow. Maybe I can have tomatoes in the fall!

A giant came and sat in the middle of my two tomato plants in the nook planter beside the porch. I can see no other reason that there was a huge depression suddenly in the middle of the plants and things were turning yellow.

I decided that I needed to prune all the dead and dying parts off. What was left I fertilized and then sprinkled with Sevin. Since I was harvesting tomatoes yesterday from these plants, and there are more trying to ripen, I’m hoping that my actions yesterday will save the plants and keep them producing. Fingers crossed.

This is the nook planter. As you can see, I had to prune a LOT of the plant on the left.  This is the best I know to do for the poor plants that were looking good only a week ago!

These are the tomato plants in the 8 foot brick planter to the east of the house. If you look carefully, you can see the greenhouse in the background. :0)

I’ll prune these plants tonight. They’re not looking bad, as the nook plants were, but they have leaves on the ground and have limbs hanging all over the place.

I’m learning a lot of what NOT to do again each year. This year, though, I’m beginning to learn more of what TO do!

Amber at 4 Months

We’re giving our ‘no-pull’ leash to a lot of use lately. She has a hard head and – when she sees something she wants – she goes after it full force. If we have her on the regular retractable leash, if we’re not paying strict attention, she’s strong enough to pull us over. She just doesn’t react much to a hard pull with the leash on her collar.

I’m using, and I’m encouraging my husband to use, the special leash that has a strap that goes around her belly, and then practice walking around NOT letting her get far away from us each day. There is plenty of time for her to explore on the many walks we take each day.

While SHE is learning to stay with us and not pull on the leash, WE’RE learning to keep our attention on the dog!

This is Amber in the office with us this morning. As you can see, the poor dog doesn’t have anything to chew on or play with. Poor Amber.

We’re making progress in several areas, though –

  • sitting and waiting when we feed her, not going to the bowl until we say, “Okay.” (We’re also using a hand gesture so she has to meet our eyes before we allow her to eat.)
  • She usually sits when we ask….
  • She and Molly are learning to co-exist (although Amber saw Abby, the cat, and went running after her, causing much hissing and spitting) on the way to the porch for her leash and a walk.
  • She understands hurry up – knowing it means please take care of business with no beating around the bush – particularly if we’re having to stand in a blowing rain as we wait for her
  • She lives for good girl – because it means she gets a treat
  • She comes when she has nothing better to do
  • She is beginning to learn that if she paws all of the water out of the water bowl, she doesn’t have anything left to drink…
  • She is learning that if she calms down, she gets to spend more and more time inside with her family

Weed Trees, Tomatoes, and Wall Hanging

Inhabitat

Today is proving to be a busy, productive day.

This morning we awoke to Amber in distress after having eaten something bad again. She’s like a vacuum cleaner inside or outside, and it’s worth your life to try to keep her from eating TOO many weird things. Anyway, something hadn’t agreed with her, so we were out with the hoses and dog soap first thing. She seemed to be feeling fine otherwise, and ravenously hungry, so we fed her half a can of her lamb/rice sicky dog food. She has done fine the rest of the day, so hopefully this was a temporary problem.

I then got out with the loppers and tackled more weed trees. I actually felt as if I made a bit of progress, even though I only lasted half an hour in the sun, opening up another small section of our view. I’ll keep doing this each morning that I can, and then doing a 2nd session in the evening when the sun is starting to go down. I found some sturdier shoes to wear for this activity, so wasn’t sliding around so much.

I’ve started to seriously prune my tomato plants. I told you it looked like a giant had sat in the middle of the two large tomato plants in the nook planter beside the porch. I’m cutting off dead stuff, pruning leaves or limbs that are hanging way down, etc., trying to make it easier on the plants that are left when I finish. I’ll also put fertilizer on them, plus Sevin to keep the critters off. Before I started the pruning, I was able to harvest several more tomatoes. :0)

This afternoon I was out in the shop working on the metal sun/moon wall hanging. My husband was working on a small roll-around jack, putting on new casters, and we had Molly and Amber out there with us. Amber was driving Molly nuts for a bit, but finally calmed down.

