Fingers Crossed

123RF.com

We’re taking a road trip today to see if we can find a new puppy for our family.

My husband and I learned a long time ago – the hard way – that if we get a new puppy quickly, particularly when we feel our guts have been ripped out by the loss of a treasured pet, we are FORCED to reach out to meet the needs of a new little animal, forced to react, forced to hug, feed, water, walk, and with that new bond, we start to heal. We’re still really sad, and will miss Bambi, of course, forever, but we don’t go deep inside ourselves – morose – shutting everything and everyone out.

We are hopeful that we will bring home a sister for Molly, our cocker spaniel/schnauzer cross. Molly is constantly looking for her brother Bambi, and there is no way to explain to her why he is no longer here. We’re hoping that a new addition to the family will give us all new focus, bringing us all closer to heal together while welcoming a new face.

I would adopt most ANY animal, if left to myself, ending up in the newspaper as the crazy woman on the hill who has a gazillion animals. My husband is a harder sell, and he will make the decision today. It’s his turn. I chose Smoke, our newest adoption, a cat who has added a lot of richness to the family. It’s his turn to NAME her, too. I gave him a list of names I had come up with to consider, but we’ll need to see her first, and then he’ll decide.

If we’re successful, I’ll post pics of our new fur baby later today.

Fingers crossed.

Getting The Lard Off Progress (?) Report – May 12, 2017

YouTube

I have an impressive number of excuses for why I fell off the wagon on my efforts to get the lard off, but I’m happy to tell you I’m back in the saddle now and have re-lost some of my re-gained weight.

Life Lessons by AwePost

I’ve been on my ‘start-again’ regimen for about a week now and am finally seeing some progress.

I have been doing fine until dinner, and then my appetite is limitless. I’ve beem disgusted with myself.

I found something that is helping, both physically and as a support. It’s called, “Meta Appetite Control Dietary Supplement.” It’s made by the makers of Metamucil. It’s orange flavored and sugar free. It’s 11 grams carbohydrates with 6 grams fiber ( 5 grams usable carbs per serving. )

They suggest that you put two rounded teaspoons into 8 or more ounces of water and drink it with meals up to 3 times daily.  Just having it available is helping me. I’ve only had to make two servings during the week – once between a lunch and dinner, and once when I was up in the middle of the night ready to eat everything in sight. Otherwise, just seeing the can on the counter is motivation NOT to need it, if that makes any sense.

I’m hoping that getting my appetite under control again, plus getting back into my good exercising routine will get me on the road to good progress reports for you again.

I’ve been doing a lot of work in the yard lately, so I’m plenty ‘active,’ but I need to work in time for more regular exercise, as well.

My husband has surgery next week, but once that is over, I’ll try to get my days into more of a routine.

Much appreciation for your support!

Bambi

We just got home from the vet, having Sweet Bambi euthanized. He would have been 14 years old next month, so he had a good, long life. We referred to him as ‘the vicious pit bull,’ but he was one of the sweetest dogs we’ve ever known, getting along with Molly, our schnauzer/cocker spaniel cross; Abby, our fat cat we adopted from a newspaper ad years ago; and Smoke, our newest adoptee that we got from the vet. All three routinely insulted him by taking possession of one of the dog beds and daring him to try to share it.

At his peak, he was 95 lbs. He loved to go outside and explore on our 8 acres of land. He pranced, holding his tail up and wagging it like a metronome. My husband taught him to get his dish, and then to get Molly’s dish – putting each into my husband’s hand. Bambi and Molly sat together in the pantry after the food was put down, waiting for the “OK” signal to eat.

My husband said, “He gave no quarter, nor asked for it,” resulting in several trips to the vet for repair. He would flip his head, flapping his ears so hard that you could HEAR the crack of it. He burst a blood vessel in one that swelled up, requiring surgery. He then did it to the other ear.

I don’t know if it was this month of the ears repair, or another time when he was attacked by ‘whatever’ and we had to run him to the vet for emergency help, that he was declared ‘Patient of the Month.’

