I’m happy to say that I am FINALLY back on the getting the lard off road! I lost my way for a bit, but – with the addition of yoga poses done daily – I’m starting to lose again.
My husband – who is a newly-diagnosed diabetic – and I are eating a low carb diet, substituting sugar-free candy, pudding, and tea for the things he’s missing the most.
The biggest change is that I’m doing two sections of my yoga DVD set daily. Today, for example, I’m doing “Joint Mobility” and “Overall Flow.”
Yesterday I ALMOST skipped the yoga because I had some sore muscles. I went ahead, grimly, and found that my soreness disappeared! Let this be an ongoing lesson for me!!!!!
I’ve been doing the two sections daily for a bit over a week now, and I decided to see whether my measuring tape was impressed or not.
It was! To date, I’ve lost 21.75 inches and 40 pounds. (Some of these pounds have been regained and now lost again. I’m looking forward to breaking into new territory soon.)
Yesterday I was doing the ‘fold-yourself-into-a-paper-airplane-and-twist’ pose. I end up with my leg bent and twisted over to the side across my body with my knee on the floor. The opposite arm is stretched up above my head. See what I mean about folding yourself into a paper airplane?
Anyway, you get into the pose, holding it while you breathe in deeply into the stretch, and then exhale several times. When I was doing the last deep breath, my fingers touched the floor! Just barely – but they did!!!!! Only on one side, and only for a second, but HOOORAAAAAY!
The only other exercise I’m doing right now is sitting on the exercise ball while watching TV. This is supposed to be good for building up my ‘core’ muscles and strengthening my balance. Since I need both, I spend some time bouncing around each evening.
I’m going right now to do my yoga sessions.
Hope YOUR day is good, too.

I did not realize your husband was diagnosed with diabetes, I am sorry to hear that. If you did write about it ,I either missed it for completely forgot !! You are on the right diet and we will be joining you in late Jan. We just have too much going on through the end of the year and part of January to start and set ourselves up for failure !! My endrocrinologist said low carb is the only way to cure diabetes and he eats that way too. I honestly cannot wait to start, but I just feel it is smarter to wait until the chaos is over around here, one kid and her family moving out, another kid moving in , also out of town oldest son and new wife coming in for almost two weeks for the holidays and I always bake a lot for people for Christmas. So, We are trying to eat better and work on portions and then we will get back on low carb early next year . Also, tired of giving away food when I start a diet, want to finish up what is in the house, which is a lot !! So, I know, excuses, but they are valid to me, but once we are back on, I feel confident we will do great and feel better !!
You did so great alone, having him on it with you will really make it a lot easier on you !! I am so happy to hear how well you are doing !!!! I look forward to working hard to try to catch up with you !!! I have never tried yoga, that sounds interesting too. I have heard so many good things about it and I am impressed what you can do !!

My husband has been in denial for awhile, but he’s finally taking it seriously. He’s been eating low carb with me, but then eating his normal sweets until recently. A visit with our doctor finally helped him understand what his body is, and is not, doing. He’s doing great now. His number was 143, the best ever, on Monday. The yoga is really helping me. The whole emphasis on this DVD set is that however much – or little – you can stretch isn’t important. It’s just doing what you can every day. I got sore and almost skipped a day, but the practice did away with my soreness! I can’t believe it. I won’t ever look forward to exercise, but this “Gentle Yoga” set is worth its weight and more in gold. Let me know how you’re doing when you get started.

I need to take it more seriously as well. Your husbands story kind of hit me in the face. I have known for years I am in danger of diabetes, on the cusp, with prediabetes. I decided since I am not comfortable starting a strict low carb before the chaos is over, I will do a modified one and eat mostly low carb and eat the carbs when it is hard to eat the way I want. I think we can stay pretty strict most of the time, we know how to do it . I had wanted to finish up some stuff in the house, but I think whatever is left by the end of the month, I will just give to our oldest daughter. There should not be much by then. We will enjoy our holiday and then see how strict we can be until Christmas eve and I might just make us up all our low carb desserts, but we will have our traditional Christmas eve dinner, tamales, homemade brown rice spanish rice, and home made beans. Then, after our son and wife leave to go home on the 27th, we can be all in at that point. I am happy with that plan and eager to get my diet where it needs to be. We will probably always keep our Christmas Mexican dinner, but the rest of the year there is not much we do that we cannot make low carb. I just know we are both sick and tired of being , not sick, but tired !!! Once we get the weight off my danger of diabetes is gone, and at that point, we may switch to a mediterrian diet at that point.
I will look into yoga when I do not have such a big stomach as I could not do much right now , but we are going to get back to the gym and then once I have off about 60 pounds, I will get your advice about the yoga, but I do love the idea of sitting on the ball to watch tv and may start that one once the kids move out !! Not sure it would survive three little girls messing with it , lol !!

I didn’t mean to ‘hit you in the face’ with my husband’s denial – just put it out there as what was happening with us. We all have issues, meeting the needs of others, realities that need to change before we can get serious. I blew it last night when I couldn’t sleep, and am paying for it today, not feeling well. :0) Start when you can, give yourself some slack, and try to take each meal one at a time. I hope that you guys can get on whatever program works the best for you and that you have more energy when you do. The reason I’m enjoying the yoga is that I can do it WHILE I have a stomach and am really stiff and inflexible. Have fun with the ball, and try to find something you can ease into to move more. Again, one day at a time. Compare notes with me. We’ll commiserate with each other… :0)

No, it was a good hit in the face, I needed it. Great advice and that is what we will do. Just go over it all and decide exactly what we want to do and go from there. Hmm, I did not know there was any yoga I could do with such a huge belly. I will definately check it out once the kids move, fingers crossed in the next week, ten days !! We have a lot to do before our yougest son moves back in on Feb 1 !!! Thanks for the kind words and support !!

The yoga 2 DVD set I bought is called, “Gentle Yoga,” Stephie. It is intended for old broads like me, 60+, (though I’ll be 70 in March); plus complete beginners to yoga, also like me; plus people who have had surgery that might cause issues; plus people who might be a bit intimidated by the whole idea, also like me. http://sixtyandme.com/gentle-yoga-for-seniors-videos/ It’s 50% off right now, and it’s some of the best money I’ve ever spent. I’ll be using them every day for whatever years I have left.

Oh, you’re welcome, Stephie. I hope that, when you get it, you jump in and try each pose as best you can. The teacher stresses that even if you can BARELY stretch in that direction, holding the stretch and breathing into it will do your body good. She gives you lots of options, too, and is very accepting of whatever you can do. She stresses there is no perfect way to do each pose. You do what you can each day and that’s enough. I was worried that I might not be able to do everything, and she showed me that my fears were groundless. Let me know what you think when you try it. I’d love to compare notes with you. Happy Thanksgiving. :0)