I figured out a method that my husband said looked ‘really good’ on doing the shading that is such a big part of this piece. I took the sponge end off one of my sponge brushes and am using that, instead of a brush, to do the shading. I should be able to get gradations of shading with this, plus – it’s FUN!

About 6:00 or so, depending on the sun, we’ll get back out in the yard. We’ve switched to eating dinner pretty late now in order to give us an hour out there to get something done. (We find that we last a shorter and shorter length of time in the direct sun, and it’s taking us longer to recover than it used to.)

I’ll try to get some pics of the opening view in the back yard, the tomato plants, and the metal wall hanging tomorrow so you can see our works in progress.

I hope you’ve had a good day, too.

I Know it’s Summer, But…

Huffington Post

According to the Heat Index Chart I have on my computer, it feels like 121 degrees F. outside right now. Needless to say, I’m typing at my computer instead of spending a lot of time out there.

I told you that we had a couple of things we had to figure out (the hard way) the other day – the hole for our ham radio tower and our riding lawnmower quitting suddenly.

  • My husband went out again this morning to attack the area he wants the hole for the tower. This time he was able to make a bit more progress, breaking up rock with the shovel. We’re waiting, at this point, for our good friend, Foy, to come with his compressor and rock drill to help us make real progress.
  • We figured out that we needed a new belt for the riding mower. We got one this morning. My husband installed it, and we were able to get the rest of the lawn mowed. The key to remember is when you’re bringing the blades up, move the lever S L O W L Y so it doesn’t throw the belt off.
  • I’ve been trying to learn how to cool off my new greenhouse so that I – and my plants – don’t burn up out there. I’ve read a tone of things, and there is fabric shade, more ventilation, and adding humidity – but the main thing I’ve come away with – living in Arkansas – is that the summer will be my season off to plan, organize, gather materials, etc., rather than to actually try to plant anything in the greenhouse. I’ll use it to start my fall plants and mainly my spring plants. So I’ll switch my thinking, quit trying to do the impossible, and start reading up on when to start seeds for my fall garden.
  • I have learned that there is no easy way to empty and clean Amber’s kiddie pool. The best I’ve come up with, so I don’t completely soak my shoes, socks, and pant legs, is to put on my husband’s big waterproof boots, bring out the car washing broom and the Simple Green, and have at it.

At least we’re making progress on how to – or whether to – attack each problem…

Going out to paint on our new metal wall hanging now!

Arresting Faces – Take 1

I’m fascinated by people. Their faces, in particular, are wonderful. I find it hard not to stare when someone has an arresting face.

One time my husband and I were at an informal office party. I just couldn’t take my eyes off this one young man’s eyes. They were the prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen, before or since. He finally met my eyes, and I was embarrassed to be caught staring at him. Later I met his significant other, who was a friend and co-worker of my husband. I told her what I had done, apologizing for my rudeness. She laughed, saying she had done the same thing. :0)

People can be attractive, but the thing that gets my attention is character. It always shines through like a beacon.

I hope you find these faces as fascinating as I do. At least we can look our fill without being rude.

New Metal Piece

This is the latest piece we’re trying to make in the shop.

My husband has done his part, cutting out the pieces (he cut the moon out separately so that it could be mounted above the rest, making a bit of a 3-D effect), and adding a hanger.

Now it’s my turn. I’m intimidated by this one, because of all the shading. I’m concentrating on doing just the color blocking right now, and then will take a lot of time trying to study the piece on my computer for the intricate shading.

I just hope I can do a reasonable job on it.

Tomato Fairies?

My husband and I did errands, and made them a LOT more fun by taking bags of tomatoes to 4 of our friends.

We took a bag to our hair stylist,Michael;  our good friends the Taylors; our friend Carla; and our friend Nora. Carla and Nora weren’t home, so I texted them to make sure they’ll find them later.

One of the best things in the world is being able to grow something you really love eating. When you have more than you can eat, it’s even more fun to share the wealth with people you love.

Sweet Amber is on the Mend

Amber was hungry this morning, having spent the night in her crate with no problems. I fed her half a can of the ‘sicky food for dogs’ I had on hand for Molly and Bambi. I got it from the vet, and I think it has lamb and rice in it. Anyway, we have found it to be easy on the tummy. Amber sniffed at it for a second – because it was different – and then dived in and ate every bit.