I’m very grateful that we have kind, caring vets (Dr. Singer and Dr. Martin) to give our pets whatever they need. Putting an animal to sleep is a very hard thing, but everyone made the procedure as bearable as possible.  The vet tech, Alisha, who helped Bambi when he had his emergency visit helping to control his bleeding until the vet arrived, was there today, right by Bambi’s side, holding his hand. Both she, and the vet, Dr. Martin, hugged me.

Bambi is now playing in Doggie Heaven. I hope he’s found our other pets who have gone before him. And I hope they all have enough room on the bed to rest together.

Nut and Bolt Art – Take 2

I told you recently that I was thinking of seeing what – if anything – I could add to the world of nut and bolt art.  For this I would need to learn to weld. We have the equipment. We have the nuts and bolts and other assorted ‘stuff.’ I’m doing a survey of what is out there, and I have to tell you, I’m getting intimidated.

The people creating this stuff are really talented. They take a pile of stuff and create something that makes you smile. Their ideas are wonderful and their talent is great. I’m getting a bit intimidated, but I’m going to continue my research and then get out to the shop and see what I can come up with that’s different.

Meanwhile, here’s more of the wonderful things I’ve found –

Pineapple Glazed Pork Loin Recipe

I really can’t say enough about Dana Carpender. Between her 300 15-Minute Low-Carb Recipes and her Slow-Cooker recipes, I have really all I need for our efforts to eat low carb. She uses down-to-earth, rather than super-fancy, hard-to-find ingredients. I really like that.

I can either start something in the crock pot early or I can opt for a dinner than takes about 15 minutes to put together. I really like that, too.

A couple of nights ago I tried a recipe from the 15-Minute book called, “Pineapple Glazed Pork Loin.” My husband immediately declared it a winner and asked if we could have the leftovers the next night. :0)

“Pineapple Glazed Pork Loin.”

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 pound boneless pork loin, cut about 1/2″ thick*
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons canned, crushed pineapple in juice
  • 2 teaspoons cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons Splenda
  • 1 teaspoon spicy brown or Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic or 2 cloves garlic, crushed

*Feel free to use thinnish pork chops, instead.

Directions:

  • First, pound the pork until it’s about 1/4 inch thick. Heat the oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat and saute’ the pork, covering it with a tilted lid. Give it 4 to 5 minutes per side.
  • While the pork’s browning, combine the pineapple, vinegar, Splenda, mustard, soy sauce and garlic. When the pork is browned on both sides, add this mixture to the skillet. Turn the pork over once or twice to coat. Put the tilted lid back on the pan, cook for 1 to 2 minutes, turn, re-cover, and give it another 1 to 2 minutes. Remove to serving plates and scrape any remaining liquid from the pan over the pork before serving.

Yield:

2 servings, each with 4 grams of carbohydrates, a trace of fiber, and 22 grams of protein.

MY NOTE: Since I served a veggie and a salad, we were happy to eat half the pork loin for one meal and then the rest as leftovers the 2nd night. My husband has already asked if I have another pork loin on the grocery list. :0)

His grade – “YUMMY!”

Lazy

Lazy Days Wallpaper – Fanpop

I was GOING to work in the garden again and do more weed whacking.

We got up early today

  1. to take Molly to the groomer’s, and
  2. to go to my husband’s appointment with the eye doctor

We have his second cataract surgery scheduled for the 16th of this month. His right eye (first surgery) is doing well, except that my husband was admonished for insisting we stop putting in the drops. (We started again when we got home).

I fixed us some lunch and then fell asleep in my chair, waking up just a few minutes ago.

I SHOULD get out and do the weed whacking I wanted to do around the garden, but I’m feeling super-lazy.

I think I’m going to declare this an official working-outside-day-off.

I feel a little bit guilty – but not enough to actually go out and DO anything….

Meet “Sedona”

I told you awhile back that we lost one of our three Rio Samba rose bushes. We went to the local nursery to get a replacement to find that of the 15 plants they had gotten in, none was left. We walked around the variety they had, both deciding we liked this one. It’s called, “Sedona.”

It started its first bloom today, the buds opening quickly this morning. It’s a nice contrast to the yellow and coral Rio Samba and we hope it’s happy with us.

Sleek Molly

We took Molly to be sheared like a sheep this morning. She’s a schnauzer/cocker spaniel cross and is naturally VERY fuzzy, with THICK hair.

