A Productive Sunday

Wild Ammo

The grocery shopping is done. The food is put away. Lunch has been fixed and eaten. The lawn is mowed. The leaf blower has cleaned up sidewalks and the driveway pad. I didn’t make it out to the garden, or even start the weed whacking, but I’ll get more done tomorrow.

It was a beautiful day, too, with lots of bright sunshine, a high in the mid-80’s with low humidity. A perfect day to work outside.

We’ll have a relaxing evening at home tonight, maybe enjoying some of the evening on our deck. My husband is taking a nap in his chair in the living room while one of our cats sleeps on my lap as I type.

It just doesn’t get much better.

2nd Annual Greenwood AR ArtFest on the Walking Trail

Greenwood ArtFest

After running some errands yesterday, my husband and I took a few minutes to see the 2nd Annual Greenwood ArtFest. It was on the walking trail, part of which goes behind two bank, the court-house, some restaurants, and more on the south side of the square.

The city has created a walking trail that now goes almost all the way around the main part of the city. Not only are there nice sidewalks, there are benches every so often so you can stop and rest. There are trees, birds, squirrels, and flowers, too, so it’s a nice feast for the eyes as well as a great place to get good exercise.

There were lots of artists. Each had a tent and displayed their artwork. The only thing that could have been better was that the wind might not have been quite so energetic.

I saw several artist friends.  I got to hug necks and visit a bit. My husband and I enjoyed the variety of artwork being displayed. Some teenagers were working on string art, and had some for sale. There were several artists displaying original paintings. There were artists who made jewelry. Some were showing prints of their work. One artist specialized in leather and wood. One lady did 3-D carvings in horizontal cuts of  tree wood, with the ring of the tree being the ‘frame.’ One of my friends was showing some of her hand-painted gourds, some decorated bottles, her original Fort Smith AR Civil War paintings, and more.

I was delighted to see so many talented folks in one place.

I’m going to see if I can make some small  ‘people and critters’  out of screws, nuts, bolts, and small scraps – with the idea that I might participate next year. I’m excited to dive in and see what I can come up with! :0)

Did IT!

This is our new-to-us riding mower. My husband put a different, more serious muffler on it, but it’s still really loud.

Since he is recovering from 1st-eye cataract surgery, we decided that “I” should handle the mowing and the weed whacking until further notice. (Or about the middle of June, I think).

We keep the mower in the shop. I asked my husband to show me again how to check that there is enough gas, the oil level,  plus which levers did what again, since this is not my strong suit. I was then able to put it into reverse, get it out of the shop, turn it around and start riding toward the yard. I got the blades going after determining grass cut height.

It took me a good hour, since I put the speed on the lowest available for quite awhile until I felt more comfortable. I also told my husband I would weed whack the outer edges of the ‘civilized’ area along our back yard because the mower really leaned and I wasn’t comfortable with that at all.

I got the front, side, and back area mowed, plus the area between the driveway and our trio of brick planters, plus the area between the driveway pad and the shop, drove it back into the shop and turned it of.. HOORAY!

I didn’t run into anything. I didn’t dump myself off with the mower on top of me. I started to feel more comfortable this time.

I’m drinking water and taking a break, but feeling empowered. After I cool down, I’ll get out the leaf blower and clean things up.

The Fedex Man

Fedex

Last evening our Fedex man brought us a delivery.

He jumped out of the truck with a serious look on his face. He looked at me and said, “You should sell this stuff.”  When I looked a bit blank, he added, “My wife and I just joined an artists group and they’re going to have shows. You and your husband should bring your artwork and sell it. I bet it would sell really well.”

Well, THAT made our day! :0)

We discovered that his wife is into interior design and furniture, and apparently has a real gift for decorating. But then he started talking about our critters again. I told him that it was harder and harder to find scrap metal. We used to be able to go to a junk yard and prowl around, gathering things that looked interesting. We did that at auto salvage places, too. Now, due to liability issues, no one will let you prowl around anymore. Sometimes we luck into things, but it really has limited our critter making.