Since she’s been out several times today and has only peed, she is still on the back porch until further notice.

She has enjoyed her walks, though, and has had fun playing with each of us a couple of times, fetching toys and playing tug of war.

I’m hopeful that by tomorrow things will be completely back to normal.

We’ll Just Find a Way

Abraham Lincoln – Zen to Zany via Cathy Ruggiero

We’re ‘finding a way’ on several things around here lately.

  1. We’re trying to dig a hole to act as a base for my husband’s new-to-him 45 foot+ ham radio tower and antenna. He’s called all around trying to find someone who will drill a hole for us. We had someone give us an estimate of $1500! Someone else came over and told us they couldn’t get their equipment to the place we need the hole.

Finally, we called an acquaintance of ours who has helped us do weird things in the past. He’s going to bring over an air powered rock drill that takes a big compressor to run it to drill several holes as deeply as we can through our rock in a 3×3′ group. We’ll put 3 foot stakes at different angles into the holes and then put grout the consistency of slurry in the holes to hold the stakes and our pipe where they are. My husband built a 3′ x 3′ box form for concrete.  When we get that over the pipe and stakes, we’ll start mixing sac-crete in our wheelbarrow and fill up the form. We figure about 20 sacs of sac-crete if each one makes 1 cubic foot of concrete.

Today, my husband went out with a shovel to start the hole for the drilling. He wanted to get the dirt out down to where the rock started. He soon came back to get a pick axe. He swung that twice and was done.

He then decided that at least he could mow the high weeds that would clear a path for the dig-the-holes project. He got that mostly done, but the riding mower was complaining when he was almost finished. We took it back to the shop to discover it had thrown a belt. My husband got that back on.

I was going to take the mower out again to mow the yard. I got to the spot where I wanted to start mowing, but when I pushed the lever forward to engage the blades, the motor started making a bad noise. We ended up pushing it back to the shop to be looked at later.

2. So now we have to ‘find a way’ to get the riding mower working again.

It makes me a bit afraid to start anything else….

An Embarrassment of Wealth

This is what I harvested today, with more ripening on the vines.

The vines themselves aren’t looking that great for some reason. It looks like a giant sat in the middle of the two plants in the nook planter, with collapsing and yellowing vines. The vines are too large to try to prop up without breaking them, so I’ll concentrate on pruning them a bit and adding fertilizer and hope for the best.

The plants in the 8 foot brick planter to the east of the house look better, but not as green or robust as they were. All the plants are putting out good tomatoes, though, so I’ll just do what I can and keep my fingers crossed.

We gave some tomatoes to our friend Carla when she came over the other day. We still have some in the fridge, and now we have this new harvest. GUESS what we’ll be eating!

Loves Water, But Hates Baths

To make a long story more palatable, Amber had a disaster in her crate last night. I don’t know what she ate (she’s like a vacuum cleaner outside, scooping up everything), but we started off the morning hosing down the porch, her crate, washing all the bedding, and bathing Amber for the first time.

She really surprised me. She loves her kiddie pool and rarely passes it without jumping in and at least walking around, drinking water. The reality of a ‘bath,’ though is a whole difference ball of wax. And trying to hold a big wriggling puppy who has ‘stuff’ all over her (to say it the most delicate way possible), juggling the hose, holding onto her collar, and trying to soap her as she twists and turns and flips like a fish is a real trip. Finally, my husband hosed her while I held her collar with one hand and her leg with the other. We didn’t do a great job, and I think I ended up as wet as Amber, but we got the job done.

We squeegeed the porch to get as much water off as possible. Her crate and it’s tray bottom are drying in the sun. Her bedding is in the dryer.

She is acting as boisterous as always, tail wagging furiously. She wants to come in the house, but that isn’t happening. We haven’t fed her, but are making sure she has access to water and that I take her out more often than usual.

I’m relieved that she doesn’t seem to be feeling bad. I feel awful that she spent even a minute in the yucky crate. I’m going to read up on anything else I should be doing for her.

Poor baby.