We live on a ridge line on a wooded piece of land. This time of year, Molly runs out to greet the day, full of enthusiasm, barking as if to say, “Look out world! Here I come!!!” She returns a few minutes later with her whole snout, mustache, and beard black, having stuck her nose into someone else’s business. She also has her entire face and head full of burrs. I spent half an hour or so, carefully combing out the burrs, then washing her face and hands (which are also black from digging to get into someone else’s business), and then she wants to go out again…

I explained to the vet’s assistants what our lives are like, asking them to stress to the new groomer Matt (who’s quite a hunk, BTW) that the cute eyebrows, mustache and beard of last time would have to go.

He did a beautiful job. Now I have a CHANCE to undo the damage shes does when she dashes outside to do her worst.

I THOUGHT, when we got Molly, that she would be a sweet, feminine, lap dog. Well, I did get the sweet and the lap dog, but you should never underestimate her ego. She’s a dog’s dog – full of life, not afraid to confront – at least by barking – anything in her territory.

Now I can be sure she’s free of ticks, fleas, and can comb out the burrs pretty quickly. She still hates to get her face and hands washed.

Sleek Molly.

Harvest May 8, 2017

Families Online

Cold temperatures and nearly torrential rains for over a week followed by intense sunshine wreaked havoc in my square foot garden. I spent an hour weeding, pruning, and harvesting today, and another hour cleaning up what I harvested. I’ll probably do one more session out there before the day is gone.

Just at the wrong time for the broccoli and cauliflower. I found a bit of harvest-able broccoli, but the cauliflower was granular-looking and dry. The rest of the main broccoli plants had bolted, so I had to cut those off and hope for some more shoots off the main plants.

The romaine lettuce really surged, showing me that next time I plant this, I’ll only have one plant per square. When they touch another plant, the outside leaves get yucky and croak. I have a lot of pruning to do to get these plants happy again.

The spinach went nuts, as well. I harvested a bunch today, cleaned it, and froze it.

The red leaf lettuce plants look like small BUSHES now. I’ll tackle them tomorrow. I harvested the rest of the radishes and will start another two squares of seeds soon.

I’ll need to try to either get up earlier and get right out to the garden, or plan to work out there right before sundown. The sun is really intense and this old lady gets more than enough in an hour’s time.

I feel bad when the garden isn’t at its best. It’ll probably take another day or two before it is under control again. My goal will be to have it done, plus the weed whacking of the yard finished, before the rain comes again Thursday.

Maligned Clowns

Wikipedia

I’m always sad when a word changes its meaning – due to the population using it differently – and I no longer feel comfortable using it. One example – the distortion causes children’s poems to be suddenly ‘inappropriate for children,’ or you can’t read one aloud anymore without the laughing killing the whole point of it.

I understand that if a language isn’t changing, it dies. But, sometimes, the changes kill wonderful memories, too.

I’ve always loved clowns. Like mimes, they make you see a ‘story’ without saying a word. Truly gifted, they can make you laugh or cry.

babble

But clowns have taken on a sinister aspect, due to movies, weird books, and demented souls who think it’s funny to dress up as a beloved clown and then do horrible things.

Heavy.com

I just looked for images of clowns on the net, and could only find THREE I thought fit MY image of a clown. Most were trying to be frightening or sickening.

I don’t want to accept this change. I’ll just remember when clowns were sweet, gifted, and a joy to people everywhere.

String Art – Take 17

String art is 3-dimensional by its nature, but this takes it to a whole new level. I’ve never seen string art on top of string art to add things like the cute glasses, eyes, nose and mouth, and bow tie. I love it!

pinterest.com

I can’t tell if the artist used string, wrapping it around nails like you would do if you were doing embroidery, or if the bubbles are buttons. Either way, I love the creativity.

And THIS is simply unbelievable.

Nuts and Bolts Art – Take 1

I’m thinking about trying to make some critters using nails, nuts, bolts, screws, and other small stuff. The first step is seeing what has already been created, and then seeing what spin I can put on the art, if any. I’m having a lot of fun seeing the wonderfully creative things people have created!