He told us he would be on the lookout for interesting scraps and would bring them to us when he found them.

Isn’t he wonderful?

Happy Saturday!

Bored Panda

Good afternoon!

It’s a happy day at the Lewises in Greenwood, Arkansas.  The sun is shining brightly and the day is full of possibilities.

We’re going to check into the cost of materials for building a 12′ x 14′ greenhouse on the east side of our property.  Our friends, the Taylors, are building the Taj Mahal of greenhouses. It’s 2 stories and build onto the back of their house.

Ours is a DIY plan with wood, pvc pipe and sheets of plastic. I would love an area that is protected from our cats and the weather to start seeds, nurturing seedlings until they’re ready to transfer to the garden, etc.

My husband found some plans, loaded them onto his Kindle, and then was able to print the pages so we could put them into a binder.

How to Build a Backyard Greenhouse – A DIY Practical Guide by Tristan Trubble.

Care2

This picture isn’t our plan, but the picture gives you an idea of what we’re thinking about doing. We’re buying all the materials, rather than a kit that is MUCH more expensive.  Ours will be made of wood, PVC pipe and plastic sheeting. We’ll have 9 ‘ribs’ of pvc pipe, rather than the 7 you see here.  We ordered an exhaust fan on the net this morning, whose vents open when the temperature is 74 degrees F., and open FULLY at 104 degrees. There are a lot of details not really covered in the plans, but we’ll work them out as we go.

We wandered around our land, rejecting spot after spot due to the fact it wasn’t flat enough, or caused problems for one reason or another. We settled on an area to the east of our tomato planter and the clematis plants on the east side of our property. We can run water and electricity to it without much hassle.

My husband, as usual, wanted to go ahead this morning and start buying parts at our local Yeagers Hardware store. Since he’s going to have a 2nd cataract surgery hopefully May 16th, I pointed out that it would be at least June before we would be in a position to start this.

So far, we bought the fan and also called the wonderful guy who helps us with our 650 foot driveway when it needs to be bladed. We left a message on his answering machine that we want him to clear a 15 x 15 plot of land to the east of our house for the greenhouse, plus blade our driveway when he can arrange to do it.

I’m going to type a list to give to the guy at Yeagers, and then another list for all the other stuff we need to get for the project. I’ll also read the manual that goes with the plans, ask my husband to read it, and then hopefully we can iron out any problems before we actually do much more on the actual construction.

I would love to be able to give serious effort to growing seeds well before the next season starts, having plants ready for transfer for the fall garden, for example.

Wish us luck!

Tomatoes 5/5/2017

Since the rains came and the sun started shining, the tomatoes have really grown. I spent some time today tying up branches, trying to get them to climb the trellises my husband made. This is the smaller tomato plant in what we call “The Nook” beside the porch and behind the house.

This is the larger of the two nook tomato plants, planted about two weeks before the smaller one.

Here are the two together.

We have six more tomato plants in the brick planter we also converted to square foot garden plants, with Mel’s Mix. We bought these at three different times, again trying to expand the season and spread out when the tomatoes ripen a bit.

You can really see the difference between the plants here.

Finally, I just planted two grape tomato plants in the main garden a week or so ago. I’ll take pics of those when I start repairing what the rains did to the plants out there tomorrow.

My mouth is already watering! I saw some sweet yellow blooms here and there today…

Nice Way to Start the Day

Save Trees Save Earth via Cathy Ruggiero

Cathy Ruggiero and I have never met face-to-face. She allowed me to show of her artwork on Creative Artworks and we became friends.

Now we’re on Facebook together and we share stuff all the time. We share so many of the same values and react the same way to a given thing. I look forward to her posts because – after sheer enjoyment or appreciation, or both – I save a LOT of them to share with you.

Sometime, before this life is over, I hope we can meet. If not, we’ve shared a friendship and meeting of the souls.