Fridge Cleaning Day

The News International

I told my husband this morning that we were NOT going grocery shopping until I got the fridges cleaned out. (We have one in the kitchen, one in the pantry, and one in the garage, primarily for drinks.) It has gotten to the point where I’ve bought something, only to find out we already had one or more in the fridge already.  I know this kind of thing doesn’t happen to YOU, but around here, it happens more often than I’d like.

Then there are the ‘mystery packages’ that have been in the fridge so long I don’t remember what they are…. We won’t talk about the things that are LONG past their sell by or eat by dates…And the unmentionable items with FUR….

One example –

My husband had the grocery list out this morning, writing furiously. I asked him if we needed whatever it was today. He said, “Yes.” I discovered he was talking about ‘tub butter.’ I asked, “Did you check the pantry fridge?” He said, “yeah.” I walked back, looked into the fridge, and pulled out THREE tubs of butter. He said, “Well, I guess we don’t need it TODAY…”

Part of the problem is that I’ve started stashing things, rather than putting them carefully away, after grocery shopping. Part of the problem is that, when I make a careful list of things to fix for dinner for the coming week (okayed by my husband) we get excited about eating something else. When this happens too many times, we end up with things going bad. My husband took pride years ago in the many lessons he gave our son had on ‘looking.’ ‘seeing,’ and ‘finding things.’ It seems he’s forgotten what he taught.

I now have just finished the front fridge (the one in the kitchen.) I’m taking a break before diving into the back fridge.  When I finish, our dinners will be a combination of fresh from the garden and things already in the fridge, followed by things in the freezers until further notice!

The World is an Exciting Place

Amber was 4 months old on July 7th. We’ll take her in to the vet’s around the 20th to get her weight, and then she’s scheduled to be spayed on August 7th, when she is 5 months old.

  • Yesterday Amber discovered a turtle! She crept up slowly on it, sniffing. Then she jumped straight up in the air with a yelp. I thought maybe the turtle had nipped her, but she was just excited. She tried to bite the shell, but it was too big. I FINALLY got her to continue with our walk, but it was a close thing.
  • She chased a dragonfly that was dancing in the tall weeds to the east of our house. She jumped and jumped, trying to dance and fly, too.
  • She played in the kiddie pool. She cavorted around, as usual. Suddenly she jumped up – I guess to get out – but slipped instead, going completely beneath the water for the first time. She came up laughing and shaking off the water.
  • She TRIED to bite at a red wasp – like the one that stung me last week – but I steered her in the opposite direction as quickly as possible.
  • She learns what things are by chewing or eating them. Unfortunately, this results in some less-than-tasty mouthfuls, although we differ on which is which at times…
  • We’re learning that, unless she changes quite a bit on maturing, she is NOT going to be a watchdog. She greets everyone as a long-lost brother or sister, trying to get as close to them as possible, licking and tasting as much as they’ll allow. She might smother someone in love, or – when she’s bigger – sit on someone, but happily would welcome an intruder in, showing him her toys.

The Writers’ Circle via Cathy Ruggiero

Today has been the perfect day to read, fall asleep, and read again.

I’m enjoyed Book # 22 of Nora Robert’s “In Death” series.  I only have 4 more in house, so I just ordered 6 more. Such richness to be in the middle of a series I love, having more, being able to order more – I won’t worry about withdrawal symptoms until I get into the mid 30s…

Beautiful Rainy Day

Zen to Zany

We’ve had  a very rainy, restful day.

We made a brief trip to get mail and run errands, but mostly we’ve just enjoyed the rain and the relatively cool day because of it.

I got a small start on painting the sun and moon wall hanging today. I’m just trying to get the basic color blocking done first. I have to admit I’m intimidated by all the shading needed on this piece. I’ll go slowly and do the best I can.

Otherwise, Molly and Amber are finally beginning to call a truce to the hostilities around here. They’re definitely moving toward détente.

Here are Molly and Amber on the dog bed in the utility room. Molly definitely has a defensive posture, but Amber is slowly making her realize Amber doesn’t want to hurt her.

Amber moves in slowly. If she moves too quickly, Molly snarls a bit.

Here is a meeting of the minds (and noses) – at least for a bit. Each day Amber is taking less time to calm down after the initial coming into the house chaos.

Quiet, restful day here. I hope you’re enjoying a wonderful Saturday, too.