Sunshine!

HD Walpapers Rocks

The sun has come out to play today! Wheeeeeee! We had almost forgotten what the sun looked like here in Arkansas. Some of our counties have received over 1 FOOT of rain in the last couple of weeks.  Thankfully, though we are susceptible to hail, high wind, and tornadoes, floods are not a problem on top of our ridge line.

Now that our errands are finished for the day, I’m looking forward to getting out to our garden. The raised bed garden with Mel’s Mix is designed to drain well, but with so MUCH water, cool temperatures, and almost no sunshine, I’ll probably be spending several days working out there to get the plants happy again.

I’ll take pics when I see what’s what.

In the meantime, I wish YOU a nice, sunshiny day, too!

Wonderful Gift

Animal Jam Wiki Wikia

I had a surprise gift this morning and I’m still feeling WONDERFUL.

Our son lives and works in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He arranged for a chat program that is very secure before he left, so we type messages to each other regularly. Skype doesn’t work well at all for us. We’re not sure if it’s our Internet connection, or what, but we gave that up a long time ago, when he was in China for the first time.

Today, he asked me if I had earbuds and a microphone. I was scurrying around, trying to find a microphone, since we packed that up when Skype didn’t work.

When I got back to the screen with one, he had found a program (appear.in – join the room) that allowed me to “join” him in a video chat. I clicked “join”, and then it asked me if I wanted to use the available video and audio. I said “yes,” and there was our son!

I’ve been grateful that – if we’re both up at the same time (there is 12 hours difference) – we can type back and forth to each other, but to actually be able to see his face gave me such joy. I love his face!  We had a chance to really catch up on what’s happening with each other, to laugh together.

At Christmas it was a year since we’ve seen him. We’ve offered to pay for tickets for him to come visit, but pride rears its ugly head, so we don’t know when we’ll see him. Now that we have this wonderful video chat program, we’ll be able to talk and actually SEE him more often. I haven’t been this happy in a long time. :0)

Guess What!

Recommended Key Words – Gravy and Biscuits – Playing in the Rain

It’s raining again!

I couldn’t find how much rain we’ve had in April, but it’s more than enough. After today, the forecast looks sunny and good for the rest of the week!

I was planning to go clean up our garden today, but I’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

Happily, we were just getting home from our followup appointment for my husband’s first cataract surgery when the front started to move in, making the sky almost black and the heavy rains starting. We took advantage of the warm, dry house with the rain pouring outside, each cuddled up under throws in our recliners, and took naps. AHHHH!

The rest of the day will be quiet for us – also a welcome thing with the stress of getting ready for the surgery this past week. All is going perfectly, with the exception of having to insist my husband wear the eye protector last night. The first thing the surgeon asked was where it was this morning…. He has to wear it until Friday and then we prepare for the 2nd eye surgery. I’m grateful that all has gone so well.

I hope that the weather where you are is just what you need and that you have a wonderful day.

Books and Cats

Life with Cats via Cathy Ruggiero

I’m trying to keep an eye on my husband, since he keeps trying to do his normal activities right after cataract surgery this morning. One of the things he’s doing is reading and working on the computer – after taking off the eye protection he’s supposed to wear until tomorrow.

I’m quietly moving with him, to the office and then to the living room.

One of the enjoyable things I’m doing today is enjoying Book # 10 (of 45) of the Nora Roberts “In Death” series. I love the strong female detective, her husband Roarke, her partner Peabody, and all the other characters who move with her from one crime to the next. I feel now as if I know them. I care what happens to them. I still haven’t been able to figure out who the ‘bad guy’ is in any of the books.

As I read, one of our two cats is in my lap, rubbing up against the book, wanting attention.

I love being able to spend time this way.

Adrenaline is Gone

LifeBuzz

We’re both pretty sapped. We were up at 5:00 a.m. (the middle of the night for us) in order to get to the hospital by the time we were supposed to check in. We weren’t exactly sure which part of the hospital we were supposed to go to – other than “OutPatient Services” – or where we were supposed to check in, once we found that – other than ‘3rd floor.’

We got through the surgery very well. My husband wanted to stop at Denny’s for breakfast on the way home. The adrenaline I had been building up for several days only allowed me three hours of sleep last night. My husband basically shows up – THEN asks if we have the paperwork we need, where are we supposed to go, etc. It’s a good thing I’m good at handling details….

The adrenaline left soon after we got home. We both took naps this morning.

My husband is doing really well, but it’s amazing that he’s alive at all. He came in while I was folding the laundry, asking if I were planning to ‘beat him up today.” I told him that it wasn’t in my plans. Then he showed me that he had taken off the eye protection the surgeon put on him, that he is supposed to keep on all day today, tonight while he’s sleeping, to be removed by the surgeon tomorrow.

He said he didn’t need it and it was hampering his efforts to read, work on the computer, etc. I’m afraid I yelled at him a bit. I got him to agree to put the protector back on at bedtime – but he isn’t great at following rules he thinks are ‘stupid’ or ‘unwarranted.’

He may not have to worry about whether the eye surgery worked or not…

Contest

When I had my first cataract removed in 2012, my husband kindly took a picture of me while I slept, then put it in juxtaposition with a picture of MadEye McGurk from Harry Potter.

This morning my husband had his first cataract removed this morning. When we got home, I took HIS picture, because it’s only fair.

He came through the surgery just fine. We go back to the surgeon’s office early tomorrow morning to see if he can get the other cataract removed in two weeks.

It’s up to you – Which of us  looks more like MadEye McGurk?

The First Hummingbird is Spotted Today!

All About Birds

This isn’t THE hummingbird we saw this morning, but it is the kind we see most often around here – A ‘Rufous,’ I believe it’s called.

We were eating breakfast when the sweet hummer came in for a quick drink. He was gone so fast my husband didn’t get a chance to see him.  It was only 56 degrees F. at the time, so he wasn’t even thinking of playing in our new hummingbird bird bath, but I hope he at least looked at it and will consider it the next time he comes.

My friend, Carla, assured me that hummingbirds weren’t due here until the 14th, so obviously this little guy didn’t get the memo. I’m glad we had fresh nectar for him so he could tank up.

Have you seen hummingbirds yet? Do you think they actually will enjoy a birdbath, or was someone just playing with us when we saw a picture of a gazillion of them playing in the water on Facebook?

Happy May 1st!

Our Continent – Our Culture – WordPress.com

I can’t remember where I was or how old I was when I actually got to do this one year, but I remember it was loads of fun. I vividly remember the excitement, the laughter, the delighted faces of everyone around me, young and old. I regret I am unable to give credit to the kind people who made this possible for me. It was the one and only time I did the Maypole Dance, and it was a high point in my life.

I looked up how one is actually supposed to do a Maypole Dance, since I don’t remember any particular rhyme or reason.

1
Put the Maypole together. Unless you have access to a Maypole that has already been made for the purpose, you will need to make your own. Find a tall pole and attach ribbons or strong streamers at the top of the pole. These ribbons will need to be an even number, the same number of ribbons as there are dancers.

2
Divide the dancers into two groups. For example, you might have them count off one, two, one, two, one, two around the circle, or A, B, A, B, etc. The A’s can go clockwise and the B’s go counterclockwise. The dancers go alternately right and left of the dancers going in the opposite direction.

3
Develop a pattern. The pattern the dancers should keep in mind is over, under, over, under, over, under etc.
On the count of “over”, the dancer raises his ribbon slightly so the dancer coming in the opposite direction can duck under his ribbon.
On the count of “under” the dancer ducks under the ribbon of the dancer coming in the opposite direction.

(Source – Wiki – How To Do Anything)

No excuses now for not stopping and participating, just in case you see a Maypole Dance going on. :0)

Happy May 1st to you!
